Chimp Haven
Mission
We are pleased to provide this annual report to our many supporters and colleagues.
Chimp Haven has had a great year, and we want to share some of it with you.
To provide humane care for chimpanzees that
have been used for biomedical research, or
other purposes, and who are no longer used
for those purposes.
To provide large, enriched and permanent
housing for the chimpanzees in accordance with all state and federal
regulations pertaining to the care and housing of these nonhuman primates.
To provide noninvasive research opportunities on the behavior and biology of chimpanzees and to
disseminate this information to others in publicly available formats.
To educate the public about these endangered nonhuman primates and the need for conservation
in the wild and protection in captivity.

During this past year, we had our triennial site visit and assessment by the organization
that accredits animal care programs worldwide, AAALAC, International. The results
of that visit confirmed that we continue to meet the highest international standards for
the care of our chimpanzees. Chimp Haven is the only animal sanctuary accredited
by this organization. Also, we had an inspection by the Office of Laboratory Animal
Welfare at the National Institutes of Health. The report of this visit was outstanding,
and they had no suggestions for improvement. It is good to have these external
organizations affirm Chimp Haven’s achievements.
Working with chimpanzees has inherent risks, and the safety of the staff and the
chimpanzees is of paramount importance. This past year, we had the opportunity to
fine tune many of our safety procedures, such as entering and exiting animal housing
areas. The staff holds regular training sessions on these procedures in addition to our
extensive initial training program. Chimp Haven is blessed to have a diverse and knowledgeable Board of Directors
whose members are continually involved in providing oversight and planning for
the organization. Our Board members have expertise in primatology, especially
chimpanzees, non-profit organization management, business administration, science,
accreditation of animal care programs, development, animal welfare, veterinary
medicine, zoos and government relations. I want to personally thank each of them for
their service. I have enjoyed working with them for many years.

Revenue
The past year can be characterized as a period of refinement for Chimp Haven. Unlike
most nonprofit organizations that expand slowly over the years, Chimp Haven experienced
tremendous growth from 2003-2006 to accommodate the need to retire many of the
government’s chimpanzees formerly used in research. We went from one part-time employee
to a full staff of 30 people and chimpanzees arriving continuously in just a few short years. I
am very proud of our organization’s ability to create a world-class facility so quickly, but I must
admit that we were all able to breathe a bit easier once the sanctuary reached capacity. We
used our efforts in the past year to tweak our programs, procedures, training and staffing –
continually seeking improvement in the way we operate.
Contributions
Our goal is to provide the highest quality care to the chimpanzees in a cost-effective manner.
One example of this effort is providing specialized training to increase the ability of existing
staff to take on more responsibility and provide opportunities for professional growth. Our care
staff made great strides in learning and implementing our positive reinforcement program, and
administrative staff cross-trained with other positions to ensure continuity of service.

Chimp Haven also benefitted from a number of gifts of service or materials, reducing our
expenditures and creating important connections with our local (and national) community.
From an ambulance and x-ray machine to medical professionals volunteering their services to the
chimpanzees’ health care, we are indebted to our many new friends who have helped us to
care for the chimpanzees.
Nothing has brought home the fruits of our labors as clearly as Henry. Having been rescued
from a small cage in a garage outside Houston, Texas, Henry arrived at Chimp Haven in
February, 2009. His transformation has been amazing to witness, both in terms of his incredible
return to health, but also through his social development and regained confidence. He is now
joyful and vivacious, and I look forward to seeing him grow personally through the years
at Chimp Haven.
My thanks to the Board of Directors for their continued guidance and oversight, our tremendous
staff for their hard work and dedication to the chimpanzees, and the many supporters of Chimp
Haven who care so deeply about our mission. We simply would not be here, doing our good
work, without your support!
