If you haven’t been to a Lunch and Learn lately you are really missing out - the
food is great and the subject matter fascinating. This month the spotlight is on
EYEsight – please LOOK at the date, Monday, May 11th, which is an unusual day
for L&L. Come to eat and learn how to make the most of your vision.
You’ve already missed some FUN dances! Ask around – those who came and
contra danced with us in March had a great time! It’s like line dancing only better,
right Joan, Joan, Stella, Mary, Raquel and others who were there? We’d love to see
more people at the May dance, with our old favorite, Tom Yook. It’s Saturday,
May 16, at 7:00pm in Panorama Hall.
Now that the winter months are behind us, we really have no reason for a dirty
car. Get your MotoSpa coupons here – just ask for one at the front desk - ½ of what
you pay comes back to support CRSC, and you get a $13 car wash for $10. Plus, as
I find every time I go there, it’s a kaleidoscopic experience. That car wash is so
unusual! It’s full of sights and sounds and most of all COLORS! If you haven’t
tried it yet, grab a friend to go with you – you can oooh and ahhh together as your
car gets cleaned!
Please spread the word about your Senior Center – take some newsletters to your
doctor, your church, or other places. At the very least, you could drop off some
brochures as you move around town. Think about your peers who haven’t yet
discovered this incredible Senior Center – and see me for a handful of brochures.

You will note the addition of some trips this month that have no Activity
Fees associated with them. We have some grant funding available to us for
very specific trips and will take advantage of these funds when possible. We
encourage you to participate in these free trips. Please sign up in advance,
as always, as we need to solicit drivers and arrange vehicles. The first time
you go on one of these trips, you will be asked to fill out a special rider form
for our records for reimbursement.
¨ Please note the unusual sign up day for May activities. It is Wednesday,
April 29th, beginning at 8:30 AM. This is because of the 9News Health Fair
taking place at the Rec Center on our usual sign-up day, Friday, April 24th.

Our part-time receptionist position is now job-shared, and we welcome Lorry
Bishop, who will be managing the front desk Monday and Tuesday mornings or
as needed. Lorry currently has an important mission, taking care of the needs of
her parents. In the last year she moved them to a condo in Castle Rock, selling
their long-time home in Colorado Springs. She enjoyed renovating and
decorating their new place, and says they love it. She is just 1.5 miles away and
sees them nearly every day; she says this means the world to her and she’s
fortunate to be able to be there for them, although she admits that it’s hard to see
them age. Lorry is also close to her twin sister who lives in Denver. Lorry and
her husband love to travel and to try out new restaurants. A favorite restaurant
she recommends is The Pepper Tree in Colorado Springs, which she says is
quaint with gorgeous views and wonderful food. Her other passion is traveling,
which she and her husband love to do. She dreams of taking her extended family
with her to Hawaii someday, and the places on her wish list include Tahiti and
Bora Bora. Maybe she’ll take us!!!

Volunteer of the Month
May Volunteer: Doris Rollins
It’s tough keeping up with our Volunteer of the Month, Doris Rollins. She appears to
be everywhere, whether it’s out in the community soliciting sponsorships for an event,
sitting at the front desk as a receptionist, having one of many meetings she regularly
attends as one of our Vice Presidents, working the land at the Senior Center garden,
brainstorming and organizing new fundraising programs for the Center, or schussing down
the slopes of Loveland Ski Area as a member and trainer of the Ski Patrol. Imagine all that
she would be doing if she had moved here before 2011.
Doris and her husband, Gordon, retired here after her two children moved to this area
and she wanted to be close to them, just like many of you did. All four of her
grandchildren, whom she lovingly refers to as “the grandmonsters,” are now teenagers and
she enjoys having them close by. She and Gordon have been married 48 years, having met
after she finished nursing school and he received his commission in the U.S. Army. They
lived all over the U.S. and Europe during his career in the armed forces.
She worked as a nurse in a variety of roles, but it was while working for Kaiser
Permanente that she transitioned into an unlikely new field, telecommunications, a
booming high-tech area that she found she really enjoyed. She retired from George Mason University in Virginia, but as you
can see from all she does here, one can hardly call her retired!
We love uncovering interesting facts about our volunteers: you’ll never believe that Doris grew up speaking French,
although she admits she’s rusty at the beautiful language now and has barely an accent. She grew up in Rhode Island in an area
dominated by French heritage. She says she never spoke English until first grade, where, in her Catholic French-speaking
school they were required by the government to speak English one day a week. Though she was an only child, she came from a
large immigrant family and had thirty-two first cousins all in the area. She said she could never misbehave, because someone in
her family would know about it.
Not being one to sit around, she and Gordon started playing golf in the Senior Center league when they moved here, and
since he traveled so much, she decided to check out the Center. She remembers the first time she got on the bus, not knowing
anyone, to go out for a meal, and returned with a dozen friends. She knows the valuable service the Center
provides, so
even though she’s busy with ski patrol, her family and other obligations, she says she will continue doing whatever she can to
help the Senior Center succeed. Make sure and thank Doris the next time you see her - if you can catch up with her to do so!

This holistic, natural, complimentary therapy works on the principle that energy balance will lead to increased vitality and greater
enjoyment of life. Your feet and hands are considered the meridians, or pathways in the body, along which vital energy is said to flow.
These meridians can be blocked from chronic pain, toxins, and waste products from medications and food-related harmful substances.
When this happens you may lack energy, feel tired, fatigued or
unmotivated. Your organs have to work harder to function and
that takes even more energy out of you.
Reflexology can loosen the blockades to allow for increased
circulation so that nutrients, oxygen, hormones the body produces,
and energy will all flow along the meridians, and you are once
again balanced. Everything in your body is interconnected, and
when energy flows are open, your organs and cells can function
properly.
Reflexologists work from maps of predefined pressure points
(see map on right) that are located on the hands and feet. These
pressure points connect directly through the nervous system and
affect the body's organs and glands. The reflexologist manipulates
the pressure points according to specific techniques of reflexology
therapy. By means of this touching therapy, any part of the body
that is the source of pain, illness, or potential disability can be
strengthened through the application of pressure at the respective
foot or hand location. New vitality can flow and bring you
relaxation, stress reduction, better coping mechanisms for pain,
more energy and enjoyment of life.
I am a certified Reflexologist and conduct sessions at the
Senior Center on Fridays from 9am-12pm. Sign-up for a
30-minute session at the front desk or by phone. The reduced price sessions are $15 for members and $18 for non-members. If you have
questions about whether this is something that might help you, call me at 303-564-6300. I can also schedule a treatment for you at a more
convenient time if Fridays don’t work. I look forward to making your hands and feet happy, with an extra touch on your whole body
system.

We live in a beautiful state and a beautiful area, so join us for some hikes
this season. Phyllis picks itineraries that are close and are hikeable for
seniors. Gateway Mesa is a 1.8 mile loop that connects to the Mitchell Creek
Canyon 1.5 mile segment in the Founders area. The first part of the hike is
on a bluff with steep, rock-capped cliffs overlooking the Cherry Creek
Valley and the Rocky Mountains. The second part winds through a narrow
riparian canyon in which hikers will travel through four habitats with a wide
variety of wildlife. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring plenty of water
and a snack, sunscreen and dress for the weather.
More of you need to find out about Pickleball, the fastest growing
senior sport in the U.S. It’s played on a small court with a low net and
lightweight whiffle balls, either singles or doubles. Dan Mitchell will
facilitate clinics to learn to play on Thursdays in May at 9:00 AM at our
outdoor court at Founder’s Park. If you are interested in finding out if
this is something for you, pick up a map and game rules at the Senior
Center front desk, and meet Dan at the park on a Thursday or two.
In lieu of a "Remembering our Veterans" (ROV)
meeting in May, ROV and the Senior Center have
scheduled a trip to the National Museum of WWII
Aviation in Colorado Springs on Tuesday, May 19th,
followed by lunch at the nearby Airplane Restaurant.

This very special museum was designed to preserve
and strengthen the best traditions of the American
aviation past and inspire new generations of leaders
and innovators in the future; it is the only museum
dedicated to aviation in WWII and you’ll see many
planes. After our tour, we will go to the nearby
Airplane Museum (yes, you’ll eat in a plane) for lunch
(on your own). Please sign up in advance so we can
make the appropriate arrangements. Arrive that
morning by 8:30 AM to get checked in.
These two special shopping trips have no Activity Fee,
and your purchases will raise funds for the Center.
Short Trip:
Leaves here at 9:00 – board bus to return at 11:30
Long Trip:
Leaves at 10:00 - board bus to return at 2:00
This allows for shopping in the many nearby stores
and lunch at Whole Foods or nearby restaurants.
1) Friday, May 1st at 9:30 AM. This is a trip to the “Senior Resource & Health Fair”
with free lunch and entertainment with the theme “Route 66 Road Trip”
sponsored by the Salvation Army in Denver. You will be back at the Center about
2:00 PM, and it’s all free.
2) Thursday, May 7th at 8:45 AM we will go to the Parker Senior Center for the
Douglas County Seniors’ Council Meeting with a free breakfast, senior
information, and a presentation on healthy teeth. This group is becoming more
influential for seniors every month and the trip is free.

living, and Mill Vista Lodge is a continuing care neighborhood, with
assisted living, memory care, short-term rehabilitation and nursing

Whole Foods Highlands Ranch is donating a percentage of net sales for the
entire day to our Senior Center, so please save your shopping for this day. We
are offering transportation with no Activity Fee because of grant funding.

Blue Bonnet is Mexican food at its freshest. This Denver family-owned café has
been in business for more than 40 years, and has a patio for your enjoyment if
the weather is nice. Handmade chips and salsa, chimichangas, award-winning
margaritas, flautas, chile rellenos, and fish tacos are just a few of the items
made from scratch. Activity Fee doesn’t include the cost of your individual lunch.

The monthly Seniors’ Council organizers are encouraging not just providers, but
also citizens to participate, as your input is desired. This month it will be at the
Parker Senior Center and will include a free breakfast and a presentation,

This is way different than the musicals we usually go to see, but sometimes you
just have to do something different. This is a one-man show that is the longest
solo-show running on Broadway. The show deals with how men and women
relate to each other. There will be some “adult humor,” as you’d expect, but
you’re adults so they will let you in the theater. Plus, it’s in the beautiful and
easy to get to (right up the escalator from where you are dropped off) Galleria
Theatre at the Performing Arts Center. Get ready to laugh and have some fun.
Come see why The Perfect Landing is called “Denver’s Hidden Gem
Restaurant.” Not only will you have a delightful lunch featuring signature salads,
sandwiches and their special fresh cod fish and chips or crab and bacon mac
and cheese, but you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the take-offs and landings of the
planes. IMPORTANT NOTE: The restaurant is up a flight of stairs. Activity Fee

TRIP - National Museum of World War II Aviation

The Remembering our Veterans Group (ROV) is co-hosting this trip and
encourages any interested veterans to attend. This is the only museum of its
kind in the country. The group will have a tour of the facility and get a better
understanding of the men who risked so much in the skies for our freedom.
After the tour the group will go to the nearby Airplane Restaurant for lunch
before returning. The Activity Fee includes the bus and the entrance ticket, but
not the cost of your individual lunch.

can also take the free shuttle up and down the 16th Street Mall. You’ll be free to
eat lunch at one of many restaurants inside Union Station or around the area.
The buses will board at 2:00 PM to return to Castle Rock.

There are some policies that can be changed throughout the year.
While this 1 or 2 mile walk for seniors may be local in Festival Park, we want to
have some fun by going together in a free bus (from a grant) from here. That
way you don’t have to worry about parking, and we can make sure to let
everyone there know that the Senior Center has arrived!! Participants can
complete either of the two walks, with refreshments available afterwards. You
can also attend the softball and cookout event below (the bus can drop you off
there). Let’s support the Town of Castle Rock in the fitness walk.
NEW - Low Vision Support Group

If you have vision problems of any kind or severity, you know how difficult it can
be; you are not alone and sometimes going through similar things with other
people can really make life more fulfilling. We are hosting a new support group
for people with low vision. It will meet monthly, on the third Tuesday, at 1:00 PM
and will be facilitated by Laura from the “Beyond Vision Program” of the Center
for People with Disabilities. Invite any seniors you know who may benefit from
this group. Laura is a wealth of knowledge for services that are available to you.

you will find some Mother’s Day cards.
Many of us no longer have our mothers with us, but we carry them in
our hearts. Our mothers were the first person we knew, the first to love
us, our first friends and probably the first to worry about us. Some of us
are mothers ourselves, some grandmothers and some even are
great-grandmothers. That is not to say that our male members are not
wonderful fathers and grandfathers, but, hey this month is May and it’s

HERE IS HOW THE DERBY WORKS
After you purchase a numbered ticket, a "rubber ducky" is
entered into the derby race with the number on your ticket
affixed to one of our highly trained ducks. Only those
duckies that have a ticket sponsor will be allowed to race in
the Derby. On the day of the race we release all the duckies
that have a sponsor, at the same time, into the water at the
starting point on Plum Creek. Then these highly trained
duckies RACE like crazy for the finish line.
If your duck, with your ticket number, is the first, second or
third to make it to the finish line in Plum Creek ....you win
$2000 for first and a chance to win $1 million, $750 for
second and a chance to win a new car, or $250 for third
place. Every numbered ticket has a corresponding
number affixed to a ducky. One ticket, one ducky!
All of our rubber duckies are in training right now, for this
big annual derby race. Each ducky is anxious to be in the
Derby Race. Ducky tickets are available at the Center for a
$5 donation, or 5 for $20.

time to look at the memorabilia the presenters bring along. Very interesting.
Our first Contra Dance was held in March and those who came learned some fun dances. We have dances the 3rd Saturday of the month.
