FLDP 1 BAE Systems FLDP We appreciate the opportunity to provide an overview of BAE Systems' Financial Leadership Development Program (FLDP). We are very proud of the program and what it offers recent college graduates in terms of work experience, leadership development opportunities, and enhanced career development. Our FLDP has been developing business leaders for the company for over 40 years. BAE Systems' finance community is well-represented with FLDP graduates who have been promoted to key positions including vice president of Finance and director of nearly all financial disciplines. I myself am a graduate of the program. As you read on, you will learn about BAE Systems, our locations, business areas, and guiding values. We also will tell you about the features and benefits of the FLDP, some of which include job rotations, high visibility, leadership training, one-onone mentoring, and a company-supported graduate degree. FLDP 3 Our locations The BAE Systems Finance organization is responsible for supporting the business in meeting the company’s strategic goals. The Financial Leadership Development Program is a key component of the Finance organization at BAE Systems. The program's foundation is in three home campus locations: Nashua, New Hampshire; Endicott, New York; and the Washington, D.C., area. FLDP participants also have the opportunity to work in Fort Worth, Texas; York, Pennsylvania; Charlotte, North Carolina; and many other locations. All sites offer an array of social and cultural activities. Each site is unique in its own way. All of them offer employees fulfilling careers with competitive salaries and excellent benefits. The complete package includes regular merit reviews, comprehensive insurance benefits, graduate school tuition assistance, paid vacation, and a 401(k) plan with company match. Many facilities offer health and wellness programs as well as flexible work schedules, such as the 9/80. The 9/80 schedule compresses the 80 hours normally worked in a two-week period into nine working days, giving employees every other Friday off. The FLDP allows participants to experience geographic, business, and functional diversity. Gaining experience in different locales broadens participants' scope and business knowledge, helping tomorrow's leaders to develop and grow. 4 FLDP Our mission The mission of the Financial Leadership Development Program is to cultivate professionals within the Finance organization who are action-oriented, who will lead effective change, and promote innovation within BAE Systems. The FLDP also places a strong emphasis on philanthropy and participation in charitable events through multiple community programs. The FLDP is an exciting and challenging three-year development program for talented, high-performing individuals. It consists of three diverse oneyear rotations, each with increasing responsibility.The FLDP is designed to attract and retain highly motivated people who want to become the future leaders of BAE Systems. FLDP 5 Our candidates Financial Leadership Development Program participants are a select group of well-rounded recent college graduates. Recruitment for our program typically focuses on candidates who possess the following attributes: –Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a business-related discipline from an accredited college or university –Excellent academic record (minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA) – Strong leadership qualities – Ability and willingness to relocate for a minimum of one year – Superior communication skills –Achievement in non-academic pursuits such as athletics, clubs, and organizations; special projects; military service; and prior work experience which may include a professional internship – Capacity and motivation for hard work –Ability to obtain a security clearance through the U.S. Department of Defense The Financial Leadership Development Program consists of a combination of challenging work environments, internal training courses, increasing responsibilities, and the academic rigor of a master's degree, to form a blended learning experience. To achieve success in this program, FLDP participants are required to have the following capabilities: – High self-confidence – Logical reasoning ability –Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills –Ability to demonstrate leadership of groups and individuals Participants are encouraged to complete a master’s degree in a relevant business discipline on a part-time basis. In addition, first-year participants will attend internal courses at BAE Systems pertaining to the defense industry and government contracting. 6 FLDP FLDP 7 Our program Rotational work assignments Each FLDP participant completes three one-year work assignments. To expose every member of the program to several aspects of BAE Systems’ highly diverse business, second and third year rotations can be in a business area located outside of the participants’ immediate geographic location. Participants gain a broad base of functional experience, typically serving in project finance, contracts, and financial planning and Leadership training analysis rotations. Throughout the program, participants interact with senior and executive management and other leadership development participants in Engineering, Operations, IT, and Human Resources to establish a network critical to the success of the business. More specifically, the program is designed to: – Attract high-potential individuals – Offer a broad spectrum of career opportunities – Establish a foundation of skills for future leaders – Promote learning through challenging work assignments – Instill a sense of confidence in providing leadership – Provide participants with exposure to senior management – Build a foundation of essential communication skills – Offer challenging work assignments and varied career growthopportunities The program seeks to grow each individual’s leadership skills. There are three essential components to financial leadership: –Development of a knowledge base that spans several functions within the Finance organization –Subject-matter expertise through completion of a master’s program, recurring meetings, and in-house training opportunities –Development of superior teamwork and team leadership skills at the annual Leadership Development Conference The numerous training opportunities provided by the program seek to allow participants to: –Discover effective ways to understand and communicate with others –Learn about various communication and leadership styles –Learn how to leverage differences in individual styles –Gain insight into motivation and performance – Practice group and teamwork skills – Practice and hone presentation skills 8 FLDP Overview The Financial Leadership Development Program Participants typically complete rotations in three of the following areas: – Project finance – Financial planning and analysis –Accounting –Auditing –Contracts – Corporate assignments FLDP design Rotational assignments* YEAR 1 YEAR 2 YEAR 3 Home campus rotation Off-campus rotation Home or off-campus rotation Monthly meetings Internal curriculum Accounting/Project Finance/Contracts Graduation project Graduate school Leadership development conferences Graduate School I Teamwork/ personal effectiveness II Personal development *Participants must be ready and willing to relocate I I I Leadership development FLDP Graduate school / in-house training The participants' educational coursework provides a blended learning experience that combines the comprehensive education of a master’s degree with the practical knowledge of in-house training. BAE Systems offers tuition assistance for graduate school programs. Participants may attend any accredited business graduate school offering a part-time evening, weekend or online program approved by FLDP management. Members of the program also complete in-house training that focuses on Project Finance, Government Contracting, and Program Management at BAE Systems. This training program familiarizes participants with the unique aspects of the defense contracting industry. In addition to the in-house training, many BAE Systems sites offer "softskill" training, such as: visualization, communication, business etiquette, and public speaking. 9 FLDP meetings The program gives each participant many unique opportunities. It provides interaction with senior leadership, and training on a wide array of topics pertaining to BAE Systems and the aerospace, defense, and security industries. Throughout the program, participants meet regularly with senior management to discuss career goals and opportunities. FLDP coordinators Program coordinators are responsible for mentoring program participants, evaluating individual performance, assisting in yearly job rotation selections, and making policy recommendations to the FLDP leadership team. Additional mentoring is provided by the managers who oversee the participants' daily activities and write their annual performance reviews. 10 FLDP Program completion An FLDP graduation ceremony is held each year, typically in June. The ceremony serves to recognize the accomplishments of those who have successfully completed the program. Graduates are placed within one of our sectors based on their interests and abilities demonstrated during the program. Today, many FLDP graduates are serving as managers, directors, controllers, and vice presidents throughout the company. Graduates are well-positioned to succeed as a result of their broad experiences, mentoring and educational opportunities, and the strong networks they establish as program participants. FLDP 11 Our history Since its inception in 1971, the FLDP has evolved to become a source of leadership throughout the company, with program graduates now serving as vice presidents, directors, and managers throughout various sectors. The FLDP leadership team – consisting of the Senior Vice President of Finance and his staff – is dedicated to ensuring that the program fulfills its objective of developing the financial and business leaders of the future for BAE Systems. In closing The Finance Leadership Development Program is a key source of leadership for our Finance organization. The significant commitment we make to program participants in mentoring, rotational assignments, and graduate school tuition assistance pays great dividend to both the FLDPs and BAE Systems as a whole. As the FLDP director, I am committed to making sure the program continues its longstanding tradition of cultivating the future business leaders of the enterprise.
