PILGRIM HAPPENINGS Issue # Pilgrim Happenings SUMMER 2016 June, July & August טוֹב You may not know this about me, but I love the Hebrew language. So let me share with you the rich meaning of one short word that will give you plenty to ponder during the long, sunny summer months. It’s not homework for the summer. It’s a spiritual gift that will help you feel closer to God and this wonderful world. The word that I would like to share with you is ט וֹ ב (tov) which usually means “good” like in “Mazel tov!” which means “Good luck!” However, there are other, less known meanings of this short but powerful word. It also means “beautiful” and “working the way it’s supposed to.” Where do we encounter the word “tov” in our English translation of the Hebrew Bible? For example in Genesis chapter 1 you come across a sentence and its variations several times: “And God saw that it was good (tov).” Imagine that at the end of every day, however long that was, God saw that the stars, moon, sun, trees, flowers, animals, and people were not simply “good” but also “beautiful.” Isn’t this awesome? Isn’t our Bible full of little surprises? Writing this article did change my mind about one thing. I do want to give you homework for the summer. ☺ Read the first chapter of the Bible (Genesis 1, not the Introduction) remembering to think about the other meanings of “good.” I know you will look at the world from a whole different perspective. Meditate on the love and care with which God created our Universe, and share that with others. This summer many of you will go on vacation and see amazing natural beauty in PILGRIM HAPPENINGS | Issue # New Hampshire, Maine, New York and other more exotic places. Even when you are not able to attend church services at Pilgrim Church UCC, your spiritual home, I would like you to remember that God’s handiwork is everywhere you look. There is a sermon overflowing with goodness as far as the eye can see. God’s creation is not only good, but also beautiful. You are a part of God’s creation. You and I are God’s creatures. You and I are wonderfully made, for we were born out of God’s love. We are not only good, but also beautiful children of the Living God. Have a lot of fun in nature this summer. At the same time, when you are not away, come to church. I want you to have fun, but hopefully, you won’t be on vacation every week of the summer. Enjoy the summer, but don’t forget about your friends at Pilgrim Church UCC, where every Sunday is an opportunity to get closer to God and grow spiritually. Have a “tov” summer! Rev. Compost: A mixture consisting largely of decayed organic matter used for fertilizing and improving the soil in a garden. Is your garden tired? Is your soil weak, thin and worn out? Are your flowers and vegetables not as pretty or productive as they used to be? Do you want rosier roses, dillier dahlias, more petulant petunias? Pledges Remember, just because its summer doesn’t mean the bills go on vacation! Please remember to send in your pledges. You can mail them to: Pilgrim Church 4 Watson Street Nashua, NH 03064 Doesn’t your family deserve peppier peppers, zipper zucchinis, and squishier squashes? Then just add some Holy Moldy Compost to your soil and watch your garden grow. That’s right, folks, here at Pilgrim Church we have accumulated a high quality pile of decomposed grass clippings and now you too can see the difference that adding decaying matter to your family’s plot can make. And best of all – it FREE. That’s right folks, I said FREE. And remember, just because it’s rotten doesn’t mean it’s bad. Holy Moldy Compost, the official compost of the Garden of Eden. Holy Moldy is not a registered anything. Any claims made by gardeners regarding the size of their tomatoes have not been verified by the Department of Agriculture and are probably an exaggeration or an outright lie. This compost has not been certified so it cannot be labeled organic, but let’s face it, it’s rotting vegetation so how can it not be organic. We don’t deliver so don’t even bother to ask. Shoveling and handling not included. Written by Dan Pare’ PILGRIM HAPPENINGS | Issue # 5 Our newest scouts enjoyed ice cream after the ride. Our bike trip on Martha's Vineyard at the end of April vacation was a fantastic trip! We had 13 adults and 12 scouts attend. Overall, the weather was perfect for biking on Saturday. We had three bike groups and each group did either 20 or 40 miles. Our newest scouts did real well with the camping, cooking and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Thank you to Paul Guertin for coordinating the trip and to all our drivers, leaders and trailer tower (Dan Richardson) May was a busy month for both Pack 19 and Troop 19. Our Pack meeting was held on 5/5/16. Both the Pack and Troop supported the church cleanup day on 5/7/16. PILGRIM HAPPENINGS | Issue # 6 On May 13 to May 15, Troop 19 held a skills training camp out at Hidden Valley scout camp to teach the new scouts woods tools, fire building, cooking and hiking skills and introduce the new scouts to our council summer camp. Soaring Like An Eagle Article By: Adam Brownstein On 5/14/16, the Webelos den from Pack 19 hiked Mines Falls Park in Nashua. The church is welcome to attend the Packs end of year BBQ at Camp Ducet in Nashua on June 11 @ 3 PM and stay through our closing camp fire. Everyone in the church is invited on June 5 at 4:00 PM in the Pilgrim Church sanctuary, to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Spencer Richardson and Adam Brownstein. Spencer Richardson’s Eagle Scout project report was included in the April Scouting Corner within Pilgrim Happenings. An overview of Adam’s Eagle project is given below: The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest rank one can achieve in the Boy Scouts of America, and a prestigious award at that. Since the Boy Scouts of America started in 1910 only 5% of boys who have joined a Boy Scout Troop has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. To achieve this rank you have to first earn the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life, earn at least 21 merit badges (13 required and 8 alternates), and show leadership through a service project of some sorts, all before their 18th Birthday. Many think of an Eagle Scout Service Project as being construction or landscaping related, but Adam Brownstein of Troop 19 had a different idea... create Video Public Service Messages. The process of getting this all done was a long one for Adam and it began with getting it approved. Upon getting proper approval from various people, including an Eagle Scout committee, which ultimately approved the project, Adam was off in his race against time to try to complete his project. To help do so, he marked what needed to happen and when by going off of the Three Stages of Production; Pre-Production, (which consists of everything that needs to happen before filming such as making a shot sheet, securing equipment, getting approval, getting actors. PILGRIM HAPPENINGS | Issue # making a filming schedule, writing scripts, etc.) Production (which is the stage that filming transpires,) and PostProduction, (which is the stage where editing and re-shoots occur.) After weeks of hard work, over 160 service hours, and many memories Adam finished his project, got the rest of his requirements done, turned in his paper-work and went before the Eagle Scout Board of Review, where he was approved of the highest rank. About the whole process this is what he had to say; “It was certainly a stressful timeframe of trying to get this done, but overall it was a fun time, and it was amazing to get help from my friends, family, classmates, fellow scouters, scout leaders, and teachers’/faculty who helped me get this done. I couldn’t have done this without them and their support and help. Throughout the process I certainly adapted and improved my leadership skills and Video Production Skills. In order to not be doing all of this work myself, I worked together with a couple people to write the scripts and “plot points” of said Public Service Announcements, scheduled when and where to film, recruited/asked around for help, trained people on how to use the video production equipment such as the lighting equipment (for the videos that needed lights indoors), audio equipment, and camera, and used people as actors to star in said Public Service Announcements, where I served as the director. 7 Overall, the feedback I got from the cast and crew members who worked on the project was they had a lot of fun, and with a few problem solving skills here and there I think the project was a success. I hope that these videos can be used as teaching implements for classes such as the Health Classes for many years to come, as the topic matters can be mixed easily into the curriculum. For those of you who helped me out, you know who you are and I thank you a ton for it, it’s a really long list of people so I can’t name everyone but it’s just really humbling and an honor for you to be in on this experience, and for some people you may not know that you helped the project in some way but you’d be surprised what deed, whether big or small, helped me through this. Boy Scouting is a great and strong program to have your son in, and you certainly gain a lot from your experiences within it, and I can say, especially with Troop 19, Boy Scouting is something that gives you memories, lessons, and knowledge that’ll last a lifetime.” A way to get involved and support Adam and his project is by watching Adam’s Eagle Scout PSA Videos’ by going to https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=XKRrSeiFT_U&list=UUrD p8dm2nVDoFBaXUciPf-NA or by going onto YouTube and going on the channel labeled Adam’s Eagle Scout Project. You are cordially invited to an Eagle Court of Honor to recognize Spencer Richardson and Adam Brownstein For their achievement of the Boy Scouts of America rank of Eagle Scout The Court of Honor will be held at Pilgrim Church, 4 Watson Street, Nashua, NH On Sunday, June 5th at 4PM Our 11th Annual Yard Sale Was a success! The Yard Sale raised $480.00 and the Thrift Shop did $475. Thank you to everyone who helped!
