see just how much can be done in 5
minutes or 10 minutes. The student's
attitude changes from feeling crummy for not practicing to feeling confident about what he/she can do.
2007 is the year to make your time
count.

national officers. Read about the
Slate of Officers in your AMT Magazine. You can either mail in your
ballot or go on line to vote—casting
your ballot will take you less than
30 seconds.
The days are getting longer. They
are??!! Well, actually no . . . there
are still 24 hours in a day; no more,
no less. We all get handed the same
allotment of time each day. We are
not handed the same looks, the same
talents, or the same intelligence; but
we are given an equal 24 hours each
day. What do we do with those 24
hours?
I was just comparing my 2006 calendar with my new 2007 calendar.
The 2006 calendar looks like I had an
impossibly busy schedule and the
2007 calendar is a blank slate; well,
almost a blank slate. Where will the
time go? How can I make my time
count?
The amount of time we have has a
lot to do with our attitude. Have you
ever noticed how children can rant
and rave about brushing their teeth
or cleaning their room? They can
choose to fuss around for an hour or
just do it and go on to something
else. I catch myself debating whether
I want to exercise. I stare out the
window; diddle around; 15 minutes
later I realize I could have been exercising for that 15 minutes. We teachers can spend time at a lesson lecturing about the importance of prac-

• Plan ahead. Mark your calendars
“Professional Enrichment” for June
25-29, 2007. Organize a chapter
project of car pooling to Pullman
for the WSMTA June Conference.
This will be an unforgettable opportunity for you as a teacher, a
musician, an individual to grow,
learn and make lifelong friends.
(Not to mention experiencing the
BEST ice cream ever at Ferdinand's.)
Conference Co-Chairs
Michelle Mielke and Karen Savage
are lining up a fabulous array of
sessions.
Come hear Douglas
Humpherys, our guest artist and
the gold medal winner of the
inaugural Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. You
will come away from the conference energized and refreshed.
There's no better way to spend
your time that last week in June!
• Decide where you want to help
in your chapter and in WSMTA's
many programs. Offer your time
and energy. We are a non profit
service organization, and as such,
each one of us has a privilege of
serving. When we all pitch in we
accomplish our goals and our organization stays strong.
Okay, so we can't talk about making good use of time without talking
about making good use money. Now
that it's tax time you may be wishing
you had made a couple more donations last year. Here's your chance
for this year: Right now, take 3 minutes of your valuable time and write
a check to “MTNA Foundation
Fund” in any amount.
Write
“MTNA Fellow Marcile Mack” on
the check memo and mail it to:
MTNA Foundation Fund, 441Vine
St., Ste. 505, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
Marcile Mack, Emeritus Music faculty member of Seattle Pacific University was a leader in WSMTA for
many years through her work on the
WSMTA Education Board, as a regular state adjudicator, workshop presenter, teacher and mentor. When
$1,000 has been raised in her name
MTNA will bestow this distinguished award to Marcile. Don't delay;
write your check today.
come to attend.
WSMTA will present a Recital of
Washington’s Outstanding Students
on Saturday, March 24th at 12:00
noon in the high school auditorium.
These students have been selected
from the November Washington
State MTNA Performance Competitions and the Outstanding Artist
Competitions.
Artstime is held on the un-even
years. This is the fifth time we have
had this recital. The first one, for us,
was in 1999.

Certification Corner
A “Certification Moment”
The Chair of the National Certification Commission, Dr. Sylvia Coats,
NCTM, sends a monthly “Certification Moment” to all State Certification Chairs. They are always informative and inspirational, and I thought
it would be helpful to pass on her
most recent thoughts.
“Can you believe it is already
2007? If you are like many, you
probably already have made and broken a few New Year’s resolutions.
This year, however, MTNA encourages you to make a lasting resolution--the resolution to complete
your MTNA Professional Certification. Your commitment to the music
teaching profession is exemplified by
your membership in MTNA, and
there is no better time to take this
professionalism one step further and
become a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music. By achieving MTNA
Professional Certification, you demonstrate to the public, as well as your
students and colleagues, a commitment to high professional standards.
Get 2007 off to a good start by pursuing your MTNA Professional Certification.”
Information about the MTNA Certification program is available at
www.mtnacertification.org.
You
may also request a packet from
MTNA by calling 888-512-5278 or emailing mtnacertifcation@mtna.org.

Local Chapters
 Chapter Spotlight 
Pullman Chapter
The Pullman MTNA Chapter is
busy preparing for upcoming events
in 2007. We’re particularly excited
about clinics and recitals featuring
composer Melody Bober in February,
adjudications with the dynamic Dr.
Jody Graves in March, and the WSMTA State Conference at WSU in June.
The Pullman Chapter and Washington State University enjoy a symbiotic relationship. Chapter recitals
are held in Kimbrough Concert Hall
on our treasured 10-foot Fazioli
piano. Melody Bober’s masterclass
and clinic on February 9-10 are sponsored by the university’s Piano Pedagogy Lab School run by Michelle
Mielke; Ms. Bober will be appearing
along with John Corigliano at WSU’s
Festival of Contemporary Art Music.
The collegiate chapter will attend the
MTNA Collborative Conference in
Toronto and will provide invaluable
assistance with the 2007 State Conference.
Recently we said goodbye to our
president Kathie Sharp, who accepted a new job out of town. Under
Kathie’s direction, the chapter joined
the Chamber of Commerce, created
rack cards to be displayed for publicity, approved new by-laws, and established a new website. We are
grateful for Kathie’s leadership and
will miss her.
We look forward to welcoming
you to Pullman from June 25-29 at
the State Conference!
