2011-2012 Annual Report - Sarah Reed Children`s Center
2011-2012 Annual Report Message to the Stakeholders From time to time in an organization’s history there are certain periods of time and events which significantly define and shape the future. Without a doubt, the activities of this past year will be viewed as defining moments in the history of Sarah Reed Children’s Center. This past year saw the conclusion of the most successful and ambitious charitable fundraising event in the history of the organization. Contributions which were received established new levels of philanthropy that we only dreamed might be possible. As a result of this philanthropy, construction began on a massive $3.2 million facilities upgrade and renovation project at our residential campus. When complete we will have a new twelve bed residence hall, a central kitchen and cafeteria, more family meeting rooms, expanded activity areas and classroom space and a new administrative wing. This past year also saw the acquisition of the former Hamilton School and playing field from the Erie School District. When renovations are complete, the total cost of this project will also slightly exceed $3 million dollars and will dramatically improve our partial hospitalization services that we currently provide. MISSION The mission of the Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center is to promote the emotional well-being of children and families, helping them to realize their potential and experience success. The Seven Commitments of Sanctuary® Two important themes for both of these major capital projects are, we are undertaking both with a financial strategy that utilizes existing resources, contributed funds and minimal debt and each project is aimed at further improving the already high quality of our services. Finally, building on the strengths and accomplishments of the Agency’s last Strategic Plan, I am pleased to announce that the Board of Directors just adopted our new strategic road map for the next five year period. That document identifies strategies related to dramatically improving marketing and public relation efforts, human capital management, continuum of care and evidence based practices, therapeutic outcomes and new and expanded strategic partnerships. Additionally, the financial strength that we operate from today and our new levels of philanthropic support will also be enhanced. We are excited about our recent accomplishments and optimistic about moving forward with this new plan and most importantly fully realize how fortunate we are to have an outstanding professional staff and a highly committed Board of Directors to help with the journey which lies ahead. Emotional Intelligence On their behalf, I wish to thank our many partners and generous donors for their continued support so together we can realize our vision of changing lives. Social Learning Sincerely, Nonviolence Shared Governance James D. Mando President/CEO Open Communication Social Responsibility Growth and Change 1 2 The Woman, Organization and Community with a Big Heart Community Support Happy Holidays It is difficult to believe that there are many children who come to the Children’s Center have never received a gift during the holidays. However, because of the generosity and support of many in our community, every child at Sarah Reed had at least one holiday wish granted. The women of Elks Lodge #67 (pictured) have fulfilled the wishes and dreams for hundreds of our children over the years. Contracts for construction of the new residence hall and campus renovations were awarded in July. Work on the year long project began in August with project completion scheduled for the summer of 2013. • In June, the Children’s Center was notified that they were the successful bidder for the Hamilton School property from the Erie School District. After renovations are completed, the building and property will be home to both of the Children’s Center’ partial hospitalization programs. • The Children’s Center continued with it’s tradition of excellence by achieving accreditation from the Joint Commission of Healthcare organization for its 16th consecutive year. • The Center, partnered with the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and Presque Isle State Park, completed a third year of PNC’s “Grow up Great with Science” program. The program provided interactive learning to under privileged pre-school children and their families. • Broad community support and involvement continued to make the Children’s Center’s Souper Bowl, Trail of Treats, Christmas Brunch and Santa Pub Crawl hugely successful. Collaboration with B&L Wholesale, the Rockhouse Arts Foundation and Elks Lodge #67 staged events that provided invaluable programs and opportunities for children enrolled at the Children’s Center. • Through a collaborative effort with UPMC/Hamot, the Children’s Center hope to open a school based health clinic in 2013 at the Hamilton School property. 8 Finance Agency Revenue by Year FY 2012 Leadership BOARD OF DIRECTORS BRADLEY N.
