Humanistic theory
share with another group - do you
agree?
Now look at p 140 - were your criticisms
the same as in the book? If not add in
the headings for the criticisms in the
book.
EYSENCK’S TRAIT
THEORY
There are other theories of self that are more scientific and try
to measure personality more reliably.
Eysenck believed that personality ..
has a genetic basis - we’re born that way
has a biological explanation - personality shaped by a part
of the mid brain called the reticular activating system.
He said that our personality is shaped by the activity and
arousal of parts of our nervous system network - we can’t
help being disagreeable, shy, open e.t.c
PERSONALITY TRAITS
Trait - means a relatively stable and
enduring tendency to behave in a
particular way (e.g. being punctual,
considerate, happy or helpful)
Eysenck believed that a combination of
personality traits was the self or
identity of a person
OVER TO YOU ...
Activity 10.8 p 141 - Identify and describe personality traits
you might expect to see in the following people ..
criminal
clown
college student
nun
rock star
Do you think these traits are inborn and that’s why they end up in these
roles? Or do you think people adopt these
traits?
TRY THIS OUT ...
Listen to each statement and follow the
instructions
• Eysenck believed that each person’s personality could be
assessed by 2 main traits - Extraversion (how outgoing we are)
and Neuroticism ( how emotionally stable we are).
•These traits combine to tell us about our overall personality
•Eysenck studied 700 soldiers who had been psychologically
damaged in World War II and concluded that there were 4 basic
dimensions to personality - what are they? (see p 142)
NOW TRY THIS ....
Do activity 10.9 p141
Then mark your score on the worksheet
How could you describe your
personality based on this scale?
e.g. In 1976 when I did this test I was an
Unstable Extrovert!!

Personality Today’s trait researchers believe that Eysencks’ personality dimensions are too narrow and Cattell’s 16PF too large. So, a middle range (five factors) of traits does a better job of assessment. Fir...
