FA girls seek to keep Central streak alive

Last year, the Franklin Academy girls
varsity softball team faced seven Northern Athletic Conference Central Division
opponents twice, and the Huskies won all
14 games to extend their regular-season
winning streak to 28.
Keeping their regular-season mark unblemished this season will be a bit more of
a challenge as the lady Huskies lost seven
starters – Brooke Collins, Morgan Fountain, Janelle Heden, Katie Lamica, Whitney Legacy, Emily Marshall and veteran
hurler Annie Sharlow – to graduation.
Fountain is playing college ball at North
Country Community College, while
Lamica and Sharlow are performing at
SUNY Canton and Marshall is following
in her two older sister’s footsteps at SUNY
Plattsburgh.
The FA squad does return three veterans for the 2015 season and boasts two of
the more formidable hurlers in the NAC in
the form of seniors Alissa McCauley and
Alexa Prue. The third member returning
to help the FA team vie for Central Division and Class A titles is senior Erin McDonald.
The remainder of the squad will be
made up of one senior, three juniors and
five sophomores, which gives coach Greg
Marshall a solid core for the future. Firstyear player Taylor Poirier is the fourth
senior on the team this spring, while the
juniors and sophomores move up to the
varsity ranks from a very successful JV
program. Juniors getting their first shot
at the varsity level are the Collins twins,
Abigail and Gabrielle, along with Brooke
Monette, while Jessica Broeker, Claudia
Collins, Brenna Hudson, Brooke Reville
and Morgan Yando are the five sophomores who will get their first taste of varsity play.
“I feel that we are very strong in pitching with Alissa and Alexa and we have two
young catchers in Gabrielle and Jessica
to take over behind the plate in place of
Morgan (Fountain) and Janelle (Heden),”
explained Marshall. “All of the sophomores are good players up from a very
strong JV team.”
The FA coach believes that the team
will be strong again this year, but will
need the younger players to step up.
“The new players will have to step up,
but we have great senior leaders to help
guide them along,” pointed out Marshall.
“We’re going to have to sort out positions
and get in some outfield work – if we can
ever get outside.”
The lady Huskies, like most of the rest of
the Section 10 teams, have been stuck inside since practice began in mid-March.
Once the girls get outside, they will
have one maybe two practices, then jump
right into their Section 10 season. As of
press time, the season opener was postponed on April 10 with the new opener
taking place on April 14 – on the road in
Massena, which the FA girls won 7-2. The
Huskies followed that with a tight 4-3 win
against OFA in their home opener on Friday.
The Huskies and lady Raiders are well
familiar with each other, as these are the
two clubs that vie for the Section 10 Class
A crown at seasons end. FA has defeated
Massena the last four years and has represented Section 10 in state play in all four.
And the FA girls would like to continue
that trend.
“In our division, OFA, Gouverneur
and Massena look strong. And, of course,
Massena is the one we have to beat at the
end of the year for the A title,” said Marshall. “We have been 28-0 in the Central Division the over the past two years
and have won four straight Class A titles
against Massena. We hope to try and continue those accomplishments.”
Besides the Raiders, Blue Devils and
Wildcats, FA will also face the Canton
Golden Bears, Salmon River Shamrocks,
Potsdam Sandstoners and divisional
newcomer Tupper Lake Lumberjacks,
which will take the place of BrushtonMoira Panthers, who moved into the
Central Division a year ago. The Panthers are back in their familiar East Division with the Tupper Lake squad taking
its turn in the Central, which helps to
even out the numbers of regular season
games in the two divisions. Two years
ago, St. Lawrence Central participated in
the Central.

SRC softball team young, but improved

FORT COVINGTON – A good chunk of
last year’s Salmon River softball team is
gone. But that doesn’t mean that coach
Liz Durfee won’t have experienced players on the field for the Shamrocks’ 2015
spring campaign.
Returning to the SRC lineup will be the
lone senior on this year’s team, Kiera Jacobs. She will be re-joined by juniors Brittany Brooks, Kera Ghostlaw and Tsiiowisonte Laffin.
Also back to help the team improve on
its 2014 record of 4-12 will be sophomore
Jenny DeJung, who looks to get the starting job behind the plate, but has been
pushed by the presence of classmate Abbie Farley.
The catching duo will receive pitches
from either Brooks, who saw extensive
time in the circle a year ago, or freshman
newcomer Lauren Martin. Durfee has
tabbed Brooks and Martin as the primary
hurlers for the Shamrocks this season.
When not in the circle, the coach also
has Brooks and Martin, along with Ghostlaw, penciled in for a defensive spot in the
infield, along with newcomers Noreen
Bautista and/or Tekaritha George.
Jacobs, Laffin, Bautista, Farley, Alianna
Hart and newcomers Katrina Oakes and
Krista Walrath are all working extremely
hard to nail down a starting spot in the
outfield, but several of the seven could
find themselves anchoring a spot in the
infield as well, according to the coach.
“It is going to be a team effort to improve upon last season’s 4-12 overall
record,” Durfee said. “We are looking
to have more of an offensive push in the
Central (Division) to stay competitive
with these strong teams in the league.
“This is a great group of girls, on and off
the field, and I look forward to working
with them in all of their softball accomplishments this season,” summarized the
coach.
Even though the record was sub-par by
the coaches’ standards, the Salmon River
girls did win their first-round Class B playoff game, but eventually saw their 2014
season come to a close at the hands – and
bats – of the OFA Blue Devils.
Between the time that the coach sent
in her preview information and now, the
Shamrocks have opened up their 2015
spring season. They started the year off,
record wise, the way the coach had expected with a pair of wins, but, as Durfee
stated “have plenty of work to do to improve.”
The SRC girls outlasted the Potsdam
Sandstoners 16-11 in the home opener
and followed that with a 6-0 shutout victory against visiting Tupper Lake, a newcomer to the Central Division this season.

against Potsdam with Brooks spinning
the shutout against the Lumberjacks.
Along with Potsdam and Tupper Lake,
the Shamrocks will face traditional Central Division foes Franklin Academy,
Canton, OFA, Massena and Gouverneur,
which could be a sleeper team in the battle for the division’s top spot.

Girls lax team poised to make NAC noise

FORT COVINGTON – It is definitely going to be a different type of season for the
Salmon River girls varsity lacrosse team.
No longer will the lady Shamrocks be
in search of that elusive first win for the
program, which is in its fifth season. They
accomplished that milestone late in their
2014 campaign. The SRC girls also earned
their second career victory last year and
will open the 2015 season with fresh goals,
such as working toward at least a .500 record, or better. And the girls are already
off to a good start.
Since the boys and girls lacrosse teams
are among the first sports squads to actually get out and play games in Section 10’s
spring sports season, the lady Shamrocks
have already won their first three games of
the year. Salmon River soundly defeated
Heuvelton 18-4 in the season opener on
April 11 at SUNY Potsdam, jumping out to
a 6-0 lead and scoring 14 goals before the
end of the first half. A huge gain for a team
that struggled to put the ball in the net
during their first two campaigns. The lady
Shamrocks have followed the openinggame win with two more victories, a 20-0
thumping of the OFA Blue Devils in their
home opener – another program first –
and an 11-7, come-from-behind road win
over archrival Massena. SRC trailed the
host Red Raiders 4-2 at the half.
Along with the battles the SRC girls will
face against its league and nonleague opponents this spring, the girls, their coaches and families will also have a film crew
following their every move throughout
the season – on and off the field.
The filmmakers from the New Yorkbased Flatbush Pictures are shooting a
documentary about the Salmon River
girls varsity lacrosse team, the community-based K-12 Akwesasne Attack lacrosse
team and the Akwesasne Attack U19 travel team.
Despite the added distraction of the
film crew, second-year coach Terri
Swamp has her charges up and running
and ready to battle each and every opponent with the concept of “team” constantly on the players’ collective minds.
“We play as a team, score as a team,
play defense as a team and win and lose
as a team,” said Swamp, who has a solid
foundation to work with over the next
several season.
The SRC girls lacrosse team lost just
two players to graduation, midfielder
Jaiden Mitchell, who is attending Syracuse University, and Vanna Thompson,
who is playing lacrosse for SUNY Potsdam. Returning to the lineup for Swamp
are 11 veteran players and 18 rookies (see
roster below), ranging from eighth grade
to seniors in high school.
“The rookie players joining the team
this year will bring depth to all areas of the
team. The veteran players will continue
to demonstrate the growth the program
has shown over the past year,” explained
Swamp, who is a highly-regarded teacher
at the Salmon River Middle School.
Even with a 2-11 overall record from a
season ago, the program took one of its
biggest steps and barely missed out on its
historic first playoff win, falling just short
in the opening round of the Section 10
playoffs in overtime to Ogdensburg.
“Even though the record was 2-11, the
girls had a good season,” recalled Swamp,
who constantly reminds anyone within
earshot that it is a team concept that
drives the girls toward success for the program.
“The girls have been working hard preparing to be a competitive team to contend with in Section 10. The number of
players on this year’s team shows that the
program is growing,” continued Swamp.
“As a coach, the enthusiasm and passion
they bring to practice each day is rewarding.”
If the team continues to shine like it
did in its opener, the enthusiasm, passion
and rewards will continue to build the
program into a title contender in a very
short amount of time – making the winless campaigns seem like a bad dream.
Not a bad ending for a movie, either!

In the opener against rival Chateaugay, O’Connor tossed a no hitter,
then allowed just one base hit – a bloop
bunt that spun away from three BMC
defenders – against Colton-Pierrepont
and served up just two singles in the
romp over the M-W Yellowjackets.
Along with St. Lawrence, Chateaugay,
Madrid-Waddington and Colton-Pierrepont, the lady Panthers will battle
against St. Regis Falls, Parishville-Hopkinton and Norwood-Norfolk, plus play
a pair of nonleague games against the
Franklin Academy Huskies.

If the Brushton-Moira varsity softball
team is going to take its best shot at winning the Northern Athletic Conference
East Division and Section 10 Class C
championship, this is the season.
The 2015 version of BMC softball
returns its entire roster from last year
save one – exchange student Mika Uehara – as the team battled in the tough
Central Division a season ago. Now, the
Panthers are back in the familiar surroundings of the East Division and have
a legitimate chance at both postseason
crowns.
“We gained a whole lot of experience playing in the Central (Division)
last year against some very good competition,” said BMC coach Amie Chase.
“This year, we have everyone back from
a team that finished 12-4, and I am expecting my seven seniors to all have a
great season. If we play as we are capable of playing game-in and game-out,
this could very well be a banner season
for us.”
Back for their final campaign at
Brushton-Moira are the seven returning
seniors, who have played together for
the past three years, and are one of the
two favorites to win the East Division,
with defending champion St. Lawrence
Central the other projected preseason
favorite. Returning to the diamond will
be Jenna Dufrane, Kenzie Traynor, Arielle “AJ” Gary, Emily O’Connor, Sienna
Kenney and the DeBeer cousins, Ashley
and Paige.
O’Connor, a standout pitcher during the past couple of campaigns, will
determine just how far the team will go
this season.
“I am looking for Emily to have a big
season against the teams in the east.
She will be the driving force of our
team,” said Chase. “Jenna, AJ and Kenzie all had a really nice 2014 season, so I
hope it continues into 2015.”
The starting battery will consist of
O’Connor in the circle and Traynor behind the plate, although coach Chase
has noted that varsity newcomer Madison Rowe, a sophomore, is projected
to back up O’Connor in the circle and
could be the starting pitcher of the future.
Dufrane looks to anchor down first
base, while second-year varsity player, Ali
Hooker, has the early nod at second base.

Gary, who has sure hands, captains
the infield from shortstop, while returning junior Melissa Cox looks to solidify the infield at third.
The DeBeer girls make up two-thirds
of the outfield, with Ashley in center and
Paige in right. Three players, Kenney,
Rowe or sophomore Raegan St. Mary
will see time in left, while sophomores
Amanda Burnett, Brooke Robideau,
Heather Hayes and Kaylee Hutchins
have been practicing at multiple positions.
“I think we will be a competitive team
this season,” summarized Chase. “This
is a group of girls that have been playing
together for the past three seasons and,
for most of them, it is their final season. We should be strong both offensively and defensively and we should
have solid pitching again this season.
Those reasons should help us win a lot
of games.
The season has begun on a very positive note for the BMC girls, as the lady
Panthers have won their first three
games – easily.

BRUSHTON – For the first time in
many a season, the Brushton-Moira varsity baseball team will have a new coach
running the show. Departed is long-time
hardball mentor Missy Hastings-LaVigne
and entering is varsity baseball newcomer Jason LaFlesh. Hastings-LaVigne
guided the BMC boys to a 15-2 record in
2014 and a Section 10 Class C title. The
Panthers lost 5-0 to eventual state champ
Hoosic Valley in the state quarterfinals in
Amsterdam.
LaFlesh is not new to the coaching
ranks entirely, as he has been in charge
of the Franklin Academy modified hardballers for the past eight seasons. He has
also been the head man in the dugout
for the last seven seasons for the Malone
American Legion Post 219 travel summer
baseball program. The Post 219 squad has
had several members of the BMC Panthers, including departed 2014 graduates Zachary Burnett, Adam Martin and
Jacob St. Mary. Current BMC junior Alex
Burnett has also spent time on the legion
team with the new BMC boss.
The new coach will have a solid core
of returning players but, like a lot of high
school varsity programs, finds himself
short of established pitchers for the season. Graduation took its toll with the loss
of the three seniors, as all three spent time
on the hill. The lone hurler with the most
innings is Alex Burnett, who looks to be
the ace of the staff by committee.
Returning players Jon Kennedy, who
normally anchors first base, Ricky Collette, Austin Tavernia and Taylor “TT”
Tallman are all projected to see time on
the hill, both as starters and relievers.
“We have seven players throwing bullpen sessions at this point,” said LaFlesh.
“We have excellent team speed and the
returning players were valuable assets in
helping Brushton-Moira win a Section 10
(Class C) championship last season.”
Also back in the attempt to defend their
crown will be junior Bryan Aubrey, who
has also taken part in the bullpen sessions as both a pitcher and catcher, Cody
Jesmer, who may see extensive time at
shortstop and newcomers Roland Burke,
Nathaniel Coates, eighth-grader Joshua
Langdon and sophomores Chase Stonehouse and Kyle Wilcox. Stonehouse is
working on spelling Aubrey behind the
plate, while Wilcox appears to be the
front-runner for the starting job at second
base. The addition of Wilcox on the right
side of the infield, will allow LaFlesh to
move Tallman to the hot corner at third,
which was mostly occupied by Zach Burnett in 2014.

“We are a young team with hunger.
Most of the players know the thrill of victory with their Section 10 championship,
but also know the agony of defeat, which
happened in the state quarterfinals,” LaFlesh said. “As a team, we want to make improvements in all of the small areas of the
game that can lead to success. We can’t
replace the seniors from last year’s team,
but we can make them proud by having
a relentless work ethic, the desire to win
and be great student-athletes.
“We have set some goals for the season and look forward to trying to achieve
them,” summarized LaFlesh.
Brushton-Moira will face traditional
East Division rivals Chateaugay and St.
Regis Falls along with Norwood-Norfolk,

FA baseball team in rebuilding mode

Graduation hit the Franklin Academy baseball team hard. Gone are 11
– Tucker Bartenslager, Jon Brown, Abe
Gravell, Jake Henning, Alex Johnson,
Austin Lamay, Blayke Lewis, Kody Mulverhill, Jake Perry, Jordan Yando – of the
13 players on the Huskies’ roster from
2014. Back are just two players that saw
limited time in the field a year ago. But
back they are.
Returning for their final season in an FA
uniform will be Jacob Scharf and Dylan
Thomas. The third senior on this year’s
squad is varsity baseball newcomer Ryan
Hooper.
The trio will be joined by eight juniors
and a pair of sophomores, who will look
to improve upon the Huskies’ 8-8 record
from a year ago. Juniors on the 2015 version of the FA baseball team will be Jeb
Bartenslager, Bailey Conklin, Ian Mahoney, Steven Marshall, Jared Moody,
Jacob Poupore, Darren Taylor and Ben
Walley.

veteran coach Tim Lamay Sr. “I think we
can compete in the (Central) division if
we get good defense and some timely hitting.”
Lamay also pointed out that he will
need to find some other arms for the
mound, as the only player returning with
varsity pitching experience is the junior
Moody.
What will help Lamay will be the two
sophomores that he has brought up to the
varsity squad.
Jordan Boyea and Zach Monica have
been on the hill for several seasons coming up through the modified and junior
varsity ranks, along with summer baseball, while Walley, and possibly Poupore
and Marshall should be capable of giving Lamay a few innings throughout the
spring season.
FA will take on traditional Central Division rivals Massena, OFA, Potsdam, Gouverneur, Canton and Salmon River and
will, once again, face the Red Raiders for
the Section 10 Class A title. The Huskies
and OFA Blue Devils will meet three times
this season, once each at the team’s respective home field, with the third meeting, a nonleague contest, taking place at
10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, at Clarkson
University.
The Huskies, like the rest of the Northern Athletic Conference, had their originally scheduled season opener called off
due to inclement weather and unplayable fields. FA opened up the season
against archrival Massena on April 14
and suffered an 8-4 setback. Boyea and
Monica both made their varsity debuts
on the hill, while Boyea had a bit more
success at the plate than he did on the
mound.
FA’s scheduled game for April 17 in
Ogdensburg was postponed. The Huskies traveled to Salmon River on April 20
and hosted Potsdam on the 21st. Franklin
Academy will host Canton on Monday,
April 27.

Salmon River laxmen seek repeats of
Section 10 titles, state playoff berths

FORT COVINGTON – Salmon River
coach Jim Barnes summarized the upcoming boys lacrosse season perfectly: “Win the
section title and return to state play.”
For the past six seasons, the SRC boys
varsity lacrosse team has done just that.
The Shamrocks have compiled six perfect
Northern Athletic Conference regular season campaigns and have won the last six
Section 10 Class C titles – only to suffer their
first setback in five of those years in state
play.
This year looks to be no different, as the
Shamrocks return another solid core group
of players, including all three starters on attack.
Leading the offensive charge in the attack
zone for SRC will be senior Russ Oakes and
juniors Alan Jacobs and Skkylar Thomas.
Thomas led the league in scoring in 2013 –
his freshman year. The trio have the capability to put up some gaudy numbers game after game and will be joined on the attack by
sophomore Thomas Thompson and eighthgrader Isaiah Skidders among others.
Salmon River also returns a solid midfield group in the form of seniors Skye Sunday and Trenton Tarbell and junior Bryton
Burns. Sophomore Tanner Tarbell and
freshman Jay Chubb will also be called upon
to help secure the middle of the field and
keep the opposition back on its collective
heels.
Seniors Chad George and Thomas Benedict will held secure the defensive end of the
field and will be joined on the back line by
junior Dawson George, sophomores Myles
Jacobs and Keaton Thomas and freshman
Tehakwirakarenrons McDonald.
Barnes continues to have the luxury of a
deep bench and should have his charges in
midseason form early on, but has an issue
with the last line of defense.
The Shamrocks are down to just one
goalie. They have had two and even three
netminders during the past few campaigns,
but must rely on the lone goaltender on the
current roster.
Thankfully for Barnes and his squad, Troi
Benedict transferred to Salmon River from
Massena or the Shamrocks could possibly
still be searching for a starting keeper. Benedict, according to the coach, will be the fulltime goalie for SRC in its quest to maintain
its status at the top of the league standings.
“Everyone has been working as hard as
they can despite not being able to get outside for practice. We, including myself, are
very anxious for the weather to cooperate so

we can get out and get the season started,”
stated Barnes earlier in the preseason.
The Salmon River spring season will be
two games shorter this year, as Colton-Pierrepont will not be playing a varsity schedule, except for one contest against Saranac
Lake. Otherwise, the Colts will be playing
their spring campaign as a club team, which
leaves six other teams that the Shamrocks
will have to overcome if they want to retain
their Section 10 crowns. Due to the Colts
not playing a varsity schedule, the rest of the
league will probably play a Section 10 opponent as a nonleague contest.
Salmon River will take on traditional rivals Massena, Canton, OFA, Potsdam, St.
Lawrence Central and Saranac Lake, playing
each team twice before the Section 10 playoffs in mid-May.
And the Shamrocks are off to a flying
start, winning their first four regular-season
games despite only getting outside for some
fresh air earlier in the preseason.
SRC opened the season with a 15-10
win over Canton, in a game held at SUNY
Canton, then traveled to Ogdensburg and
soundly defeated the Blue Devils 20-2 to
move to 2-0 and added victories against
Potsdam (17-4) and Massena (15-3).

SRF girls young, boys lack numbers

ST. REGIS FALLS – Overall, the St.
Regis Falls girls varsity softball team is
young.
The Saints have one senior, five juniors and five freshmen on the 2015
team, with all but four members of the
squad returning from a 2014 team that
produced one victory for coach Carolyn
LaPage. That gives the youthful Saints
a bit of an edge for this season and the
coming years, as varsity experience can
only help improve a young team.
Back for another round of varsity action will be Hana Northrup, the team’s
lone senior, along with juniors Macy
Fraser and Harlie Gardner and freshmen
Abby Duquette and Kerrigan Rondeau,
who played last year as eighth-graders.
“I have 11 girls and Madison Austin
is looking to return as my pitcher,” said
LaPage, who noted that four girls – Maya
Walker, Karlee Lucey, Hannaha Martinez and Kayla Jiminez – are first-year
varsity participants.
“My younger athletes are showing a
great deal of poise and strength and two
of my new girls have never played softball before, but are very coachable,” she
continued. “A few of my players participate in leagues in the offseason so, hopefully, this will pay off.”
LaPage noted before the season started that she hasn’t finalized positions,
but anticipates that Austin will be in the
circle and Northrup should anchor the
corner of the infield at first base.
Duquette looks to be the frontrunner at shortstop, while Fraser may start
at third base. Gardner has moved from
the infield and taken up residence behind the plate with Rondeau working in
at second base and behind the plate in
place of the graduated Makensy Bazdaric, who caught the majority of games last
season.
“Makala, Kayla and Hannaha will be
outfielders and Maya and Karlee can
play either infield or outfield,” pointed
out LaPage.
The girls have already equalled last
year’s win total in just their third game,
earning a doubleheader split against
Parishville-Hopkinton. The lady Saints
lost in their first outing of the season, a
14-13, nine-inning setback to ColtonPierrepont.
Hurting for players
The St. Regis Falls varsity baseball
team is in dire straights.
The SRF boys were supposed to be
led by a pair of seniors – Ryan Duquette
and Matt Cummings – a pair of returning
NAC All-Northerns. Since second-year
coach Jason Cummings sent in his preview information, he has received word
that Duquette may not be available to
the team at all this spring.
Duquette suffered a wrist injury during the Saints winter hoop campaign,
which has required further medical
treatment and put his spring season in
jeopardy, according to information received by the Telegram from his father,
Sonny.
Couple that injury with the loss of
five players from last year’s team, and
that leaves the younger Cummings and
three returning players to lead the way.
Back for another go on the diamond will
be Jesse Goodrow, Dylan DeCarr and
Trystin Hartson, but Hartson suffered an
injury during the preseason and is also
questionable for the rest of the spring
campaign. Newcomers to the SRF diamond will be seniors Evan Atkinson and
Connor Palmer, juniors Elijah Dale and
Hieu Tran (foreign exchange student
from Vietnam), sophomore Zach White
and eighth-grader Jason Bouvia.
With only 11 players on the varsity
roster to begin with, coach Cummings
finds himself in a position of needing
bodies to fill out the lineup.
He must now rely on a modified player
or two passing the physical fitness test in
order to move up to the varsity level, or
the Saints’ season may truely be in jeopardy.
The SRF boys did manage to field a
team for the season-opening doubleheader against Parishville-Hopkinton
on April 17, but could not produce
enough runs to earn a victory. The P-H
Panthers swept the twinbill 5-2 and 17-2.

What a difference a year makes.
At the conclusion of the 2014 spring
campaign, the Franklin Academy golf
team looked to return several of its scoring players for the 2015 season. But
not all returned as planned, as Northern Athletic Conference standout Davis Sprague has taken his game to prep
school and Nathan Hunter is away on a
foreign exchange program. Couple that
with the loss of a pair of graduates from
the 2014 team, and the Huskies look to
rebuild with a young cast of golfers.
That leaves the FA linksters with one
senior – Dylan Tavernia – to help coach
Chris Kelley guide the team toward the
top of the NAC Division I standings.
“The 2015 edition of the Franklin
Academy golf team is a young, but experienced team. This year’s team returns seven of the top eight golfers from
2014,” explained Kelley. “There will be
quite a competition for the traveling
team spots, with all 12 members of the
team capable of shooting a hot round on
any given day.”
Juniors Brent Lamica and Devan Kelley look to be among the members of the
traveling team, while half of the squad
is made up of sophomores Joey Brown,
Adam Dumas, Logan Lamb, Alex Premo,
Blake Pritchard and Brendan Raville. All
eight players saw time scoring for the
Huskies during the 2014 season.
And in a trio of up-and-coming freshmen – Chandler Rivers, Will Perrigo and
Jack Petroski – and the future of the FA
golf program looks to be solid down the
road.
And it wasn’t just for Franklin Academy that these student/athletes performed, as the majority of them took
part in several tournament events over
the summer.
“For the first time in as long as I can
remember, members of the 2014 team
played a lot of tournament golf last summer,” recalled the coach. “The North
Country Junior Golf Tour, based out
of Canton, gave many of the boys a full
schedule of competitive junior tournaments around the North Country. That
extra experience should prove helpful
this season.
“As far as the Section 10, Division I
golf goes, I think it’s going to be a matter of any team on any given day this
season. This looks to be about the most
competitively, well-balanced season
that I can remember,” pointed out Kelley.

Dumas is one of six sophomores on the
FA golf team that is in a battle for one of
the eight scoring spots on the team.
est by graduation, but somehow, always
seem to field competitive teams, as does
Massena, while Gouverneur has quietly
built a solid program and has steadily
improved over the past few seasons.
Throw into the mix Brushton-Moira,
which has arguably the best golfer in
Section 10 in the form of Devin Delisle, and Madrid-Waddington, a pair of
teams that will be in their second seasons as D-I competitors, and the Division I crown could very well come down
to the final matches of the regular season.
“Overall, we have a young squad that
is quite competition-hardened this
year. We will be working hard this season to eliminate the big number holes
that can really hurt an otherwise solid
round of golf. I expect that there will be
great competition among the players to
earn one of the top-eight spots,” summarized Kelley.
The league opens play next week and
will conclude with the Section 10 championship rounds on Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23, at the St. Lawrence
Inn course in Canton. The top eight
finishers in the two-day event will represent the section in state play on May
31 and June 1 at Cornell University in
Ithaca.

Numbers improve for SRC track teams

FORT COVINGTON – Salmon River
coaches Shawn Martin and Kim Russell are
both in their third seasons at the helm of the
SRC track & field teams. The year before the
took over, the Shamrocks struggled with a
low turnout, much less earning points for
the team score.
Two years ago, the squad size number
grew a bit and the team still struggled to earn
points on the track.
Last year, progress was made as both the
boys and girls squads picked up a team victory.
This season, the teams look to take that
step a bit further and be competitive in the
Northern Athletic Conference. The size of
the boys team remains about the same,
while the number of participants on the girls
team has grown, despite the emergence of
the girls lacrosse program and the softball
team.
That bodes well for the two coaches, who
both look for the Shamrocks to improve on
their respective one-win campaigns last
year.
“Both squads are hopeful to improve as a
team, as well as individually,” stated coach
Martin, who brings his coaching experience
out of the gym where the SRC boys varsity
basketball team is coming off a stellar season.
“We both return some strong athletes,”
continued Martin, who pointed out that junior Jordan Bigness and eighth-grader Tyler
Shorette will look for some quality races in
the distance events.
Coach Martin also pointed out that seniors Chance Monette and Joseph Herne
will help the Shamrocks earn points in the
throwing events.
The boys’ coach also pointed out that
team newcomers Kody Daze, Brandon Parent, Tyson Thomas and Gavin Seals will
look to establish a solid sprint group for the
Shamrocks.
On the girls’ side, junior Caroline Russell
and sophomore Nidia DeArmayero return
to the sprints and hurdles for coach Russell, while Tatyanna Figueroa appears to
the frontrunner in the shot put and discus
events.
Tiara Cook returns to lead the SRC charge
in the distance races, while newcomers Elizabeth Fleming, Lindsay McKernan, Taylor
Showen and Chase Thompson look to mold
into mid-distance runners.

road the entire season, as the Shamrocks will
not use their home field at all this season.

SRC baseball team looks to improve

FORT COVINGTON – The Salmon River
varsity baseball team will look for improvements in all areas of its 2015 season.
The Shamrocks are coming off a hardluck 1-12 campaign and, according to veteran coach Ben Barkley, the team only get
better.
“We look to rebound from last year’s
record. Offensively, we can only improve
across the board,” stated Barkley. “We need
to get on base and we need to be able to
advance runners into scoring position. Patience at the plate will be key.”
But the SRC squad will have to do so
without a pair of key players from a season
ago. Gone are Justin Bigness, who graduated in June, and Zach Smith, who suffered
a severe knee injury during the basketball
season and had surgery to repair his ACL.
Smith, who is only a junior, missed most
of the hoop season and will miss all of the
spring, and probably, most of the summer
baseball season while going through his rehab regime.
While it’s only two players lost from a solid group of returning players, Smith was the
offensive team leader a year ago – in every
offensive category and, according to Barkley, batted .487 in 2014.
That does put a crimp in the offensive
production of a team that is expected to improve drastically.
Returning to the SRC lineup are seniors
Jordan Wood, Tyler Brooks, Brandon Bryington, Reno Paquin, John Harvey, Devlin
Laughing and Marc Mainville.
Joining Wood and Mainville in the projected pitching rotation should be Paquin,
and juniors David Roundpoint and Tyler
Sisto. But the ace of the staff could be a junior in the form of Cole Lage, who showed
great promise last season while Barkley was
testing out arms on the hill. Both Lage and
Paquin struggled from the bump early on in
the season, but as they became more comfortable on the hill, they threw more and
more strikes, which is what a team needs
to be competitive – especially in the always
tough Central Division.
Helping out with the pitching staff this
season is former Massena Red Raider
standout Alex “AJ” Kormanyos, who will
don a Salmon River uniform as an assistant
coach.
But all the projections and changes just
happen to hang on how well Smith’s replacement – sophomore Cody Pickering –
fares behind the plate in the very demanding position.
Salmon River will face traditional Central Division opponents in the form of Massena, Franklin Academy, OFA, Canton,
Potsdam and Gouverneur, while the team
will play a pair of nonleague games against
Franklin County foe Brushton-Moira.
The season began on a positive note for
the SRC boys with a 2-0 win over Potsdam,
but found out that the season has its ups
and downs in the second game of the year,
a 14-1 defeat by BMC.

Expectations high for SRC golf team

FORT COVINGTON – “My expectations for this season are high,” said
Salmon River golf coach John LePage.
“I have experienced players returning with Otto “Tommy” Thomas, Evan
Swamp, Rosentonkwon Tarbell and
Jacob Swamp,” he continued. “In addition, Myles McDonald will be playing
golf for Salmon River for the first time.
He should be a top contender in the section, as he has played golf at Cedar View
(the home course for the Shamrocks)
for the past 10 years, where he has become one of the best golfers to play
there.”
LePage also pointed out that there
are several players whom he expects
should help shore up some of the scoring spots on the team. The coach named
players like Jesse McDonald, Connor
Walwrath, Salmon River hockey goalie
Jarrod Jackson, Coy Tarbell, Chandler
Shatraw, Quentin Thomas and Stephen
Tremblay.
He also pointed out that seniors
Brandon Burdash, Justin DeJung and
Reno Lauzon should vie for one of the
scoring positions on the squad and,
that the ladies on the team will compete right along side the boys and there
scores will be incorporated into the
team’s total.
“As you can see, there are many others (22 total) on the team. I am hoping
for some surprises,” he added.
The Salmon River golf team will
participate in Section 10, Division II
against perennial powers NorwoodNorfolk and Tupper Lake, along with
Clifton-Fine, Heuvelton and secondyear member Canton, which restarted
its program last year.
Missing from the D-II ranks again
this season are Madrid-Waddington
and Brushton-Moira, which will take
part in Division I play for the second
straight season.
Salmon River opens the season on the
road on Friday, traveling to NorwoodNorfolk for an early-season showdown
which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
The Shamrocks have their home
opener at Cedar View (Rt. 37C) at 3:30

Chateaugay boys, girls look for
solid seasons on the diamond

CHATEAUGAY – Chateaugay coach
Ron Boyea will be the first to tell you that
the 2014 spring baseball season was a
down year, as the squad finished with a
6-7 overall record and posted a 5-5 Northern Athletic Conference divisional mark.
But that was then and 2015 is a brand
new season with nine returning players.
The Bulldogs should overcome a loss of
four from a year ago and will be led this
season by returning All-Northerns in seniors Nick Ashline and Zach Cowan.
Ashline saw extensive time on the
mound for Chateaugay last year and
could carry the bulk of the pitching load
in the early part of the season, although
Boyea does have other pitching options at
his disposal.
“At this time, Nick and varsity newcomer Kieran Gibson will log most of the
innings. As other pitchers improve, their
innings will increase, giving Nick and Kieran rest as needed,” explained the veteran Chateaugay coach, who added that
“the rest of the positions are up for grabs.
“I am experiencing good, healthy competition for each position,” added coach
Boyea.
Returning and vying for a starting job
will be seniors Dave Niles, who has the
early nod behind the plate, Chris Cluff,
Austin Gholson and Derek Ribot, along
with juniors Patrick Boyea, Michael Sandvig and Nick Blair.
Sophomores Zack Taylor, Blayne Nichols, Andrew Locklin and Chris Redmond
and the two freshmen, Gibson and Chandler LaPlante, give the Bulldogs a solid
core for the next few seasons.
“I feel that we are more athletic than
last season and we are definitely looking
to improve on last year’s record,” pointed
out the veteran mentor. “We are working very hard to improve upon one of our
weak areas from last year. We are taking
extra batting-cage sessions in an effort to
improve our plate production from a year
ago.
“Since, at least, five positions will be
filled by non-returning players, our defense is, and will be, a learning process,”
summarized the coach.
The CCS boys have had their first two
games of the posted scheduled postponed, but did open up the season with
a 5-3 win over St. Lawrence Central in
Brasher Falls on April 17.
CCS girls are young
There is not a single senior on the Cha-
teaugay softball roster this season, which
hopefully means that the team will be set
for the next couple of NAC East Division
seasons.
Third-year Chateaugay coach Kate
Dwyer has 10 of her 12-player roster returning to the diamond from a year ago,
which gives the Bulldogs a more-thansolid foundation for a few years to come.
Leading the charge for the CCS softball
squad will be juniors Madison Breen, Brianna Cook, Abby Cowan, Kim Reville and
Kayley Whyte. The five will be joined this
year by classmate Courtney Yando, who
should bring another measure of speed to
the Bulldogs’ lineup.
Also returning to the Chateaugay roster are sophomores Alicia Cook, Danielle
Cook, Emily Dwyer, Morgan Johnston
and Rachael Young, along with varsity
newcomer Caitlynn McGillicuddy.
Young and McGillicuddy should see
the bulk of the action from inside the circle, while coach Dwyer has several players that have the capability of playing
multiple positions in the field.
Reville and Dwyer will share time at
first base, while Dwyer and Danielle Cook
will see time behind the plate. It appears
that Whyte had a lock on second base, although McGillicuddy can step into that
position as well.
Alicia Cook gets the nod at shortstop
with Danielle Cook and Reville able to set
up shop at third.
Coach Dwyer also has several options
in the outfield among Breen, Yando,
Johnston, Brianna Cook and Cowan, who
can also play at either first or third base.
The key to the season will be pitching
and defense. If Young and/or McGillicuddy can keep the opposition honest,
and the girls make the plays that they are
suppose to make, it could be a break-out
season for Chateaugay.
But that season hasn’t begun as anticipated, as the CCS have lost their first
three outings of 2015, falling to BrushtonMoira, St. Lawrence Central and ColtonPierrepont. There is time to turn the season around and equal or improve on last
year’s 13-4 overall mark. Chateaugay was
10-2 in the East Division a year ago.

FA boys, girls reload for track season

For the first time in seven seasons, the Franklin Academy boys
lost a regular-season meet when
the Gouverneur Wildcats came
to Malone and knocked off the
defending champs. The FA boys
did, however, win the Section 10
championship crown at season’s
end.
But the boys lost a great deal of
point production to graduation
with several first- and secondteam All-Northerns.
And for the lady Huskies, they
fell short against perennial-power Canton and were runner-up in
both the regular season and sectional meet. They, too, lost a lot
of scoring power to graduation,
most notably Becca Bond, Morgan Bronner, Carrie Pomainville,
Marissa Perez, Angelia Grimshaw
and Amiee Fleury. Most of these
girls are taking part in college athletics, along with their academic
schedules.
The boys also lost a multitude
of scoring punch as Jamiel Stapleton and Daniel Badgley were two
of the top scorers in the hurdles,
sprints and jumps, while Brady
Monette earned a second team
All-Northern spot in the pentathlon. Bach Schanck was a member
of the second-team All-Northern
4x800-meter relay team, while
Tehatakenta Boots was a first
team member for the shot put
and made the second team in
discus. Couple that with Jarret
Lamica and Cody Garland in the
sprints, throws and jump events,
and a good portion of the scoring
is gone.
But, both teams do return a
bounty of potential point-leading
performers.
To start with, Mitchell Marlow packs the most point-punch
among the returnees. Last season, Marlow made his way on to
the second team in the 1600-meters, the 3200-meter runs, along
with participating on the 4x800meter relay team. He was also a
first time member in the indoor
1600 meters. And he’s only a junior!
Also back for FA will be Will
Bronner, who has continued to
amass points throughout his
FA career, and his senior season
should be no exception. Bronner
was a second team member in
the steeple chase last spring and
he also runs the long and middle
distances and was a key member
on the 4x400-meter relay team.
Add in Mike Campbell (2nd
team 4x800), Curtis Landry (2nd
team 4x800, distance races), RJ
Pearsall, a sophomore (2nd team
4x800), Ryan Tober (2nd team
4x400), Joe Tracy (2nd team
800-meters and 4x400) and the
Lavoie brothers, Dylan (1st team
steeplechase) and Brandon (2nd
team 4x800), and junior Josh
Bordeaux (2nd team 4x800 and
middle distances) and the points
should certainly return.
Throw into the mix BrushtonMoira student Marco Pirazzini,
a foreign exchange student from
Italy, who equalled the Franklin
Academy 55-meter hurdle record
this past winter, and the Huskies
look like they will be near the top
again this season.
Mix in a bunch of seniors looking to make a mark before they
leave, and FA looks well-rounded.
Bailey Fellion and Tyler Martin, who is recovering from surgery, will help the Huskies in the
sprints, while Garrett Duval will
be both on the track and flying
into the pits in the long and triple
jump events. Senior Dakota Connell will take part in the jumping
events, the sprints and may take a
stab at the pentathlon.
Juniors Josh Dora and Matt
Gadway will compete in the
throwing events, with Gadway
also running in the middle-distance races.
There are several other returning members of last year’s team
and a whole batch of newcomers
who, unfortunately, are just too
plentiful to name everyone.
On the ladies’ side, will the
Franklin Academy girls have
enough returning point producers to upend the Canton Golden
Bears, or will Norwood-Norfolk
or Gouverneur take advantage of
FA and Canton beating one another up to sneak past?
It will be an interesting spring
season for the FA girls, who lost
an abundance of points in the
team column.
But don’t count out the returning veterans such as Hannah Perry, who will jump into the pits and
toss the shot and discus, while
Franklin Academy’s Mitchell
Marlow and Dylan Lavoie will
be key members for the Huskies
this spring. Marlow is one of the
league’s top distance runners,
while Lavoie, a Chateaugay
student, joins Marlow in taking
part in a number of distance and
relay events.
the distance events are owned
by Emily Pomainville, who has
been among the sectional leaders for the past couple of seasons
and will look to wear the green &
white of FA at the state meet in
June.
Lillian Gishey has steadily improved over the course of her FA
career and is looking to go out in
style, while Tricia Cositore is one
determined athlete and will be a
force on the track for a couple of
more seasons.
Liz Kielly is known for her hurdling capabilities and has improved over the past year, while
Lauren Reynolds takes part in the
relay races as Rinn Schanck gets
her work in just going from event
to event.
Also returning the FA lineup
are Madeleine Champagne,
Jamel Clark, Rachel Haas, Jenna
Broker, Annie Campbell, Jordyn Dora, Mina Fakir, Samantha “Sam” Fefee, Adriana Perez,
Hayley Lewis, Loryn Fouse and
Kennedy Jarvis, who will look to
dominate in the throwing events.
Along with those coming back
for another spring campaign, FA
coaches Scott Marlow and Cory
West also have a good group of
young performers entering the
ranks. Names that you will read,
and hear about, for the new few
seasons could very well be Madalyn Saumier, Katie Dupree, Kaila
Feiman, Alexis Herne Martha
Ibarra, Makayla Marshall, Kimberlee Malark, Rebecca Penera,
while Jenna Rippens is a foreign
exchange student and looks to
produce points before her term

The FA boys and girls outdoor
track & field teams have identical Section 10 schedules and will
hosted the season-opening meet
on April 22. The Huskies entertained the Tupper Lake Lumberjacks and the Norwood-Norfolk
Flyers.
Both teams will travel to Ogdensburg on Saturday (April 25)
for the annual Section 10 Relay
Carnival. The event is scheduled
to begin at 10 a.m.

against the Canton Golden Bears
at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1.
