Ray and Pat Warner
“Ray and Pat Warner are hardworking
volunteers who are passionate about
everything they do.
Together they
volunteer their time between Shuffleboard,
Veterans Club and Pickle Ball functions.
Like so many, they are dedicated to
keeping SVE an ‘Active’ community.”
Ray and Pat were both born in Ohio.
Ray served in the Navy for 4 ½ years

Arizona. Ray was with Hostess Cake/
Wonder Bread for 21 years then to
Holsum Bakery in Phoenix as a sales

career in podiatry in Ohio and finished
her 40th year in Sedona. They retired
from Sedona and moved to SVE in
2009 where they became very active
in the community. Ray is the treasurer

Walt was born in Hillsdale,
Michigan in 1924. After graduating
from high school in 1942 he married
in November and received his first
draft notice that December.
In
February 1943 he joined the U.S.
Army and was sent to Gainesville,
Texas for basic training with the
86th “Black Hawk” Division and
continued his training at Fort Ord,
California.
His first South Pacific assignment
was
New
Caledonia
where he chauffeured a
First Lieutenant for three months. Later, Walt was
assigned to the 77th Division, an amphibious unit in
Guam. They spent 21 days in combat and made five
landings altogether: Guam, Ryukyus, Mandated, I E
Shima and Leyte, all islands around Okinawa. His
unit checked out all the islands for artillery.
While on I E Shima, Walt spent some time
talking to Ernie Pyle. Soon after a Japanese
sniper shot and killed the news reporter. The
very next day Walt was also shot. He spent time
in hospitals located in Saipan and Louisville,
Kentucky as well as the Mayo Army Hospital in

Illinois where he had surgery.
He was discharged from the army with a Purple Heart in
October 1945 and returned to Michigan where he started a
dry cleaning business. After 19 years he moved to Kansas
and worked for Cessna Aircraft for 22 years before retiring.
Walt and wife Glenna, who have been married for 34
years, moved to Arizona in 1983 and to SVE in 1985. Walt
served on the first Board of Directors for SVE and also
worked for SVE Maintenance until 1995. He volunteered
at Champlin Fighter Aircraft Museum at Falcon Field for 8
years, Banner Hospital for 12 years, was Moderator for the
Village Chapel for 3 years and he has been in the Chapel
Choir for a “long time.”
Walt has 4 daughters, two
stepchildren, many grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.
His
grandson accompanied him as
guardian last month on the “Honor
Flight” to Washington, D.C. Walt
was honored to be chosen and
excited that his grandson who is
in the Navy at Virginia Beach, VA
was able to go with him.
We honor Walt for his military
service and for his exemplary life
of volunteerism.

GOLF CONDO II
Wanda Katzman
I am writing this as I enjoy my patio today March 3, 2013.
It is 70 degrees and the beautiful golf course in front of me is
busy with happy people enjoying the weather with me. Soon
these happy people will be starting to think of travel again
to summer retreats or homes. We will miss them and look
forward to their returns.
We have a new association board elected at last the Golf
Condo II board meeting: Becky Savard, #211 President, Bill
Veach, #258 Vice President, Richard Hicks #265 Treasurer,
Thelma Whitaker #159 Director at Large, no secretary was
elected as of yet. The board reminds us that our condos are
aging and soon outside repairs will be needed and our reserve
funds may be depleted. A study is being done by JOMAR.
Greg thanked everyone for their help during his term and
stepped down as the contact for landscape and pest control.
Earl Obermiller #218 continues to replace outside light bulbs
and we appreciate his help.
It seems to be near an end of an era for our fun loving street.
Several of us in phase I have memories of moving here in
1992 when we picked out our sites for our new homes on the
golf course. We soon met our neighbors and formed close
friendships, even celebrating birthdays and anniversaries
together for these many years. Now with the loss of partners
and some moving away, we have very few original residents
still here and now a new practice is even taking a toll. As the
condos go up for sale, buyers come in and invest in rentals.
Now we may not even know our neighbors and there will be
less interest in taking board positions or planning parties. So
goes the times I guess!!
Jim and Gloria Tollefsbol #153 along with our social
committee planned the first “annual” Golf Condo II golf
tournament and there were 48 golfers and 87 residents who
enjoyed a wonderful pot luck dinner after golfing. We had 75
degree sunshine and a beautiful spot on the course near the
north golf cart shed for the dinner and to listen to awarding
of golf prizes. Greg Morgan, Arlene Zacher, Dan Keck and
Mary Anne Janse collected 1st Place! The social committee
outdid themselves with serving so much delicious food to
us all!
Thank you to all who contribute to the recycling with
clean articles, no plastic bags or cardboard. All cardboard
and newspapers should go to bins near the auditorium.
Library News
Loretta Wellman
It’s hard to believe that our winter visitors will soon be
departing, which means it’s time again for the Summer
Volunteer meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 10th at 9
am in the library. As usual, we will be reviewing procedures
and scheduling. Anyone interested in volunteering at least
two hours a week helping in the library is welcome. A
current volunteer will work with the new volunteers to help
acquaint them with our procedures.
We added two new book cases, which will hold our LARGE
PRINT books. This left space for our NON-FICTION books
on the north side of the library and more space for HISTORY.
If you have any appropriate books you would like to donate,
we would appreciate your help as that
is what makes our library great.
A book I’ve been reading,
“Snow in August” by Pete
Hamill, is a wonderful
novel set in Brooklyn
about an eleven year old
Irish-American boy and
his friendship with a war
refugee, a Rabbi from Prague.
The story is about prejudice,
religious
traditions
and
baseball all intertwined with a
surprise ending.
April 2013 3
Mariellen Moore
The weather is getting warmer and that comes with another
caution. Many will be walking more for exercise and many
will be walking to activity locations. When driving, please
slow down and take that 2nd or 3rd look for pedestrians.
Those of you strolling and enjoying the great weather,
please look both ways when approaching the street. This is
especially true on the north side of the Village where there
is an abundance of facilities and activity rooms. Don’t miss
these beautiful days visiting the emergency room.
Reports from our security group indicate we had a quiet
February. One false alarm wellness check, and, oh, of course,
a few garage and facility doors left open.
PANCAKE
BREAKFAST
Ed Malone
Our March breakfast was well attended. The way you
arrived made it a little easier for us. The line never got very
far past the front door. We had 652 paid guests - that’s 33
more then last March. To the best of my knowledge NO
ONE went away hungry.
Every month I am asked, did we make any money and
where does it go? Well, we are making money, $1415.00
after expenses for the March breakfast and it all goes to the
SVE General Fund. I pray they spend it wisely.
A “SPECIAL THANK YOU” to our new Volunteers.
They helped everything go smoothly, and, we hope they
had a good experience and will be back in April.
PRESIDENT’S NOTE
“Pete” Peterson
As the newly appointed President of the HOA Board
of Directors, rest assured that the entire board is working
together to provide the very best in office and maintenance
staff who will continue providing quality amenities and
customer service. With the recent departure of former
community manager Dick Schinke, the BOD has appointed
a search committee to find a new Community Manager.
The deadline for applications was March 22nd. In the
interim, our Activities Director, Lisa Titmas has assumed
the role of “Interim Manager.” The other office staff: Diane
Werth, Linda Hayden, Denise Wilson and our resident
volunteers have picked up the slack and are working
with great diligence to see that the office continues to
run efficiently. Denise Wilson, the newest addition to the
SVE team has taken on the duties as the SVE Accountant.
Denise has years of accounting experience, including
a very strong background in managing HOA finances.
Denise comes highly recommended by our SVE auditor,
Michael Ginsberg and has already proven a real asset to
the team. Maintenance Director Wayne Elden, and the
entire maintenance/housekeeping crew continue to go full
speed ahead in providing the very best in maintenance/
housekeeping services during this time of transition.
To the snowbirds who will soon head back to different
parts of the country, be safe and we’ll see you next season.
To our annual residents, please be advised there will not
be a BOD meeting during the month of July.
“While we take inspiration from the past, like most
Americans, we live for the future” Ronald Reagan
Pastor Koerselman
When I grew up in Iowa corn country, a half century ago,
plowing the fields for spring planting was an annual ritual
and a fun one. After autumn’s harvest and the long frozen
winter, the earth was transformed into rich, black soil by our
old three bottom plow.
I liked plowing. I couldn’t wait to go out into fields, drop
the plow into the ground, open up the throttle and hear the
M International Farmall tractor roar its engine and watch its
tires dig into the ground. Rolling coulters, razor-like disks,
located at the front end of the plow would cut into the earth
so the three plowshares could turn over the dirt. It was kind
of like a death-resurrection experience. The hard ground,
strewn with dead corn stalks and an assortment of dried up
weeds and other things, quickly disappeared as the three
bottom plow covered them up with the black soil.
Today in much of the Midwest, the age of the plow is over.
The disk, a piece of machinery with dozens of steel disks,
chews up the earth, but it doesn’t really turn the soil over.
The result is a field that looks like it’s hardly been prepared
for planting and seeding. It’s rather uneven and messy. But
it works. Healthy, tall corn grows on it. Three bottom plows
are obsolete; they barely bring $50.
Today, there is another kind of plow which is in danger of
being thrown on the scrap heap. It’s the spiritual plow; the
kind of plow people of faith use to go deep into their souls
where God dwells.
In the book, “The Way Things Are” Houston Smith
writes that the first word in prayer should be “God.” Then
we should stop and dwell there for a while. Our prayers are
usually packed with petitions like “Help me” and “Give me,”
“Deliver me.” We run from one need to another. By simply
meditating on the word, God, or faith, hope or love, we will
plow deeper. Does it produce quick results, probably not.
But it will give us spiritual food that will last a long time.
There is a Buddhist proverb which says we all want
water, but we are only willing to dig shallow holes. David
encourages us in Psalm 23, to lie down in green pastures and
rest beside still waters. Still water runs deep and it’s quiet. . .
.an ideal place to rest and refresh our souls.
GARDEN CONDO III
NEWS
JoAnn Wallgren
Our winter season is drawing to a quick close! We
had three fun parties to celebrate the doldrums of winter
and now we await Spring and then Summer. For those
returning to the far North… have a safe travel; for those
staying in Arizona for the summer... stay cool. We’ll look
forward to seeing all of you again in the Fall. Plan on
the usual Pizza Party to start the next season (2013-2014)
anew when we return. Take care and come back to Garden
Condo III ready to “party hardy” again next winter season!
Golf One Condo News
By Bev Abbott
April is upon us, which means we will start saying our
“Good-Bye’s” to the winter residents. Remember to complete
a VACATION WATCH FORM and leave it at the SVE-HOA
office and find yourself a caretaker for your home while you
are away.
In March, two neighbors lost their fights with cancer.
Ron Lano died, and services were in Minnesota. Dennis
Augdahl, sold his condo and moved back to Minnesota last
November to be near family. We extend our sympathy to
their families.
Thanks to all our residents who made this year a success
from the volunteers who assisted in various ways to each and
every one of you who participated in our events. We hope
you have a great summer and look forward to seeing you
in the fall. When you return in the fall bring back a picture
of your High School Graduation or your Wedding and we
will have some fun with them next season. Let’s come
back ready to support our new board and work together for
another successful season.

Many thanks to all our Village friends for supporting our
recent Hamburger Fry. Your support enables us to continue
making improvements to your softball field and to purchase
new uniforms for your teams. An additional thank you is due
to our activity director and maintenance personnel for their
assistance with the Fry! Also look for information on the
mid-week e-mail updates for the times when our spring and
summer programs begin. All residents, of any skill level, are
encouraged to participate in these programs.
The Woodshop
The Woodshop is open every weekday from 9 am
to noon until the end of April. The next monthly
Woodshop Meeting is at 10:30 am in the Rosewood
Room on Tuesday, April 2.
The Woodshop has installed a new Quincy 5 HP air
compressor with two 60 gal. storage tanks. Finally, we
have enough air volume to run all the air-driven hand
sanders that our residents want to use at the same time.
Much thanks to Frank Himmelspach for his work in
preparing the new system and installing it.
We sold our old Porter Cable air compressor, which
recouped the Woodshop a few hundred dollars, and defrayed
a bit over 15 percent of the cost of our new air system.
Earl Hoscheit is our craftsman of the month for
April. He built a beautiful bench to go at the end of
his bed; and it matches the headboard. We think you
will agree that it is a fine piece of workmanship and a
beautiful bench.

however, is attendance at the Jam Session. This is the

Tennis Talk
Diana Roskuski
The March Championships tournament
provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase
our tennis facilities and the SVE community to
nearly 400 players and thousands of spectators
from 15 other East Valley communities. Many
have relocated to SVE following exposure
during League and tournament play.
Most of our 250 Tennis Club members
volunteer in multiple capacities during the
Championships, and their work is appreciated!
On February 22nd, the SVE Tennis Club
hosted an annual visit by 16 tennis players
from Westwood High School. The high
school players are surprised by the skills of
our senior members, and enjoy the friendly
competition, a chance to test their serve
speeds (their top player reached 98 mph!),
and treats and pizza provided by Club
members. Many SVE residents designate
school real estate taxes toward programs at
Westwood High.
A generous group of members purchased a
total of 55 pies at the annual auction to raise
funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society on
February 24th. $3,718 was donated that day,
and will sponsor the SVE Tennis Club team
in the November walk at the Phoenix Zoo.
League and tournament play have ended for
the season. The Club’s “Last Hurrah” event
will be on Wednesday, April 17th. The fun will
include morning Round Robin play, followed
by hot dogs and root beer floats for lunch.
Officers for the 2013/14 season were
elected at the March 7th general meeting:
Lona Christoffers, President; Vikki Dillon,
VP; Lin-Da Stougard, secretary; Roger
Betts, treasurer; John Gleason, social chair;
Diana Roskuski, publicist; Arlan VanWyk,
invitational chair; and Ron Roskuski
appointed as statistician. Thanks were
extended to the outgoing officers: Fred
Gross, President; Leatrice Dewey, social
chair; Jim Laframboise, publicist; Lee
Jackson, past president.
All SVE residents are invited to participate
in open Round Robin play on Monday/
Wednesday/Friday at 7 a.m. throughout
the summer. Contact Bill Erickson at 3545130 for more information, or just come to
the courts! Free beginner/refresher lessons
resume in October.

SPORTS/CLUBS
SUNRUNNERS RV
CLUB
Mylla O’Dell
The weather in Bisbee, Arizona, was cold and blustery –
sometimes 50-mph winds – but twelve Sunrunners ventured
out anyway for our monthly outing. Jerry O’Dell planned this
trip and, even though he is my husband, I have to brag a bit
about what a great job he did! He had activities and restaurants
planned for the whole four days and all we had to do was follow
the schedule. After we checked into the Queen Mine RV Park
and got settled, we went on a guided tour of the Queen Mine.
Everyone had to wear a yellow slicker and miner’s helmet, as
well as carry a miner’s lamp with a battery pack. It was COLD
down there, but we dressed for it and had a great time.
Sunday we traveled about 20 miles to Sierra Vista for brunch
before going to the Arizona Folklore Preserve in Ramsey Canyon.
There we saw Dolan Ellis (Arizona’s state balladeer for 46 years
and a former member of the New Christy Minstrels). He sings
a lot of songs he has written about Arizona while projecting
on a screen photos he has taken in his travels around the state.
Ramsey Canyon is known as the Hummingbird Capital of the
West because it has more varieties of hummingbirds than any
other spot in the country. February is a little early to see the little
birds; they are generally in abundance in April.
Monday we had breakfast at a unique restaurant called the
Bisbee Breakfast Club. The staff there does everything to please.
Our food arrived hot and wonderfully good. The homemade
biscuits are about five inches in diameter and are to die for! They
also had rhubarb pie, which made at least one person in our
group extremely happy. Have you ever had pie for dessert after
breakfast? Try it – you might like it! From there we drove down
to Douglas to see the Gadsden Hotel, which has an ornate lobby
with Italian marble staircase, pillars embellished with gold leaf,
and a 42-foot Tiffany stained glass mural. If you haven’t been
there, it is a real treat to see. That afternoon we hopped on the
trolley car tour of Bisbee, followed by dinner at Santiago’s great
mexican food restaurant.
For our last day of sightseeing Jerry had us going west on Hwy
92 to Coronado National Memorial Visitor Center and on up to
the Coronado Cave. At the visitor center our club members had
their pictures taken wearing Francisco Coronado-era iron head
gear and carrying a sword and shield. From there we drove to
the trailhead of the Coronado Cave trail. This is a ¾-mile trek
UPHILL to the cave entrance. Six of us ventured out and six of
us made it to the top, but only three actually went straight down
into the cave. The smart people stayed at the bottom waiting for
us to come back!! I’ll tell you one thing – the walk down was
a lot easier than going up! For dinner we went to a very unique
place called the Screaming Banshee Pizza and Wine Bar. It is in
a restored 50’s gas station so isn’t very large, but was packed with
people. We had some of the best pizza ever; it is hand tossed and
baked in a 755-degree open wood-burning oven.
Next month Dick & Jan Moon are taking us north on Hwy
17 to Phoenix Metro RV park. Among other things, they have
planned a tour of the State Capital building and also the Musical
Instrument Museum. We’re all looking forward to that. As
always, I invite anyone with any kind of RV to come to one of
our meetings the first Tuesday of the month at 3 pm in the Mesa
Verde Room. I think you would enjoy what we do!
Billards
Wayne Berg
Over the many years members of the Billiards Club
have donated their time and materials to make the SVE
Billiards Room such a great place. Members have put
up lights over the tables, build oak cabinets for pool cue
storage, built benches along the two walls for seating and
more. To those many wonderful club members who have
the years have made donations to the billiards room a
special thank you!
Since the beginning of the billiards club members have
two travelling 12 member men’s teams that compete all
over the East Valley. We also have a two member All
Star Men’s Team. The women have a travelling team also.
This has produced a tremendous amount of interest from
outside the community. People relocate to SVE because
of our Billiards program.

SHUFFLEBOARD
CLUB NEWS
Carleton Moore
After a busy and enjoyable March, we are still playing
shuffleboard until the end of April so come on out and join
us. Start time may change from 10 am to 9 am as the weather
heats up. We play Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
mornings in what we call jackpot or individual games. Some
play one game and some play two. Each game takes about
an easy hour.
Congratulations to Leonard Smith’s team who won the
in park league. Members of the team are: Leonard Smith,
Anita Lakey, Jean Hartley, Boyde White and Max Magnuson.
Carl Hershey was the Spring Singles tournament winner.
Max Magnuson survived the four day event to take second.
Sylvia Schmidt was the consolation round winner.
At our business meeting on March 15th new officers were
elected and prizes and certificates of appreciation were
awarded. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the members
who keep our boards in good playing shape.

With a slight delay, our players were given a reprieve for
court-time until construction of new courts can proceed.
Once it begins, playing will be discontinued until the
courts are completed.
The March social, hosted by Mike Withrow and Marilyn
Huff was held on the 10th in the Mesa Verde Room. Sloppy
joes, side dishes, and desserts were enjoyed by thirty guests.
We’re happy to report that Cathy Hinsperger gave lessons to
nine interested players last month, and seventeen new members
were added to the ranks! So the Club is growing daily and
interest in the game is spreading throughout the Village.
Come join us at the south court …and try your hand at
this fun sport!
South Complex
Fitness/Wellness
Center Ground
Breaking
The City of Mesa Planning Division omitted a required
item for SVE to get the building permit approved. The City’s
error has delayed our permit for the Fitness/Wellness Center
at least 2 and possibly 3 weeks. We were not able to go
forward with the Ground Breaking on March 8 as originally
planned. Plans are on hold until the SVE Board actually
has the permit. Once SVE has the permit, our maintenance
staff will start clearing the rock and preparing the ground for
the new building. Watch for information on the SVE web
site and weekly SVE updates for the new Ground Breaking
Ceremony date.
The equipment committee’s proposal was approved by
the SVE Board of Directors. The bulletin board outside the
SVE Office and in the North Pool Fitness aerobic room have
a diagram with a legend of where and what equipment we
have proposed. Please check it out. We are looking forward
to getting the building done and well equipped for the SVE
residents.
Several generous residents have already made donations
for the new Fitness/Wellness Center. We have received over
$2,550. If you would like to make a voluntary contribution,
it can be made in memory of a loved one or in honor of a
special person. Checks can be made out to the SVE Fitness
Club. We are preparing plaques to place in the new facility
to recognize these contributions. The Fitness Club has
been formed to help educate residents on the use of the new
equipment and manage contributions for the new Fitness/
Wellness Center. We signed up a lot of members for the
Fitness Club at the Pancake Breakfast. We plan on having
sign up sheets at the next Pancake Breakfast too. Please join
us. We want to thank all of you for your support.

March was a busy month for all the quilters who belong to
our group. We had many classes to attend including making
purses, hats, iron caddies as well as learning to quilt and to
appliqué. As well, we continue to work on donation quilts
and the Child’s Crisis Center was the recipient of
our charity program. All members were busy
making quilted projects for the craft fair and
our quilt show the following week was a
huge success. April will be much slower
with many of our members heading
back to their summer homes. We have
a number of quilters who will continue
to meet at 12:30 in the Oakwood Room
on Mondays for short meetings as well
as show and tell and will gather on
Wednesdays for our afternoons of
charity quilting. All quilters, new or
experienced are always welcome.

Our monthly meeting for April will be held on April
8th, the usual second Monday. We meet at 6:00 pm in
the Mesa Verde Room. Anyone who wishes to join us is
invited to participate. If you would like to attend, please
call Darlene Rich at 986-6985 so that we may have a more
accurate count of tables to set.
We will be having our usual pot luck dinner that evening.
Please bring your favorite dish to serve approximately 10
people. Our pot luck dinners are always delicious as we
have lots of good cooks in our group. All table service is
furnished along with water to drink.
Our dinners are followed by a variety of entertainment
including musical presentations, interesting speakers, or
even games and stories. Whatever it is, we have fun. We
will be having guest speakers for April, Byron and Carey
Barnard, who have been living in Myanmar (formerly
Burma) for the past 18 months. They will be telling us all
about their experiences while trying to do humanitarian
work in that country. Plan on an interesting and insightful
look at that part of our world that evening.

At the February 27th Red Hat Tea, the Dazzling Desert
Dolls celebrated the theme of “Happy Birthday.”
It was everybody’s birthday! Group 6 hosted our tea with
balloons and a gift for everyone. The tables were decorated
with all the gifts. The brightly colored cupcakes, fruit,
cookies and tea were delicious.
We thank them for hosting our tea.
After we read our Red Hat Pledge, our Queen Mother,
Ruth Weston, read a Red Hat poem, that says we
should count our birthdays every day. She then read a few
great jokes, which we all got to laugh about.
Group outings were reported. Some went to visit Hospice,
Salt River Indian Community, Tia Rosa and Group 6,
wrapped all the some 70 gifts for our Tea. Ruth read a story:
“Winter” Where did all the years go?
We meet every 4th Wednesday of the month in the
Mesa Verde Room at 9:30 am. Guests are most welcome.
Everyone brings their own cup and a teabag to enjoy the tasty
refreshments provided by one group. For more information,
please call Ruth Weston at 480-247-9928.

March was a great month for us. Our 2013 revue was
successful due to all of you wonderful SVE residents
supporting us and attending our three performances. We
have many beautiful memories that we will treasure forever.
Our thanks to the many volunteers who helped us with all the
backstage duties.
We were happy to host another Ladies Luncheon on March
19th and again share some of our dance numbers.
Our spring meeting was held at the Mesa Verde Room
on March 29th following a delicious catered luncheon.
Outgoing officers received appreciation from all members
as new officers were elected. Music for our next show, a 25
year anniversary one, has been selected and we’ve already
begun learning new dances.
If you’d like to join us we will have a class starting in
November for beginning tap dancers. For all who are leaving
soon to return home we wish you well and may you have a

At the March 5 meeting of the SVE Book Club each
member shared and highlighted a favorite book. These
eighteen books, along with additional recommendations from
the members, will be voted on for the 2013-2014 reading
year. Both fictional and non-fictional books, with settings
in a variety of time periods and locations were described
enthusiastically by the readers. Two books included wolves
in the story line (Lone Wolf and The Tenderness of Wolves).
Books about former U.S. Presidents included Destiny of the
Republic (James A. Garfield) , Killing Lincoln, and Franklin
and Lucy (FDR). Mysteries included Gone Girl, Murder in
the Resort (by a local author), and Safe Haven. Adventures
in foreign lands were described in the Secret Daughter
(India), Baking Cakes in Kigali (Rwanda), and The Yellow
House (Northern Ireland). Stories taking place in the U.S.A.
included Redfield Farm (Underground Railroad), The Walk
(cross-country, present-day adventure), and The Story of
Edgar Sawtelle (northern woods of Wisconsin). The Weird
Sisters (maturing and self-discovery), The Story of Beautiful
Girl (mental disabilities), Naked in the Marketplace (attitudes
to class), and The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out
of the Window and Disappeared (escape from an old peoples’
home) rounded out the members’ favorites.
Please join us on April 2 at 10:00 am in the Saguaro Room

“Buttons” our 18 pound bundle
of joy, was born on December 22,
2002 in St Louis, MO, half Cocker
Spaniel and half Bichon Frise,
bred and raised by a veterinarian
in St Louis. Buttons joined
Harold and Linda Ansell’s family
when she was 3 months old. At 9
months old, she developed valley
fever. After a year’s worth of
medication, she made it through
just fine. Although very playful in
the beginning, like all of us, time
is starting to catch up with her. At
10 years old, she is fitting into the
senior lifestyle just fine. She has become a loving member of
our family.
At the Discover Event in January, our booth had a 50/50 jar for
people to take a chance. The drawing was held during our dog
walk event on February 16, and the winner was Sherry Forbes
of SVE.
The community’s response to our drive for supplies to donate
to dog shelters was a huge success. The supplies filled an SUV
from top to bottom, including the passenger seat!!
TIP: If you and your pet are unfortunate enough to run into
one of our skunks, the usual tomato juice is an odor remover, but
you can also soak your pet’s coat with a mixture of half water and
half vinegar, then rinse with plain water.
Our next meeting will be April 20 in the Mesa Verde Room at
9:30 am and a social beginning at 10:00 am.

“Folks” the roof rats are moving our way. They love
citrus, so please keep your fruit trees trimmed and the fruit
picked off the tree and the ground. They also like to chew
on electric wiring and that could cause a fire. Your home is
private, don’t let the rats in. Once they are in your home,
they are hard to get rid of.

Zounds Founder and
CEO Sam Thomasson
with his daughter
Kate.
Sam Thomasson, father and engineer, promised his hearing impaired daughter Kate
that he would solve her hearing aid issues and build her a superior hearing aid.
57 patents later, this simple promise has revolutionized an industry.
Kate had a number of problems with her
expensive, regular technology hearing aids.
Even though they cost thousands of dollars,
they still didn’t help her hear well in a noisy
environment. Kate needed an aid that would
reduce the background noise while enhancing
the volume. Sam developed two technologies,
one that can tell the difference from a human
sound and other sounds, like wind and tires, and
another that created a cone of listening in front
of the wearer. The combination eliminates up to
90% of unwanted noise, enhancing the voice.
This made a huge impact on Kate’s life. To Sam’s
dismay, Kate went on a date. She came home very
excited, not about the boy, but because when the
boy asked her what the waitress had said, she
was able to tell him. Sam was so thankful that he
could give this to her.
