Bedbug outbreak reveals deeper issues at WHPK

The suspension of programing at
the University of Chicago's radio
station WHPK due to a bedbug outbreak has caused several DJs to resign citing unfair treatment as a
major concern.
This decision comes after the
issue of bed bugs arose in early August after an outbreak was found at
the studio and not completely
treated.
In a letter to the DJs that worked
with the station, the university reiterated how seriously they are taking
the problem and how they plan to
proceed with locating the source of
the outbreak.
To offset the infestation problem
for the DJs, WHPK has allocated
funds to help cover the cost of home
inspections.
The letter also recognized the burden the problem is continuing to
place on their DJs, however, this
does not prevent bed bugs from
reintroduction into their private residences.

other DJs resigned because they
were initially told they would have
to pay for the home inspections.
They are also disgruntled about a
new policy that will require all DJs
to get background checks.
Since February, several DJs have
reached out to media outlets to express concerns about tactics they
believe the university is using to
whitewash the diversity of voices
and viewpoints on some of the station’s programs. In January, the U.
of C. implemented a policy requiring all non-university affiliated DJs
to submit to a background check in
order to continue working at the station.
Marielle Sainvilus, director of
public affairs at the U. of C. said the
community DJs are not being singled out, volunteers in all departments of the university must submit
to a background check. In regard to
the bedbugs, she said that this is
about the fourth time there has been
an outbreak in the studio and all
volunteer and student DJs will have
to submit to home inspections.
The university has since offered to
pay for the inspections if the DJs
use the Smithereen, the company of
the university’s choice.
Smith and Tyson agreed to the
background checks, in January but
according to Tyson, some DJs resigned right away.
“I was with the station from ’80 –
’85, I left and came back in ’97 and
was there a few days ago, if there
was something in my background
don’t you think it would have come
up by now?” Tyson said.
Despite the language in the letter
to the DJs that stated they had to
submit to background checks because they were not employees or
students at the U. of C., Marielle
Sainvilus, director of public affairs
at the U. of C., said in a written
statement that as a matter of policy,
all employees must undergo routine
background checks and registered
sex offender checks at the time of
hire.
Smith said he hopes that it is not
the intention of the university to
downsize the station to just U. of C.
student DJs.
“I talked about a lot of controversial topics and probably stirred the
pot a bit but that’s just to further dialogue,” Smith said. “These are discussions that need to be had.”
The station is hoping that its bedbug issue is resolved soon and
wants to resume radio programming
by Aug. 29 but the date is not definite.

Like most parks in Hyde Park, the
space located on Cornell Avenue
between 54th and 55th streets is undergoing a facelift, however, while
most parks are getting new swings
and slides, Cornell Park is embracing what is known as a “Nature Play
Space.”
A nature play space is an assigned
space within a park that is managed
organically by an organized group
of community members for the purpose of promoting spontaneous nature play by children, allowing them
to immerse themselves in nature,
participate in educational activities
led by an environmental educator or
forest school group.
The Cornell Park Advisory Council (CPAC) was organized last year
to develop a plan for how to best
serve the deteriorating park. Once
formed, CPAC applied for the
Neighborhood Enhancement Grant
from the South East Chicago Commission and the Hyde Park Bank,
which they received. With a little
over $2,000 for beautification, it
was time to plan the park.

park was too small for the park district to put any real money into the

PACs last spring where they saw
park district employees give a presentation on natural play spaces.
“It was great for us to know there
were people in the Chicago Park
District (CPD) that were as interested in alternative spaces as we
were,” Bell said.

bureaucratic hurdles for approval.
The plans were approved and now
the council is working to identify
the types of nature play features the
kids want. Since the adults are
charged with maintenance and upkeep, Bell is hoping this will not
only excite the kids but bring the
community together for a common
cause.
“We’ll have formal work days
once a month to keep up with maintenance but I think we have enough
people in CPAC and the neighborhood that are willing to jump in and
help,” Bell said.
Nature based play spaces are not
new but they are gaining popularity
for a number of reasons. According
to the CPD, there are many benefits
for the children including spontaneous, self-guided play. Nature play
also has a beneficial impact on
health, attention and stress levels.
With frequent, repeated visits, habitats designed for nature play can become safe spaces for children to
develop motor skills, friendships,
creativity and a sense of place in the
environment.
The next CPAC meeting will take
place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13
at the Catholic Theological Union,

CPS librarians continue to decrease in number

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is
beginning its school year with 508
less teachers across the district, and,
according to reports, more than 60
school librarians have also been cut.
WBEZ recently reported that CPS
librarian numbers have been decreasing over the years, from 454 librarians budgeted in 2012 to 217 in
2015 and now this year, only 160.
For local schools, some haven’t had
a budget for a librarian in years.
According to the Every Student
Succeeds Act (ESSA), school librarians are not required, and the
decision to require librarians or
have librarians lies at the state level.
Bret Harte Elementary School,
1556 E. 56th St., has not had a librarian since several budget cuts
ago, and Reavis Elementary School,
834 E. 50th St., also currently does
not have a librarian. Shoesmith Elementary, 1330 E. 50th St., has not
had a librarian for two years.
“Our former librarian retired and
there was a shortage of librarians in
the talent pool to replace her,” said
Shoesmith principal, Sabrina Gates.
“As a result, Shoesmith doesn’t
offer ‘Library’ as a class anymore.
All of our books from the library
were moved into the classrooms and
we now use that space for general
music, band and the drum line.”
Gates said each classroom has its
own library where students check
out pieces of children and young
adult literature regularly.
Some of the now vacant school libraries have turned into testing centers or media centers where students
go to take tests or have extra study
time instead of browsing bookshelves and learning about the im-
portance of reading.
Not every school is struggling,
though. Kenwood Academy High
School, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave.,
and Murray Language Academy,
5335 S. Kenwood Ave., both have
librarians and successful library
programs for its students.
Ray Elementary School, 5631 S.
Kimbark Ave., also has a dedicated
librarian and parent volunteers. Ray
parent Anne Renna has volunteered
at the school’s library along with
another parent volunteer about two
hours per week to help in assisting
Ray’s full-time teaching librarian,
Linda Collins.
Renna said that from what she can
sense, librarians seem to be the first
to go when it comes to staff cuts at
CPS.
“Ray is fortunate to have an excellent school librarian,” Renna
said. “I think it is disgraceful that
our schools are not sufficiently
funded to ensure that every school
has a librarian.”

Montgomery Place staff member rescues neighbor from fire

Zesmond Woodard, director of security and
transportation at Montgomery Place, was recognized for saving someone from a house fire
during the Montgomery Place monthly staff
meeting on Aug. 26.
“Today, I want to shout out about one of your
co-workers who went above and beyond,”
Montgomery Place CEO Deborah Hart said at
the start of the meeting.
At 1 a.m. on Aug. 15, there was a house fire
at 76th Street and Drexel Avenue, the fire had
spread to three houses. Woodard was across the
street at the time and, seeing smoke and flames,
began knocking on doors to see who needed
help.
“We had called 911 first, got them to come,
then I just started instantly knocking on the
doors, making sure people are out of there,”
Woodard said. “It was crazy.”
Resident Niecy Freeman began shouting for
help for her father, who had a prosthetic leg and
was looking for it in the house. Woodard ran inside, found it under the bed, and helped Freeman get it on so they could leave the burning
building.
“I just wanted to help him out and see that he
got out okay,” Woodard said “I didn’t think of
the extremes of what could go wrong at the
time.”
Montgomery Place presented Woodard with
a trophy for his heroic deed.
“I don’t expect everybody to go running into
burning buildings,” Hart said to some laughter.
“But it is about service not just here where [we]
work but it’s in life all the way around.”

Washington Park residents examine effectiveness of CAPS

Washington Park Residents Advocacy Council discussed the relevance of the Chicago Alternative
Policing Strategy (CAPS) program
in its community during its meeting
on Aug. 20.
CAPS is a partnership between the
Chicago Police Department (CPD)
and the city’s 200 police districts.
Founded in 1993 as a pilot program with the motto “Together We
Can,” CAPS sought to revolutionize
the way inner city communities
dealt with crime by facilitating and
encouraging communication between residents and the CPD. The
program was successful with five
tested districts and one year later the
program was implemented through-
out the city.
Attendance, however, peaked in
1998 and has been on the decline
ever since.
By 2011 Chicago elected a new
mayor Rahm Emanuel, who in 2013
declared the organization had become nothing more than a bloated
bureaucracy.
Three years later, crime in the
greater Chicago area is as high as
it’s ever been, while community
participation is at an all time low.
While there are many different reasons for the decline in participation,
the question remains, how can
CAPS evolve with the changing climate of crime in Chicago, specifically on the south and west sides?
Residents can now tweet their
local police officers, send them
anonymous photos and videos or
reach them via Facebook, however,
the relationship between the CPD
and residents remain fractured: 20
percent of city residents believe the
CPD are untrustworthy.
The problem is particularly troublesome to the residents of Washington Park, as they have expressed
concern with even attending the
once monthly CAPS meetings because they don’t feel safe.

its gang activity. Attendance at the
CAPS is down to an average of
about five people a month.
At its last meeting, the council discussed the issue of CAPS meeting

needs to be changed but CAPS is either unwilling to change or they
don’t even know there is a need to
change the meeting location.
“Like everything in this city, it’s
political,” resident Andre Smith
said. “They’ll probably change the
location but there are bigger issues
that need to be addressed.”
Respect for the community is one
of them.
“The cops lost what little respect
they had in the community with the
code blue, they need to do away
with that,” Smith said. “But they
also don’t live in the community,
they don’t know who is in the community, where the hot spots. How
can they help us if they don’t know
us?”
Washington Park resident and
council member Durell Daniels
pointed to the disconnection between CPD and the communities
they serve.
“There used to be coordinated efforts to engage the community
through sporting events, the police
explorers group, even I was in the
explorers group,” Daniels said. “But
now I see CPD in the hood, I don’t
recognize them and I will probably
never see them again.”

In their first game of the
2016 IHSA football regular
season, the Kenwood Academy High School Broncos
dominated the Eisenhower
High School Cardinals, 25-8
in front of a packed house on
Saturday night at Gately Stadium.
“We just wanted to stay aggressive,” said Jack Ramsey,
head football coach at Kenwood. “I love the attitude of
our team. I told them they
just have to continue to grind,
play with high energy, put
points on the board and keep
flying after the ball.”
In the first half, both teams
would go scoreless in the first
19 minutes of the game, but
thanks to the Broncos defense, linebacker Leonardi
Muhammad would force a 6yard fumble recovery, giving
the Broncos the ball in the
red zone with 5:05 left to
play in the half.
On the ensuing possession,
the Broncos would score
their first points of the game.
Coming on a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Jalen Snyder to running back
B.J. McCaskill, giving them
their first lead at 6-0.
After scoring their first
points of the game, the Broncos defense would force a 3

ball back with 30.6 seconds
left in the half. And with the
defense pitching a shutout to
end the quarter, Snyder
would make two remarkable
throws. First, a 39-yard bomb
to wide receiver Angelo

touchdown, giving the Broncos a 12-0 lead to end the
half.
“We saw that they were in
man coverage,” Ramsey said
on the last touchdown play to
end the half. “We had good
[wide] receivers, so what I
did was run an empty motion
play in the backfield, saw the
safety down the Cardinals defensive player and it led to
one-on-one coverage with the
corners and a fade route
touchdown play to Angelo.”
In the second half, the
Broncos offense would add
13 more points on the scoreboard. Turning the game over
late to the Broncos defense,
while finishing the Cardinals
off with one punishing hit
after another, putting their
mark on the game for good.
With the win, the Broncos
improve to 1-0 on the season.

Acting classes at Hyde Park Neighborhood Club

Acting classes are held every Saturday at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, 5480 S. Kenwood Ave., from 10 a.m. until 11
a.m.
Classes are taught by Jossie Harris Thacker, a dancer and actress who has been featured in shows such as “In Living Color,”
“Empire” and “NCIS.”
The class titled “Who Are You” exposes kids to performing acting scenes, sharing thoughts and experiences with each other
and learning about the difference between theater and film.

s summer winds down it’s time to look
ahead to the fall season. Chicago has
one of the most vibrant classical music
and opera scenes in the country, so this preview can only touch on a sample of what’s
available in the coming months. This preview
will start with Hyde Park, then consider the
greater South Side and finally look at some
major events throughout Chicago.
University of Chicago Presents has been the
leading provider of classical music in Hyde
Park for decades, offering a range of concerts
at multiple venues. The Classic Concert Series
kicks off on Fri., Oct. 28 at Mandel Hall with
the Danish String Quartet playing
Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 15 as well as
Schubert’s String Quintet in D Major, where
they are joined by cellist Torlief Thedeen. Violinist Isabelle Faust and pianist Alexander
Melnikov offer an all Beethoven program on
Fri., Nov. 11.
The Howard Mayer Brown International
Early Music Series opens on Fri., Oct., 14
with the Baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire directed by Jeannette Sorrell. The Contempo series opens on Fri., Dec. 2 at the Logan Center
with the International Contemporary Ensemble. They will perform music of Mauricio
Kagel, Peter Maxwell Davies, Karlheinz
Stockhausen, and John Cage.

The Chicago Ensemble begins its 40th sea-
son in Hyde Park on Sun., Nov., 13 at 3 p.m.

The Newberry Consort begins its 30th season with an event commemorating the 400th
anniversary of the death of Shakespeare. Entitled “Kemp’s Jig,” it stars guest artist Steve
Player, an English actor and dancer famous for
his portrayals of Will Kemp, Shakespeare’s favorite actor. The performance will recreate an
Elizabethan street performance, then known
as a jig, with period singing, dancing, and an
authentic violin band on Oct., 22 at 8 p.m. in

a free recital series — The MTHP Artist Series

Crossed that Line to Freedom,” with music
and libretto by Nkeiru Okoye, comes to
Chicago after its world premiere in New York
City in 2014. The South Shore Opera Company of Chicago (SSOCC) will offer a single
performance on Sun., Oct. 30 at the South
Shore Cultural Center (7059 South Shore Dr.).
The two-act opera illuminates the courage,
love, and strength of a great American heroine in the face of brutal slavery. The leading
singers include Joelle Lamarre, Dana Campbell, Henry H. Pleas III, and Cornelius Johnson. Leslie B. Dunner, who conducted the
world premiere, will lead a chamber ensemble in a newly expanded orchestration by the
composer. Goodman Theatre’s resident director Chuck Smith will direct. Tickets are $75
or $250. The former includes a reception before the performance and the latter includes
the reception as well as dinner and entertainment after the performance. The reception begins at 4 p.m., the opera starts at 5 p.m. and
the dinner commences at 7 p.m.
On Fri., Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Logan Center, the SSOCC will present “South Shore
Opera’s Harriet Tubman Project,” a preview
and discussion of the opera. It will include
music from the opera as well as a conversation with the composer and members of the

Beth Harris named interim director at Lab School

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (Lab School) will be
starting the 2016-17 school year on
Tuesday, Sept. 6, with a new Interim Director, Beth Harris.
After Robin Appleby resigned
from the role in May after two years
in the position, Harris was chosen
as the interim director only days
after Appleby’s unexpected announcement.
Harris took over the role on July 1
and has an extensive background at
the University of Chicago (U. of
C.). She has worked at U. of C. for
30 years, with 13 of those years in
the roles of the university’s Vice
President and as the General Counsel.
She served on the Lab School’s
Board of Directors from 2002
through 2015 and was involved with
the decision to expand the school
and the current renovation of the
campus. Her three children have
also attended the school.
Outside of the university and the
Lab School, Harris served on the
board of the National Association of
College and University Attorneys
and was the former president of the
Hyde Park School of Dance.
Harris will serve as the interim di-
rector while the Lab School
searches for a permanent replacement for Appleby. According to a
letter to the Lab School community
from U. of C. Executive Vice President, David Fithian, and Chairman
of Laboratory Schools Board of Directors, David Kistenbroker, a
search advisory committee is currently being put together to find a
replacement.
The committee will include board
members, teachers, parents and staff
and will work alongside a search
firm in the interview and hiring
process.
Fithian and Kistenbroker said in
the letter that a permanent successor is expected to be hired by next
summer.

NKO Conservation Council to discuss Binny’s expansion

The North Kenwood Oakland Conservation
Council will discuss Binny’s Beverage
Depot’s plans to move from its current loca-
tion into the Lake Park Point Shopping Center, 1314 E. 47th St.
Binny’s, which is currently leasing 3,500
square feet of space in the Hyde Park Bank
Building, 1531 E. 53rd St., is looking to lease
11,000 square feet in the Lake Park Point
Shopping Center.
The extra space will allow the store to provide the same range of products that are offered at its other locations.
The store will be presented at the council’s
Sept. 1 meeting, which will take place at Ken-
nicott Park, 4434 S. Lake Park Ave. at 6:30
p.m.

U. of C. professor organizes new citywide music festival

A University of Chicago professor, Augusta
Read Thomas, has been organizing a new contemporary music festival across Chicago: the
Ear Taxi Festival (ETF). The musical lineup
was announced mid-August, and will include
a performance at Rockefeller Chapel by the
university’s carillon player.
Thomas is the Professor of Composition in
Music at the U. of C. and for the past three
years has had a central role in organizing ETF.
“Giving back to the profession and supporting the work of my colleagues is a privilege
and responsibility I take extremely seriously,”
Thomas said. “I deeply love contemporary
classical art music and want to support
it. Leading ETF has been a massive effort in
public spirit and in supporting colleagues and
their work.”
A Chicago-centric concert series, ETF will
be comprised of 30-90 minute sets in multiple Chicago venues Oct. 5-10, including Harris Theater and the Chicago Cultural Center.
“It is my hope that Ear Taxi Festival’s showcase of Chicago’s inventive and original composers, musicians and creators of
contemporary classical music will focus interest in and support of the diversity and richness of our city’s creative, musical minds and
inspire us as we all discover new ways to appreciate this ever-expanding art form,”
Thomas said.
University carillon player Joey Brink will
perform on Oct. 6 in Rockefeller Chapel,
5850 S. Woodlawn Ave. He will play the
world premiere of pieces by Iddo Aharony,
Tomás Gueglio Saccone, and his own piece
“Letters From the Sky.”
“My piece is based on the idea that when
you’re walking around campus, you hear
music coming from the tower,” Brink said.
“But when it’s out of view, the sound can
bounce off walls around you and it almost
seems like the sky is creating music.”
Brink has been preparing for ETF for almost
a year, and is releasing his first CD at the fes-
