Normal Mass Times are listed on the front of the bulletin. Please contact the office for special Mass times during Lent and Holy Days of Obligation. To receive your First Holy Communion, contact the Parish Office, 896-9408. SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION Essential to the Christian Life, the Sacrament of Confession is where we come into contact with Christ who wishes to heal and bless us. Regular Confession is an integral part of practicing our Faith and experiencing the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus. 30 minutes before every Mass, the Sacrament of Confession is offered. If you need to receive the Sacrament of Confession for the first time, contact the Parish Office, 8969408. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Through the waters of Baptism, the new Christian enters the Church and is given Eternal Life. If you would like to have your infant baptized, please contact the Parish Office at least 2-4 months prior to the baby’s due date so that there is enough time to complete preparation for the Sacrament. Parents should be registered, participating members of the Parish Family. Candidates for Sponsors (Godparents) should be attending Mass regularly. Both parents and sponsors will attend a Baptismal Seminar before they receive the Baptismal Packet which must be received before an approved date is scheduled. If you are a parent or an adult seeking the Sacrament of Baptism, please contact the Parish Office, 896-9408. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE In the beginning, God created mankind as one, male and female. Christ elevated this union to the level of a Sacrament, an image of His own love for His Bride, The Church. Our Parish Family is made up of many beautiful marriages who enrich the Church and the world. Couples discerning the vocation of Holy Matrimony should contact the Parish Office to begin the journey of preparing for their new life together no later than 6-9 months prior to the desired wedding date. SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK AND FUNERAL/BURIAL ARRANGEMENTS The Church and her Sacraments accompany us at every moment of our life. When we are very sick or nearing the end of this life, we receive the healing of Christ through Anointing of the Sick. Please contact the Parish Office, 896-9408, to make an appointment. Also, contact the office before you contact anyone else in making funeral arrangements. We will lovingly guide you through that most difficult time. NEW PARISHIONERS WELCOME Please fill out a census card (located near the doors of the church), call the Parish Office or register online at the church website: www.sprcc.org. VOLUME 947 NUMBER 946 SAINT PETER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 10, 2014 TODAY: SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY FRIDAY, AUGUST 15TH (Holy Day of Obligation) MASS SCHEDULE: Thursday, August 14th: 6:00pm Vigil Friday, August 15th, 6:30AM; 12:05PM We invite all parishioners to bring bouquets of flowers, herbs, and grains to the Vigil Mass of the Assumption, Thursday, August 14th @ 6:00pm to be blessed according to the following Polish Custom: In Poland, the Feast of the Assumption is also called Blessed Mother of the Herbs or Our Lady of the Herbs. The Blessed Mother is seen as the patron and keeper of the earth and all its abundance. On this special feast day every village housewife brought a bouquet of herbs, flowers and grain that was collected from her own garden, the fields and orchards. She gathered dill, mint, rosemary, southernwood, parsley, hipsop, lovage and comfrey – whatever she had growing in her garden. Since this time coincided with the time of harvest, it was also the custom to take a few spikes of various grains including wheat, rye and oats. Many plants were named after the Blessed Mother. For instance, mullein, called dgieuanna in Polish, was known as the braids of the Blessed Mother. And the wild herb, St. John’s Wort was called the bells of the Blessed Mother. After the blessing, the flowers and herbs were taken home and tacked behind holy pictures to protect the home against fire and lightening. Some farmers crumbled some of the blessed flowers into their seed bags in the belief that it would assure a good harvest. Some of the herbs were used in folk medicine to cure a cough or a cold. This is a custom that was once prevalent throughout Polonia, brought to this county by our Polish ancestors. HOLY FATHER’S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR AUGUST UNIVERSAL INTENTION: That refugees, forced by violence to abandon their homes, may find a generous welcome and the protection of their rights. FOR EVANGELIZATION: That Christians in Oceania may joyfully announce the faith to all the people of that region. +Special Collection for Property/Liability Insurance MARK YOUR CALENDAR MONDAY – AUGUST 11 6:30AM – Mass TUESDAY – AUGUST 12 6:30AM – Mass 6:00PM – Choir Practice [Church] WEDNESDAY – AUGUST 13 Carencro Catholic School - First Day of School 6:30AM – Mass 5:30PM - Overeaters [Parish Hall-Upper Room] 7:00PM – Neocatechumenal Way [Parish Hall] THURSDAY – AUGUST 14 6:30AM – Mass 6:00PM – Vigil Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 6:30PM – Knights of Columbus Meeting FRIDAY – AUGUST 15 Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Holy Day of Obligation) 6:30AM – Mass 12:05PM - Mass SATURDAY – AUGUST 16 +Special Collection for Property/Liability Insurance 4:00PM – Mass SUNDAY – AUGUST 17 +Special Collection for Property/Liability Insurance 7:00AM, 10:00AM, 5:30PM Mass EXTRAORDINARY FORM 1:00 PM “O Jesus, deign to take me into Your Sacred Heart. Grant that it may be the sanctuary where I may be recollected, sheltered, and find my rest.” ~Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, OCD, Divine Intimacy FATHER LEDOUX’S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR AUGUST WORSHIP: As we celebrate this month the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of the Acadian people, may we recall our Lady's perfect example of Faith in God and her many protections and favors shown to us through her loving intercession. FAITH FORMATION: For all parents at the start of a new year of Catechism. As the first teachers of the Faith to their children, may they be guided and strengthened in word and deed in handing on the precious gift of our Faith to all our children. EVANGELIZATION: May our hearts be transformed by the grace of Jesus' Transfiguration so that we may desire nothing else to Him. SOCIAL JUSTICE: On Sunday, July 20, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, prayed for peace in all situations of tension and conflict in the world. He mentioned in particular the Middle East and Ukraine, singling out the terrible crisis of Christians in Iraq with these words: “Today our brothers are persecuted. They are banished from their homes and forced to flee without even being able to take their belongings!” “May the God of peace arouse in all an authentic desire for dialogue and reconciliation. Violence cannot be overcome with violence. Violence is overcome with peace!” BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES: In gratitude for all those who have financially offered a little more to help our parish meet its Insurance Premiums in past years and that our parishioners may be blessed to do so again this year. SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY FRIDAY, AUGUST 15TH (Holy Day of Obligation) MASS SCHEDULE: Thursday, August 14th: 6:00pm Vigil Friday, August 15th, 6:30AM; 12:05PM Novena Prayer in Honor of Our Lady (August 7th – 15th) Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Almighty and eternal God, You took the holy Virgin up into the kingdom of heaven after she had heard the word of God and kept it. We ask You to make us, Your servants, always intent on the things which are above, so that we may come to share in her glory. We pray through Christ, our Lord. Amen. “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” ~Pope Pius XII FEAST OF ST. MONICA – AUGUST 27TH Please pray this Novena Prayer to St. Monica for one family member or friend who is away from The Faith each day from August 18th-27th. NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. MONICA Most good and faithful St. Monica, through the tears of your compassion for your son St. Augustine who was away from The Church of Christ, you became the instrument of Grace for his conversion and holiness. Please now intercede on my behalf before God for (insert name). May they return to their Faith and become a saint like your son. Amen. “We should go to prayer with deep humility and an awareness of our nothingness. We must invoke the help of the Holy Spirit and that of our good angel, and then remain still in god’s presence, full of faith that He is more in us than we are in ourselves.” ~St. Jane Frances de Chantal [Optional Memorial August 12th] Scripture … there was a tiny whispering sound. (1 Kings 19:12b) They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, (Romans 9:4,5) "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." (Matthew 14:28,29a) Reflection Do you hear God as Elijah did. in “a tiny whispering sound?” Do you find Jesus in the storm as Peter did and then ask Jesus “to come to (him) on the water” Do you listen when God asks to act outside your comfort zone or do you sink into fear? God can do everything and I can do nothing. But if I offer this nothing in prayer to God, everything becomes possible to me. Within myself I feel the ability to perform an act of perfect love following Jesus on Calvary, dying with him on the cross. Thousands and thousands of years may pass and my position will not change. But... what is impossible for me, the rich man in the Gospel, is possible for God! It is he who will give me the grace to transform myself; he will make me able to carry out the impossible and remove the obstacle which separates me from the Kingdom. And so it is a question of waiting, of humble and trustful prayer, of patience and hope. But the God of the impossible will not ignore my cry.1 1Carretto, Carlo, Carlo Carretto, Edited by Robin Baird-Smith, Templegate Publishers: Springfield, IL, 1990, p. 76. “Ask yourselves the question; how often is Jesus inside and knocking on the door to be let out, to come out?” ~Pope Francis CURSILLO SPIRITUAL GROUP FOR WOMEN A regular Women’s Cursillo Spiritual Group meeting is held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Tell My priests that hardened sinners will repent on hearing their words when they speak about My unfathomable mercy, about the compassion I have for them in My Heart. Everyone benefits from the sacrificial gift one makes of his time, talent, and treasure.” ~Pope Benedict XVI THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS AND STEWARDSHIP! BECAUSE OF YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT, WE HAVE A WONDERFUL PLACE OF WORSHIP. A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT Today’s Gospel reveals what miraculous things can happen when one embraces a single-minded faith in Jesus Christ. Peter gets out of a windtossed boat when the Lord calls him. His faith is tested by his obedience to Jesus who is calling him out onto the water. In the midst of the waves and the wind, Peter gets out of the boat and walks toward Jesus. Good stewards heed Christ’s call to them. Sometimes that call directs them to take on seemingly impossible challenges. This week, reflect on how the Lord could be calling you out of the safety of your own “boat” to take on the impossible. PRAY FOR A PRIEST EACH DAY! For the week of August 11th – August 17th: August 11 Rev. Bernard Lebiedz, OSB August 12 Rev. Clyde LeBlanc, SJ August 13 Rev. Steven LeBlanc August 14 Rev. Louis Ledoux August 15 Rev. Mark Ledoux August 16 Rev. Lambert Lein, SVD August 17 Rev. Austin Leger Eternal Father, we lift up to You these and all the priests of the world. Sanctify them. Heal and guide them. Mold them into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus, the Eternal High Priest. May their lives be pleasing to You. In Jesus’’ name we pray. Amen. WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR CATHOLIC FAITH? LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA At the side entry of our church next to the cry room, is a Catholic Media. These inspiring talks on various topics of Catholic life help build up our own faith in God and our Catholic beliefs and also better prepare us to share our Catholic faith with others. Before you leave today, go by the side entrance and check out our new CDs and share them with others! PRAYER BLANKET MINISTRY Anyone interested in sewing prayer blankets or donating fabric or thread, please call 261-5607. Our sincere thanks for your contributions to this ministry. ROSARY FOR PEACE The Rosary for peace for our country and our soldiers will be prayed every Thursday before 6:30 a.m. Mass. PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in You will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
