Dear Colleagues,
Now is an exciting time to be a part of KMTA.
We have many opportunities for enrichment
coming up. On February 24th, KMTA will be
hosting several sessions at the KMEA In Service
Workshop. There will be a recital featuring the
winners of the KMTA Capitol Federal State
Auditions, as well as sessions focusing on using
movement in our studios to promote active musicmaking and wellness among our students led by
Dalcroze clinician Mary Dobrea-Grindahl.
The MTNA National Conference will be in
Austin, Texas March 25th – 29th. This
is a wonderful opportunity to expand
your knowledge base and meet
teachers from across the country.
KMTA’s next conference will be in
Topeka on September 22-23, 2006. I
encourage you to contact me or ShiaoLi Ding to tell us what you want to see
at a state conference.
Dates for Music Progressions are listed
in this Update. Music Progressions is
a great non-competitive event that provides a total
evaluation of your students’ progress as well as
providing an excellent studio curriculum guide.
KMTA will begin a major fundraising drive this
spring. The funds raised will be used to support
scholarships, auditions, and other KMTA projects.
If we all join together on this project, we can bring
great things to our students and our associations.
A strong financial base ensures a strong future for
KMTA.
Next fall, KMTA’s auditions will see an
expansion in some districts to include a nonmemorized performance festival. This is a great
way to introduce your students to the audition
process. I also encourage you to check out the
existing tracks, as they may fit your students better
than you think.

lately, you’ll see that it’s being completely redone.
The new site will be accessible to all without a
password, and we will all be listed in the teacher
directory. This will help other teachers and

I’ll close with thanks to all of those who made the
fall conference and fall auditions a success. I saw
many happy teachers at the conference and many
happy students at the auditions. Thanks also to
Southwestern College and Pittsburg State
University for hosting these events. I would also
like to thank all of you for being a part of KMTA
and sharing your musical gifts with children
across Kansas.

KMTA Sessions at the KMEA In-Service Workshop

KMTA Sessions at the KMEA In-Service Workshop will take place in Room 101 at Century II in
Wichita, KS on Friday, February 24, 2006. In addition to a KMTA Student Chapters panel discussion and
our annual KMTA Honors Recital, two sessions on eurhythmics for pianists and music educators will be
offered by clinician Mary Dobrea-Grindahl from Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music.

KMTA Student Chapter Meeting: How To Survive With A Brand New Music Degree will be the topic
discussed by a panel of recent graduates working in various music fields. KMTA Student Chapters

Small Spaces, Big Possibilities: Using Dalcroze Eurhythmics in Your Classroom and/or Studio The
principles of Eurhythmics can be applied and taught in any kind of space – large, small, spacious, or

KMTA Composer Commissioning Project
Last October’s KMTA conference featured a wide variety of interesting events; I enjoyed mingling with
conference-goers and attending the clinics and performances. As composer commissioning chair, I
especially enjoyed the process of commissioning a new work and coordinating its premiere at the
conference. Composer Craig Weston, professor of music theory and composition at Kansas State
University, brought to this project an extraordinary amount of experience. His original composition
Glancing Spirals was written for a trio – violin, clarinet, and piano – of superb musicians also on the KSU
faculty. The premiere of Glancing Spirals took place on Saturday, October 29, 2005, in Messenger
Recital Hall at Southwestern College. Following a very musical performance of the work, the composer
and performers answered questions about the compositional process, sources of inspiration, and details
about writing for specific instruments. It was both entertaining and informative to see this project come
to fruition, and I look forward to continuing with it next year.

The following chapters applied for KMTA Mini-Grants by the October 1st deadline. KMTA had a total of
$1700 to be awarded. The announcements were made at the KMTA Fall Conference, Oct. 28, 2005, in
Winfield, KS. The descriptions have been included to encourage/inspire other events in different
Associations.

Project: “Scaling Up to LATCH-KEYBOARD” (a
new music program for 4 & 5 year old pre-schoolers at
the Day Care Center of the Salvation Army of Topeka)
Description: This program is designed to begin June
1st and last for 10 weeks, meeting 4days/week for one
hour each day. The participating preschoolers will be
better prepared for entering kindergarten and can also
feed right into the LATCH-KEYBOARD PROJECT,
serving students aged K-12. One professional music
educator and one assistant (a music student from a local
university) would teach the small group classes. Some
of the children are considered at-risk in an economic
and sociological sense.

Project: Multi-Piano Concert
Description: The event offers two one-hour concerts
featuring 36 performers playing 18 grand pianos,
simultaneously performing duet repertoire under the
direction of a conductor. The concert repertoire offers
15 performances covering levels of piano study from
Late Elementary to Advanced.

Description: Students will perform ensemble music at
their level of proficiency on 8-9 pianos onstage. This
will give piano students an ensemble experience and
bring the community the joy of Christmas music.

Description: The project is to prepare students for
Music Progressions in a carnival atmosphere. Students
earn points toward prizes for memorized pieces played

Project: Piano Alive! (working title)
Description: Inspired by a vision of educating
WMMTA teachers to encourage creativity in our
students through jazz and improvisation, WMMTA
sponsored a 2-day concert and Jazz workshop featuring
Willie Myette on 9/23/05. This will be a follow-up
festival in March 2006 for our students to perform their
new skills and inspirations.

Project: Studio Festival Extravaganza!
Description: Students will receive a 15-minute minilesson with a clinician, participate in, or observe,
several master classes, play organized music games and
perform in a recital. Two parent sessions will also be
held.

Project: Piano tuning for Girls’ Recital
Description: On alternate years a Boys or Girls
Recital is given in Shafer Art Gallery at Barton
Community College. This gives the students a recital
experience across several studios and brings public
attention to piano study.

MUSIC PROGRESSIONS: A Comprehensive Musicianship Program
Music Progressions is a noncompetitive program designed to aid teachers in teaching
musicianship to students at all levels, regardless of age. The curriculum is divided into ten levels. At
each level, students are required to demonstrate proficiency in performance, music terminology, rhythm
and pulse development, scales and chords, sight-playing, written theory, and ear-training. Coupled with
the curriculum is an annual test sponsored by KMTA local associations and/or groups of KMTA teachers.
The test provides a music event evaluating each student’s accomplishment of his or her level.
Many teachers enroll students in Music Progressions because it gives all students an opportunity
to participate, whether they study music as a hobby or aspire to the music profession. It is also open to
students of all ages. Students may enter the program at any level. Participation is not based on ability,
on year in school, or years of music study. Instead, students enroll based on the level of the Music
Progressions curriculum they are able to attain.
The Music Progressions handbook is a detailed listing of the requirements of each level. To
order a handbook, send your request and a $10.00 check payable to KMTA to Pat Ziegelmeier, KMTA

We are gearing up for a great spring with Music Progressions events scheduled all over the state.
Included in this issue of the KMTA Update is a registration form for teachers to complete and return with
their entry fees. Teachers should submit one form per student, but please submit one check for the fees
for all students you enroll in the event. Send your registration(s) to the event chair; entries should be
postmarked one month before the event date unless otherwise noted. Contact the chair(s) listed below if
you have any questions about where to send your registrations. If your event is not listed here, or for
further information, you may contact Nancy Blockcolsky, KMTA Music Progressions co-chair, by email:
nlblock@kansas.net or by phone: (785) 468-3381. Teachers are encouraged to send with students a
card listing the student’s performance and listening times, level, repertoire, scales, chords & cadences
prepared, as well as the terms the student will define (for Levels 1-3). This will aid both the student and
the facilitator and will help the event run smoothly.

Important Information

Students—please make checks payable to your teacher. Teachers—make one check
payable to KMTA for total amount of students and give to your Music Progressions
chairperson.
Levels 1-10 will all be scheduled for 30 minutes with the Facilitator. This includes:
Performance, Music Understanding and Vocabulary, Functional Skills, and Options.
Written Theory (all Levels) and Listening (Levels 3-10) will be scheduled separately.

Certification Information
MTNA Professional Certification
Certification is a process that validates an individual’s qualifications for a specific field of professional
practice. It demonstrates to employers, clients, and peers that which the individual knows and is able to do.
It signifies commitment to continued excellence in professional practice. In addition, it increases visibility,
builds credibility, provides a goal for personal professional achievement, and validates expertise for the
individual and to those outside the field.
The MTNA Professional Certification program exists for teachers who teach music to students of any age
level in private or group settings. The program is based upon a set of five standards defining what a
competent music teacher should know and be able to do:
Standard I: Professional Preparation
Standard II: Professional Teaching Practices
Standard III: Professional Business Management
Standard IV: Professionalism and Partnerships
Standard V: Professional and Personal Renewal
Upon fulfillment of these standards, applicants are granted the MTNA Professional Certification credential
with the designation, Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM). The credential and designation are
granted without bias, discrimination, or favoritism between MTNA members and/or non-members or any
other arbitrary differentiation. In order to maintain the MTNA Professional Certification credential and
designation, NCTM must continue fulfilling the program’s standards through the renewal process.
The MTNA Professional Certification program is objectively administered in a uniform manner to ensure
fairness, accuracy, validity and integrity. Due process for reconsideration and reinstatement is included in
the program for certification candidates, renewal candidates and for those who already hold the MTNA
Professional Certification credential.

Applications Are Easier!
Applying for MTNA Professional Certification has just been made easier with the availability of fillable
forms on the MTNA Certification Website. Applicants may now go to the Website, bring up the
appropriate forms, type in the information requested and print them out for submitting to MTNA. The
forms are available for applicants seeking initial certification as well as for those seeking renewal of
certification. This is much easier for applicants than completing the forms by hand and forces the “old
typewriter” into even deeper obsolescence. Evaluators will find fillable forms much easier to read. To
check out this new service provided by MTNA, visit the MTNA Certification website at

New Certification Examinations
Three new Certification Examinations have been completed that meet the requirements for fulfilling
Standards II, III and IV, bringing all documents pertaining to the Certification Program in line with the
MTNA Professional Certification Standards.
These exams will test candidates in all of the twenty-one performance areas in which MTNA
Professional Certification is offered, and will be used on a predetermined rotation plan. A different exam
will be provided for those who do not pass the first time.
The Examination will be evaluated on the basis of PASS/FAIL for each of the three Standards (II, III &
IV). Only the Standard(s) that results in FAIL will require retesting.
Supporting materials and documents pertaining to the Certification Examination have been revised. In
particular, the STUDY GUIDE reflects the new evaluation guidelines. The new examinations are
formatted in the following manner:
■ Standard II: Sections A, B and C
■ Standard III: Sections A and B
■ Standard IV: Sections A and B
Answering one question from each of the seven sections will be required. The STUDY GUIDE contains
a sample question from each section that reflects the subject matter of its contents.
Application Time Limit Policy
At its July meeting, the MTNA Board of Directors approved the following policy regarding the two year
time limit for completing the certification process:
“The MTNA Professional Certification process must be completed within a two-year time limit
from the date the application is received at MTNA Headquarters. If the process is not completed
within two years, the applicant may request, in writing, a single one-year time extension, after
which, an application extension fee of $100.00 will be assessed.”
The above policy replaces the former one found in the Application Packet’s FAQ that read:
“Is there a time limit for becoming certified once I have sent my initial application and fee?
Yes: you have two years from the date of application. Candidates exceeding this time limit will be
assessed a new application fee.”
The new policy allows candidates who encounter extenuating circumstances during the two-year
certification process to request, in writing, a single one-year extension before being assessed an
application extension fee.
KMTA Membership – It’s more affordable than you think!

Have you ever stopped to figure out how much your KMTA membership costs you per lesson? I have. A
teacher with 10 students teaching 40 weeks a year can cover their KMTA membership by charging an
extra 25 cents per lesson. Here’s what that quarter buys you:
1. Networking – KMTA provides an opportunity to
meet and exchange ideas with teachers from
across the state.
2. Music Study Awards, Studio Festivals, and
Music Achievement Awards – These MTNA
programs are aimed at the “everyday” music
student.
3. Conferences – MTNA’s national conferences are
fabulous. KMTA’s conferences bring a slice of
this to Kansas at a reasonable cost.
4. American Music Teacher magazine and Update
newsletter contain informative articles as well as
updates about our activities.
5. Professional certification – The exams to become
professionally certified have been revised of late
and are appropriate for any teacher teaching any
level of student.
6. Student competitions – Both MTNA and KMTA
offer competitive auditions for students. Many of

these competitions offer cash prizes to students.
KMTA also offers Music Progressions, a noncompetitive comprehensive student evaluation.
State affiliates and local associations – This is the
level at which you will receive the most direct
benefits from MTNA. Local associations across
Kansas provide creative opportunities for both
teachers and students.
Professional advice about zoning and taxes from
MTNA.
Grant opportunities – MTNA offers teacher
enrichment grants and local association grants for
a variety of activities. KMTA offers local
association grants. The KMTA application
process is simple and very nearly guarantees
some money for your local association.
Professionalism – Parents and students appreciate
your belonging to an association that provides
education for you and opportunities for them.

2006 MTNA National Conference in Austin, Texas,
March 25–29
The 2006 Music Teachers National Association Conference will take place March 25–29 in Austin,
Texas, at the Austin Convention Center.
Legendary pianist Van Cliburn will give the keynote speech at the opening session on Saturday,
March 25, as more than 2,000 music teachers from all across the country will converge on Austin to
participate in more than eighty professional workshops, sessions, industry showcases and master classes. In
addition, the conference features evening recitals, performed by internationally acclaimed artists, all of
which are free and open to the public.
Music Teachers National Association is a nonprofit organization of independent and collegiate
music teachers committed to furthering the art of music through teaching, performance, composition and
scholarly research. Founded in 1876, Music Teachers National Association is the oldest professional music
teachers’ association in the United States.

MINUTES OF THE KANSAS MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
FALL BOARD MEETING

The fall meeting of the KMTA board of directors was called to order by President Linda Featherston at
7:15 p.m. following the board dinner and introductions.
Pat Ziegelmeier, executive secretary, presented the financial, membership and MTNA Foundation reports.
Reports were accepted as presented.
Tim Shook, immediate past president, shared an exhibit contract with the board and discussed plans on
how to get more exhibitors at our conferences. After various ideas were discussed about incentives and a
link on our website, Tim asked that board members submit email suggestions to him before the spring
board meeting.
Chris Schmitz, vice-president for conference, welcomed board members to Winfield and
Southwestern College. He and Tim Shook have worked together on the conference details.
Pat Thompson, vice-president for associations, spoke to the board about her efforts to contact all local
associations. She wants the activities of the local associations to be printed in the Update so groups can get
ideas from each other. She feels that communication with local associations has been strengthened this
year, and efforts will be continued to build an active working system in the state.
Concerns were brought up about the fact that several members of the Hutchinson local association as well
as their president are not KMTA members. This will be addressed later.
Vice-President for Auditions, David Tauscher, mentioned that a new track of non-competitive auditions is
being considered. Nancy Blockcolsky asked for board input on making revisions to the Music
Progressions Curriculum Guide. Board consensus was that Nancy and her co-chair, Virginia Houser,
should go ahead with improvements as they deem necessary.
In the area of public relations, Melissa Falkner recommended that we not have a booth at the KMEA InService Workshop this year. The board was in agreement. Julie Watson, Update editor, announced that
the deadline for articles for the newsletter is November 25th. Linda Featherston announced that Reena
Berger will be taking over the chairmanship of the outstanding teacher awards.
Trilla Lyerla presented a plan for the KMTA sessions at the KMEA In-Service in Wichita. The clinician
will be Mary Dobrea-Grindahl and the title of the sessions will be “Eurythmics for Pianists and Music
Educators”. Cost for this will be approximately $1,000. Since we haven’t paid for a clinician for these
sessions in recent years, it’s not a budget item. However, after discussion on this, Chris Hepp moved that
we go ahead and pay for the clinician; Tim Shook seconded the motion, and it carried.
Sharon Kriss, Advocacy Chair, encouraged members to talk to legislators and anyone we can to promote
the importance of music.
In other business, David Tauscher moved that KMTA raise the mileage rate we pay judges to whatever the
IRS allows as the mileage reimbursement rate. (At the present the IRS allows 48.5 cents and we are only
paying 32 cents.) Chris Hepp seconded the motion, and it passed.
David Tauscher also moved that we pay motel room costs for audition judges who drive a distance to reach
the audition site. Sally Buxton seconded the motion, and it carried. Room reservations will be made by
the audition chair. After more discussion, Chris Hepp moved to amend the motion to allow one night of
lodging for one day of adjudication for any judge driving over an hour to the auditions. Cheryl Metcalf
seconded the motion, and it passed.
Becky Dudrey requested that state auditions be at a central location and moved that KMTA set Wichita as
the permanent home of the state auditions. Judy Plagge seconded the motion, but it failed to pass. After a
lengthy discussion, David was charged with trying to centralize and equalize opportunities in the best
possible ways.
In regard to the possibility of a new audition track for hobbyists, Sally Buxton suggested that District 6 try
this as a local event. Chris Hepp felt it should be statewide and that the additional audition track should be
offered in all our districts. After discussion, Sally Buxton moved that a non-competitive KMTA district
festival be done at the discretion of each district. Time and location will be determined, and guidelines will
be standardized. The motion passed.
Linda Featherston announced that Rick Lucas no longer wants to do our website, and the technology
committee has checked into some other possibilities. Melissa Falkner moved that we pursue a contract
with Handmade Designs to do a website for us for a one-time fee of $1,600 and $100 per year to continue
and update the website. Cheryl Metcalf seconded the motion, and it passed. The tech committee will
make arrangements.
The board then moved to another room for Chris Hepp to make a presentation on hiring Anne Johnson as
part-time KMTA fundraising director. The fundraising sub-committee members, Chris Hepp, Linda
Featherston, Judy Plagge and Tim Shook, submitted a motion recommending that Anne Johnson be hired
on a part-time basis. After more discussion, board members voted to pass the motion.
The meeting adjourned at 11:30 p.m.
