Our newsletter will now be printed and mailed once a quarter, with electronic-only supplements on the other months. See more details on page 3. CAM continues to need volunteers. See the last page for open positions. Many key positions are open, and we need your involvement. Finally, see our first on-line survey, details in the “From the Editor” section. This first one concerns Graffiti. Let us know your ideas for future surveys. MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING Henny, as Program Coordinator, is always happy to accept suggestions for people to speak at our Monthly Meeting called to order at 6:50 PM. In attendance were Gatherings. She requests that you do not ask them to speak for a particular month, as that month may alIzzy Akbar, Cherie Dimmerling, Laura Becka, Scott ready be filled. Contact Henny at Vinick, and Henny Lukas-Fierman. programcoordinator@cleveland.us.mensa.org. Guest: Larry Wise, Scholarship Chairman The Archivist has offered to keep a running document Absent: Steve Yates and Jason Tasch. of the ExComm Minutes: This has been completed and The Treasurers Report was submitted. $13,955.75 was sent to the ExComm for feedback. After it is finalized, it will be published on the CAM website. reported as available for CAM use. ExComm Minutes Jan. 4, 2016 Old Business: New Business: Alternate locations for the Monthly Gathering were discussed. After weighing the pros and cons of each location, a motion was made by Henny and seconded by Izzy to hold the March, April, and May Monthly Gatherings at the Flat Iron Café on the last MONDAY of the month at 6:30 PM. Motion passed unanimously. Flat Iron Café is located in the West Bank Flats area of Cleveland at 1114 Center Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44113, across from the Center Street Bridge. This location is not handicap accessible, but arrangements can be made as needed if notified in advance. We are re-looking for a Calendar Editor. The new format is a three-month calendar to be printed in our quarterly newsletter and updated as needed for the online version. Mike Marinis, Graffiti Editor, has offered to get the new editor started. The ExComm meeting will also move to Flat Iron Café, but time (6:30 PM) and day (1st Monday of the month) will remain the same. The special Monthly Gathering date for Saturday, February 13 at 2:00 PM is confirmed. This will replace the MG usually scheduled for the last Wednesday of the month (2/24). Cherie reconfirmed this ‘on location’ event with Dave Peterson for 3D Printing and tour of their facilities. Lunch will precede the tour at Artefino (same place as before the Cleveland Whiskey tour). We still need a Publications Officer to deliver Graffiti to the bulk mailing department, but this will now only be needed four times per year. This person needs to accept delivery via UPS from our printer, band together zip coded envelopes in groups of six or more like codes, put them in USPS bins, and drop them off at bulk mailing on Orange Ave. near downtown Cleveland. This takes a total time of four hours or less. The problem is that the bulk mailing office is only open until 6 PM. Monday through Friday. If anyone can possibly do this, please contact Laura Becka or any of the ExComm members. Larry Wise, Scholarship Chairman, spoke about procedures for requesting information about scholarships. If anyone asks any of the ExComm members, please forward the person’s request to Larry at scholarship@cleveland.us.mensa.org. So far, we’ve only had one person ask, but he was able to provide the I Holiday Party at the Zoo RSVPs are closed. Zoo space and caterer have been paid. Note: the Carousel is open, nformation for them. Since CAM now has a Scholarship Chair, we will be eligible for the national scholarship in but is an additional cost. It is enclosed and heated for the winter. Motion was made by Laura and seconded by 2016-2017. Henny to hold a 50/50 Raffle at the event, to benefit With business concluded, meeting was adjourned. Izzy’s our Scholarship Fund. Motion passed unanimously. iPhone was not available for a time consult, but the meeting definitely ended. 2 Local Chair Izzy Akbar We are a month into the New Year, how are those resolutions going? I know, we're way beyond making New Year's resolutions that we know we're just going to break in two weeks (I'm being optimistic :) ) But when the calendar flips the page on a year, we can’t help but think what we might do differently. Maybe we should call them New Years why-the-heck-nots. As in, “Why the heck not do my taxes before April 15 this year?” How about, “Why the heck not save money now so I'm not in debt from Christmas through June.” (Does anyone remember bank Christmas Clubs?) Or, “Why the heck not actually plan something for Valentine’s Day, rather than stopping at the gas station for prepackaged roses and a generic card?” (So I'm the only one who does that, right?) I am trying to think of the New Year as fresh start, a clean sheet of paper on which to write a new chapter of my life. I'm challenging myself to learn Japanese this year and I'm giving up potato chips. I'm also looking do at least one charity activity other than giving money. I guess I want to really make my years count, rather than just counting years. So now, what is your New Years Why-The-Heck-Not? Send them in and maybe we can share them here. Until next time... From the Editor Welcome to the first Quarterly edition of Graffiti. As reported over the past several months, the CAM ExComm has changed Graffiti to a quarterly publication, with monthly electronic supplements on the off months. The calendar section has been changed to a three-month calendar. In the past we were able to include ECOM events in our calendar, but they do not prepare a calendar that far in advance. You can see ECOM events by logging into the American Mensa website and downloading a copy of ECOM's Braegan. The ExComm minutes are included for January. The May edition will include minutes for February through April. The ExComm is working on a website for meeting minutes so you have more timely access to that information. Other changes include a revised Milestones section, and other minor adjustments. I have been the Graffiti editor for almost two years, and I've never received a "Letter to the Editor." Some recent information shared with all Mensa editors estimates that less than 10% of members actually read the newsletter. Perhaps this is the reason for so little feedback. Whatever the reason, perhaps now is the time for readers to share their thoughts on how we might improve the newsletter. You can write to me at editor@cleveland.us.mensa.org, or take a short on-line survey here: http://goo.gl/forms/UPcStKV9Kn Mike Marinis, Editor GRAFFITI SUBMISSION GUIDELINES The deadline for submission is the first Sunday of the month for the following month’s issue. The editor will consider for publication all materials submitted. Anonymous submissions will not be printed, but names may be withheld upon request. The editor reserves the right to edit any submission for length or clarity. Other Mensa publications are granted permission to reprint any material that does not contain a copyright notice. Attribution to Graffiti and the author are required. A courtesy copy to the Graffiti editor is requested. Written permission to reprint must accompany all copyrighted materials. Electronic format is preferred. A 750 word limit is requested. Please submit items by email to editor@cleveland.us.mensa.org Graffiti accepts prepaid ads from CAM members. Rates per issue: $6/business card; $20/quarter page; $40/half page. For a year of ads paid up front, monthly costs would be reduced to $5/business card; $15/one quarter page and $30/half page. Classified ads for positions wanted are free to members. Opinions expressed in Graffiti are those of the individual authors and do not represent Mensa. In order to ease traffic around their six-story building, their employer has staggered quitting times by floor. The first group quits at 5:00 PM and the final group stops at 6:00. The club members each work on a different floor, and take a different major road home. From this information and the clues below, try to determine each club member’s name (one of whom is Fran), the floor they work on, the street they take home (one of which is Chester Avenue) and the time each leaves work. 1. The six are Danny, Will, the woman from the first floor, the man from the second floor, the one who takes Carnegie Avenue, and the person who leaves at 5:40. 2. The one who takes Telegraph Road home gets out of work 10 minutes after Fran. The worker from the second floor leaves 25 minutes after the person who uses Main Street. Four of the employees are mentioned in this clue. 3. The one who leaves at 5:40 does not share their first initial with any other worker. 4. Lois (who does not work on the third floor) leaves work 15 minutes before the person who drives on Woodward Avenue (who is not Fran). 5. Neither Chuck, nor the worker who drives on Jackson Road, leaves work at 5:50. Will does not drive on Telegraph Road. 6. None of the drivers, except Cathy, drives home on a road that begins with the same letter as their name. 7. The fifth floor (which does not leave at 5:10) departs earlier than the third floor employees, who leave earlier than the first floor. 8. Danny (who is not the one who leaves at 5:25) works two floors above Lois. Program information not yet available. FMI: Program Coordinator Henny Lukas Fierman at programcoordinator@cleveland.us.mensa.org SOLUTION TO FARIER FAMILY FUN Employee quitting times are: 5:00, 6:00 (intro); 5:10 (clue 7); 5:25 (clue 8); 5:40 (clue 1) and 5:50 (clue 5). The one leaving at 5:40 cannot be Chuck, Danny, Will (clue 1), Cathy (clue 3) nor Lois (clue 4) leaving Fran as the 5:40 departure. Clue 2 tells us the one taking Telegraph Rd. leaves at 5:50. The Telegraph Rd. driver cannot be Chuck (clue 5), Will (clue 5), Lois (clue 4) or Cathy (clue 6) leaving Danny as the driver. Clue 1 tells us that Chuck works on the second floor. He does not leave at 5:00, 5:10 or 6:00 (clue 2); thus he leaves work at 5:25. Fran and Lois do not use Woodward Ave. (clue 4), neither do Cathy and Will (clue 6), leaving Chuck taking Woodward. The Main Street driver cannot be Fran or Lois (clue 2) or Cathy (clue 6) leaving Will as the Main Street driver. Clue 2 tells us he leaves at 5:00. Clue 4 now tells us Lois leaves at 5:10. By elimination Cathy leaves at 6:00. Lois doesn’t work on the first floor (clue 7) or the third (clue 4). Using clue 8, Lois’ floor must be the fourth, and Danny’s the sixth. Clue 7 now tells us the fifth floor leaves at 5:00 and the first floor at 6:00. Clue 1 now tells us Cathy uses Chester Ave. and Lois drives on Carnegie Ave. Elimination leaves Fran, who works on the third floor, driving on Jackson Rd. The hidden European soccer great is: Ferenc Puskas (1927- 2006). 8 CAM Member Milestones February - April Birthdays FEBRUARY Thomas R Becker (5) Gregory David Hostelley (10) Samantha Mehall (10) Sesame Delights When Rob and I bought this house, more than 20 years ago, Yvonne called it the party house. It has served that function well; we’ve had lots of great parties here, but it’s time to move to a smaller house with less maintenance. The acre of land that appealed to Rob back then has become as much of a chore as a joy, and we both want to live in a more walkable community; someplace where we can walk or bike to do our errands, as opposed to drive. Since we are determined to sell in 2016, it seemed appropriate to have one last New Year’s Eve party. 3 cups all purpose flour 1 cup sesame seeds 2 cups sweetened shredded coconut 2/3 cup Heath Bits O’Brickle (available at Dorothy Lane Markets) Mix all ingredients with clean hands. Form into 3 to 4 logs, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Remove logs from refrigerator about a half hour before slicing and baking. Slice cookies into ¼ inch thick slices, place on ungreased cookie sheets at least 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees for Invitations were issued, and Mensa friends and others gathered from as far as South Carolina and Tennessee, as well as from the local surrounding areas. We made lots of food and bought a case of bubbly and the party house was rocking from New Year’s Eve until the Monday afterward. A good time was had by all, and no one went hungry or thirsty. For Christmas, I’d found a cookie recipe that Rob’s mom used to make. I knew it was a family favorite, but neither of his sisters could locate their copies. So I made a double batch, and gifted his sisters with both the cookies and the recipe, and froze the rest of the cookies for the New Year’s Eve party, where, once defrosted, they seemed to be consumed with great gusto! Rob’s sisters think this may have originally been a Sarah Moulton recipe. Sesame Delights 1 lb butter, room temperature 1 ½ cups granulated sugar about 12 minutes, until edges are slightly brown. Let cool on cookie sheet for 2 to 3 minutes, then remove carefully with spatula and cool on wire racks. Makes about 5 dozen. 11 WHO’S WHO IN CLEVELAND AREA MENSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Chairman Islam Akbar locsec@cleveland.us.mensa.org Main Proofreader Alan Baltis alanbaltis@thesmartlife.com Far East Coordinator Bill McCullam books@cattermole.com Vice Chairman Cherie Dimmerling vicelocsec@cleveland.us.mensa.org Mediator Colleen Baltis mediator@cleveland.us.mensa.org South Coordinator Your Name HERE Treasurer Laura Becka treasurer@cleveland.us.mensa.org Membership Officer De Freshwater membership@cleveland.us.mensa.org Members-at-Large Jason Tasch excom5@cleveland.us.mensa.org Program Coordinator Henny Lukas Fierman programcoordinator@cleveland.us.mensa.org Henny Lukas Fierman excom2@cleveland.us.mensa.org Publications Officer Your Name HERE postmaster@cleveland.us.mensa.org Steve Yates excom3@cleveland.us.mensa.org Gen-X Group Coordinator Theresa Racz theresa.racz@gmail.com Gen-Y Group Coordinator Your Name HERE WEBSITES / E-MAIL LISTS American Mensa website www.us.mensa.org CAM Hotline (ExComm voicemail) (440) 606-6CAM Scott Vinick excom4@cleveland.us.mensa.org Public Relations Your Name HERE publicrelations@ cleveland.us.mensa.org Region 3 Vice Chair Julia Ashley psibernaut@yahoo.com Scholarship Chair Larry Wise scholarship@cleveland.us.mensa.org Cleveland Area Mensa Facebook group facebook.com/groups/34699233249/ APPOINTED POSITIONS Archivist Laura Becka treasurer@cleveland.us.mensa.org SIGHT Coordinator Your Name HERE East Central Ohio Mensa - website www.ecom.us.mensa.org Testing Coordinator De Freshwater membership@cleveland.us.mensa.org Region 3 - Facebook group facebook.com/groups/71515809887 Calendar Editor Mike Marinis Calendar@cleveland.us.mensa.org CultureQuest Coordinator Mark Koehler markkoehler216@gmail.com Game Warden Alan Baltis alanbaltis@thesmartlife.com Gifted Children Coordinator Your Name HERE Graffiti Editor Mike Marinis editor@cleveland.us.mensa.org Webmaster Bobbie Rooney Webmaster@cleveland.us.mensa.org Cleveland Area Mensa website cleveland.us.mensa.org Region 3 - website www.region3.us.mensa.org Region 3 - Yahoo group groups.yahoo.com/group/AMR3/ AREA/GROUP COORDINATORS Near West Coordinator Lyn Byrd nearwestcoordinator@ cleveland.us.mensa.org Far West Coordinator Kelley Georgiafandis farwestcoordinator@ cleveland.us.mensa.org Graffiti (ISSN 0746-5378) is published monthly by Cleveland Area Mensa, NE Ohio division of American Mensa Ltd., 1129 Corporate Drive West, Arlington TX 76006-6103.
