The objective of The Feeding John Program is to reach out to seniors who are low income, hungry for home cooked meals, and most importantly hungry for companionship. This new program is serving 20 lonely seniors, who are beyond appreciative of the volunteers who come to visit. The volunteers (which includes couples, families & individuals) tell us they are receiving more than they are giving. Other churches in our community are getting ready to join in the outreach, with the ultimate goal of having every weekend of the year adopted by a church. A Note from a Medical Transportation Client Please consider joining our team of drivers who take seniors to medical appointments. We can guarantee you will be appreciated and applauded by the sweet folks who rely on this service. Many long lasting friendships have been formed between drivers and their riders. To sign up come by the office at 209 South Acorn or call Penny at 997-9756, its really quite a simple way to give a little of your free time to those in need. You can drive every week or once a year - every trip is important to the person receiving the ride. Welcome - Patricia Garza ... our new Counselor In May we found out Maryann Lucy, LPC was being moved to Wisconsin. We knew the difficulty ahead in finding a bilingual counselor let alone one with domestic violence experience. Our worries were soon over, as Patricia Garza, LPC agreed to come on board the first of June. She has been a ray of sunshine, especially for the domestic violence clients, who seem to light up when they see her. Patricia’s compassion compliments her expertise in dealing with all ages. Most of the young mothers don’t have a babysitter; so an appointment with Patricia means they have to bring the kids! She doesn’t let their noise or neediness get the way of the session – in fact she often teaches parenting skills as she gently shows the mothers how to comfort the children while setting boundaries. Patricia graduated from TCU with a psychology degree then continued at Texas State for her masters in Counseling. She has a private practice in Kerrville and also sees clients at the Good Samaritan Center & Hill County Youth Ranch. We are very fortunate to be able to offer her services two days a week. We also contract with several other local counselors to provide vital counseling services to those who qualify. Congratulations to Patricia and her fiancé, Ryan, on their upcoming wedding in December! Food 4 Kids HILL COUNTRY COMMUNITY NEEDS COUNCIL 1904 N. Llano St (Jan 2015) P.O. John Updike said, “Dreams come true; without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them.” Upon birth we are given a blank canvas with endless possibilities for our life’s course. Our environment can and does have great impact on those possibilities, however we’ve all heard stories of great success against all odds. Now, her teenage children are excited to see her become a strong happy woman– a person they didn’t know existed. She finished by stating “Now I’m like a free bird, I can stretch my wings and fly”. We’ve had the great pleasure of watching a woman with a dream in the early stages of making that dream come true. Actually her dream is multifaceted. It is a dream of a better life for herself and therefore for her children. She realizes the importance of the example she is setting for her children and for her community. She told us the other day that since she came to the Needs Council and began domestic violence counseling that she looks at her “past life” as that of a caged bird. She related that before beginning a new life by enrolling in classes and coming to the Needs Council for counseling, she would never have thought it possible to Fall 2014 Another dream coming true after a ten year search, is that of a larger facility for the Needs Council.
