The imperial summer resort
Die Weilbu rg von Os t v. Vinzent R eim
Franz I., the “benevolent Kaiser”, visited Baden for
the first time in 1796 in order to take the waters
there, and immediately fell in love with this beautiful little city to the south of Vienna. He thereafter
spent nearly every summer in Baden, and from
1804-1836 made the city his official “imperial
summer residence”. Architecture, art, and horticulture enjoyed a golden age during this period,
with architects such as Carl von Moreau, Josef
Kornhäusel, and Otto Wagner leaving their mark
in the form of noble patrician houses, palaces, and
beautiful city squares.
"...so that one wishes one's eyes
could be in all places at once!"
The city of Baden has always drawn in visitors,
with its close proximity to Vienna and its spectrum
of leisure activities and entertainment to meet all
tastes. A further inducement for a visit was provided by Baden's enchanting parks, perfect for
strolling in, as well as its wealth of theatres and
concerts, and the city itself – its self-contained
and homely size and its beautiful architecture.
The Berlin composer Karl Friedrich Zelter visited
Baden in 1819, and from here wrote numerous
letters to his friend Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Some of these read like a veritable love letter to
the city: "Of a Sunday, the park situated directly
by my apartment (which is itself located at the
foot of the Calvary Hill [editor's note: the Kurpark]) is akin to a Turkish paradise. The number of
beautiful women in Vienna becomes apparent on
Sunday mornings after 11 o’clock, when they go
promenading in all their finery, so that one wishes
one's eyes could be in all places at once. There are
many beautiful women here, especially those of
middle years: smooth, pure and neither covered
nor hidden away, they are some of the most
charming creatures I have laid eyes on...".
... And what of Baden today? Come for a visit and
see for yourself!
The Kaiser's presence quickly brought with it an
influx of aristocrats and rich citizens, who had
beautiful buildings erected in Baden. The city's
status was increased yet further with the presence of famous artists and composers. Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann
Strauß Senior and Junior, and Franz Grillparzer
are just some names on the list of luminaries who
regularly visited the city. Beethoven composed
his 9th Symphony here with the “Ode to Joy”,
which is why Baden is today also called the “City of
the European Anthem”. The great composers of
this era founded a cultural tradition in Baden that
continues to this day.

The ARNULF RAINER MUSEUM in Baden bei Wien
brings together the architectural splendour of the
former Frauenbad and the oeuvre of the worldfamous artist Arnulf Rainer. The work of this
Baden native (*1929) is presented in a richly faceted way through two exhibitions a year, as well
as through monographs and in dialogues with his
contemporaries and fellow artists. International,
long-time aficionados such as Helmut Friedel
(director of the Städtische Galerie at the Lenbachhaus in Munich) and Rudi Fuchs (former director
of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam) curate the
exhibitions. Through exhibitions, events, guided
tours, art education programmes for children and
young people, and publications, a regional as well
as international public is thus provided with comprehensive insights into Arnulf Rainer's works,
which play a pivotal role in the collections of the
world's greatest museums.

Baden – city of music
Baden – operetta metropolis
Baden owes its good reputation as the city of
music and operettas to the imperial court and, of
course, the artists. Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert,
Strauß, Lanner – they all chose Baden as their summer resort and found inspiration in the busy social
life, the vineyards and the charming landscape in
the Vienna Woods. To this day, the cultural life in
Baden is intensely vibrant and diversified.
The municipal theatre and the summer arena
in the spa park are the two locations for Bühne
Baden, the “Baden stage”, with a repertoire that
is, hihgly successfully, especially dedicated with
great success especially to the many facets of
operettas and has become a trademark. But musical and straight theatre are also shown along with
guest play performances from the national theatre of Lower Austria during the winter season.
Two operettas, one musical and one play make
up the 2015 summer program on the stage of
Bühne Baden. The summer arena can defy any
kind of weather with its closable glass roof and
guarantees unforgettable summer evening in the
enchanting atmosphere of the spa park of Baden!
The Baden summer arena has been in its unique
historical setting for more than 100 years, nestled
in an exceptional garden within the spa gardens,
a place for sophisticated entertainment.
Whether it the summer spa concerts in spa park,
the Operetta Festival in the summer arena, the
winter season of Baden's municipal theatre, alternative art and youth culture in the “Theater am
Steg”, or the shows and events at the Congress
Casino Baden – there is always something happening here.

What is the simplest way to train
the cardiovascular system?
You don't necessarily need a heart-rate monitor to stay fit. Listen to your body! At least
twice a week, try and do 30 mins of the kind
of exercise that leaves you just enough breath
to talk while you're doing it. When performing this exercise, e.g. brisk walking, jogging
or cycling, you should do it at a level that is
"slightly difficult". You will then be exercising
at the optimum level of intensity.
Happy exercising!

blossoms in the city's colours of red and white,
is the embodiment of the Kordes family's 125

newly christened queen of the flowers meets
all of these with flying colours. She can be
admired at the Baden Rosarium (flower bed

The special thing about our regional wines is
not only their variety but also their potential.
With wines such as Rotgipfler, Zierfandler, St.
Laurent and Pinot Noir in particular, it is often
worth allowing them to age for a few years.
Their flavours are then often more harmonious, and their individual character comes to
the fore much more clearly. Experience this for
yourself by sampling different vintages at the
Thermenregion Gebietsvinothek enoteca, and
discover the potential of the Vienna Woods
thermal region.

Treading delightful paths
Even in the olden days, when the imperial family
was still vacationing in Baden near Vienna, they
know about the invigorating effect of gentle
exercise outdoors…
Not athletic agony but the joy of fresh forest air
and the knowledge of doing something for your
body – that is the “sports understanding” in the
Vienna Woods. On two wheels, on horseback or
on your own two feet – numerous paths are ready
to take you through Vienna Woods.
From the Vienna Basin to the Traisen and Gölsen
area: 1,300 square kilometres of intact nature
in the immediate proximity of a megacity are a
unique setting worldwide. Undulating wooded
sandstone hills in the west, steep chalkstone rocks
in the east, broadleaf and pine forests, interrupted
by meadows and fields, shape the landscape.

Whether on the musical Beethoven hiking path,
the romantic “Wegerl during the Helenental –
paths through Helenental valley” or the spiritual
places of the Via Sacra – witnesses of the long historical past can be found everywhere.
These also include Mayerling, the site of the tragedy surrounding crown prince Rudolph, and Heiligenkreuz monastery where monks sing powerful
„Gregorianian chants”.
Hans-Georg Proksch
Sports coaching – "Achieving goals together"
But there is another destination that may entice
many a hiker or bicyclist: the wine growing on
these romantic hills can be tasted in many small
taverns along the bicycling and hiking trails.
My favourite walk – up to the castle ruin
“Rauheneck” using my Nordic walking
poles! The path leads past the stone crest of
the erstwhile Schloss Weilburg. Here, amidst
one of the region's many fir-tree forests,
begins the ascent to the ruins. Once you arrive
at the top, some stairs lead up to the "Bergfried", or central tower – here, a viewing platform provides some of the best views in the
entire region.

Escape from the strains of everyday life and recharge your batteries amidst the beautiful nature of the Helenental 6 miles from Baden. The Krainerhütte provides you with views of beautiful greenery as far as the eye can
see. Thanks to the "nature indoors" concept, which has been implemented in combination with a complete
remodelling of the hotel, the "pact with nature" is also consistently continued indoors: new garden design
rooms, natural materials, huge panorama windows, and much more symbolise the connection to nature and
provide a fresh look. Directly behind the hotel are located expansive hiking, walking and cycling trails. Culture
lovers will also find what they need, thanks to numerous destinations for outings in the immediate vicinity.
Round off your stay by spending some time in the spirit park or by the camp fire in our tipi, by going on a
night-time lantern-lit walk, or by enjoying a tasty buffet in our new restaurant. Whether you are planning a
holiday with your whole family together with your dog, a cosy stay for two, or are interested in signing up for
an interesting seminar – the Krainerhütte and its idyllic location in nature provide the ideal venue.
