Pet Protectors
Society Newsletter
2013 Edition
a publication of North Shore Animal League America
Dear Friends,
As we approach the close of another year, the North Shore
Animal League America team salutes your steadfast support
and thanks you on behalf of the animals in need of protection.
Throughout the year, we proudly responded to the needs of
animals in danger and undesirable conditions and we are
on course to save close to 20,000 pets. Your concern and
commitment to this cause allows us to meet our mission.
Your support ensures that our emergency rescue teams
can continue to immediately respond to natural disasters
from coast to coast. This year, when tornadoes ravaged
the Heartland and wildfires spread across the American
West, Animal League America was there, providing handson assistance to affected communities and ensuring that the
lives of defenseless animals were saved.
Your continued support and your membership in our programs are invaluable
to us, allowing us to remain the leader in the no-kill movement year after year. You are
part of a group of passionate animal advocates that stretches clear across the country, giving us the resources we
need to be wherever animals in danger need our help.
We honor and thank you for what you have allowed us to
achieve on behalf of innocent animals for close to 70 years.
Over 1,000,000 lives saved because of you.
Here’s to 1,000,000 more!
Eric N. Lieberman
Senior Manager, Planned Giving
Our dedicated shelter operations team stays in
constant communication with animal welfare
organizations, so that we can step in and bring
animals to our adoption facility if they are in danger
of being euthanized simply because there is no
longer space or adequate resources to assure
proper care. Additionally, we continue to provide
comprehensive rehabilitation to puppy-mill dogs
we rescued from cruel breeding facilities who
would otherwise have been destroyed because
they can no longer produce puppies for sale.
Typically, these dogs have never known love or
even basic human contact until they are brought
to the safety of our no-kill shelter.
RESCUE
On any average day, 300-500
adoptable animals make their
temporary home at Animal League
America, over 90% of whom were
rescued by us from at-capacity
municipal shelters all across the
county.
We are especially proud of the heroic work our
emergency rescue and offsite teams did this year,
responding to wildfires in Colorado, tornadoes
in Oklahoma, hurricanes that battered the entire
East Coast and scores of other emergency calls
that came in when animals and their pet parents
were in desperate need of help. Utilizing our
fleet of Mobile Rescue Units, we were able to
provide food, temporary shelter and medical
care to thousands of animals displaced by natural
disasters. Most notably, for several months
after Hurricane Sandy wrought its devastation,
we operated a temporary emergency shelter
at a local community college so
that people who had lost their
homes would have a safe place
for their beloved pets to live while
they looked for new housing. At
the height of our response, we
provided perpetual care to over
500 animals, all of whom were
either reunited with their families
or re-homed if their owners were
not able to reclaim them.
wellness examinations and
hundreds of life-saving
specialty surgeries. Our onsite pharmacy, dental suite
and ultrasound services
allowed us to provide a
comprehensive range of
care to every pet that visited
our facilities.
We remain the headquarters of SpayUSA, a referral service that allows us to help prevent pet overpopulation
and thereby reduce euthanasia by providing subsidies to a national network of over 5,000 participating
veterinarians who can then offer very low-cost spay/neuter services in their communities. Again this year,
SpayUSA enabled over 18,000 surgeries to be performed across the country, saving untold lives.
We are proud to be breaking ground on the newest addition to our
campus, the Elizabeth Ann Freed Special Recovery Center. This
crucial addition will allow us to have separate, state-of-theart medical wards to care for groups of animals with different
types of communicable diseases so that we can greatly reduce
the spread of sickness, limit treatment times, save money and
most crucially save more lives.
NURTURE
Every bit as important as finding loving homes
for pets in need is ensuring that those pets
receive a lifetime of quality medical care. Again
this year, our Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical &
Wellness Center provided affordable, expert care
to both our adopters’ pets and to the general
community as well. Over the last year, our staff of
veterinarians and skilled technicians performed
over 15,000 spay/neuter procedures, 48,000
Separately, we are in the process of adding a new building
to our campus that will work in tandem with the Alex Lewyt
Veterinary Medical & Wellness Center. The free-standing Pet
Wellness Center will greatly expand our capacity to provide
low-cost routine care such as vaccines, treatment for minor
ailments and geriatric care to Animal League America
adopters and the general public, freeing up even more room
in the hospital for pets with more complex medical issues.
This year’s 19th annual Pet Adoptathon® was a great
success, resulting in 600 cats, dogs, puppies and
kittens finding their new families at our facility over
the course of the 36-hour event. Pet Adoptathon®,
however, is an international, month-long event, and
we are proud to report that over 2,500 shelters
worldwide participated in 2013, resulting in the
adoption of thousands of pets!
Our annual Tour For Life® had four separate teams
of drivers crossing the nation, collectively visiting
37 states on their journey. This year’s tour allowed
us to make the resources of Animal League America
available to 52 different shelters across the country
in order to help them find permanent homes for
animals in each of those communities, resulting in
over 2,000 adoptions.
ADOPT
The hub of our daily operations is our Port
Washington, NY animal adoption headquarters,
a 17,000-square-foot facility that operates 365
days a year so that prospective pet parents
can meet their new family members. Once
again, we are on pace to find homes for close
to 20,000 cats, dogs, puppies and kittens this
year, and we are beginning preparations to
celebrate our 70th anniversary of saving lives
in 2014.
MUTT-I-GREES
CURRICULUM
THE
FUTURE
®
Another important initiative of Animal League America is the
Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum, an innovative program that builds on
the affinity between children and animals, providing a unique
context to teach compassion, empathy and social responsibility.
The Curriculum was developed by Yale University School of the
21st Century (Yale 21C) in collaboration with North Shore Animal
League America, and funded by the Cesar Millan Foundation. It
is now in use in more than 2,000 schools across the country and
in Canada. The program, which was launched three years ago,
recently added a high school component, so it now covers pre-K
through 12th grade.
Mutt-i-grees® in the Library, an
extension of the Curriculum, provides
librarians with plans, strategies and
materials to actively engage children
and teens by using activities, crafts and books about dogs. The Curriculum
already reaches over one million students, teaching them skills they need
to succeed in schools, work and life. Bringing Mutt-i-grees programming to
public libraries provides another venue for highlighting local animal shelters
and homeless pets awaiting adoption, as well as teaching children to care.
The Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum is a Pre-K to Grade 12 program available in the following binders:
Pre-K–Grade 3, Grades 4–6, Grades 7 & 8, and Grades 9–12. To order, please visit http://education.
muttigrees.org/signup. For more information about the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum, please visit
www.education.muttigrees.org. You may also contact us at info@muttigrees.org or (203) 432-9944.
In November we launched our most ambitious capital
campaign goal yet: to add an entire second floor to our
adoption facility that will have large, free-roaming play and
adoption areas for our felines (and make more room on
the first floor for adoptable dogs). This 14,000-square-foot
addition is called Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption &
Wellness Center (BFF) and is the brainchild
of our national spokesperson and
tireless advocate, Beth Stern.
This will be no small feat, costing an estimated $7,000,000
and taking three years to complete, but once done it will
again re-affirm that North Shore Animal League America
is setting the standard for ensuring a healthy and happy
environment for adoptable pets in a shelter environment.
