You can also use briquettes. This appliance may not under any circumstances be used as an incinerator! It can also occasionally burn coal (anthracite or lean coal) of 12/22 or 20/30 grade. It is prohibited, however, to burn coke or other fuels containing sulphur. 2. First fire: Bakes the paint, which causes a release of fumes and odours. Ventilate the room! Do not touch the paint until the fireplace has cooled down, as initially it softens before hardening for good. 3. With each fire: - Close the door of the ash box - Position the grill properly depending on the fuel - Turn on the fan (except for minimum rate) 4 Opti- 1. Use: 1.1. Description of elements 12 11 10 9 6 8 1 7 5 3 4 2 1. The gate: Never leave it open when the appliance is in operation 7. Microswitch: A switch that automatically stops the fan on opening the door. 2. The thermostat: It regulates the quantity of primary air for combustion according to its position. Its valve closes and opens according to the temperature of the combustion chamber. Its control knob is telescopic to facilitate operation. 8. Fireplace identification label 3. The ashtray door: It gives access to the ashtray and to the deashing arm. It must always be closed during a fire (otherwise the combustion air is no longer under control and the fire flares up -> overheating of appliance). 4. The deashing arm :To use it, pull it towards you. It is used to adapt the fireplace to the type of fuel (left-hand position: open grill for coal; right-hand position: closed grill for wood). Deashing is done by moving it from right to left. 5. The ashtray: In the form of a shovel to enable collection of ashes right at the bottom of the appliance. Monitor the amount of ash in the ashtray and empty it before it overflows. 6. Door lock and removable handle: With the gate closed, place the removable handle in the hole in the door latch to open and close. 9. Log-guard: For safety. 10. Refractory bricks or cast iron plates: a natural material that protects the heating unit whilst limiting variations in temperature. 11. Baffles: Made of heat-resisting stainless steel, they lengthen the path of fumes optimising secondary combustion and increasing heat transfer. They enable the fireplace to be adapted to the draught of the chimney. 12. Inner door: These are hardwearing stainless steel seals, to guarantee air tightness of the door and trouble-free clearing of smoke from the glass. 13. Distributors: They enable regular distribution of primary air. 14. Grills: They are made of heat-resisting cast iron, and the upper grill is operated by the deashing arm. Optifire 5 15. The variator: It enables adjustment of fan speed. 1. Speed adjustment. 2. Minimum speed adjustment screw under the knob 3. Fuse (Remove the knob, unscrew the plate, remove old fuse, replace with identical fuse). 1 2 3 Do not forget to calibrate the variator; refer to the installation manual in options 6. 1.2. Opening – closing the door During the fire, open the door slowly. Opening it suddenly causes a temporary backdraft in the fireplace. To close the door: lift the handle, press the door against the heating unit so that the seal is gently compressed, then lower the handle until it is locked. It is normal for the fan to cut out when opening the door. 1.3. Fire behaviour The quality and the drying of the wood are of prime importance for the fireplace to operate at its best (heater power and yield, cleanliness of glass). Quality wood is: - Dry wood that has been drying for at least 2 years in a ventilated sheltered area. - Use logs from broad-leaved trees in preference to those from conifers, which tend to burn quickly and produce lots of soot. In order of preference: hornbeam, oak, beech... - It is also possible to use logs of compressed wood shavings and briquettes. An excessive load of wood leads to: - A reduction in yield and an increase in wood consumption. - A significant loss of heat through the chimney. - Premature ageing of the fireplace and chimney flue. 6 Opti- OK! 1.3.1. Lighting 1. OPEN the air control to maximum: Thermostat 9. Place the grill in open position (lever to the left). 2. Lay firelighter or crumpled-up newspaper. Finish off with kindling. The use of inflammable liquids is prohibited. 3. Set light to it. 4. To avoid condensation of fumes on the glass and to facilitate starting the fire: Leave the door slightly ajar to prevent the glass sooting up, as its still too low temperature causes condensation and deposit of particles. 5. Wait for the kindling to be well lit before LAYING the first logs, choosing the smallest ones first. 6. As soon as there are strong flames and the glass is sufficiently warm, close the door completely. 7. When the fire is blazing, close the grill and the ashtray and start the fan (Variator "ON" see 1.6). 8. When the appliance is hot, adjust the thermostat to the required position. 9. Adapt the fan speed to the quantity of hot air you need. 1.3.2. Ideal rate for good yield 1. Choose split logs (1or 2 depending on the quantity of heat needed) 2. Try to pile them in staggered rows to encourage gas exchanges. 3. Put the thermostat on 7-8. 4. Put the fan on maximum. A sign of good combustion with wood, after a phase of degassing where the fireplace interior turns black, during the actual combustion, this black tar must be burned and the fireplace interior must appear clear, then blacken again with the following load and then be reburned once again. For better yield, it is best to have the thermostat on 7-8 and load log-by-log depending on the quantity of heat you need. This also enables you to keep the glass, bricks and chimney cleaner. Also ensure that you close the baffles as far as possible and ideally put in place the third baffle if your chimney allows it (see 1.5 Adjusting baffles). Maximum permitted load at maximum rate: Model Maximum load (for reduced rate): Recommended load for 1 hour at maximum rate: OPTI700 9Kg OPTI760 11Kg OPTI760DF 11Kg 3,5Kg 4,5Kg 3,68Kg Optifire 7 1.3.3. Reduced rate and long-lasting combustion Maximum permitted load in one go at reduced rate (see previous table). 1. Keep a 3 to 5 cm bed of embers at the bottom of the fireplace. 2. Choose logs with a very wide section. 3. Position the thermostat according to the draught of your chimney. A reduced rate is generally achieved between 0 and 3. This kind of load can only be used at reduced rate, to produce a long-lasting fire. Piling logs in parallel encourages a long-lasting fire. Add more logs when there are only embers left, just after the last flames die out. Continuous use at reduced rate may, through condensation, cause an accumulation of soot in the chimney, and thereby a risk of chimney fire, and dirty the glass more quickly. Avoid reduced rate during unfavourable atmospheric conditions (low pressure and high humidity), as there is a risk of backdraft. 1.4. OPERATING WITH COAL Use coal only in an casual way. Use coal (anthracite or lean coal) of 12/22 or 20/30 grade. Fuels containing sulphur, like coke and its by-products for example, are prohibited. NB. Do not use the appliance with coal in mild weather. As the draught and rate are reduced, combustion is liable to become incomplete. 1. Position the GRILL in OPEN position. 2. OPEN the air control to maximum: THERMOSTAT 9. 3. Lay crumpled (non-glazed) paper and KINDLING in the fireplace. 4. SET LIGHT TO IT. 5. Leave the door slightly AJAR to prevent the glass sooting up, as its still too low temperature causes condensation and deposit of particles. 6. As soon as the GLASS is sufficiently HOT, CLOSE THE DOOR. 7. START the FAN in MEDIUM POSITION (see 1.6). 8. Put the coal WITHOUT SPREADING IT OUT on the grill. 9. When the fire has penetrated the mass (appearance of flames), add a SECOND LOAD. 10. Allow the fire to continue to progress before reducing GRADUALLY the air intake up to the position corresponding to the calorific requirement. 11. ADJUSTING FAN SPEED. 8 Opti- CAUTION! When the fireplace is being used, and even if there are no more flames, certain accessible parts of the appliance are at very high temperatures. Do not leave children unsupervised near the fireplace. ! 1.6. Fans and speed variator Caution ! The fan is engaged when the temperature switch is hot (+ 20 min.) MAX. OFF= O MINI. ON 60 15 45 OFF= O O 30 Optifire 9 1.5. Adjusting baffles: Most open position: the fireplace is delivered with this configuration. It allows easy passage of fumes. Caution: lower baffle perforations on left. Intermediate position: if no backdraft is observed on opening, it is possible to close the baffles slightly to increase yield. Caution: lower baffle perforations on right, turn baffle round. Most closed position: if there is still no backdraft in intermediate position, close it fully to always have the best yield the fireplace can give in relation to the chimney. Third baffle: if there is still no backdraft in closed position, you can install the third baffle. Again with the aim of obtaining the best yield the fireplace can give in relation to the chimney. Prohibited position: 10 Opti- Except: OPTI 760 D Most open position: the fireplace is delivered with this configuration. It allows easy passage of fumes. Intermediate position: if no backdraft is observed on opening, it is possible to close the baffles slightly to increase yield. Most closed position: if there is still no backdraft in intermediate position, close it fully to always have the best yield the fireplace can give in relation to the chimney. Optifire 11 2. Maintenance: 2.1. Everyday maintenance GLASS To clean the glass, open the door using the following procedure: CAUTION! - Do not clean the glass when it is hot. - Spray the product* on the centre of the glass, then spread it using a cloth or absorbent paper. - Do not use water and/or cleaning products on the painted areas. - For stubborn marks, it is possible to use a blade for scraping ceramic hobs. - Cleaning the glass is easier if done regularly. *We recommend use of the cleaning product “BG Clean”, available from your dealer. “BG Clean” does not contain caustic soda and is biodegradable. AIR DISTRIBUTORS Where necessary, unblock the air inlet holes of the front distributor with a vacuum cleaner, as well as those situated on both sides of the grill, which can easily be removed to facilitate the operation. GRILLS Make sure that there are no obstacles restricting their movement. DUST FILTERS (if there are any, they are level with the air inlets) Clean them with a vacuum cleaner and, where necessary, with water. New filters can be obtained form your supplier. THERMOSTAT Check that it turns properly. Your supplier is authorised to check the setting. DOOR Check that the stainless steel seal is airtight. If necessary, your supplier can adjust and/or replace it. Check that both the lock and the opening safety work properly. This is in order to ensure good yield and clean glass. ASHTRAY DOOR Check the condition of the seal and if necessary replace it to ensure air tightness. Degradation of this seal leads to poor fire control and reduction in yield. Check the operation of the spring clips. 12 Opti- 2.2. Annual servicing CHIMNEY-SWEEPING Have the chimney swept at least once a year, not only to comply with the law, but also for safety reasons. - Take note of the position of the 2 baffles. - Remove the baffles, as shown in the drawing. - If the third baffle is installed, you must first take down the 2 large baffles, unscrew the third baffle and remove it, then manoeuvre and remove the two large baffles. - Place the grill in closed position (wood). - Close the door, thermostat and ashtray door. - Simply clean up any fallen dust with a vacuum cleaner. Take advantage of the chimney-sweeping to check the chimney and connections. condition of the - Reposition the baffles following the instructions in reverse, taking care to position them as before. LUBRICATION With frequent use, it is recommended that the following parts be lubricated annually: - Door and gate: hinges and lock. - Thermostat: control shaft. DO NOT USE NORMAL LUBRICANT. At high temperatures the latter will dry out and cause seizing up. If necessary, clean the surfaces thoroughly, then apply a LUBRICANT RESISTANT TO HIGH TEMPERATURES, available from your dealer. PAINTING METAL PARTS Do not use water and/or cleaning products on the painted areas. Stained areas may be restored using special B&G high temperature aerosol paint, which is available from your dealer. FAN (as option) UNPLUG the electricity supply, DISCONNECT the fan, and then REMOVE it. CLEAN the impeller blades using a brush (COMPRESSED AIR IS PROHIBITED). REASSEMBLE everything. FIREPROOF BRICKS A split brick can still play a protective role. However, a missing piece must be replaced in order to maintain effective protection of the heating unit. Bricks are wearing parts that can be easily replaced individually. You are advised to change parts that are too damaged. Optifire 13 3. Faults FAULTS SOLUTIONS GLASS GETS DIRTY TOO QUICKLY -Check that the fuel is not damp. - Use the thermostat on 7-8. - Check the position of the air detector. - Open the baffle passage. FAN Not working any more - Check if the motor is working. - Check the micro switch. - Check (and replace) the variator fuse. - Check the temperature switch (option). - Check (and restore) the power supply. FAN Operates but the output is weak - Check that the wires of the speed variator are properly positioned. - Clean or replace the filters. - Clean the impeller blades. DRAUGHT Too strong Tighten the baffle passage (see “Adjusting baffles”) - Contact your supplier. DRAUGHT Too weak, possibly with fumes leaking into the room - Check the chimney (see installation instructions). - Remove any obstructions. - Open the baffle passage. - Check if there is any improvement when the window is open. - Have the chimney swept. Disruptions connected with weather conditions - If this condition is permanent, consult your supplier. THE FIRE LACKS INTENSITY - Check that the fuel is not damp. - Check the thermostat (put it on 7-8 and check its movement). - Empty the ashtray. - Unblock the distributor holes. THERMOSTAT NO LONGER CLOSES: - A foreign body is preventing the valve from closing - Mechanical blockage - Remove the foreign body. - Replace the thermostat. THERMOSTAT STAYS SHUT: 1. On COLD, the valve only raises from medium positions 2. On COLD, the valve does not raise any more 1) Recalibrate the setting. 2) Replace the thermostat (it has been damaged following major overheating of the fireplace). UNCONTROLLABLE FIRE: - DOOR of ashtray open or not airtight - DOOR of fireplace not airtight - THERMOSTAT does not shut - Check the ashtray door closes properly. - Check the seal, and replace it where necessary. - Readjust the door seal setting. - Readjust the position of the lock roller. - Check operation of the thermostat. In the event of a CHIMNEY FIRE, close immediately the door and the ashtray door, turn off the thermostat. 14 Opti- 4. Flue RECOMMENDATIONS The flue must be built according to good practice, the most important elements of which are as follows: - Minimum height (distance between connection and top of chimney stack) will be 4 m. - Section: chimney: Ø 200 air outlet: Ø125 - The flue must be heat insulated. - The chimney outlet (stack) and its location are very important; it is absolutely necessary that the outlet has a cowl to prevent rain reaching the fireplace. Ask advice from a chimney maker (any device contracting the section of the outlet must be avoided). The chimney outlet must be located away from areas affected by wind. Min 0,4 m - The presence of obstacles near the chimney outlet must be taken into account. -An individual flue does not have more than 2 catings (i.e. changes in direction). The angle of these cantings with the vertical generally speaking should not exceed 20°, or 45° for a smooth metal flue. 45° 20°- 45° OK! OK! - The flue must allow recovery of soot (sweepable). - Only connect one appliance per flue. FOR AN EXISTING FLUE: It is essential to check, in addition to air tightness, emptiness and overall stability, the compatibility of the fireplace and if necessary, line the flue, or even modify the chimneystack. Optifire 32 Airtight connection - In case of a double flue: - choose the best, - seal the unused one. Max 45° “Breeching” to prevent soot build-up Soot trap - In case of a side connection on an existing flue, carry out one of the following two assemblies: - It is essential that the connection is airtight. 3. Combustion air and outside air supply When a fireplace burns wood, it consumes air, which means that a certain quantity of air exits by the chimney D. This air must be compensated for by the normal inlets, A and B, and if the latter are insufficient, a new clean air inlet C must be added. The presence of a ventilator hood in the same living space creates an additional air outlet D’, which must also be compensated for. Indicative value of C in accordance with the diameter of the chimney and the air tightness of the house: You must provide a fresh air inlet of 30 cm²/KW, i.e. 150 cm2. A D D' B D - Preferably, this inlet will be near the fireplace. This is in order to avoid currents of cold air across the room, a vacuum in the premises and to help let fresh air in. 4. Convection air (hot air) Hot air produced by the fireplace leaves directly by the space above the door. However, it is possible to connect, in addition, 4 hot air pipes on the top of the fireplace. This allows even more heat to be extracted and/or the heat to be sent to a different room from the one where the fireplace is situated. The contribution of these outlets remains restricted to +/- 1 KW per outlet. Heat-insulated pipes are recommended for the appliance to work at its best (they create a «draught» for convection air). When installing these pipes, limit the length and changes in direction, bend at an angle at the widest change in direction and avoid the use of outlet grills with a low permeability coefficient, as the resulting losses in speed reduce the effectiveness of hot air outlets. 33 Optifire - If hot air is sent to another room, it is essential to fit an air return port with section at least equivalent to the hot air outlets. This is very important so as not to create a vacuum in the room, which would cause the fireplace to malfunction. - Convection air circuits must also be taken into account (see the convection diagrams below). OK! OK! 5. Installation 5.1. RECOMMENDATIONS - The chimney must be suitable. - To avoid losses of heat in the pipes, it is recommended that they be insulated. - The fireplace must be level. - Check that the door works properly (side opening). - After connection to the chimney, we advise you to light a fire. - It is possible not to insulate the fireplace at all. In this case, it is essential that air can circulate around the fireplace. To do this, an air stream of at least 5 cm must be provided right around the fire, which allows at the same time for heat to be recovered. The decorative chimney must then allow clean air to enter at the bottom and leave at the top. (See drawing in 5.2.) However if the fireplace is against one of the outside walls of the house, it is preferable to insulate it from this wall. - COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS: they are to be prohibited in the immediate surroundings of the fireplace, hot air outlets and the chimney flue. A safe distance on the floor of 80 cm is required. Please note that when opening the door, burning embers can be projected several metres. - INSULATING MATERIALS: use «HIGH TEMPERATURE» materials like certain rock wools. In all cases, these materials must not be in contact with convection air (DO NOT USE GLASS WOOL). Optifire 34 5.2. Alcove B Y Y - Clear the way for connection to the chimney and, if necessary, the hot air pipes. - Remove any hoods and dampers. - Insulate the outside walls. - In the case of new building work, it is PROHIBITED to rest the building work on top of the fireplace. A --> B: System for decompressing and cooling the fireplace and chimney mantle. Recovery of additional heat. Z A Z --> Y and W: Natural or forced convection (with fan as option): Fireplace double wall recovery system. 5.3. Electricity - Bring the flexible power cable to face the port fitted in the appliance. Make sure there is enough length for the connection and for any subsequent simple maintenance. All installation and maintenance operations on the fan and the variator must be done with the power supply disconnected. 5.4. Putting the fireplace in place 1. Dismantle the removable parts. - the door (open more than 45°and lift) - the baffle (see dismantling a baffle) - the refractory bricks kit and grills 2. Introduce and position the fireplace in the alcove. - Clear the holes used for the convection circuit. - Determine the height (telescopic feet (except OPTI760 DF). CAUTION! Comply with the MINIMUM SECTION FOR CONVECTION AIR INDUCTION, i.e. 400cm² free passage, so take into account the passage coefficient of grills and filter if there are any. - Plan sufficient space for the fan if necessary. The fan can be mounted from inside the fireplace or from under the fireplace. - Heat insulate the outside adjoining wall and inflammable materials. - Put the appliance in place, upright and level (left/right and front/back). 35 Optifire - It is vital that the feet are pinned down. To do this, drill a 5.25 diameter hole with the bit provided and insert the M6 SELF-CUTTING screws (except OPTI760 DF). - Plan for passage of the motor electrical power cable when doing building work. - Connect the hot air collars if necessary. - Through the inside of the fireplace, look for the collar and pull it until it jams. Then pull down the bottom retainers. - Assembling the brickwork: firstly: the back – secondly: the sides. BRICKS REFERENES REFERENCE BRIQUES CAST IRON REFERENCES DIMENSIONS (mm) DIMENSIONS (mm) - Place the baffles in the most closed position but without backdraft to obtain the best yield from the fireplace. (See chapter 1.5. Adjusting baffles). - You are advised to do a test run before doing building work around the appliance. - Put the covering on the appliance (when designing the covering, do not forget to allow MINIMUM SECTIONS for passages of the CONVECTION CIRCUIT). - Place the covering frame. Simply slide the frame between the covering and the springs. - Dust the visible painted surfaces. - Make a first fire to bake the paint (ventilate the room and do not touch the fireplace). CHECK THE DRAUGHT. - If you need to alter the position of the baffles, note the ideal position of baffles for your chimney at the place given on the first page of these instructions. This will enable you to reposition them properly after chimney-sweeping. Note: Possibility of using the hooks for fastening the fireplace to its pallet to fasten the fireplace to the wall. 5.5. Frames Place the frame: 1. Open and unhinge the door. 2. Insert the frame in the cabinet. 3. Ideally, in terms of depth, the frame should be flush with the door. 4. Hang the door back on and close it. Optifire 36 6. Options 6.1. Fan, speed variator, door switch and temperature switch The fan enables you to pump air between the heating unit and the cabinet to recover maximum heat and thereby increase the yield and power of the appliance. The speed variator enables you to vary, according to requirements, the output of the fan. The door switch breaks contact when you open the door to prevent any backdraft of smoke and puffs of hot air during reloading of the fireplace in operation. Positioning the fan from below: Insert the fan (condenser, white cylinder, towards you) through the lower hole so that the platform rests on the bottom of the cabinet. Position the fan using silent blocs in the five housings provided. Be careful of the electrical cable. Positioning the fan from inside: You are advised to remove the finish frame and the door. The fan is inserted from inside; you must remove the pair of grills, the two stainless steel cases located in front of the grills, the bricks behind and at the side, and the grill support. Unscrew the ash box using the Allen key. The ash box is removed through the ashtray door after removing the ashtray. Make the electric connection. You must pass the fan connector through the orifice provided on the left of the ash box, position the switch support on the fireplace and screw it down. Connect the fan. Insert it in the fireplace (Pay attention to the fan’s assembly direction! Blower directed backwards). Check carefully the passage of the cable and connect the variator to the left of the fireplace. To finish, reassemble the fireplace. X Temperature switch The temperature switch automatically engages the fan when the appliance is hot and disengages it when it has cooled down. When switching on, a wait of about 15 minutes before it engages is normal. 37 Optifire OK ! 6.1. N°10 220V 220V IMPORTANT: Adjustment (calibration) of the speed variator: Once installation of the fan and the different components has been fully completed: - Turn on power. - Put the fan on minimum = knob turned fully in a clockwise direction. - Pull the knob (1) out. - Using a screwdriver, turn the adjustment screw (2) until the fan is operating silently; this determines the minimum output that you want on your fan. CAUTION: Always check carefully that the fan is always turning at least a little bit, even at reduced speed. Try several on/offs of the fan down to minimum to ensure that everything is operating smoothly. If the fan has stopped in minimum position, the fan motor will be damaged! 1. Speed adjustment knob. 1. 2. Minimum speed adjustment screw under the knob (calibration required). 2. 3. 1.25A fuse (Remove the knob, unscrew the plate, pull out and replace). 3. MAX. OFF= O MINI. For the power cable and position of the variator, simply measure the space required by the variator, cut the cable as required (unplugged!) and connect the variator to it as indicated in the diagram supplied with the variator. Optifire 38 6.2. Pivoting valve kit This kit enables you to seal, if required, the hot air stream above the door, sending more or less hot air to the hot air outlets if the latter are connected! 39 Optifire Bodart & Gonay SA - Parc Artisanal de Harzé - Rue de Lambinon, 3 - B-4920 HARZE tel: 32 (0)4 239 93 93 - fax: 32 (0)4 239 93 98 info@b-g.be - www.b-g.be
