Birdman, an abstract 14-foot sculpture painted in bright red, is clearly visible from U.S. Highway 421. The brothers see it as an expression of creative emotion, liberty and freedom – an enduring theme in their work for the past 40 years. Liberty is precious to the brothers Da Huang and Shan Zuo Zhou. During their youth, the brothers survived the Mao Ze-Dong’s Cultural Revolution, during which their educator father was exiled. They, their educator mother and grandmother were re-located to a rural, mountain range where they were forced to adapt to farm life. Able to resume their education, the Zhou brothers immersed themselves in university studies in the arts and, before they came to America, they became nationally recognized contemporary artists in China. Their 40-year collaboration has earned them international recognition and can be found in public and private collections around the globe. Birdman joins a collection of Zhou Brothers paintings, small sculptures and terragraphs on display in the Westville Campus James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex and in several locations on the PNW Hammond Campus. Birdman was initially part of the Zhou B foundation garden in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood. “We are thrilled to respond to the Zhou Brothers’ wish to extend their statements through art to the other side of the lake,” said Judy Jacobi, assistant vice chancellor of University Art Collections & Special Programs. “It is an honor that they chose a spot on our highway gallery to be installed as a centerpiece and grow our partnership.” To obtain further information or to schedule an appointment to tour the Purdue Northwest art collections, contact Jacobi at 219-7855593 or Liz Bernel, PNW coordinator of Special Events at 219-785-5719. Tours are held year-round, rain or shine. Groups of children and teens accompanied by educators and parents are treated to a pizza lunch, compliments of PNW Chancellor Thomas Keon. A new, comprehensive Fitness Center has opened on the Westville Campus in the recently-constructed James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex. It complements the wellestablished Fitness Center located at the Hammond Campus in the Fitness and Recreation Center. Memberships are available for community residents, PNW students, faculty, staff, retirees and their spouses, as well as alumni to use either facility. Both centers offer a wide range of aerobic, strength training, functional fitness and sportspecific exercise and training equipment plus a joggingwalking track. Exercise classes are held at the Hammond center and are coming soon to Westville. “We at Purdue Northwest are pleased to further our footprint of commitment to physical fitness and wellness across our campuses’ Northwest Indiana service area,” PNW Director of Fitness John Bobalik said. Both centers are open 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays. Each facility also is open Saturdays—9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hammond and noon to 5 p.m. at Westville. 12 The Hammond center is open Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Both centers are closed most holidays. Certified exercise physiologists and other credentialed professionals staff each center. Among their responsibilities is that of teaching proper use of the exercise equipment and assisting members who want to develop exercise programs based on personal fitness objectives. “Our staff takes great pride providing all Fitness Center members the personal and professional attention they desire—whether they are first-time exercisers or elite athletes,” Bobalik said. Both PNW Fitness Centers also serve as laboratories for student interns enrolled in PNW’s fitness management program. One-month ($60), threemonth ($150) and yearly ($500) memberships are available to area residents. For seniors 65 & older, three-month and yearly memberships cost $115 and $400, respectively. Membership fees for PNW alumni are $60 (three months) and $200 (yearly), respectively. To purchase a membership, go online to PNW Fitness Center membership. For more information phone 219/989-2175 (Hammond) or 219/785-5282 (Westville), or visit PNW Fitness Centers. The North Central MBA students presented their Outstanding Faculty Award to Dr. Ceren Turedi, of Chicago, assistant professor of Marketing, who teaches the Marketing Principles and Strategy course. Students noted that Turedi is an enthusiastic supporter of experiential learning and connects students with the business world in meaningful ways thus increasing the impact of Purdue Northwest on local business practice. She has been instrumental in establishing a student chapter of a national marketing association. The Outstanding Student Leader Award went to Farah Navder, of Michigan City, who earned her MBA in May. To select the Outstanding Student Leader, members of the MBA class of 2016 were asked to select a student who demonstrated leadership skills, worked effectively as a team member, contributed to classroom discussions and participated in service activities outside of the classroom. Navder completed her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Master’s degree in International Business from University of Wollongong in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She was inducted into Delta Mu Delta business honor society. The Calumet Campus September 1, 2016 Executive MBA students presented their Outstanding Faculty Award to Edward Furticella, of Munster, head of the PNW Department of Quantitative Business Studies. In selecting Furticella for the honor, students lauded him for being “down to earth” and for sharing a wealth of experience gained from his time spent in banking and for his friendly style of teaching Accounting. Graduating student Russell Mulligan, of Highland, received the Outstanding Student Award as selected by the Executive MBA faculty members. Russell, who is a 2016 graduate of the MBA program, was the class representative for the MBA cohort group. He was cited as being “distinguished in his professional conduct” and for his overall excellence in both his academic performance and leadership style.
