FALL/WINTER 2009
“The hermit of Nagarjung had no men above him. From his rocky seat
of meditation he looked up at the dazzling peaks of Lhotse and Ama
Dablam, thrones of mountain gods revered by the Sherpas of Khumbu...
here in the untrodden wilderness of mountains and glaciers, he was closer
to the gods and a state of bliss than he had ever been in a monastery cell.”
- Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf, in “The Sherpas of Nepal: Buddhist Highlanders”
T
hough the mountains have long been a source of religious inspiration for the Sherpa, it wasn’t until the
last century that they began climbing the peaks. Before modern mountaineers arrived Sherpas were
content with looking at the high summits, and enjoying the peace and tranquility to be found in the valleys
and cols.
Today, most climbers won’t even think of summiting a mountain like Mt. Everest without enlisting the help
of Sherpas. Porters, guides, and often quite literally life-savers on the trail, these climbing Sherpa make their
living at the highest altitudes. Without their wisdom and skill most Himalayan expeditions would never
reach their summits.
That’s why Sherpa Adventure Gear is tested by experienced Sherpa climbers and guides, and designed with
their guidance and input. They understand exactly what it takes to survive in some of the harshest weather
on the planet. So you can rest assured every piece is up to the challenge of your next adventure.
As always, the heart of Sherpa Adventure Gear belongs to the Sherpa families we support in Nepal. Since
many Sherpa climbers are gravely injured or lose their lives working in the mountains, we give a percentage
of every sale to programs and organizations like the Sherpa Education Fund that benefit Sherpa children.
And one of our primary goals is also to provide a meaningful future to young Sherpas through training and
employment in our organization.
Our commitment to supporting others extends to the environment as well. So we’re always seeking the latest in eco-friendly fabrics and packaging, and working to reduce our overall shipping and manufacturing
footprint.
The next time you’re off on a quest—whether it’s to bag a peak, get closer to your own personal god, or just
enjoy Mother Nature—take dependable Sherpa Adventure Gear along with our blessings.
Namaste.

FALL/WINTER 2009
SHERPA ADVENTURE GEAR ATHLETES
Lhakpa Rita
LHAKPA RITA SHERPA - One of the world’s elite climbers with 11 successful Mt. Everest summits
Raised in Thame—the hometown of famed Everest climber Tenzing Norgay— Lhakpa Rita Sherpa is on track to be the first Sherpa to successfully climb
the “seven summits” (the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.) He has guided on numerous mountains worldwide and summited Everest 11
times, Cho Oyu three times, Mt. Vinson (in the Antarctica), Denali, Aconcagua and numerous peaks in the Cascades including Mounts Baker and Rainier.
Known as the “Best Sardar in the Khumbu”, Lhakpa Rita is recognized by other mountain guides, Sardars and climbers for his unique expertise and
experience, and is one of only a few Sherpas working as a full-time mountain guide around the world. Lhakpa Rita guides primarily for Alpine Ascents
International and lives in Shoreline, Washington with his wife and children.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Lithang Jacket
Pasang
PASANG LHAMU SHERPA - Mountaineering and trekking instructor for the Nepal Mountain Instructor Association
Born in Lukla, the starting point for most expeditions, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa has always been interested in climbing. However, she didn’t actually start
climbing until 2003, after attending college in Kathmandu.
In four short years Pasang Lhamu has summited Everest from the Tibet side, Yala Peak, Nangpai Gusung and Island Peak. She has also traveled to Italy
and France to take mountaineering courses, and climbed numerous peaks there as well. Today, in addition to working as an instructor and part time
trekking guide, she is the primary care taker of her 14 year old sister. Pasang Lhamu hopes to summit Everest from the south side this spring.
Mingma
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Halka Rain Jacket
MINGMA TENJING SHERPA - Professional mountain and trekking guide
Mingma Tenjing Sherpa started working as an assistant guide to his father during holiday vacations when he was just 14 years old. After attending the
Hillary School in Khumjung, he went on to high school and college in Kathmandu. Though, Mingma has a degree in Physical Science, he has always
wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He regularly climbs Lobutse, Island Peak and Mera Peak. Although Mingma Tenjing would like to climb
higher peaks, his family doesn’t allow him to due to the risk. Recently, Mingma started his own climbing and trekking agency in Nepal called Acclimatize Nepal. Married with no children yet, Mingma and his wife Yangji travel to Europe during the off season to climb and promote their business.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Thyangboche Down Jacket
Nima
NIMA YANGJEE SHERPA - Professional high-altitude long-distance runner
Nima, our youngest Gear Athlete, is an experienced high-altitude, long-distance marathon racer with 11 major races under her belt, including the Everest
Marathon (42 km from Everest Base Camp to Namche), the Annapurna Mandala Trail (240 km), and The Ultimate Trail Race (1,000 km from Kathmandu
to the Dolpa Himal). She regularly places in the top four with several 1st and 2nd place finishes. Just recently she placed 2nd in women’s and 9th over all
in the 300 km Solu Khumbu Trail Marathon.
Nima has been interning in our Nepal office learning the intricacies of our gear manufacturing. She continually captivates everyone here with her verve
and energy, and has proven herself to be a fantastic asset for all of us. She still runs and trains for her next race everyday.
Chhewang Nima
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Vajra Jacket
CHHEWANG NIMA SHERPA - Himalayan alpinist, with 16 ascents of Mt. Everest
Chhewang Nima first reached the summit of Everest as part of an American expedition in May of 1994. Since then, he has been to the summit 15 more
times via both the north and south faces while supporting a variety of expeditions. Chhewang has also summited four other peaks in Tibet and Nepal:
Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, Ama Dablam, and Nosing Khan. On top of his climbing accomplishments, Chhewang spends his summers in Alaska as a yak
trainer. Today he lives in Thamo, above Namche, in the Khumbu Valley with his wife and two children, where he continues to work as a professional

OU DON’T HAVE TO BE A SHERPA to survive—and thrive—in extreme environments. You just need the right clothing…Starting with a

technologies like “intelligent” moisture management fabric, sustainable, odor-repellent bamboo charcoal and eco-friendly, itch-free merino wool
to make base layer clothing you’ll be comfortable in for days on end no matter where your adventures take you.

In Hinduism, Rahu is instrumental in strengthening your
power. This amazing, eco-friendly top is sure to add power to
your next run, ski, bike or climb. Made using a new, high-tech
fabric blend, it evaporates moisture incredibly fast while hollow
fibers in the yarn enhance air circulation to keep you cool as
you heat up. Then, when you cool down, spaces between the
yarn trap warm air to protect you from post exercise chills.
Once you try merino base layers, you won’t
want to wear anything else. So you need to add
these merino bottoms to your cold weather
wardrobe. Naturally temperature regulating,

HE FIRST DOWN PARKA was patented in the US in 1936. Then Jim Whittaker wore one to the top of Everest in 1963 and they quickly became
the standard for mountain adventures. Many things have changed since then—fabrics are lighter and more durable. Synthetic insulation has
come on the scene. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for a jacket that packs extreme warmth into a small package. Every piece of
our insulated clothing has been tested by Sherpas in the bone-chilling weather of the Himalaya. They trust their lives to it…So can you.

A T r i b u t e t o N GAWANG G OMBU S H E R PA
T HE L ITTLE B IG T IGER
I
F CLIMBING MOUNTAINS WASN’T NGAWANG GOMBU’S DESTINY, IT WAS CERTAINLY IN HIS BLOOD. Born in
1936 in Minzu, Tibet, Gombu is the nephew of legendary Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
Though born in Tibet; at age five his family moved to the Khumbu region of Nepal where they settled around Thame with
some of Tenzing’s family. As is common in traditional Sherpa and Tibetan families, Gombu was sent to study to become a
monk. He was meant to stay at Rongbuk Monastery for five years. But conditions were harsh and sometimes brutal, so he
and a friend escaped one cold night and made their way back to the Khumbu. This single action changed the path of his life
forever.
In 1950, the opening of Nepal and slow closing of Tibet caused Everest mountaineers to start approaching the mountain from
the remote Khumbu region where Gombu lived. After years of hearing tales of great Sherpas like his uncle, he was enthralled
by the Swiss attempts on Everest in ’52. So he sought out Norgay on his return trip from the mountain and asked for a job.
The following year Norgay hired him on to the British Everest expedition as a porter and Gombu soon became the youngest
Sherpa to reach 26,000 feet when he carried not one, but two loads to the South Col. This earned him both the Tiger Medal
of the Himalayan Club and the Queen’s Coronation Medal, and he quickly became known for both his strength and sense of
humor.
When Norgay established the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in 1954, Gombu was one of the first Sherpa sent to
Switzerland to train as a climbing instructor. He soon moved to Darjeeling, home base of HMI, where he also continued climbing with other expeditions. His first successful summit was 24,000-foot Sakang. The next year he became the third man in the
world to summit Nanda Devi (24,645 ft.). And he soon became the first man in the world to have climbed Everest twice (first
in 1963 with American Jim Whittaker and again in 1965 with an Indian expedition). A record which would remain unbroken
for almost 20 years!
As Jim says in his memoirs “…Of the three on our rope this day however, I had been drawn particularly to Gombu. Five feet
three in his climbing boots, with a big chest, he weighed just 120 pounds and had a wonderful smile….He had studied to be a
Buddhist monk and spoke several languages well, including English. He had told me he switched to climbing for the money,
but I could see something else in his eyes: that same burning desire to summit that I had. I was delighted to have him as my
rope mate.”
Gombu was appointed Deputy Director of Field Training at HMI in 1965, and succeeded Norgay as Director of Field Training
in 1976. He eventually traveled to the United States to climb Alaska’s Mt. McKinley and has served as an honorary instructor
at Washington State’s Climbing School at Mt. Rainier for more than 17 years.
Besides having Gombu rock in Darjeeling named for him, he is the recipient of many more national and international awards
including India’s highest honor the Padma Bhusan, the Padma Shree, the Arjuna Award Gold medal from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, the Hubbard Medal from National Geographic Society Magazine and the Tenzing Award.
Today, at age 72, Ngawang Gombu is married and still living in Darjeeling where he serves as an advisor for HMI and works
with the Sherpa Buddhist Association, established by Norgay to help those Sherpas who were seriously injured on the mountain, and the families of those who never returned. The love of the mountains continues to shine brightly in his eyes.

N THE MOUNTAINS, THE TEMPERATURE DROPS about four degrees for every 1,000 feet of elevation you gain. High Himalayan villages like
Thyangboche, Pheriche, Lobuche, and Namche Bazaar often don’t even hit 60°F during the day. If you’re going to stay comfortable in a cold climate like
this a toasty fleece jacket is key. Made of the latest synthetics and wool blend fabrics, each of our Thermal Sherpas is versatile enough to transition from

blend that stays warm even when wet, it’s breathable,
stretchy and virtually itch free.
This is not the thick, heavy, scratchy wool you typically
think of in a jacket. Known for its fine, soft texture,
and lightweight warmth, merino has none of the itchy
qualities of regular wools. And it provides exceptional
breathability, moisture management, odor resistance

SOFT SHELL - WOMEN’S
W
HEN CLIMBERS FIRST SUMMITED EVEREST, the clothing of choice was made from itchy wool, gabardine and waxed cotton. Today you
have a variety of options when it comes to staying comfortable in ever-changing mountain weather. One of the most versatile is the soft
shell. Compared to a traditional hard shell, soft shells are warmer, softer, stretchier and more breathable. Most importantly, they work equally as
well as outerwear in all but the hardest rain or as a layering piece when conditions turn cold or nasty.
Padmini Jacket
Nano technology gives the Padmini the most air circulation
of any windproof jacket. So whether you’re climbing up
ice-covered mountains or skiing down them, this amazing,

F YOU’RE SPENDING TIME IN THE KIND OF TEMPERATURES SHERPAS ENDURE day after day, you need more than a just a few layers and
a shell to keep you comfortable. So we asked the late, much-missed Pemba Doma Sherpa—one of two women ever to scale Everest from both

packed size.

uninteresting sub-peaks of larger mountains. To find one without
these characteristics is not only rare, but also alludes to a very
special peak. To find one that is the visual centerpiece of a major
Himalayan valley, the Rolwaling; a peak that hundreds of trekkers
and climbers pass by every year; a peak so prominent, you can view
from its summit six 8,000-meter peaks; a peak that rises over 3,000
meters above the valley’s largest Sherpa settlement – this is extraordinary. This is Kang Nachugo.”
David and Joe made the ascent in alpine style over five days,
summiting on October 17, 2008. Climbing up a dangerous face to
the razor-sharp ridge crest, they persevered through brutal cold
conditions and technical high-altitude climbing to reach the virgin
summit.
Both David and Joe were completely outfitted in Sherpa Adventure
Gear, and after putting the clothing through the ultimate test, they
reported it as exceeding their expectations for ruggedness, durability, and functionality. Many images from their ascent can be found
throughout the pages of this book. For a complete report on their
journey, please visit www.climbnepal.blogspot.com.

T H E S H E R PA G E A R H O U S E
Announcing the Sherpa Adventure Gear Flagship Store!
In 2003, Sherpa Adventure Gear got its start
making down sleeping bags and jackets designed to take climbers to the summit of Everest and back. While we’ve continued to make
products specifically for high-altitude mountaineers, over the years we’ve branched out to
make clothing and outerwear for every stage
of the journey—from the first airplane flight of
your trip to the summit. Now we’re branching
out again.
As this catalog is going to press, our new
flagship store in Kathmandu is already taking shape. This brand new, custom designed
building will include 4,500 square feet of retail
space on two levels filled with both our soft
goods and hard goods for climbing and trekking. It will also house a nine room bed and
breakfast, a terrace restaurant with a grand
view of the mountains, a coffee shop, and a
parking garage to make access easy.

Pertemba Pheriche Raajen Rahu Rajni Advansa® Thermo°Cool Eco™
Made using a new, high-tech fabric blend that combines different types
of fibers to create the ultimate, multi-use garments. Thermo°Cool Eco’s
multi-channel solid fibers evaporate moisture incredibly fast, while hollow
fibers in the yarn enhance air circulation to keep you cool as you heat up.
Then, when you cool down, voids between the yarn trap warm air to protect
you from post exercise chills. Thanks to a polymer made from renewable
resources like corn instead of traditional petrochemicals this high-tech
fabric is also eco-friendly.
Polartec® Power Dry®
An ideal choice next to your skin, Polartec Power Dry is designed to keep
you dry when you sweat thanks to different yarns on either side of the
fabric—one that moves moisture away from your skin, and another that
spreads it on the surface for faster evaporation.
If you’re ever in Kathmandu make sure to stop
in and visit us at our new headquarters in Lal
Durbar Marg, opposite the Palace Museum.
Or better yet, stay the night, enjoy a fine meal,
and use our facilities as your home base. We
look forward to having you as our guest.

Polartec® Wind Pro®
Polartec Wind Pro fabrics are extremely breathable yet provide 4x more
wind resistance than traditional fleece. This is the new “super fleece”
which spans an incredibly wide range of conditions; performs as both outerwear and insulation; and offers exceptional durability. This is a versatile
fabric which can be worn all year long for a variety of activities.
Dry Zone®
Designed specifically for Sherpa Adventure Gear, our state-of-the-art Dry
Zone® “intelligent” fabric is a fast wicking and incredibly fast drying base
layer. And thanks to its high-tech thermal conductivity control, it will keep
you toasty warm in chilly weather, and cool when you—or the temperatures—warm up. Choose this when you want a slightly warmer base layer.
Bamboo Charcoal
Bamboo and bamboo blend fabrics are made from sustainable bamboo
that’s been cooked down to charcoal then spun into fibers that can be woven alone or with other fabrics. Bamboo fibers provide excellent moisturewicking and natural antimicrobial properties, making them an ideal choice
as a base layer in warm weather or during sweat-inducing activities.
Merino wool
High quality merino wool is Mother Nature’s best climate control fabric,
with exceptional moisture-wicking and heat retention abilities, plus natural
antimicrobial capabilities that keep it virtually odor-free even after multiple days of wear. Thanks to the nature soft hairs of the merino sheep, it’s
virtually itch-free to all but the most sensitive skin. And it’s an eco-friendly, renewable resource.
