I did say Holidays right? Oh my, hope you’re all ready for them! Where does the time go?.... We will have a few changes for 2012. First, when you become a member, it will be good for 12 months from membership sign-up. So for example, if you become a member 2-12-12, then your membership will go to 2-28-13. We will send you a letter in January 2013 to remind you that your membership will expire in February. Couples will get a $5.00 discount and single members will receive a $2.50 certificate good for one year to be used on an activity or event. In our wellness program we will have changes to Reflexology and Chair Massage. Reflexology will go to a weekly Friday opportunity. The price per session will be $15.00. Chair Massage will be available 3 weeks a month and the client will pay $12.00 per session. We will continue Lunch and Learns and SeniorzArt as usual. Hope you enjoyed our November Newsletter. We had a question about the cost, due to the color throughout. We entered into an agreement with Liturgical Publications, whereas they provide the full color and printing costs of our newsletter in exchange for advertisement they sell. You will see on two pages of our newsletter there are advertisements for local community businesses. With full color and 4 additional pages, we will save several thousand dollars a year. We hope that this new look will be appealing and draw a little more attention to our articles and happenings, We are really excited about these changes and, as always, we love feedback! Remember...To hear a bird sing in the dark of December is oh so sweet and something to remember! The staff and I wish you a wonderful Holiday Season! ~ Terry Executive Director ASSOCIATES Accountant Legal Advisor Wellness Coordinator Newsletter Editor Greg Bell, CPA Jaime Stewart Colleen Morton, R.N. Whether you do your volunteer work for the Center outside or inside the Center, please fill out volunteer time sheets located at the front desk. The time and talents you donate to the center are greatly appreciated! All of us working together make a contribution to the general welfare as well as the financial stability of the Center. Please remember to turn in your volunteer hours by the end of the month so we can complete our monthly report! 3 RO CKWORTHY Volunteer of the Month November Volunteer: Rich Smoski Rich Smoski is the kind of guy who will always give you a hand. If you asked him, he’d even give you the shirt off his back! He’s that kind of person. He’s kind, personable and his ―can-do‖ attitude is always there, because no matter what has to be done, he’ll help because he has a heart of gold. As the youngest of three kids born to deaf parents, Rich learned to adapt quickly. He and his two older siblings were all five years apart; his older siblings were stronger with their sign language skill, Rich learned just enough to get by. At parent-teacher conferences Rich translated for his parents, so they never knew when he was in trouble — no wonder they always thought he was a saint! Rich has always been the hard worker. He had a great career with Boeing and it was through work that he met his wife, Linda. When they married, they had an instant family since she had two boys already. Today they have four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Rich’s hobbies include running and softball, and like most things, he takes it seriously! He once ran all the way from Larkspur to the senior center (I believe he only did that once; it was 16 miles or so). He loves softball and plays on the Senior Castle Rockies team. We joke with him that even if he lost one of his batteries, this Energizer Bunny wouldn’t stop. Rich is positive in every way and he never says no to lending a helping hand - especially to those whom are less fortunate than he is. One of his favorite jobs was helping handicapped children back in Chicago. His sense of duty and service continues, as he currently serves as our Treasurer and drives the Thursday shuttle. He also helps out with Meals on Wheels, so no matter what needs doing; you know you can rely on Rich to get it done! Thank you Rich for all you do… ~ Debbi and the Staff You have chosen a great place to get involved and make great friends, and we are so glad to welcome you: Diane Barrie Jean DiBartolomeo Charles (Chuck) Fritz Velda (Mae) Fritz Bob Giesen Diane Herberg Joan James Carl Jernegan Janet (Jan) Ladd Rita Manning Carolyn Neely Katherine (Kate) Riepenhoff Montez (Tez) Smith Constance (Connie) Ward Sarah Miron is the “New Member Ambassador” for our Center. Wellness Coordinator Castle Rock Senior Center Here we go again – the end to another year is approaching and the start of a new year with new challenges will soon be starting. I reviewed several articles looking at New Year resolutions for seniors. Some were the same old ones: lose weight, eat healthy – things we know we are supposed to be doing. I did find one list that had some practical goals and thought I would share a few of those. Plan to eat at least one nourishing meal a day: if you have lost interest in eating because you live alone or do not want to make the effort, get out of the rut! Invite a neighbor over to share or prepare something to eat over several days. Consider getting help if necessary: If you live alone and do not have family that you see regularly and are finding it difficult to get out to shop, houseclean, do laundry, or get to appointments, consider obtaining a companion or home-helper for a few hours each week. Make a scrapbook about your life: remember the TV show ―This Is Your Life?‖ Tell where you were born, who was in your family, what happened to you as a child, how you met your spouse, etc. Include pictures and other mementos. You have a great story to tell and your family and friends would love to experience it with you through your scrapbook – and no one can tell it like you can. Get your papers/affairs in order: Do you have important papers in a safe place….in the same location? Does anyone else know where to find them? Make a list of them and let someone know. Engage your mind: It is important to keep both your body and mind fit. Regular mental stimulation will help you stay sharp and reduce memory loss. Start a new hobby (have your tried the art classes at the Senior Center?), or teach your hobby to another. Listen to a book on tape if you never have before. If you need help finding something different to do, talk with a friend and maybe you can take on a new challenge together. Life is precious, make the most of every day! Please note: No Lunch & Learn in December. It will be back on the schedule in January 5 ROCKTIVITIES Need Clothing DECEMBER WELLNESS EVENTS Relax ~ Reflexology ~ Repaired? Please let staff know as we have several volunteers who assist us. Janet Beatty is responsible for sending cards out to those who are sick or have lost a loved one. Frank Richards will coordinate visits to members in the hospital, recovery facility or even at home. Thank you! “SeniorzArt” Classes December 2, 6, 9 &16 30 Minute Sessions What is Foot Reflexology? Reflexology is a holistic natural therapy that works on the principle that energy balance will lead to increased vitality and greater enjoyment of life. How does it work? The therapist uses thumbs and fingertips to press special points of the sole and back of the foot. This special pressing stimulates the meridians (energy pathways) to flow. The meridians correspond to the organs, glands and muscles in the body. Blockades can be eliminated to allow energy to flow through the body. This helps with pain management, stress relief, and allergies while promoting relaxation and preservation of your well being. Cost $10 payable at time of service. FOOT CLINICS Cost $25 (Call front desk for appointment) Foot care may be a benefit for some Kaiser Plans: call 303.698.6496 prior to your first appointment to check. This looks to be the most successful event ever, with more than 750 people coming through the doors, not including the 80 outside vendors and all the areas organized by the Senior Center. Final results will be forth coming, but here are the initial income figures: Tables and tables of one-of-a-kind items were Craft Sales: $2777 Silent Auction: $1952 lovingly made and sold by our Seniors, as we have such generous and talented members. Book Sale: $273 Grandma’s Attic: $905 The booth was a huge success. Bake Sale: $1394 Booth’s Sold: $5155 Special thanks to the following individuals who headed up the various booths: Craft Booth: Ruth Klym & Maggie Janick Bake Sale: Joan Marshall Book Sale: Carlene Maher Silent Auction: Bob & Barbara Rotruck VPs of Fundraising & Grandma’s Attic: Dee Thompson & Irene Henning A special recognition also to Gene Gray our balloon artist, Rich Smoski our emcee, Phyliss Tumey our Facility Chairman, and our fabulous and energized Debbi Hayne. Gene Gray and Fran Filyau (above) had as much fun as the kids making balloon animals, and those bowling ball lady bugs (right) were a big hit. A note from the Editor: It’s hard to put into words what I saw and experienced at this 19th Annual Craft Show. I’d been hearing about it since I started working here a few months ago, and obviously had been seeing the crafters diligently gearing up - however, I was blown away by what an undertaking this was, how professionally it was run, and the vast numbers of volunteers who worked to make it come off so spectacularly. I’ve been involved with non-profit organizations for the last 20 years, as a volunteer or paid staff, and I’ve never witnessed anything quite Neither Ruth Klym nor Debbi Haynie lost those gorgeous smiles through it all 14 Baked goods were flying off the tables because “no one can bake like Seniors” who do it from scratch. Rita Manning, Sandy Prichard, Joan Marshall and Dorothy Keilwitz set it all up. Maggie Janick took a moment away from a busy cash box at the craft booth to restock items Phyllis Tumey was there, like many, from sun-up to sun-down. Judy Pollock’s hand painted glasses were too pretty to drink from, but which sold out like this. Usually it’s just a few who carry the load for everyone. Not so here - from baked goods to donations, to helping set up, work the event or teardown, it was a unified, enthusiastic and unbelievably energized and hardworking group of folks I’m very proud to be associated with. It’s all of you who make this so special. Hats off to everyone who made those beautiful items and to each of you who played a role. I hope I can keep up with you!!! We were so impressed with everything and the people were all so congenial. We couldn‟t believe all the little details, like getting your menu and ordering as the bus was going down the road - and having our meals ready as soon as we arrived at the restaurant.” ~ Ken (& Dorothy) Jones “I got to know people better on this trip. It was really all about the people, and they were great. It doesn‟t really matter where we go, we just have fun when we get together like that.” ~ Dee Thompson The Gondola Adventure in Telluride. The views from atop were incredible “I give so much credit to those who planned this; it couldn‟t have been any nicer. We loved having the hospitality room and it was a great way for everyone to visit and talk about the day‟s scenery, which was incredible.” ~ Cay Stender Imagine getting on a bus with more than 30 other people, some you know and some you don’t, realizing that you’re stuck with them for the next 3 days? When a group of members took a weekend trip for the first time in a number of years, no one quite knew what to expect. But ask any of them, and they are ready to go again! The sights were breathtaking, the food and lodging good, Terry and Ben Shipley’s leadership was outstanding, but best of all were the friendships made and grown. The memories will last a lifetime. ―It was a phenomenal trip - I wished we had another day. The group just „gelled‟ and we had so much fun. It didn‟t matter whether you were friends or didn‟t know anyone, whether you were single or a couple, we just all became great friends. The scenery was breathtaking, but it was the people that made the trip.” ~ Irene Henning The Sneffels Range vista. The aspens were at their peak of color The Golf League ended for the season with a great final BBQ lunch at Red Hawk Ridge. Thanks to Phyllis Tumey and Logan Counts for many good memories. Raquel Van Leer and Cloyde Snook danced for the crowd at the New Member Orientation Pancake Breakfast at Applebees Fundraiser. What a delicious morning it was as Jo DeGesu (picture on left) serves up pancakes and as Dolores Larson, Frankie Valdez, Dee Thompson and Dottie Gunner get ready for a breakfast (at right) to benefit the Senior Center.
