Athletic Excellence CVA OLYMPIC HOPEFULS With the 2014 Olympic Winter Games close at hand, the CVA community is once again rooting for our alumni as they compete in qualifying events during the coming months. Most U.S. Olympic team members are selected on the basis of World Cup results between September 2013 and January 2014 (criteria and time frame varies from discipline to discipline). As these athletes enter their 2013/2014 season, we wish them luck and look forward to seeing them on the big stage in Sochi. Here are a few CVA Olympic hopefuls to watch: BODE MILLER '96 As one of alpine racing’s most decorated athletes in history, Bode Miller is no stranger to Olympic competition. He has competed in the last four Olympics, securing five medals. Miller will be emerging into qualifying World Cups after missing the 2013 season due to injury. The ski community’s curiosity is abuzz, awaiting his return to snow. SETH WESCOTT '94 Seth Wescott has competed in the past two Olympics and won gold both times for boardercross. With an impressive World Cup showing last season, highlighted by a first place finish in Telluride, Wescott looks better than ever. Working hard to recover from ACL reconstruction, he hopes to be ready for the Sochi games. EMILY COOK '97 As a two-time Olympian and fivetime National Champion, Emily Cook is a likely contender for a spot on the U.S. Aerial Team for Sochi. In recent years, she has been consistently on the leader boards. Coming off a National Championship win and many top-ten World Cup finishes, Cook is one to watch. ALEX TUTTLE '10 For the last few years, Alex Tuttle has been a rising boardercross athlete. Tuttle is coming off a big year, earning his first World Cup podium and being named to the U.S. Snowboard Team. He has been training hard in the off-season and, with a full World Cup schedule leading up to Sochi, Tuttle’s chances of making the team are promising. Photo by Monte Isom JEREMY COTA '07 Jeremy Cota has been a top ranked World Cup skier for the last several years. Cota, a U.S. Mogul Ski Team member, has been preparing this summer at the Lake Placid water ramps, tightening up his jumps. After narrowly missing the Olympic team four years ago, look for Cota to show up to qualifiers determined. DAVE DIGRAVIO '05 Having been a member of the U.S. Mogul Ski Team for eight years, and a 15-time top ten World Cup finisher, Dave DiGravio has the experience to make the 2014 Olympic team in Sochi. In recent years, DiGravio has been ranked as high as 10th on the World Cup standings. Will this be his year to break through? Other CVA alumni that may be attending the Sochi Games: U.S. Ski Team Coach Forest Carey '94; Canadian Snowboard Team Coach Mark Fawcett '90; New Zealand Ski Team Members Jamie and Nick Prebble '10 (PG); Great Britan Ski Racer Alexandra Tilley '11 (PG); U.S. Park and Pipe Skier Annalisa Drew '12 (PG)
