Why No Bottom Rockers?

Because officers change each year, it bears repea.ng… The Harley Owners Group® logos you wear on your vests and jackets are intended to be worn with only one rocker – a top rocker proudly displaying your local chapter name. Wearing a lower rocker conflicts with the trademark license granted with the Charter. In the US the abbrevia@on “MC” or the wearing of a boTom rocker can have a special social meaning. It is oUen used to designate territory. It is reserved for the “MC” community and its members to designate affilia@on to those mutually recognized in the “MC” world. The vests and jackets of people wearing lower rockers may become objects needed by “prospects” of other (three-­‐
patch) motorcycle clubs as a requirement for membership. Since the very early days there has been an agreement between H.O.G. and many other motorcycle clubs that as long as we do not authorize use of lower rockers, our vests and jackets will not be removed from our members. Norscot, our chapter patch supplier, does not, and will not, supply lower rockers. And, Harley Owners Group won’t authorize a chevron to go below the large H.O.G. patch. This is true even if the “3rd” rocker is not designa@ng a territory and merely a nickname or club name. The use of a lower rocker violates the long las@ng agreement that H.O.G. has had with the motorcycle club community. Remember it’s not only you that you affect by wearing a lower rocker but all of your brother and sisters in H.O.G. Please follow the Charter and respect the above agreement to avoid pu_ng yourself in conflict with those clubs that wear lower rockers. ready to open store in Cave Creek
At the October meeting Philip McKee
mentioned that Buddy will be opening a
boutique retail location in the world famous
Harley® destination Cave Creek on
November 1, 2014. The following Wednesday
a local newspaper, The Foothills Focus,
released the article below.
The store is located at 6812 East Cave Creek
Road in the Plaza de Rico. The store will sell
Harley-Davidson merchandise including
leather jackets, helmets, gloves, H-D jewelry
etc. The store will not sell motorcycles nor will
there be a service department.
We will be riding to the new store on Sunday
Nov. 2nd following the ride to Mamma’s
Kitchen in Dewey. We expect to arrive at the
store around 11 AM so if you can’t join us for
breakfast plan to meet us in Cave Creek and
help celebrate the opening of Buddy Stubbs
Harley-Davidson’s newest addition.

Many of us have heard about the Iron Butt
Association (IBA), http://www.ironbutt.com, but
fewer really are aware of who they are. Long
story short, they are a volunteer organization
that certifies numerous types of long distance
riding challenges, the most well known being
the 1000 mile Iron Butt SaddleSore Ride.
Just as with the ABC's of Touring, this was yet
another fun thing to do while enjoying the wind
in my face as I ride, and likewise, another thing
I learned from fellow Chapter Members Josh &
Linda McKenna, who just completed a
SaddleSore 1000 of their own a couple of
weeks prior.
Ironically, the 1000 mile ride they are most well
known for wasn't even something they dealt
with until 1993 when they took over the
certifications from the California Motorcycle
Touring Association (CMTA). You can learn lots
of cool history and stuff like that on their
website.
I will definitely stick with my observation that a
rider who chooses to join a Local HOG Chapter,
such as Anthem HOG, is far more likely to get
out there and actually ride more often than the
lone wolves who, 'don't like riding with a group'.
Essentially there are different categories of
riding challenges broken down by mileage,
time, location and even some for specific bike
types. The SaddleSore 1000 requires a 1000
mile ride to be completed within a 24 hour
period.

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely times
when a riding alone is all the company I need,
aside from the roar of the hot chrome pipes,
good old classic rock & roll on the radio and the
beauty of God's landscaping handiwork
stretching out before me as far as the eye can
see.
But I really love the social aspect of our HOG
Chapter and knowing there is always someone
crazy enough in this group to accompany me on
just about any kind of riding adventure I can
think of is as comforting as it is cool.

Besides, if you aren't part of a riding club, then
who you gonna brag to about your exploits and
adventures? Who else will really understand
that it is perfectly reasonable to spend
hundreds and hundreds of dollars and weeks
of planning to ride a thousand miles, followed
by weeks of recovery for those of us not in the
best of health, just to get a patch? Did I
mention you get a patch?

just over 50,000 members of the IBA, (plus
hopefully 2 more...).
So I handed fellow Anthem HOG Member
Dennis Vega a map of my proposed 1000 mile
challenge ride at the October Hogs & Dogs. I
told him we were gonna go on a little trip.
Oh... and we were leaving in 4 days!
We used my trusty
GPS system via the
3-M Corporation,
(sticky notes taped to
the windshield), and
some new tracking
software to help verify
our route. It also
served as a sanity
check for our friends
and family who were
able to monitor our
ride in real time as it
plotted out on an online map.

Because this is a certified contest, there is
quite a bit of documentation to complete to
ensure you weren't cheating along your route
and didn't take any shortcuts. Hopefully we
got all of it turned in properly, but it can take a
couple of months to get your certification back
in the mail.
They are a volunteer organization, so
manpower is light and it can take a while to
properly certify your ride. They map everything
out and check your claims against your fuel
receipts and GPS coordinates and the like,
painstakingly ensuring you deserve the award
your challenge pertains to.
Because of the difficulty of the challenges
coupled with the diligence put into certifying
Dennis and I managed to complete our 1000
mile gauntlet in just under 22 hours. We rode
straight through the entire time, only stopping
for fuel where we needed the receipts to
document our route.
I used the Bubbler GPS App on my phone to
update the GPS coordinates as we traveled
and then had them plotted on the
SpotWalla.com webpage. Using a private link,
anyone with that URL could see us moving on
the map and know we were at least still alive,
and track our time, distance, and progress in
general.

We started in
Surprise at 4:30am
and returned home
before 2:00am the
next day. We
traveled through:
Gila Bend, Yuma,
Quartzsite (where
we snuck an ABC's of
Touring photo), Parker,
Lake Havasu, Kingman,
Williams, Flagstaff,
Winslow, Holbrook,
Sanders, St. Johns,
Springerville, Show Low,
Heber, Payson, Camp
Verde, back through New
River & Anthem and back home to Surprise.
We rolled 1023.9 miles on the
odometer during those 22
hours and I am not sure how
much of it I actually remember!
We were so focused on the
goal of the ride, and in
completing it safely, that the
ride was kind of a literal blur of
non-stop throttle and lots of
praying!
darkness. I am glad I took photos of our
adventure so as the pain fades, we can see
some of where we actually went.
I would say that there is certainly as much
mental preparedness as there is practical
preparation and an equal amount of physical
stamina required to tackle this kind of riding.
I am not sure how much longer down the road
my broken body could have taken this kind of
punishment, and am glad to not have waited too
long to take it on.
Let this be an example for the rest of you, not to
put off your goals and riding aspirations for a
later time, because we don't know if we will be
here later, or for how much more time!
We have a great group of riders here at Anthem
HOG, so take advantage of the camaraderie and
let's get out there and ride!

sightseeing, and in true form, well over half of
our ride was under the cover of almost complete

It is almost that time again! As a
reminder - ALL of our local Anthem HOG
Memberships expire at the end of each
year. This is separate from your National HOG
Membership which you renew online or by mail
every year as well, every 12 months from the day
you joined.
Our Local dues are only $24 for the year and need
to be paid by the end of the 2014 year to cover
you until the end of 2015.
These are the rules direct from National HOG so we
must follow them. And yes, we MUST fill out and
sign a new form for every year. This Membership
Form is a legal document and if there isn't a fresh,
un-modified, newly singed form in the file for each
year, then that Member technically is not part of
the Chapter. This would sever you from any
protection, insurance, or legal coverage that
National HOG would otherwise provide.
This form has been updated by HOG National and
is attached at the end of the Newsletter. This can
be mailed to the Dealership to the attention of
HOG Membership, brought to the November HOG
Meeting, handed to me if we are out and about on
a ride, brought to the Christmas Party in
December, or left at the Anthem H-D Dealership in
the HOG Mailbox just outside our room.
Any Members who have not renewed their
Membership by the January Meeting will be
dropped that day from the Chapter and will have to
re-join as a new Member, re-setting your join date.
This is not personal, it is legal and for insurance
and the protection of the Chapter and all of its
Members. There will be no exceptions.

Pledge of Allegiance led by Rory and stated by all.
Rory Kraft – Director: Today we are going to take nominations for officers, not at this time but
later, so please think about who you would like to nominate, and if nominated will you accept.
Thank you. We came in second on the St. Mary’s Food Challenge, all the food is gone, and they
came and picked it up on Thursday. This is the plaque we received (held up plaque), we raised
88K meals for St. Mary’s. There was a check from one of our members for $400.00 after the fact,
but we still would have been second. We will put this plaque out front with the others for all to see.
Question from the members, is this the last year we will have the challenge? Rory responded; I
talked to Sue, the current director of Scottsdale HOG, and she could not say if they will continue as
she will not be the new director and she does not know who will be the director. We started out
with seven (7) chapters, we were down to three (3) this year, and #93 is dropping out as they are
going to support a local food bank Mommas Pantry) near their location. So no matter what we will
continue to collect for St. Mary’s, even if there is no challenge. We are thinking of having a ride to
the food distribution center and help pack food boxes, it’s a good time, and we will go have lunch
somewhere afterword. At the presentation, Jerry from St. Mary’s provided us with some insight
into the food bank. Their buying power is so great that’s how $1.00 buys 7 meals, an example he
gave was peanut butter, if you buy in the store its $2.00 or more a jar, and they buy a truck load for
$.38 a jar. This year they will provide 70 million meals in Arizona, and they have for the past three
years, and they could provide more if they had it.

Jim Osborn – Assistant Director: Anyone who wants or needs a name tag please let me know,
they are $6.00 each and I will have it ready by the next time I see you on a ride, or the next
meeting.
Jean Miller – Treasurer: Report as of End of September, we have $8,231.79 in the bank. In
October we wrote a check to St. Mary’s for $1527.36. That’s just about the same amount we had
last year, so we are on track with our monies.
Don Montrey – Editor: Next news letter out the first week of November, I would like to thank
all of you who have sent me an article in the past, I have one more news letter and you will have a
new editor. I want to thank you for all of your help.
George Sherman – Photographer: I haven’t ridden for the past two months due to eye surgery,
so I haven’t taken any pictures, and I have missed the rides and trips, but I’m still around, and am
back riding a little now.
Kim Kuharske - Activities Officer: Tomorrow we are going to the Mining Camp Restaurant in
AJ, Rory will be Road Captain, meet McDonald’s at 8:30 AM KSU 9:00 AM. Next Saturday we
are riding to the Ranch House in Yarnell, Road Captain is Geoff, meet McDonald’s 7:00 AM KSU
7:30 AM. Sunday we go to Filly’s Roadhouse, Road Captain is Jeff, meet at McDonald’s
8:00AM KSU 8:30 AM. Have you all booked your rooms for the November 22nd ride to Parker?
We have rooms at the Blue Water Resort & Casino in Parker. You may call them or book online,
but I understand they are filling up. We are going to have diner in Lake Havasu, so it will be a
nice time. The restaurant is on the calendar for your information. Please RSVP to Kim so we have
a count of riders.
I have a signup sheet for the Christmas Party here today, the cost is members $10.00 and Plus 1’s
$20.00. We will have a choice of Prime Rib or Chicken. There will be a flyer with the Chapter
News letter, with selection choice, time, place, date for your to send you money in or bring it to
the next HOG’S and DOG’S.
Rory Kraft – Director: I want to welcome back our snowbirds; The General and Norma, John
and Maggie, Dave and Deloris, good to have you all back.
Rory showed the idea #93 had for condiments and we are going to emulate them and build our
own, but do it better. Rory showed a picture and concept drawing to the members.
We have a new Road Captain, Rodney Benner, he led a ride to Mt. Lemmon with me and he was
sweep the other day, he will do a good job for us. As I have said in the past, we need more Road
Captains, we are a riding chapter so if we have more ride captains each one will only need to do
two per quarter. So if you are interested please see me after the meeting today and we will get
started on the process.

Derrick Ray Ellis - Safety Officer: Continuing with our 2014 safety theme, Safety Awareness, we
have today KIRK from the service department to discuss and show the proper pre-ride checklist,
which we all perform before each ride, right! Kirk took all the members through the proper checklist
for pre-ride inspections, and answered questions from the members. Special note is tire pressure, as
the weather changes, cooler now; your tires loose air and should be checked before every ride and
filled if necessary. While you are doing this check for depth of tread which will tell you if it’s time
for new tires. Kirk took all the members through the list very, very effectively.
Phillip – Buddy Stubbs Marketing: Hello all, today we have a bean bag toss for everybody, so try
your skill and see what you can do to get a prize. We are also out at the Tap Haus in Cave Creek for
the Bike Oktoberfest this weekend. Then next week end at Phoenix we have the Wagon Wheel for
pet adaption. We will have specials for your new pooch so check us out. Have any of you heard we
are opening a new store in Cave Creek, around 500 sq ft, retail clothing only, no bikes. Where, just
east of the Hideaway, not to the Tap House. We will have site specific wear. New things to come so
please come and check it out. Award points will apply in the new store.
Next month, we will have Boot Camp, Team Arizona, will be here along with the JUMP START too
practice shifting and things. So if you know anybody who is thinking about starting riding please let
them know about this great event. Thanks.

John Valentine – Membership officer: We have 128 members, and just a reminder, our expire at
the end of the year. In the past we have been very lax on getting you all signed up and paid, and
have let it ride; however, this will not be the case this year. You will have until the first meeting in
January to get in your membership application along with your annual dues. After that you will be
dropped from the membership.
All national members get the HOG magazine, and I ask that you bring in your copy after you have
read it as I give them out to prospective members. They are a great tool to get people who do not
know HOG interested so please don’t forget. Of course we remove the names and mailing
information before we have them available.
John as some questions, looking for answers from the members. Where are the largest cranberry
growers in the US: Answer: Wisconsin. The year Harley introduced the first Trike. Answer: 1913 it
was called the 2 in 1. This had two wheels in from and one in back. John also brought up storing
items with batteries, don’t as they will leak in your units and destroy what you have. So remove the
batteries.
Last note: Zombie survival tips for the month: Water, if you don’t have, look for areas where you
have some you can use in an emergency, like the toilet tank. That’s clean water in there. If you have
a pool, just boil the water prior to drinking. Fish Tanks, a great source. Should you need to have
water these are great sources. Don’t forget to get your reward card scanned, see me.
One more item, opportunity ride to C2 Tactical an
indoor gun range, those interested please raise your
hands. OK I will have additional information on
this in the very near future.

tee shirt nostalgia
like many others i have tee shirts from most h-d dealers I have
visited. the oldest from 1997 when i bought my fat boy but i
honestly can’t recall the latest one. maybe i need to do more
destination rides?
My wife has a T-Shirt life span criteria; If it has more
than two visible stains it’s history. This has proven to
be my undoing with some of my everyday apparel.
So the other day I was going through my T-shirts
looking for ones that may fit the trash can criteria
and thought I should also check that pile of HarleyDavidson shirts that have mysteriously multiplied
over the years. I didn’t get too far because each one
brought back memories.
Hollister Harley Davidson: I was working in the
Bay Area of California and
decided to take a ride to the town
made famous for “outlaw biker
types” in 1947 by an over
zealous photographer. The shirt
I liked was only available in a
medium and at that time I was
anything but a medium. I
bought it anyway because of
the skull motif which was then
a new design. One of only two
shirts never worn.
Dudley Perkins, San Francisco, CA: One of the
oldest H-D dealers in the U.S. This shirt
will always be tied to The FOG HOG
chapter’s Streets of San Francisco
Poker Run; In my opinion the best
poker run I have participated in. Who
would have thought a poker run entirely
within a major city would be so much
fun.
Zion Harley Davidson, Washington, Utah: This
shirt always reminds me to make sure your
headlights work before you drive into Zion NP
1930’s tunnel with no lighting except the openings in
the wall. Luckily I was riding “sweep” in a two bike
group. I actually had to run through the tunnel w/o
lights twice. Our hotel and the H-D dealer were on
opposite sides of the park.
Big Moose Harley-Davidson Portland,
Maine: The first big trip my wife and I
took on our own. Portland Maine was the
first stop on the way to a Canadian
National Rally on Prince Edward Island.
4 days to get there, 3 day rally, 2 days to
return and only one argument. Guess on
which part of the trip that occurred. We
still laugh about it…at least I do.
Yosemite Harley-Davidson - Merced, CA: A
reminder of another great trip with just my wife. We
actually managed to get a room for 3 nights in the
park by simply
asking at the
hotel desk. We
had reserved a
room about 4
miles from the
entrance but it
was still a
good distance
from that
entrance to the
valley itself.
Having to do that
ride twice a day,
at least one in the
dark, was not
something I looked forward to. Bottom line; it never
hurts to ask.
Battlefield Harley-Davidson - Gettysburg, PA:
Battlefield H-D sponsored the Pennsylvania H.O.G.
Rally for at least two years. Gettysburg is still a
pretty small town and most hotels
are located very close to the

shirt is a PK Knit which prompted
my friend Steve to note that “men
don’t wear PK knit.” My wife
picked it out for me so I do occasionally wear it.
Las Vegas Southern Nevada: This is a shirt that
comes from a
store I didn’t visit. It
was given to
me by a friend

belonged to at
the time. The front
says “Fat Boys
Rule”. To this day I
don’t know if
he got it because I
ride a Fat Boy
or because I was
pushing 200 lb’s. at the time.
Moscow Harley-Davidson, Russia: The 2nd shirt
that has never been worn; also the 2nd not
purchased by me in the store. My boss of bosses at
an architectural firm where I was working brought it
back for me from his vacation in eastern Europe. It
was the first gesture of its kind in 40 years of
working.
I guess I’ll go back and sort through more
shirts looking for ones to cull. Maybe the one
from 1997…Nah!

I agree that the Sponsoring Dealer, Harley Owners Group® (H.O.G.®), Harley-Davidson, Inc., Harley-Davidson Motor Company, my
Chapter and their respective officers, directors, employees and agents (hereinafter, the “RELEASED PARTIES”) shall not be liable
or responsible for injury to me (including paralysis or death) or damage to my property occurring during any H.O.G.® or H.O.G.®
Chapter activities and resulting from acts or omissions occurring during the performance of the duties of the Released Parties,
even where the damage or injury is caused by negligence (except willful neglect). I understand and agree that all H.O.G.® members
and their guests participate voluntarily and at their own risk in all H.O.G.® activities and I assume all risks of injury and damage
arising out of the conduct of such activities. I release and hold the “RELEASED PARTIES” harmless from any injury or loss to my
person or property which may result from my participation in H.O.G. activities and EVENT(S). I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS MEANS
THAT I AGREE NOT TO SUE THE “RELEASED PARTIES” FOR ANY INJURY OR RESULTING DAMAGE TO MYSELF OR MY
PROPERTY ARISING FROM, OR IN CONNECTION WITH, THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR CHAPTER DUTIES IN SPONSORING,
PLANNING OR CONDUCTING SAID EVENT(S).
WAIVER OF RIGHTS UNDER STATE STATUTES
I further agree to waive all benefits flowing from any state statute which would negate or limit the scope of this Release and
Indemnification Agreement including, but not limited to, Section 1542 of the California Civil Code which provides:
“A general release does not extend to the claims which the creditor does not know or suspect to exist in his favor at the
time of executing the release, which if known to him must have materially affected his settlement with the debtor.”

Anthem Harley-Davidson. The Anthem HOG Chapter
meets at 10:00 a.m. on the 3rd Saturday of every
month at the Buddy Stubbs Anthem Dealership. The
Buddy Stubbs dealership is located at 41715 North
41st Drive near the Anthem way exit of I-17. Visitors
are always welcomed. Come on by! We currently have
in excess of 125 members. The Chapter has
designated St. Mary’s Food Bank as the charity
actively supported by the membership. We are a
chapter that rides often, where knowledge and skills in
safe motorcycling are gained and we forge long-lasting
