HIGHLIGHTS
WHAT WE’RE
LISTENING TO:
MANA
I’m a Maná fan de pies a
cabeza, so I had a date
circled on my calendar:
April 21.
That day
Maná’s
latest
album
Cama Incendiada went on
sale. When I bought it, I
thought, “Will it take me
back to my first teenage
‘love’ who introduced me
to the band and taught me
not to be that girl hundido en un rincón or would it take me to my
last love when I was clavado(a) en un bar during my divorce?” Alas,
it didn’t take me anywhere. It reminded me of who I am today;
A lover, a fighter, a mother, a rebel. Every song can identify with
each one of the personalities we may or may not confess to. With
love ballads and rock anthems overflowing with pride, this album
doesn’t disappoint. – Adriann Tunales
SPARE PARTS NOW ON DVD/BLU-RAY

Spare Parts tells the story of four Hispanic students who form a
robotics club at their Phoenix,
Arizona high school.
With
no experience, 800 bucks,
used car parts and a dream,
this rag tag team goes up
against the country’s reigning
robotics champion, MIT in
competition. For a full review

GETTING YOUR
MONEY RIGHT
WITH XANDER
MARTINEZ
G
ot your mind on your money and your money on your
mind? Xander Martinez is here to help. He’s a local
Relationship Banker that has been working in the
banking world/business world for fifteen years. Send your
questions to money@mercadobilingue.com or tweet us @
MercadoBilingue.
Whats the difference between a credit union and a regular bank, like
Bank of America? Which one is right for me? – Shelly Cardona, Denton
XM: Choosing between a credit union and a bank really has to do
with your personal preferences. Sometimes it may depend on the
company you work for. Some jobs offer a free membership to a
credit union, which you should consider. Same goes with other
companies that prefer to do business with a nationally recognized
bank like Chase or Bank of America.
It’s like asking someone “What do you like better Pepsi or Coke?”
Personally, I like Dr. Pepper. Everyone is going to have their
preference. Choosing a bank or a credit union is more about your
life style. Do you travel a lot? If so, national banks are going to
be your best bet for convenience. If you live in rural areas or a
small town, like Denton, a local bank or credit union can certainly
take care of your financial needs.

I AM BILINGÜE
A UNIQUELY
LATINO PROFILE
OSCAR JAVIER GUTIERREZ II
TEXAS BORN, HOLLYWOOD BORN
A lot of
actors have
to pay their
dues but I
was just sort
of baptized
by fire.
His life was forever changed the day his mother
brought home a flyer announcing a casting call for
a major Hollywood film in his hometown. Born in
McAllen, Texas, Oscar Gutierrez never dreamed of
becoming an actor but after auditioning, he landed
a leading role in the film Spare Parts, alongside
Hollywood stars like George Lopez, Marisa Tomei and Jamie Lee Curtis. Now Oscar has
several films and television projects in the works, but this Texas native still makes time for
his culture and his family.
WE ASKED HIM...
MERCADO BILINGÜE: Before your role in
Spare Parts, you had never acted before, right?
OSCAR: Yeah, no I had never done acting
before. My thing was always sports. Two of
my uncles played college basketball and one
of them play college football. And since I
was a little kid, I can remember them putting
in me in peewee, little league. So my thing
was always to plays sports and go to college.
MERCADO’S QUICK FIVE Qs
Q: What’s your favorite film, play, TV show or book?
A: Inception.
Q: What your favorite word in any language?
A: Cabrón.
Q: What’s your favorite food that’s culturally
important to you?
A: Tamales.
Q: What type of music could you not live without?
A: Hip-hop.
Q: What place have you traveled to that had an
impact on you?
A: Costa Rica.
4
MERCADO BILINGÜE: What were some of
your favorite scenes to film in Spare Parts?
OSCAR: The pool scene was one of my
favorites, and that one was improvised. The
directors just told us to go crazy with it. So
me and the other actor that plays Lorenzo
- his name is José Julián - he sort of looks
at me and says “what do we do?” We look
at George Lopez and we ask him, “Can we
throw you in the pool?” And that’s where
we got the whole idea from. George was like
“Alright go for it” and so we threw him in the
pool. That was a great feeling right there.
MERCADO BILINGÜE: Speaking of George
Lopez, we hear that recently you shot a television
pilot with him. What was that experience like?
OSCAR: I can’t say the details about the pilot
yet because it’s about to air soon. But George
invited me onto the pilot and it was really
awesome working with him and other actors
from CBS. Just being on set with George
for the second time was a great experience.
It’s become like a dream. I never in a million
years expected to be working with George
Lopez and get to be hang out with him.
MERCADO BILINGÜE: Beside acting, do you
have any other career aspirations?
OSCAR: Well my mom’s a doctor and I really
look up to her. So, I really love medicine
and everything to do with science. So yeah, I
would pursue something in the medical field
or something to do with science.
MERCADO BILINGÜE: Got any “words of
wisdom” for young actors like yourself trying
to make it to Hollywood?
OSCAR: When I started, I used to get a lot
of people trying to sidetrack me and get into
my head, so my advice to someone would be:
don’t let anyone get in your head. Just keep
moving forward and keep doing what you’re
doing. Eventually you’d get there, if you want
it bad enough.

TOYOTA AND FC DALLAS TEAM UP TO CELEBRATE
YOUNG SOCCER STARS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
T
he automaker Toyota has
recently made North Texas
home to its North American
headquarters. Now that the
company has planted its roots
here in the Lone State state, they
are looking to give back to the
community and they’ve partnered
with FC Dallas to launch “Toyota Soccer Stars.” The program aims to
recognize and nurture hard work, dedication and the goodwill of Texas
youth, both on and off the playing field.
Through Toyota Soccer Stars, four young, area soccer players will be
selected to attend the FC Dallas Elite Player Residential camp. The camp
package includes accommodations for a four-night stay, daily soccer skill
workshops, an official Adidas equipment package, one-on-one sessions
with FC Dallas’ technical coaches, player evaluations and more.
How can you nominate a young soccer player? Toyota and FC Dallas
6
are encouraging coaches, parents, friends and family to nominate
exemplary youth athletes (ages 11-16) who are making a positive impact
in their community, as well as excelling in the classroom and displaying
leadership on their sports teams.
Nominations
will
be
accepted
through May 20 and can be submitted at
ToyotaSoccerStars.com. Nominations will
also be accepted in-person at FC Dallas’
upcoming community clinics on May 19. FC
Dallas provides free community soccer clinics
to locations throughout the Metroplex. These
Community Clinics provide children with the
opportunity to run through soccer drills with
professional athletes and trained coaches.
