Chicagoland Foxhunters Report Publication of the Saturday Night 2M Fox Hunts of the Chicagoland Foxhunters Volume 2 Issue 11 November 2013 Two meter foxhunting in Chicago started in the early 1960s. One of the first hunts started on 147.30 MHz. The starting point was in Des Plaines near the Centel Building. With the introduction of 2 meter repeaters, it moved to the SRO’s CFAR repeater. There were hunts on the WAFAR, ACL and CFMC repeaters with a simplex hunt sponsored by the RAMS on 146.34 MHz. Now the lineup is on CFAR, CMFC and two simplex hunts. CFAR Foxhunt - Nov 2nd, 2013 - by John WD9EXW We were here, about 10.5 miles away. Running 35 watts to vertical tape beam @ 12'. All hunters heard us. The street is not on google map yet since it is a new subdivision. It wasn't intended to be muddy but some of the hunters chose a muddy route in the dark. https://maps.google.com/maps? saddr=IL-83+S&daddr=41.881368,+-88.147067&hl=en&ll=41.879531,-88.110523&spn=0.112984,0.162907&sll=41. 894227,-87.956758&sspn=0.01412,0.020363&geocode=FQM5fwIdkszB-g%3BFRgPfwIdhfu-g&t=h&mra=dme&mrsp=0&sz=16&z=13 The munched was at The Burger Joint which was a new spot on Roosevelt Rd. It was a food court type place with Connie’s Pizza & Oberweiss Dairy. Some hunters enjoyed an ice cream or shake. Results: Fox John WD9EXW, Tom N9CBA - later joined by Janet and Matt 1. November 2013 Second Saturday November 2013 Fox Hunt Report - Nov 9, 2013 by Tony AA9CC I hid in the vacant lot next to Falco’s restaurant on 83 at 85th street. Power was 5 watts to my tape measure beam at 6 feet in a thorny shrub. All 4 hunters had a good signal at the start, 7 miles northwest, except for Don who started from home unofficially. Google maps gave the distance as 10 miles and 16 minutes from 355 to 55 to 83. The winning route was Ogden to 83, over 55 and few overshoots. The other hunters took Cass Ave south. WD9EXW had a reflection to the west of 83 and spent some time there. First and second place were within a minute, just after 8:30. We called Don in after 9:00. He took Touhy to 294 south to 88 west to 355 south past 55, back north, about 43 miles driving..... https://maps.google.com/maps?daddr= 41.73328,-87.943369&hl=en&sll= 41.733693,-87.942274&sspn=0.003363, 0.005075&t=h&mra=mift&mrsp=1&sz=18&z=18 Results: 1. CFMC 2M Foxhunt - Nov 16, 2013 by Tony AA9CC It was a windy and rainy night, and after arriving decided not to hide outside around 7:30, left for a spot behind Red Robin. On the way there stopped to look at a bridge and noticed tire tracks in the grass, A hidden road! Setting up the antenna mast against 30 mph winds took considerable force. Wind blew tape measure beam horizontal , so replaced it with the dual 2 element for the third test transmission. Sitting cozy in the back of the van, coyotes howling close by. First was John, second Matt, third Bill and fouth Mike. Called Don in, he was at College of DuPage. 35 watts, at 10 feet. Water tower was between us & the start point. Started @ 8:05pm Google report 10.5 miles. so we knew it would be fast - not a bad idea, since it was the first cold hunt! 19f in the car afterwards. Page 4 From our vantage point, we couldn't really see drive by's, and we were hoping some hunters would get on the wrong side of 90. Had a bit of trouble with the gear, were late a couple times. Matt drove what sounded like a perfect route. Results: 1. Matt KC9SEM, Patty N9PLS 2. Bill 3. Tony AA9CC, Joan KC9QQY 4. Mike WA9FTS, Tom N9IHZ 5. Don W9RA Chicagoland Foxhunters Report!
