Snakes are long, skinny animals with no legs.
Snakes look like big worms.
New Zealand
is right here
Snakes live all over the world—in hot
places and cold places. However, if you
live on an island, you may not have seen
a snake. There are no snakes in Ireland or
New Zealand.
Are there snakes where you live?
What questions do you have about snakes?
If you don't hear the answers to your questions,
you may wish to read more about snakes.
There are many kinds of snakes.
Snakes can be big or small.
Some snakes are only about the
size of a pencil. But some snakes
are huge—like the anaconda.
Are all snakes the same size? (No)
(Some are big and some are small.)

Snakes shed their skins because the skin becomes old and worn.
The snake sheds its skin by crawling out of it. This is called molting.
What does a snake do with its old skin? (Sheds it.)
When the snake sheds its skin, what is that called? (Molting)
Snakes have bones, just like people, but snakes have no legs and arms.
Snakes have skeletons that look very different than our skeletons.

Do snakes have bones? (Yes)
People and snakes both have bones.
Do you think a person's skeleton looks like the snake's? (No)
Why not? (We have legs and arms!)
There are more than 2,000 different kinds of snakes! They come in all sizes
and colors. Some snakes are poisonous, but most snakes are harmless
creatures. They are shy and interesting animals!
