global ncap adopts
‘MELAKA DECLARATION’
to advance vehicle safety
The largest ever gathering of New Car Assessment Programmes
was recently held in Malaysia on May 23-24.
The Global NCAP Annual Meeting
brought together all NCAPs active
worldwide to share experience in
promoting consumer information
about automobile crash avoidance
and protection. The meeting featured
significant commitments to vehicle safety
in the UN Decade of Action (2011-2020)
including the first crash demonstration
of the ASEAN NCAP, the launch of a
new testing facility in Malaysia and
government action on vehicle crash test
standards.
Global NCAP also adopted the
‘Melaka Declaration’ endorsing the
vehicle safety aspects of the Global Plan
for the Decade launched by the UN
last year. These include the universal
application of the UN’s most important
vehicle safety regulations and the creation
of NCAPs in all world regions. This was
supported recently in a debate on road
safety held in April by the UN General
Assembly. Global NCAP’s Chairman
Max Mosley told the meeting that “here
in Melaka, we are turning the UN
Assembly’s words into action, which is
what the Decade should be all about”.
Hosted by the Malaysian Institute
for Road Safety Research (MIROS) and
the Automobile Association of Malaysia
(AAM), the Annual Meeting was attended
by over 450 delegates and held in
conjunction with the 2012 South Asia
Auto Safety Week.
Guest of Honour was HRH Prince
Michael of Kent who presented Global
NCAP’s inaugural annual safety awards.
The winners were the US National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA), their former Administrator
Joan Claybrook, who created the first ever
NCAP in 1978, and Robert Bosch GmbH,
for their development of the anti-skid
technology electronic stability control.
Presenting the awards, HRH Prince
Michael congratulated the winners and
Global NCAP.
“Bringing together all the world’s
NCAPs each year is itself an important
innovation and exactly the kind of
innovation that will ensure the Decade of
Action achieves meaningful results” said
HRH Prince Michael.
A highlight of the meeting was the
official opening of the MIROS PC3 crash
laboratory. The Institute’s Director
General Dr Wong Shaw Woon, explained
that; “With assistance from Global NCAP
and the FIA Foundation, MIROS has
been able to build a strong platform to
develop an independent consumer-based
assessment programme for vehicle safety
in the ASEAN Region”.
On behalf of the AAM, the club’s
Vice Chairman, Wan Zahruddin Wan
Ahmad, expressed the hope that; “As the
ASEAN NCAP comes into effect today,
this regional and global effort will make a
significant contribution towards reducing
road accident fatalities”.
Further strengthening the country’s
road safety leadership role, the Malaysian
Government has also decided to apply
7
the UN’s regulation for frontal impact
to all new passenger cars. This is in line
with the recommendations on vehicle
safety included in the Decade’s Global
Plan which were featured in a seminar
on the Decade chaired by Lauchlan
McIntosh of ANCAP and introduced
by David Ward Director General of
the FIA Foundation. The Seminar was
given a regional perspective by Rebecca
Huang, Economic Affairs Officer of
the UNESCAP who warned that 50%
of global road fatalities occurred in
Asia. And the important role of the
safety standards promoted by the UN’s
Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle
Regulations (UNECE WP29) was
emphasized by Chris Bonanti, Associate
Administrator of the NHTSA.
The Annual Meeting concluded with
live demonstrations of the anti-skid
device electronic stability control and
anti-lock braking systems in motor bikes.
After the test, Max Mosley commented
on the “remarkable stability of the car
with the system on” and called for “this
remarkable life-saving technology to be
made standard as soon as possible on all
new cars across the world.”
ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE WORLD
ROAD
RAGE
In the United Kingdom, Some 41 per cent
of people admit to getting angry when
behind the wheel.
Conducting a study of 2,000 drivers,
Continental Tyres in a research revealed
that as many as 15 per cent of motorists
have, on at least one occasion, got out
their car to confront someone over a
driving-based issue.
Being honked at was found to be the
most widespread form of aggression,
followed by tailgating and breaking hard
right in front of another driver. This was
followed by being undertaken, people
flashing at other cars to make them get
out of the way, and rude gesturing.
“Of paramount importance is road
safety. But if motorists feel intimidated
or angry they will lack concentration
increasing the danger for other road
users, never mind not enjoying the
driving experience,” said Tim Bailey,
safety expert for Continental Tyres.
Researchers also looked at the motives
behind driver behaviour, with four in 10
admitting that they are more aggressive
behind the wheel than at any other time.
One-in-two drivers said they no longer
enjoy driving and the threat of suffering
road rage was offered up as the main
reason why.
After encountering ill-tempered
motorists, 40 per cent said they felt angry,
28 per cent were left shaken and 22 per
cent wanting to retaliate
Bailey called on motorists to employ
sensible tactics when driving and try to
avoid any harsh braking or accelerating
that might rile other road users.
In an unrelated study, counseling
psychologist Jerry Deffenbacher, PhD, at
the Colorado State University highlighted
his research on the personality,
aggressiveness and risk-taking
characteristics of high-anger drivers in
which it was revealed that anger is not a
chronic experience for high-anger drivers,
but something prompted by different
triggers or events on the road.
His studies revealed that high-anger
drivers:
Engage in hostile, aggressive
thinking. High-anger drivers report more
judgmental and disbelieving thoughts
about other drivers than low-anger
drivers do. For example, they’re more
likely to insult other drivers or state
disbelief about the way others drive. They
also have more vengeful and retaliatory
thoughts about other drivers, sometimes
plotting ways to physically harm them.
Take more risks on the road. Highanger drivers in his studies report more
risky behavior in the prior three months
than low-anger drivers do. They more
often speed--usually 10 to 20 miles per
hour over the speed limit--rapidly switch
lanes, tailgate and enter an intersection
when a light turns red.
Get angry faster and behave more
aggressively. High-anger drivers most
commonly reported the following
aggressive behaviors: swearing or namecalling, driving while angry, yelling at the
driver or honking in anger. They were
angry slightly more than two times a day
and averaged just over two aggressive
behaviors per day, whereas low-anger
drivers were angry slightly less than
once per day and averaged less than one
8
aggressive behavior per day. This pattern
held for low- and high-anger drivers who
drove equally as often and an equivalent
number of miles.
Have more accidents. In driving
simulations, high-anger drivers have
twice as many car accidents--either
from a collision with another vehicle
or off-road crash. They also report
more near-accidents and receive more
speeding tickets. However, the two
groups are equal in the number of
accidents they have that involve major
injuries; Deffenbacher speculated that’s
because these types of crashes are a rare
occurrence anyway.
Experience more trait anger, anxiety
and impulsiveness. High-anger drivers
are more likely to get in a car angry,
which may stem from work or home
stress. They generally tend to express
anger in more outward and less controlled
ways as well as react impulsively.
The American Automobile Association
Group Public Policy Road Safety Unit
meanwhile, in a report, stated that the
car is an extension of an individual’s
territory.
“If a vehicle threatens this territory
by cutting in, for example, the driver will
probably carry out a defensive maneuver.
This may be backed up by an attempt
to re-establish territory - in spite of the
rationalizations we used to account for
our behavior, flashing headlights or
a blast of the horn are, perhaps, most
commonly used for this purpose,” said
Matthew Joint, Head of Behavioral
Analysis.
“However, this may not always
succeed in communicating the full depth
of our feelings. As it is usually difficult
to talk or even shout to the offending
driver, other non-verbal communication
(offensive gesticulations) may be
employed. Confrontations of this nature
are not uncommon and are usually
defused as the vehicles move away from
each other.
In some circumstances, the defending
driver may wish to go one step further
and assert his dominance, and many
drivers have admitted to having chased
after a driver just to “teach him a lesson,”
often pressing him by moving to within
inches of his rear bumper.
“This is comparable to the manner in
which a defending animal will chase an
attacker out of its territory. However, the
result of such behavior in drivers is, of
course, potentially fatal,” said Joint.
NEW CAR
BUFORI LAUNCHES
GENEVA IN CHINA
first showcase in asia
BUFORI Motor Car Company (M) Sdn
Bhd has launched the Bufori Geneva
today for the Chinese market. The car
was presented to the media during
a press conference at the Beijing
International Motor Show, one of the
biggest in the industry with around
800,000 visitors expected. The event also
marks the first official appearance of the
Bufori Geneva in Asia.
The BUFORI Geneva, which
was introduced at the 2010 Geneva
International Motor Show, combines
cutting-edge technology with a
beautifully proportioned body that
exudes presence and style. Positioned
in the ultra-luxury saloon segment, the
BUFORI Geneva is powered by a highperformance 6.4Lt engine. Electrically
closing rear-hinged coach doors, an
adjustable air suspension and a luxurious
interior provide ultimate comfort and
well-being.
The exhibited Bufori Geneva was
specially hand crafted for Tan Sri Yeoh
Tiong Lay, founder of YTL Corporation
and one of Malaysia’s most respected
businessmen and a passionate car
collector. Not able to decide what to
present for the birthday of a man who has
already achieved so much in life, Tan Sri
Yeoh Tiong Lay’s family commissioned
Bufori to build a car that only existed in
one’s dreams. The resulting car is the
precursor of the Bufori Geneva Luxury
Saloon.
Mr. Anthony Khouri, Chairman
and Co-Founder of BUFORI, said: “We
are very excited to launch the Bufori
Geneva in China today and particularly
proud to showcase Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong
Lay’s personal car. The car is a perfect
demonstration of the customisation
possibilities at Bufori, featuring a Chinese
tea set with instant boiling water at the
press of a button.”
“We are pleased to offer with the
Bufori Geneva a fantastic addition to our
model line-up in China. The Beijing motor
show is the ideal stage for the launch
and we are looking forward to present
the car to our distinguished guests” adds
Ms. Jenny Wang, General Manager of
Jiaochen Bufori (Shanghai) Motor Sales
Co., Ltd.
Mr. Gerry Khouri, Managing Director
9
and Co-Founder of BUFORI, commented:
“The Bufori Geneva represents a genuine
alternative to the luxury saloon segment.
We have created a car for discerning
individuals who are passionate about cars
but do not wish to identify themselves
with a bland mass-produced luxury
vehicle. We anticipate a lot of special
requests from sophisticated Chinese
customers and our team will do their best
to fulfil their expectations.”
Made to order for discerning Chinese
individuals
As part of the Bufori philosophy,
Chinese customers will be able to
completely personalise the Bufori
Geneva to their exact requirements. An
unlimited choice of interior trim colours
and combinations, wood veneers, exterior
paint colours and combinations as well
as specially requested customisations
are available to the discerning Chinese
individualist, who is only limited by his
imagination.
Mr. Andy Xing, Vice Executive
General Manager of Jiaochen Bufori
(Shanghai) Motor Sales Co., Ltd.,
explains: “Our customers appreciate
the fine details and workmanship of the
Bufori cars and generally spend a lot of
time customising their personal vehicles,
which becomes like an extension of their
unique personalities. They have the
opportunity to express their creativity
and add their very own personal touch.”
One of the highlights of this luxurious
saloon is the rear centre console, which
can accommodate a coffee machine, minibar, fridge and even a fine bone China tea
set with instant hot & cold water. Each
Bufori Geneva requires in excess of 6,000
man hours to handcraft and customise.
“We are happy to finally introduce the
Bufori Geneva to the Chinese market,
which has become the most dynamic
luxury market on a global scale. Our
distributor and customers have been
anxiously waiting for the Bufori Geneva
and we are convinced that it will surpass
their expectations” adds Mr. Felix Haller,
General Manager of BUFORI.
Expansion plans in China
The participation at the Beijing Motor
Show is a milestone in addition to the
recent opening of a flagship showroom
in Shanghai. Furthermore, Bufori is
planning to set-up additional dealerships
throughout China, with showrooms to
be established in Beijing, Chengdu and
Shenzhen.

NEW CAR
Hyundai Sonata, the mid-size sedan that
sent competitors back to the drawing
board, is back for its third model year. In
2011, Sonata was the third best-selling
mid-size sedan at retail, ahead of Nissan
Altima, Ford Fusion and Chevy Malibu.
This retail sales success comes with the
segment’s lowest incentive spending,
averaging just a third of these three
competitors’ levels, the highest ratio
of transaction price to MSRP and the
highest residual values. Sonata owners
in 2011 were also more satisfied with
their car’s fuel economy, design and
value than owners of Camry, Accord,
Altima, Fusion and Malibu, according to
the J.D. Power 2011 APEAL Study.
For 2013, Sonata builds on its
trailblazing recipe of high-design and
high fuel efficiency with more features,
higher value, and better residual value
than ever before.
Recognizing the Sonata’s remarkable
combination of high retail sales, low fleet
mix and low incentive spending, ALG
has rewarded the 2013 Hyundai Sonata
with its best-ever residual value of 60
percent, a remarkable achievement for a
car in the third year of its life cycle.
Sonata SE now comes with standard
heated front seats and Sonata Limited
comes standard with a traditional
sunroof, while a panoramic sunroof
is now part of the Limited Premium
Package for 2013. Sonata also continues
its remarkable level of fuel efficiency,
with ratings of 24 mpg city, 28 combined,
and 35 on the highway, the highest
levels of owner-reported fuel economy
satisfaction in the mid-size segment,
and best power-to-weight ratio in the
segment.
upscale ambiance thanks to a flowthrough center console and instrument
panel. These flowing surfaces
complement the exterior design and
wrap around the driver and passengers.
ADVANCED POWERTRAINS
The 2013 Sonata is powered by the
original Theta II GDI 2.4-liter fourcylinder engine with a Gasoline DirectInjection (GDI) fuel delivery system,
which contributes to improved fuel
efficiency and lower emissions.
Sonata delivers an impressive 24
mpg city/35 mpg estimated highway
fuel economy rating with the standard
six-speed automatic transmission with
SHIFTRONIC®. The horsepower and
torque ratings for the Theta II GDI are
198 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque.
With the 2.0-liter Theta II
turbocharged GDI engine, the 2013
Sonata offers an unprecedented
combination of segment-leading
fuel efficiency and power – with 274
horsepower The 2.0T engine is available
on the SE and Limited trim levels.

FLUIDIC SCULPTURE DESIGN
LANGUAGE
Fluidic Sculpture is a consistent,
cohesive design language that is
used throughout the entire Hyundai
showroom. It considers the interplay of
natural, fluid elements with more rigid
surfaces and structures to create the
illusion of constant motion. The exterior
of the Sonata is long, light and low. The
high beltline allows for a long, sleek
roofline accented by a third window. A
monoform side profile includes flowing
lines highlighted by a Hyundai signature
chrome accent that spans the length of
the car.
The sophisticated look continues
inside, where Hyundai has created an
13
fully automatic temperature control
system, and the Limited adds the SE’s
18-inch hyper silver alloy wheels, dual
exhaust, and steering wheel-mounted
paddle shifters. All 2013 Sonatas utilize
a six-speed automatic transmission with
SHIFTRONIC® manual control.
SUPPLE RIDE, AGILE HANDLING
An advanced four-wheel independent
suspension system combines a supple
ride with precise handling and steering
response for Sonata GLS, Limited
and Hybrid models. Sonata uses
MacPherson strut front and multi-link
rear suspension systems with increased
travel for improved wheel control and
a smoother ride. All four wheels are
controlled by coil springs, fade-resistant
dual flow dampers and stabilizer bars.
The suspension has been optimized to
keep the vehicle flat during cornering
and provide quick turn-in response.
The rear suspension uses aluminum
components to reduce weight and
improve suspension performance. The
Sonata SE is an even more exciting and
willing partner for drivers who prefer

sportier ride and handling dynamics. All
Sonatas are equipped with motor-driven
electric power steering that adjusts
instantly to changing driving conditions
while improving fuel economy over a
conventional steering system.
HYUNDAI PACKAGING EFFICIENCY
The sleek design, combined with
Hyundai’s expertise in interior packaging,
delivers class-leading interior comfort,
functionality and practicality. A sleek
roofline typically compromises headroom
and interior volume, the Sonata has
more interior volume than many of its
key competitors.
Sonata is rich in ultra-high-strength
steel, leading to world-class body
rigidity. The Sonata owes its ability to
deliver both strong performance and
excellent fuel economy in great part to its
impressive power-to-weight efficiency.
ADVANCED STANDARD SAFETY
TECHNOLOGIES: PART OF
HYUNDAI’S ASSURANCE
COMMITMENT
Sonata was built from the ground

up with safety in mind, with a hot
stamped ultra-high-strength steel body
structure, advanced airbag technology
and Electronic Stability Control (ESC),
delivering on Hyundai’s commitment to
both active and passive safety technology
leadership. Every 2013 Sonata has
lifesaving ESC as standard equipment.
This is important, because the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) has reported that ESC results
in 35 percent fewer single-vehicle
crashes and 30 percent fewer singlevehicle fatalities in passenger cars. The
Sonata also features a state-of-the-art
braking package. The package includes
four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock
Braking System (ABS) including Brake
Assist, which provides maximum braking
force when a panic stop is detected, and
Electronic Brake-force Distribution
(EBD) to automatically adjust the
braking force to front and rear axles
based on the vehicle loading conditions.
Sonata features six airbags—
including dual front, front seat-mounted
side-impact, and front and rear side
curtain airbags—along with active
front-seat head restraints. Other passive
safety features include shingle-style
rear-seat head restraints for improved
visibility, three-point seatbelts for all
seating positions, front-seat seatbelt
pretensioners and force limiters and a
rear-seat Lower Anchors and Tethers for
Children (LATCH) system for child seats.

G-POWER M3 E46
WITH 450 HP
now the “old m3” is quicker
than the “new m3”
450 hp for the BMW M3 E46, that’s
quiet impressive. The G-POWER SK I
“SPORTY DRIVE” supercharger system
provides the 3.2 l straight cylinder
engine from the BMW M GmbH with the
necessary boost to push the output from
standard 343 hp/365 Nm to awesome
450 hp/460 Nm. 20 inch G-POWER
“SILVERSTONE DIAMOND” alloy
wheels with MICHELIN Pilot Sport
tyres in the dimensions 245/30 ZR 20
and 285/25 ZR 20, G-POWER coil-over
suspension, G-POWER braking system
and a stainless steel sport rear muffler
featuring the legendary G-POWER
“DEEPTONE” technology complete the
G-POWER package for the BMW M3 E46.
G-POWER M3 E46
• 450 hp / 331 kW at 7.000 rpm (+ 107
hp / 79 kW)
• 460 Nm at 5.500 rpm (+ 95 Nm)
• V-max: 300 km/h
• 0-200 km/h: 14,7s
• G-POWER 20’’ wheel set
SILVERSTONE DIAMOND
• G-POWER stainless steel rear muffler
• G-POWER coil-over suspension GM3-
RS
• G-POWER Braking System for front
and rear axle
After getting the BMW E46
scene ecstatic with the 550 PS strong
G-POWER M3 with integrated 5.0l M5
V10 engine, by the way the only one
on the market, G-POWER launches
another product for serious performance
upgrade for the BMW M3 E46, that
will fascinate the M- enthusiasts.
Being the leading manufacturer of
after market supercharger systems for
BMW automobiles it is no surprise that
G-POWER naturally relies on forced
induction for its new product based on the
premium superchargers from ASA.
And the result is awesome! Despite
the fact that G-POWER did not go for the
expensive compression reducing forged
pistons and even the exhaust system
stays untouched, reliable 450 hp and 460
Nm of torque could be realized for the
BMW M3 E46.
The secret behind this power
explosion under the bonnet of the
G-POWER M3 E46 is the large ASA
16
T1-518 centrifugal supercharger. By the
way, the ASA superchargers are being
used in the ALPINA models B5S, B6S
and B7 as well, just like the ALPINA
B6 GT3 race car, in witch the chargers
could state there impressive quality and
reliability during several 24th hour race
in the “Green Hell” of the Nürburgring!
The exclusive use of components meeting
OEM standards is one of the basic
elements of the G-POWER philosophy and
one of the secrets for the extraordinary
quality, reliability and performance of the
G-POWER products.
Of course a 107 hp additional power
leave its marks at the performance
figures. The figure from stand still to
200 km/h improves from standard 18,1
seconds to impressive 14,7 seconds. Not
bad for a car that has been introduced
almost 10 years ago and now is even
quicker than the current 420 hp strong
BMW M3 V8 with its 15,8 seconds.
Accompanying measures in regards of
wheels, suspension, brakes and exhaust
system complete the G-POWER program
for the BMW M3 E46.
Together with the 20 inch G-POWER
NEW CAR
“SILVERSTONE DIAMOND” alloy
wheels set and the MICHELIN Pilot
Sport tyres a top speed of more than
300 km/h is achievable. The G-POWER
SILVERSTONE alloy wheels have been
exclusively designed for the current
BMW models. Due to the successful
combination of double spokes and the
“concave design” typical of G-POWER
they separate the BMW M3 E46 form
the rest of the mass production. The
G-POWER “diamond cut” provides for the
fascinating dynamic appearance of the
G-POWER SILVESTONE rim, in contrast
to the silver-graphite coated rim body and
the bolt applications of stainless steel.
An additional feature of the G-POWER
SILVERSTONE rim is its weightoptimised design that allows a low rim
weight with the same stability, compared
to other standard wheels.
Of course the negative acceleration is
in the focus of G-POWER, as well. Even
without output increase, the standard
braking system may lose brake force
when pushed to the limit, accompanied
by a moving braking point, the so called
fading effect. The perfect cure against
the fading effect is a G-POWER Braking
System. With its up to six brake pistons
and up to 370 mm brake disc diameter
for the front axle and 342 mm for the
rear axle, the G-POWER Braking System
enables a substantially higher
brake force than the standard
braking system. At the same time, the
heat generated due to the braking process
can be dissipated more effectively. The
G-POWER brake package is completed by
brake pads with a larger pad area, higher
friction rate as well as metal-coated brake
lines. With this set-up, the G-POWER
Braking System always provides
maximum brake force and the braking
point remains precise in any case.
Not included in the G-POWER SK I
„SPORTY DRIVE“ supercharger system
for the BMW E46 M3, but still worth
a second thought, is the G-POWER
17
sports rear muffler. This rear muffler is
completely hand made out of stainless
steel on the in- and outside and grants
for a perfect fit thanks to OEM standard
product quality. Though when you fire
up the engine and the throaty G-POWER
sound emerges the 4 x 76 mm end pipes
of the G-POWER sports rear muffler,
all those attributes are swept aside. The
sound is strong in low revs and is getting
more and more aggressive the higher
you rev. With this setup the G-POWER
sports rear muffler underlines perfectly
the significantly increased power of the
BMW M3 E46. The patented G-POWER
“DEEPTONE” technology is responsible
for this extraordinary sound pattern.

NEW CAR
RECOGNIZED AS “BEST
VALUES” BY USAA
Financial services provider USAA named
both the 2012 Hyundai Elantra and 2012
Hyundai Genesis Sedan as 2012 “Best
Value” vehicle picks. USAA rated cars in
16 different categories with a proprietary
vehicle rating system using quantitative
data that takes factors such as cost,
safety, reliability and fuel economy into
consideration. Both Hyundai vehicles
were recognized for offering the best
financial value in their respective
segments; the Elantra topped the small
sedan category and the Genesis sedan
won in the large luxury sedan category.
Elantra also made it onto USAA’s Top
10 for Teens list. The list was compiled
from the results of a recent survey that
identified the top 10 USAA Preferred
vehicles that possess reliability, a
high safety rating and affordable auto
insurance. Additionally, four Hyundai
vehicles were also recognized with the
USAA Preferred designation: Sonata
(midsize sedan), Accent (small sedan),
Genesis Coupe (large luxury sedan), and
Santa Fe (midsize SUV).
“The goal of the list is to help
members identify vehicles that typically
offer better safety ratings, lower
insurance premium costs, higher fuel
economy, better overall reliability and
lower MSRP compared to other vehicles
in the same category,” said Steve
Thompson, assistant vice president,
USAA. “The Elantra and Genesis both
rose to the top as vehicles that offer these
key elements, making them great buys for
the value-minded consumer.”
The 2012 North American Car of
the Year Elantra adds an ActiveECO
System for 2012 that modifies engine
and transmission control to smooth out
throttle response and increase real-world
fuel economy by up to seven percent.
Elantra’s standard fuel economy is 29
mpg city and 40 mpg highway, and is
powered by an all-new 1.8-liter Nu fourcylinder engine with 148 horsepower and
131 lb-ft of torque.
Hyundai’s Genesis sedan, the
2009 North American Car of the Year,
continues its segment leadership in 2012
with exterior design improvements, new
direct injection technology for its Lambda
V6 engine, new eight-speed automatic
transmissions, and enhanced chassis
tuning. In addition, a new 5.0-liter direct
19
injection V8 engine is now available
exclusively with the 5.0 R-Spec model,
which includes unique 19-inch machinedfinish alloy wheels, optional Bridgestone
Potenza S-04 Pole Position summer
performance tires and sport-tuned
transmission, suspension and steering
calibrations for exhilarating vehicle
dynamics.
“The Elantra upholds Hyundai’s
commitment to value with emotional
design, 40 mpg highway fuel economy
and outstanding residual value,” said
Scott Margason, director of Product
Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The
Genesis sedan also continues to provide
ground-breaking value among its luxury
competition with lavish features and
impressive driving performance. Both
cars continue to exceed expectations for
consumers in their respective segments.”
MOTORSPORTS
PROTON MISSES
OUT ON PODIUM
in new caledonia
but enjoys
consolation finish
20
MOTORSPORTS
PROTON concluded a challenging round
2 in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship
(APRC) with a series of misfortunes
denying the team of a strong podium
finish.
Despite starting Rally New Caledonia
strongly, PROTON was not only forced
to concede the lead going into the
second day but also suffered one early
retirement.
Defending APRC champion Alister
McRae retired in the second special stage
but continued on the final day under
Super Rally format, winning three of
the day’s six special stages to secure 7
valuable championship points.
McRae finished day 3 ahead of
Skoda’s Gaurav Gill and Chris Atkinson
but was not eligible for a podium finish.
Atkinson won the rally ahead of team
mate Gill with Brian Greene in third.
Meanwhile, having led the rally
on the opening day and setting fastest
times in three of the four special stages,
PROTON team mate PG Andersson was
also forced to relinquish his lead on the
second day of rallying.
Andersson’s Satria Neo S2000
experienced an abrupt loss of power as a
result of a water crossing, a predicament
that would later cost him to lose more
than 14 minutes and dropping the
Swedish driver to fourth in the APRC
category.
With a large deficit to make up,
Andersson however, was denied the
chance of a roaring comeback on the third
21
and final day by a second mechanical
failure.
Rally New Caledonia was contested
over a competitive distance of 252.82km
covering 19 special stages.
“We had hoped for a repeat of last
year’s double podium results in New
Caledonia but the reality of rallying
is such that all the hardwork and
preparation is never a guarantee of
a strong finish,” said Datuk Abdul
Razak Dawood, the Head of PROTON
Motorsports.
“Having said this we take back some
consolation in the fact that the Satria Neo
S2000 is at it most competitive form in
the hands of both McRae and Andersson
having set a blistering pace at the head of
the competition”
Meanwhile, PROTON’s director of
group marketing, branding and motorsport
John D. Chacko said Satria Neo S2000’s
performance in New Caledonia earned the
team renewed admiration and respect.
“The fighting spirit of the two drivers
clearly outweighed the misfortunes we
endured in New Caledonia and this only
goes towards strengthening our resolve as
we focus on the remaining rounds in the
championship.”
MOTORSPORTS
first british f3 win for
JAZEMAN JAAFAR IN PAU
Young Malaysian driver, Jazeman
Jaafar, was on the top step of the
podium on Saturday in Pau, France,
celebrating his first win in the British
F3 International Series. A second place
finish on Sunday backed up his brilliant
victory and with these strong results he
now lies second in the overall British F3
Drivers’ Championship.
PETRONAS-supported Jaafar,
competing in the third round of British
F3 at the weekend, showed his everimproving driving skills at one of the
most challenging tracks on the F3
calendar, the temporary circuit on the
streets of Pau, France, built for the
annual Grand Prix de Pau weekend,
an historical event in the motorsport
calendar. Joining with the European F3
Championship for the two races, Jaafar
was on top form right from the start.
In the opening practice session
Jaafar set the pace in the early stages of
the session, finishing second quickest of
the British F3 drivers and third overall.
In scorching temperatures Jaafar hit top
gear in the afternoon practice session,
posting the quickest lap time of the
session overall, over a tenth of a second
clear of his nearest rival.
Of his
outstanding performance on the first
day of running Jaafar said, “I’ve been
working really hard with the team to
prepare for this weekend and those
efforts have paid off. The experience of
having raced here last year has helped,
but there are some great drivers and a
big field, so I’m really pleased to be the
pace setter and show my potential.”
Saturday morning qualifying
produced the anticipated frantic fight
for clear track to secure the best starting
position and Jaafar was always one
of the front men in the session. An F3
Euroseries driver, Ferrari F1 protégé,
Raffaele Marciello, took pole position for
both of the races with the two quickest
laps of the session. Jaafar set the best
lap time of the British F3 runners to
take third on the grid for the first race
behind two Euro F3 drivers, and also
lined up third for the second race, having
posted second quickest lap time of the
British F3 drivers for this grid.
The first of the two races, held
in hot, dry conditions on Saturday
afternoon, was won by F3 Euro Series
driver Marciello, but it was Jaafar who
starred in the British F3
fight for honours. The
19-year-old driver
didn’t have the
22
best of starts off the line, but he soon
put this behind him and chased after
the cars ahead. When second and third
placed drivers, Daniel Juncadella and
Pascal Wehrlein collided at a hairpin,
Jaafar slid through into second place. A
safety car period to recover the stricken
cars bunched up the field and Jaafar was
keen to use the opportunity to challenge
for the lead. Jaafar made a bold, spirited
attempt on Marciello at the restart and
his Italian rival had to defend hard to
stay ahead, but he was able to pull away
from Jaafar and retain the lead until
the chequered flag. Jaafar’s outstanding
drive was rewarded with the Carlin
driver’s first British F3 victory and
second place overall in the race.
Jaafar reviewed his superb race
saying, “I didn’t have a good start, so I
was then on the back foot, but I kept my
head down and could benefit from the
cars tangling ahead of me. At the restart
I made a big move to take the lead from
Raffaele, but just didn’t quite have the
speed to make it work. I’m really happy
to have beaten the British F3 field and
take my first win in the series, as I’ve
been waiting a long time for it. My
first win, together with listening to my
national anthem, the “Negaraku”, made
this very a very special day; it was an
amazing feeling. The support
from home has never stopped
motivating me to be on top.”
The main Grand Prix de
Pau feature race was held
yesterday and Jaafar, lining
up in third place, once again
showed his gritty driving and
front-running pace. Polesitter Marciello was off the
line first, with Jaafar’s team
mate Carlos Sainz close behind in
second. Marciello had the speed to
keep a distance from the Carlin men and
it was Jaafar who was attacking Sainz
hard from the start, while also having
to defend from Juncadella behind him.
The Malaysian youngster kept his cool,
pressurizing Sainz while staying clear of
Juncadella throughout the race, to finish
third on the road and second in British
F3.
