THE ORTHODOX FRIENDS BURYING GROUND
YONGE STREET, NEWMARKET, ONTARIO
The Orthodox Friends burying ground on Yonge Street, Newmarket,
Ontario is the oldest Quaker historic site in central Ontario that is still
in use. The first initiative by Friends to obtain land for a burying ground
was in the Twelfth Month of 1805, when Amos Armitage and Nathaniel Pearson
were appointed by Friends to contract with Asa and Mary Rogers for land for
a meeting house. The Rogers' agreed to provide two acres at a price of $18
an acre, the cost of clearing. Title to the property, located on the
northeast corner of lot 92 concession 1 on the west side of Yonge Street,
King Township, was given to the Trustees of the Meeting in Sixth Month 1807.
In 1810, after a large number of deaths due to an epidemic in the years 1808-1809,
the Meeting purchased an additional 1 7/8 acres north and adjoining the land
obtained from the Rogers. This was the new site for the meeting house, with
the Rogers' land designated as the burying ground.
In 1828 a separation occured in the Yonge Street Friends Meeting,
with the separatists known as Hicksites, after Elias Hicks, a Quaker leader
in the United States, who was responsible in part for simi1 gr separations
there. The Hicksite Friends withdrew from the main group of Friends and
established their own meeting house and burying ground a?out a mile south
at Armitage, on part of the farm of William I. Phillips.
The larger group
of Friends became known as the Orthodox Friends.

Another separation occurred in 1881, but this time only within the
Orthodox group. A number of Friends withdrew because they objected to
changes which they felt would permit radical innovations more like those of
the revivals then sweeping Ontario. This group became known as the
Conservative Friends or Wilburites, after John Wilbur a Quaker leader of
Rhode Island who was involved in a similar controversy in 1845; the larger
continuing group became known as the Progressive Friends or Gurneyites,
after the English Quaker Joseph John Gurney, who visited Canada in the 1870s
and influenced many Friends with his theological interpretations of Quaker
beliefs. Many of the issues in the separations involved the importance of
traditions and separation from 'worldly' practices as defined by one of the
groups involved in the dispute. Younger Friends were impatient with
traditionalists, and wanted to adopt newer practices in Quaker worship-and
governance. Although the Conservatives maintained con~ro1 of the meeting
house, the burying ground came under the Progressives.
After each of the
separations, only those members of the grou~ that controlled the burying
ground could be buried there. The burying ground was a place where the
changing attitudes and practices of the living were given expression,
particularly in the use and form of grave markers. The Yonge Street burying
ground consists of a continuous, coherent body of evidence to demonstrate
the changing beliefs and practices of the Yonge Street Quakers from 1807
to the present.
In the twentieth century both Conservative and Progressive Friends
experienced a sharp decline in membership. This factor, and the participation
of Friends not personally involved in the separations, saw a mellowing of
the hard feelings between the two groups, so that some Conservative Friends
were buried in the burying ground, although most Conservatives preferred to
be buried in the Pine Orchard Friends burying ground, at Pine Orchard,
Whitchurch Twp., or the Conservative Friends burying ground in the Village of
Pickering, Ontario.
2. In 1968 a survey of the burying ground was prepared by John
McSkimming, P.L.S., of Toronto, at the request of the Trustees of the property,
so that the Trustees could comply with the provisions of the Cemeteries Act
of Ontario which required the establishment of accurate records of interments
and a perpetual care fund. 3
A list of the inscriptions on the markers in the burying ground
was published in the York Pioneer of 1965, and was prepared in 1963-64 by
the boys of the Preparatory Department of Pickering College, Newmarket,
Ontario. 4 During the years 1981 and 1982 the author collected information
on the location of interments, the shape, decoration and inscriptions on
markers. Mr. Brian Boyle, of the Photography Department, Royal Ontario
Museum, took photographs of markers, so there would be a permanent record
of the various types. During the field work it was clear that many details:
of the historic burying ground had not been published, and the list of
inscriptions in the York Ploneer of 1965 was incomplete, and in some
instances, inaccurate. This article discusses some of the features of the
burying ground and provides a revised list of inscriptions.
Quaker burial grounds were established adjacent to meeting houses,
a characteristic of Canadian and American Friends settlements. Even during
the second half of the nineteenth century when burials in public cemeteries
became popular, Quakers continued to' establish their own grounds. This
practice may reflect Friends' experiences in previous centuries when, as
a non-Conformist group. they were excluded from using Church cemeteries.
Graves in traditional Christian cemeteries were often placed on an
east-west axis, with the feet of the deceased to the east. This practice
was in preparation for the Second Coming of Christ, when the faithful ItJould
rise to face the Saviour. The Orthodox Friends burying ground has graves on
an east-west axis, with inscriptions on the west face of the markers, away
from Yonge Street, but with foot stones, when present, indicating that the
feet of the deceased were, according to traditional Christian practice, to
the east.
In the early decades of the nineteenth century. Friends did not
mark graves or keep any written plan of the location of burials. Death
soon brought anonymity in the burying ground. Describing Quaker practices
in Colonial America, Frost states, "families would not be buried together;
rather. there would be a systematic filling up of the burial ground". 5
The same practice is reported by the late Elmer Starr. a Friend whose family
had been associated with the Conservative Friends at Yonge Street. He
stated, "people were buried according to the order in which they died. That's
the way Yonge.Street graveyard is ... according to date. I have been surprised
to find that a Rogers will be buried in one place. and maybe some more
Rogers in another place". 6 The advent of the grave marker in the 1830s
enabled families to be buried in adjacent plots. Friends never permitted
family plots with marked borders, which would have indicated the social rank
or wealth of the family of the deceased.
Grave markers were made of field stone, wooden board or post, cast
iron, marbl~ or g~anite. The use of field stones as markers has been
attributed to the economic conditions of pioneering life. There is no
evidence for this assumption among Friends. Very few field stone markers remain
in the Orthodox burying ground, as only larger, inscribed stones are likely
to survive decades of caretakers. The best preserved field stone is shown
in fi gure 1.

5. survive, although the 1965 survey lists a wooden post, but I have not been
able to locate this. One grave marker of cast iron remains, and it only
the back plate for a metal plaque which had the inscription (fig.2). The
majority of markers were of marble and granite. Marble tablet markers were
easier to inscribe than field stone, and could be supplied in a number of
pre-cut shapes.
Early marble tablets were square or rectangular, the size being
governed in part by the number and length of the lines of inscription and
the vi ews of the members of the Meeti ng. The tabl et form was in four
shapes: square or rectangul ar wi th a fl at upper surface (type 1); a
slightly curving upper edge resembling a Romanesque arch (type 2), a
peaked upper edge forming a Norman ar~h (type 3), and a corbelled upper
edge, resembling a Gothic arch (type 4). Non-tablet markers of more
elaborate shapes and granite material were placed in a separate category
called type 5.
Stones with a horizontal top were in two size-ranges: a rectangular
tabl e of 4" to 6" wi dth and a 1ength of 20" or more, whi ch were set di rectly
in the ground and were footstones to mark the outer edge of burial plots;
a rectangular or square marker 12" to 20" in width and 12" to 25" long,
usually mounted on a base (fig.3). The square or rectangular marble tablet
was a predominate form in the Yonge Street Orthodox burying ground from the
1830s through the 1860s.
The type 2 marker was introduced in the i850s and was used until
the late 1870s (fig.4). The more 'ecclesiastical' tablets (types 3 & 4)
were used in the period 1860s through 1890s, originally to mark the graves
of children or young adults, and then adopted to mark the burials of adults.
Innovations in marker shape were first introduced for the young, and only
later used for adults. The ~cclesiastical stype markers are similar to
those used during the same period in non-Quaker cemeteries. They were often
carved with motifs of a dove (fig.5 ), lamb (fig.6 ), or pointed finger
(fig.7). They could have a Scriptural verse or poetic passage, an example
of which is shown in figure 5. A particular I~orman arch form of marker
(fig.8 ) which is in a number of Quaker burying grounds ~s probably a
.
mass-produced stone.
Beginning in the 1870s, markers of non-tablet form, made of marble
or granite in the form of block, pulpit, pedestal, plaque or other massive
forms, were introduced. These continue to the present time to be used in
the burying ground. An example of one of the block-shaped markers is shown
in figure 9.
By the 1890s the material for these markers changes to granite
from marble.
Although these forms are more conspicuous to the visitor to
the burying ground, they are not as noticeable in non-Quaker cemeteries
where large monuments and mausoleums are prominent features.
The inscriptions in this publication are reported in two lists:
an alphabetical listing by surname and a location index. The first row
starts at the northeast corner of the burying ground with stones numbered
consecutively, beginning with 1, from north to south. At the right side of
each entry in the surname list is a two-part location number which indicates
the row and number within the row where the marker with the particular
inscription can be found. The two numbers are separated by a full stop.
The original number of markers in the burying ground is not known,
as the published location index made in 1965 by the Pickering College students

does not always correspond with my own findings. Some stones have apparently
been removed or buried. Because many plots have no marker, some rows begin
in the middle of the burying ground, while others begin at the northern
property line. The fastest way to determine the location of the first
marker of a row is to locate a known stone in the alphabetical index, and use
the location designation to find your position in the burying ground.
Inscriptions on the oldest stones give the name of the deceased,
relationship to other members of the family (for children), date of death
and age at death in years, months and days. An example of an inscription
on a marker of a child's grave is: HARRIET. I Daughter of I Geo. & Hannah I
LOUNT, / Died 18th of 7th mo. 1827 / AE 2 yls 3 mo. 23 d. (see figure3 ).
Later stones show changes in different parts of the basic inscription,
including the use of a married woman's first name followed by the term
Iwife of' or 'beloved wife of' and then the name of the husband, whether
dead or alive. The phrase Ihusband of' is not used on markers, even though
the wife may have outlived the husband. The date of death on markers changes
from the plain form to the common form, and the age at death is often
shortened to only years and months, or in some cases, only the years are
inscribed.
Quakers had a testimony against the use of modern form of date,
insisting th~t a Christian community should not use the names of months
and days that were derived from pagan religious practices. The result
was to repl ace December 25, 1861 wi th 25th of Twel fth Month 1861 (see fi gure
4) •
Each inscription in the alphabetical list is reported as it is
on the marker; for example, lines of inscription are separated by a stroke
1/' to show the lines as they are on the marker; upper and lower case
letters are reported as they appear on the stones. Abbreviations and
stops are retained where they can be clearly seen. There are two features
that cannot be easily recorded: words inscribed in small capitals have
not been distinguished from those in regular-size capitals, and the
practice of inscribi~g a raised Istl and 'nd' after the number they
accompany, with an associated underline and two periods below the raised
letters, is not reprodu.s;ed in this list. For example, 2~ on a marker is
shown as 2nd. Variant spellings of established surnames su~h as Phillips
or Philips, Doan or Doane, are retained as they are on the marker but are
arranged in order under the usual spelling.
Words which appear on the top edge of a stone are listed before the
main inscription on the face tside) of the stone. The main inscription is
recorded from top to bottom of an upright stone, including any Scriptural
verse or poetry. The. name of the maker is entered last, as it is always
closest to the base of the stone. Where two or more inscriptions are on the
same face of a marker, the letter a is used for the top-most inscription,
b for the next, and so on, to the base of the marker. Only one marble
tablet has an inscription on the reverse side (stone 15.6), an unusual
practice for this form of marker. All the other stones have in-scriptions
on only one face. Finally, where part of an inscription is too weathered,
damaged or covered by lichens, to decipher, I have indicated this with square
brackets within a line or with three periods ... at the end of an
inscription. Occassionally square brackets have been used to enclose a
number of words to indicate there is some doubt as to the accuracy of the
reading.
