Through the Protecting God’s Children program, efforts are made to help churches and religious organizations refine their roles as child-safe environments and empower caring adults to protect children. Child abusers seek to operate and abuse their power within nurturing, child-friendly environments where it is assumed that nobody would want to harm a child. Religious organizations are an easy target. The Protecting God's Children program implements safety mechanisms that send a message to all abusers and potential abusers. Maximizing a church's role as a child-safe environment begins with making adults more aware of the ways children and adults interact with each other. The Protecting God's Children program educates and trains adults (clergy, religious, teachers, staff, volunteers, and parents) about the dangers of abuse, the warning signs of abuse, the ways to prevent abuse, the methods of properly reporting suspicions of abuse, and responding to allegations of abuse. We begin by making adults of the Church that interact with children aware of how to protect them by reminding them that to protect children you must have continuous awareness and vigilance. This awareness session helps trainees understand the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods and means by which offenders commit abuse, and five empowerment steps one can use to prevent child sexual abuse. ***************************************************************** If you would like to volunteer, in any capacity at St. Catherine’s (or any diocesan parish), please plan on attending a required VIRTUS session. We will hold three sessions here prior to the Carnival for those who would like to help. May 3 May 24 June 28 All sessions are held in the Lucey Parish Hall at 7:00 p.m. and a light dinner will be provided. Please take advantage of this great opportunity! Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. Lucey Parish Hall This is the fifth year we’re offering “The Corner Office Perspective.” And whether you’re seeking your next career opportunity, want to get an insider’s perspective of how business “gets done,” or simply want to network with community members with common life interests - this is an event for you. As before, The Corner Office Perspective will feature an “off the record” panel discussion with a group of multifunctional senior business executives from the St. Catherine community working in such fields as Not-forProfit, Consumer Products, Education, and Financial Services. This will be an interactive evening and topics we expect to cover include: Personal business life experiences, successes, challenges, and insights gained as job seekers, hiring managers, and business executives - to include “aha!” moments How their organizations make hiring decisions? Where are the best areas for job growth - in their organizations and the economy? What they, and their organizations, seek in a new employee? Any other business-related questions that you, as attendees might, want to ask. A 6:30 p.m. networking reception will be held prior to the event. The presentation will be moderated by Jack Blessington, Executive Producer at CBS and member of the SCSC Steering Committee. Says Jack, “We expect this to be another informative and fun evening. And we’re happy to once again combine a job market discussion with a networking event - and to draw on the expertise of some truly talented people from our community.” To reserve a space at the SCSC table, RSVP to event chairperson Celeste Robledo at celesterobledo@gmail.com. St Catherine’s Support Circle was formed in early 2009 to support people seeking jobs in the current challenging economic environment. The group continues to encourage participation by both job seekers and those interested in providing their advice and support. To read about helpful information and recommended resources for job seekers, visit the parish web site www.stcath.org, first link to Community Life, and then link to the SCSC page. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL "Going for the Gold" July 25 - 29, 2016 We're excited to host a Vacation Bible School this summer for kids in grades 1 - 5 (for the 2015-16 school year). As the Olympics are looming, join Sam Kaufmann to explore Paul's quote "I have run the race" through drama and music in a unique and fun way. At the end of the week, the children will present a play based on this "Going for the Gold" theme. Samantha Kaufmann is a singer, songwriter and recording artist from the San Francisco Bay area. She has developed over fifty theme based programs based on Scripture, supported by her original music, stories, poetry and dramas. Her book "The Story of the Little Star" is used nationally for Christmas pageants. Join us for a great week of music, crafts, drama and fun! Please visit our website www.stcath.org to register today. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” Gospel Reflection John 14:23-29 In the gospel today, Jesus continues to speak about love. Those who live will experience God's love in their lives and the gift of peace that only Christ can give. Jesus also promises to send the Paraclete, or the Comforter, to his disciples. The Paraclete is the Holy Spirit, who will guide the Church for all time. Jesus' followers will not be left on their own. Question of the Week: Who are the people who have helped you believe? Whom do you help? Family Discussion Questions for the Gospel If Jesus' gift to us is peace, why do we so often lack peace in our hearts, in our homes, and in our world? What does loving Jesus and being true to his word have to do with the gift of peace that he promises? We believe that God is Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The sign of the cross that we pray so often affirms our faith. One day this week, be aware of yourself as a child of God the Father. How does this affect you, your attitudes, your prayers? Another day, be aware of the gift of Jesus to us. How does this affect you, your attitudes, your prayers? Another day, be aware of the Comforter, God the Holy Spirit, that Jesus promised. How does this awareness of the Spirit affect you, your attitudes, your prayers? If you have any thoughts or questions about today’s Gospel, or any questions, let me know at deacon.howe@stcath.org. I’d love to hear from you. Thought for the week “He/she who throws dirt loses ground.” It’s Carnival Time! July 12 through July 16, 2016 Service Hours Opportunities - a fun way to accumulate hours!!
