Advent Reconciliation Service
Dear People of St. Catherine,
This day of my installation as your pastor has been anticipated by both you and me, and today all of us join in this celebration. While I am happy to be installed as your Pastor, this day
does not belong to me. It belongs to all of us and the generations of faith that will come after us.
Your legacy of faith, commitment, and sacrifice has been
well witnessed for over 56 years. The parishioners who have
built and sustained St. Catherine did so that their faith would
be nourished as the Body of Christ in the world, in our neighborhood, and in our families. Our past should be celebrated
and embraced, as we together continue our pilgrimage of faith.
Together we, as believers, make a commitment to show our
love and support for St. Catherine Parish and for one another
as we work together, relying not only on our own initiatives
but on the grace of God. We trust in Him, believing in our
future.
Since I arrived at St. Catherine on September 1, I have experienced a very welcoming community who have been very
supportive. So many of you have asked me, Father, what can I
do to help you and our parish? Many committees have been
very active. The Facilities Committee and members of the
Men’s Club have been very busy. Most recently, they have
volunteered their time to cut down the five dead trees we had
on our property. (I do like trees and would never cut down
healthy trees.) They have also been hard at work removing the
old wallpaper in the rectory Dining Room which was peeling
off the walls, and painting the Dining Room as well as rectory
offices. (I never knew how much fun removing wallpaper isNOT.) Work has begun on reroofing the leaking rectory roofs.
The Finance Council has rolled up its sleeves to tackle pressing
financial concerns, and we are moving forward with the Archdiocese Catholic Appeal Debt Reduction Program as well as
Electronic Giving. The Teen Club has helped with the removal
of dead bushes around the rectory. The Liturgy Committee has
helped with the planning of special liturgies, including our All
Soul’s Mass of Remembrance. I have been doing my best to
show my support of all the organizations by being present at
your meetings and occasionally offering my two-cents.
I am strongly committed to Catholic Education, and I have
been meeting regularly with our very competent and dedicated
principal, Ms. Catherine Hudson. I enjoy visiting our students
both in the classroom and during athletic competitions.
I also wish to acknowledge the staff and the many good parishioners of St. Barbara Parish. I was installed three years ago
as your pastor. Having taught at Quigley South and then Archbishop Quigley for 23 years, I felt a little like a fish out of water (Fr. Stan, that analogy is for you) as I assumed the responsibilities of pastoring for the first time. Your love and support
have trained me well to be a shepherd of souls.
I thank all of you who have come to celebrate my installation
as the 6th pastor of St. Catherine. Please pray for me that I
may be a good pastor and priest for St. Catherine.

Monday, Dec. 16 at 7:00 p.m.—Church
During Advent, we hear from John the
Baptist who calls us to Prepare the
Way of the Lord. To spiritually
prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth
of our Savior, we will have an Advent
Reconciliation Service. The service
will begin with prayer, reading of scripture, followed by
an Examination of Conscience, time for reflection, and
concluding with Individual Confessions.

We would like to give our church a good
cleaning for Christmas. Bring your
buckets, rags, and mops. We will be
mopping the floors, washing the pews and kneelers,
and dusting everything. Students needing service
hours are welcome.

Ellen Gold (right) has been
going through the RCIA
process. She has completed the
Inquiry stage. On December 1,
she requested admission into
the Church as a Catechumen.
Ellen was blessed by Fr.
Dennis, sponsored by Nancy,
and welcomed by the
congregation. She will continue to study and reflect until Holy
Saturday. At that time, she will receive the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Please pray for Ellen’s
journey of faith. Take some time to think about your own faith
journey. Are you still on the journey? What can you do to
improve your relationship with Jesus?

CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE
through Sunday, December 16
St. Catherine's Giving Tree for Christmas will take a
different format for this holiday season. We will be
helping to support Catholic Charities’ Annual Celebration
of Giving Toy Showers. Last year, more than 8,000 of
the neediest children in the care of Catholic Charities
unwrapped the Spirit of the Season.
Toys can be brought to church and placed under the
Giving Tree or dropped off at the rectory. Toys should
be NEW, in their ORIGINAL PACKAGES, and
UNWRAPPED. Catholic Charities volunteers will wrap
the toys and distribute to the neediest of children
throughout the archdiocese. Catholic Charities will pick
up all donated toys on Monday, December 16.
Volunteers are an essential part of the Celebration of
Giving. Catholic Charities needs your help, December 2
through December 24, to sort and package gifts.
You can also Sponsor-a-Family, reaching out to families
who are most in need, responding to their basic wishes for
clothing, household items, books, or school supplies.
Sponsoring a family for $50-$75 goes a long way toward
helping their wishes come true.

Canticum Novum Choir
performing at St. Catherine Church
Sunday, Dec. 15, 4:00 p.m.,
Canticum Novum is pleased to present classical and
contemporary music of the season in our beautiful
church. This a cappella Choir has been performing
together since 1999. Members of the choir have
backgrounds in a variety of musical performance
and musical teaching careers. Many have sung in
community choirs and musical theater productions.
Most share their time and talents with local churches
and church choirs as well. The concert is FREE,
though a Free-Will offering is appreciated. After the
concert, the Liturgy Committee will host a Wine and
Cheese for adults and Punch for kids.

Opłatek (singular-pronounced
opwatek) is also known as the
Christmas Wafer. While it is a
traditional Polish custom, many
families have included the
ritual as part of their Christmas
Eve or Christmas Day family
meal. Opłatki (pluralpronounced opwatkey) is made
from unleavened bread similar to a host, and pressed
into rectangles with an outline of a Nativity Scene
imprinted on the surface.
At the Christmas Meal, the head of the house begins
sharing a piece of Opłatek with the other members of
the family who are gathered around the table. Each
family member breaks off a piece of the Opłatek to
share. As the pieces are broken and shared,
greetings of a holy Christmas and a healthy New
Year are exchanged. The ritual is a reminder of who
comes to us at Christmas, and why. It is also a
symbol of forgiveness. Wafers are available at the
rectory for a donation of $5.00.

special Annual Catholic Appeal Debt Reduction Program. The
Finance Council has decided to accept this invitation. For
2014, for every contributed dollar, the Archdiocese will match
dollar for dollar, until our debt of $290,000 is paid off with the
Archdiocese. If you never contributed to the Catholic Appeal,
please do so this February. If you supported this appeal in the
past, please prayerfully consider what amount you might be
able to pledge next year. We only need to raise $145,000.

“Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of

For this Synod, a more ample consultation will be helpful;

We are so lucky to be safe and warm after the weekend of
storms which struck Illinois. Many people want to help and
do not know what to do. We have been in contact with
teachers in the town of Washington, and they said that they
are in need of children’s clothing and books. If you would
like to donate anything to help the victims, please send it to
school and we will deliver it to the appropriate people. The

presented by the Acting I class
December 9 at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30p.m. in the auditorium.
This show is sponsored in conjunction with the Macy's “Make
-A-Wish” campaign. For each letter to Santa brought to the
performance, Macy's will donate $1 to the campaign.

College students and other young alums are invited to
gather with friends for pizza and trivia. A
suggested donation of $5 will be collected at the door.
Preparing your children to celebrate First Eucharist, First
Reconciliation and Confirmation takes only awareness and a
bit of God's grace.
Eucharist
The best preparation for First Communion is to help your child know
and love Jesus. Tell your child your
favorite Jesus story in your own
words. Visit a bookstore and find an
illustrated book of bible stories and
read one each week before First
Communion. Ask your child to retell the story in his/her own words.
Have your child call grandparents
and ask them to tell a favorite Jesus
story.
Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the Sacraments of
Healing (Anointing of the Sick is the other one). Ask your child
to think of a time that they experienced a hurt and ask how the
healing happened.
Confirmation
Your child is learning that Confirmation is the third Sacrament
of Initiation (Baptism and Eucharist are the other two). Bring
out photos of your child's Baptism and tell the story of that day.
Ask your child to explain how the two Sacraments are connected. Remind them that at both ceremonies they are anointed with
the same oil (Chrism).
Some Small Liturgical Changes
As the new church year begins with the first Sunday of
Advent, some liturgical changes have been introduced at
St. Catherine.
1) The Offertory Gift table will now be positioned in the
middle of church. Two servers will come down to the
gift table and lead the profession of the gifts of bread
and wine to the altar. In the past, with the gift table
up front, there was no real procession of the gifts, and
rather than being presented, the gifts were “handed
off” to the priest.
2) The announcements will now be made after
Communion. With the announcements previously
being made before Mass, many people were not
hearing the announcements, and Mass was starting
late.
3) Eucharistic Ministers, as they come forward, will now
be asked to sanitize their hands. Dispensers will be
available on pedestals in front of the first pews.
