LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Dear AzQHA members and friends,
Dear AzQHA Members and Arizona Quarter Horse
readers,
We have a busy summer ahead with many events
planned. On July 7-10 the Youth Excellence Seminar
(YES) will be held in College Station, Texas. We
would like to wish the best of luck to Monica Hamm
and Arizona Parker, who will be running for national
directors at the seminar. Good luck girls! On August
2-10, the AQHYA World Show will be held in Oklahoma
City. Arizona is sending a staggering 24 competitors
and 47 horses. On July 19-20, Carol and Ray Belmore
will be hosting the latest Trail Challenge in Skull Valley,
AZ. On July 24-27, the Tall Pines Quarter Horse Show
will make its debut in Flagstaff. The show will consist
of Reining, Roping and Cowhorse classes. We wish
Garret Cooper and his crew the very best and hope this
will become an annual event. On August 22-30, the
Select World Show will be held in Amarillo, Texas. On
September 6, Westworld will host the latest in our single
day scholarship shows. On September 24-28 The
Arizona Fall Championship Show returns to Westworld.
With world -class facilities and flat fee format, we are
confident that it will provide one of the finest exhibitor’s
experiences anywhere. Following close on its heels
is the Novice Championship Show at the South Point
in Las Vegas, Nevada. On November 1-2, SAQHA
will host its fall show in Queen Creek. We would like
to wish all of the exhibitors the best of luck at these
upcoming shows.
The AZQHA Board of Directors has a few new faces
this year – Shadd Parkinson, Dana Yingling, Suzy
Jeane, and Carol Belmore were elected to serve on
the board. We would like to wish them all the very best
and to thank them for their dedication and service. We
are very excited about our current board of directors
and hope to continue to serve the AZQHA members in
the best way possible. We will have an opening for a
national director for AQHA as Dorn Parkinson will be
moved to Director at Large. Please check the magazine
for more details if you or someone you know might be
interested in that position.
Finally, I would like to thank our outgoing president, Dr.
Barbara Truex for the time and dedication she has put
into the position over the last two years.
That’s all for now. Here’s wishing everyone a great
summer.
Sincerely,
Curt Fender
Curt Fender
I hope you never tire of hearing about the first AQHYA
World Show in Amarillo, TX in 1972, which I attended.
I never tire of talking about it. As it was for me, and
the thousands who came after me, it remains a life
changing experience. I hope this issue gives you a feel
for what the show means today, for our Arizona group
of phenomenal kids. It has been a long journey for the
Quarter Horse since that first AJQHA Finals in Amarillo,
to the spectacular show it is today in Oklahoma City.
Thank you, AzQHA, for championing the Arizona youth
and this magazine. AzQHA is the longest running class
sponsor for the AQHYA World Show, sponsoring the
Trail class in the very first one. Also, thanks to you, our
advertisers….. for continuing to support The Arizona
Quarter Horse magazine. It is a labor of love for all
involved.
Don’t miss that deadline, Aug 31, 2014.

KAYLEE NAYLOR
My name is Kaylee Naylor, I’m thirteen years old, and was born
and live in Scottsdale, Arizona. My dad, Brent Naylor, NRHA
professional, is my trainer, and my mom was a Hunter/ Jumper
trainer. Horses have always been a major part of my life and I love
them all. I travel with my parents to all the shows, or fly in with my
grandparents for the weekends, because I go to El Dorado School,
and carry a heavy academic load. I recently won the High Point
Youth 13 & Under Kyle Wood Perpetual Trophy at the Cactus Classic
Reining on Peppy As Einstein. I have also qualified for the AQHA
Youth World and AQHA Nov. Youth Championships on Genuine
Rollback and Peppy As Einstein. They are both 18 years old and
still going strong, but we will be retiring Rolley and Einstein this
year. We have a couple of four year olds that my dad is getting
ready for me for next year. I started in the NRHA Reining in
2009 and have been champion or reserve every year in a youth
division in our state along with many show championships. I love
my horses and all the time I get to spend with them. I also love
to draw and take pictures of all them, feed treats and trail ride!!

GARRETT HERSBERGER
Hello, my name is Garrett Hershberger. I am twelve years old and
next year will be a 7th grader at Verrado Middle School, where I
am a member of the National Jr. Honor Society. I will be showing
in Breakaway, Heading, and Heeling. I have been rodeoing over
the last few years. This year, I was able to compete in the AZ
Junior High Rodeo Association, winning Reserve for the year in
the Team Roping, and was named AZ Junior High Rookie of the
Year. I qualified and am competing this summer at the National
Jr. High Rodeo Finals in Des Moines, Iowa. Besides roping, I like
to collect guns and knives, fish, hunt, and play football with my
friends. I am a First Class Scout in Boy Scouts of America. Like my
brothers, I raise and show a swine project at the Maricopa County
Fair every year. I am really looking forward to showing at the
Youth World for the first time.

GABRIELLA SALAMONE
Hi! My name is Gabriella Salamone and I’m showing
in the Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, and Trail
events at the Youth World this year. I got my horse,
The Best Cookie (Elvis), in April with just enough
time to get qualified through the state for my last
youth year. He’s known as being the cutest horse in
our barn and he’s such a sweetheart. I’m so lucky to
have him in my life and I can’t wait to see what the
future holds for us! I’m proud to be a member of
the Arizona Youth Association and I want to thank
Connie Hay for everything she’s
done as our youth advisor; I don’t
know what we would have done
without her. I’d also like to thank
my wonderful trainers, Jim and
Deanna Searles, for making me
feel like not only a valued client,
but a member of their family; I
love you guys! Shout out to my
school, ASU, for being the best
college in the state of Arizona.
Go Devils! I hope everyone has
a fun and successful show, I’ll be
rooting for all of you!
JACLYN LANDERS
Hi my name is Jaclyn Landers and I am a senior at Prescott High School.
My horse’s name is “BMQ Decked In Chrome”, (Decker). My proudest
achievements would be winning reserving champion in both Hunter Under
Saddle and Equitation at the 2013 Novice Championships West. Another
proud moment would be when I won the title of “Novice Youth All-Around”
for Arizona in 2013. This will be our first trip to the AQHYA World. We will be
competing in Performance Halter Geldings, Showmanship, Western Pleasure,
Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, and Equitation. Thank you to my
trainers, Debbie, Andrea, Ryan, and Bob Kail for helping me achieve my goals
and push Decker and me to be the best we can be. I would also like to thank
my mom, grandma, and brother, Andrew, for their love and support. Good luck
to everyone at the show!

Hi, my name is Sam Oden. I am sixteen
years old, and in the fall will be a junior
at Prescott High School. This will be my
sixth year attending the Youth World Show
in Oklahoma City. I will be showing three

Outside of the AQHA I enjoy competing in Arizona High School

also spend a lot of my time working on my family’s ranches in
Williams, AZ and in eastern New Mexico. On the ranch in Williams
I have my own small herd of Hereford cows.
There’s no way I could have gotten to this point without a lot of
help. I would like to give a big thanks to Jim Walkley. He has
been there to help me with my practice almost every day for the
past year. I can always count on him to be waiting with my horses

would also like to thank Travis Bard, who has put countless hours
into helping me with my roping.

be roping this year at the Youth World as well. I won an AQHYA
World Championship in the Heeling in 2012, riding Malo Gato.
I am excited to show him again at the Youth World this year. I
am also a member of the AZ High School Rodeo Association. At
school, I really enjoy my broadcast classes. I like taking pictures,
video, and turning them into video clips. Like my brothers, I
raise and show a swine project at the Maricopa County Fair. I
am a Boy Scout and about to work on my Eagle project. Besides
these activities, I like to work cattle, fish, hunt, and just be in the
outdoors. Good luck to all the AZ Youth Team!
Thank you to the AQHA and the AZQHYA for giving me the
opportunity to show my horses this year. Good luck to all the

My greatest achievements in Reining are being the Novice Youth
Reining Circuit Champion, Youth Reining Reserve Champion
at the Arizona Sun Country Circuit and the Rookie Maturity
Champion at the Cactus Reining Classic. My horse ‘Coco’ has
allowed me to improve my abilities as a rider, and to lead the
way to some very important accomplishments with many more to
come. My past and current trainers and my horse have not been
the only reasons for my success. My parents have also made
an impact on me and have supported my wildest dreams since
day one. Without them, I would not have been able to reach
my ultimate goal of showing at the AQHYA World Show. I feel
honored to have their support. I want to thank everyone for all
that they have done. I am determined to do my best and have
fun while achieving my dreams!

the veteran Joses T Chex. “Chex” was a “been there-done that”
kind of horse that taught her the ropes and readied her for her
next horse, In It For The Chics. “Trace”, as she calls him, has taken
her to many wins in the NRHA 13 & under, as well as capturing
the 2013 AQHA Novice Youth World Champion in the Reining.
She will be competing at the 2014 AQYHA World show on three
horses in the Reining; Joses T Chex, In It For The Chics and Lucky

Kate Buchanan
KATE BUCHANAN
Kate has been horse crazy since birth. She started riding her
Shetland pony “Rocky” when she was three, and never looked
back. While living in Texas, Kate competed in Eventing, and was
very involved in pony club. She was game to try anything, and
also did a little cutting and roping with her dad. Three years ago,
she and her family moved to Arizona where she continued to
compete in Eventing, as well as some jumper shows. Two years
ago, while helping her dad, she found herself out at Matt Mills’
training facility and watched some of first reining horses. She
thought that this might be fun to try. Matt allowed her to come
and ride some of his training horses, and she was hooked! Under
GAVIN HERSHBERGER
Hi, my name is Gavin Hershberger. I am 11 years old and will
be a 6th grader at Verrado Middle School in the fall. I will be
showing in Breakaway, Heading, and Heeling. I have been
going to Jr. Rodeos for the last few years. I won the Year End
All-Around in the Queen Creek Jr. Rodeo Association last year,
and this year I was Reserve for the All-Around. Besides roping,
I love to fish, hunt, and play baseball. I also like to show pigs. I
was the Jr. Showmanship Champion at the Maricopa County
Fair last year and this year I showed the Champion Spot. I have
been a member of Student Council the last few years and was
in the National Elementary Junior Honor Society. I am excited
to be showing at the AQHYA Youth World Show for the first time,
representing Arizona.

BRIDGET CALLAGHAN
My name is Bridget Callaghan and I am twelve
years old. I live in Tucson, Arizona. I attend Emily
Gray Jr. High and I will be entering the 7th grade
I am active in the AQHYA, SABRA, CCOBRA, 4-H, and several other clubs. I have been
riding horses since I was two and I go to barrel races almost every weekend. I have
won nineteen belt buckles and six saddles. One special buckle I won last year is
from the AzQHA for first place in Barrels, Stakes and Poles. We also won the Justin
Boot Rookie of the year for Arizona. I attended the AQHA Novice Championship
Show in Las Vegas where Drifter and I won the Poles and Stake race. In April I
competed in the Mission View State Show, winning the championship saddle in the
11-14 age group. This past June, I attended a Martha Josey Clinic in Texas, where I
won the 1D barrel race, running a 17.039, and was lucky enough to win a Martha
Josey Circle Y saddle for coming in first.
This is my 3rd year going to the youth world show. I will compete in Barrels,
Poles and the Stakes Race. I want to thank AzQHA for allowing me this amazing
opportunity to represent Arizona at the show. I can’t wait to see what Drifter
and I can do this year at the Youth World Show. I wish good luck to my Arizona
teammates.
I am very lucky to have a great support team to help me become a better rider.
I work with my trainer, Adam Bradley, to keep me and my horse in shape both
mentally and physically. I would also like to thank my Mom and Dad for giving
me the opportunity to participate in all the equine activities that I am involved in,
and providing me with great horses to ride. I would also like to thank my family
for flying all the way from New Jersey to show their support for me; Aunt Sharon,
Uncle Michael, Denise and especially my Grandma Callaghan.
HALEY SOLUM
My family has always been
involved in the horse business,
but I didn’t really start riding
until about 4 ½ years ago. I
had ridden our Shetland ponies
a few times but never felt
confident enough to ride the
Reining horses that my family
owned. In the summer of 2009,
Haley Solum
I was visiting my family’s good
friends, Brian and Kim Welman. They run Brian Welman Training Stables in River
Falls, WI. For some reason, Brian thought that it was time I tried riding a “reiner”.
Believe it or not, the first horse I rode was a stallion. Actually, the only horses I rode
that summer were stallions that had successful show careers. I fell in love with one

of those stallions and my parents agreed to buy him if
he was gelded. So the amazing Down Town Mega Brown
became my first show horse.
Because my father, David Solum, is very involved in the
horse industry, I often traveled with him to horse shows.
I went to my first National Reined Cow Horse show in
September of 2012. This was a whole new game and I
felt the excitement of working cow horses and got the
fever to try that. Russell Dilday, (a well-known trainer,
exhibitor and three time World’s Greatest Horseman),
was very instrumental in getting me started in that
event. The problem was that I didn’t have a cow horse.
However, my sister’s retired reining horse, Concentrated
Juice, was still sound and I tried him on cattle in
December of 2013. He is by Smart Like Juice and out of
a Dry Doc bred mare, so we assumed he would be “cowy”.
Even though he is 14 years old, he began his new career
with enthusiasm. I showed him for the first time at the
Sun Circuit in Scottsdale AZ in January of 2014. We
competed in Youth Boxing and I was lucky enough to
become Circuit Champion. Does the retired “reiner” like
his new sport? It is not always easy to tell, as you never
know when he might “break in two”, bucking. Everyone
gets a kick out of his shenanigans and he definitely
keeps things exciting.
With the help of Brad Barkemeyer, I have honed my
skills in Boxing, but have also started showing in Ranch
Pleasure. I never imagined that not only would I be
showing a Working Cow Horse, but going to my first
AQHYA World Show. This opportunity is beyond exciting
for me and I have been preparing since I found out that
I could go with the Arizona Youth Team. I’m not sure
what to expect, except that I know it will be the ride of a
lifetime.

High School rodeo Reserve National Champion Header,
AQHYA World Show Reserve World Champion in the
Heading, Arizona High School Rodeo State Champion
Boy Cutter. My favorite horse is Sailing With Tejon aka

In 2012, I participated
at Youth World with my horse Coloured Assets, or as I call her, Majumba.
I competed in Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation, and while
I did not make it past the prelims, it was an amazing and unforgettable
experience. Over the past two years, I have been working hard with
my trainer towards improving my skills and my horse’s training. This
year, I will be competing in Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation
and Western Horsemanship. I am really looking forward to this year’s
competition and super excited to make new friends and memories.
While I am not sure what the results will be for me at this show, I am
mainly focusing on learning more about myself, my horse, and having
fun with other youth members. I would like to thank God and my amazing
family for giving me unconditional love, support, and the opportunity to

BRENDAN BROWN – VICE PRESIDENT
Brendan grew up in southwestern Colorado where he began showing horses in 4-H
at age nine. By the time he became a teenager, Brendan knew that training horses
would be his life’s ambition. After graduating High School, Brendan set out to
apprentice under the top trainers in the country. One being Pete Kyle, who was then
in Scottsdale. Even though life pulled Brendan away from Arizona, he know on day
he would return. In late 2010 that opportunity arose and he moved back to Cave
Creek to train All Around horses and coach youth and amateur riders. Brendan also
is an AQHA, NSBA and APHA judge. Brendan
says, “I really enjoy being involved in AzQHA,
it is such a great organization. I am looking
forward to the future on the EC Board.”
Brendan Brown
DORN PARKINSON – TREASURER
Dorn Parkinson is returning to a position he has held before with AzQHA
after a brief hiatus, having served as Treasurer on and off for the past
ten years. Dorn, Debbie and Shadd Parkinson moved to Arizona in
1997, having bred and shown horses successfully in Montana. Dorn
was President of an extensive holding company at the time and decided
to move to Kirkland, Arizona, beginning the Parkinson Quarter Horse
Legacy. Dorn became President of AzQHA in 2007. Dorn has earned over
5000 AQHA Halter Points in Open and Amateur classes showing horses
that he has bred and raised. Parkinson Quarter Horses has been on
numerous AQHA all-time leading breeder lists for the past decade.

Dale was born in Dodge City, Kansas, “Quite a while ago”,
as he puts it. He lived in Pretty Prairie, Kansas through the
third grade. A bit of trivia, Pretty Prairie has been the home of
the largest night rodeo for more than seventy-five years. His
family then moved to Nickerson, Kansas where he attended
and graduated from Nickerson Rural High School before
moving on to Kansa State. Dale moved to Phoenix in 1975
and remained in the men’s clothing business until late 2012.
Now retired, he has found, as his wife Karen puts it, “his new
community” in the American Quarter Horse industry. Dale
says, “Whether you wish to thank or blame them for my
presence here, credit goes to Al Dunning, Brad Barkemeyer,
and Dr. Barbara Truex.”

Michele Pearson has been a professional horse trainer and judge
for over thirty-five years. Michele is AAAA rated AQHA judge,
she is also carded with the NRHA, NSBA and APHA. Showing

BACK IN THE DAY

I’ve tried very hard to break the mold of family
hoarding (although I have been grateful from
time to time, via eBay, for being able to unload
some really off the wall items). I had no pangs,
for instance, over tossing six large leaf bags of
ribbons my mom had saved and some of the
trophies as well. I wish now that I had thought
to donate the trophies to local organizations
for repurposing, but it never occurred to me.
The one that was shaped like a hammered

get there first. Naturally, this, coupled with an arena that was only
slightly less under water than Lost Atlantis (you’d have thought
we were in Santa Barbara), and no place to school, created some
anxiety for my trainer. I didn’t know enough to be anxious….I
just did what I was told. So in the fifteen minutes or so before they
cleared the ring to start the class, she put a bit of baling wire under
the leather strap for schooling purposes. I suppose it was to make
him think that actually stopping before getting to the ends of the

“Now, when I yell ‘snatch him’, you SNATCH HIM”. Unfortunately
for me, the last time she yelled it was as I was on my way out the

parking lot. It was like a new ride at Disneyland…a real E Ticket.

to see one or two shots that were slightly below par, but for the
most part, they confirmed what I always knew…..that Tim was
an exceptional horseman. In addition to being the best, he was
also a gentleman and a true sportsman. Even our mothers liked
him. I have always believed that winning graciously is no great

THE PARKER FAMILY
ALL FOR ONE
The Parker family is submersed in horses, horse shows, horse people and a ‘horsey
life’ even though Arizona seems to be the only one who is actually showing horses.
Arizona’s parents, Sunny and Steve Parker and her brothers Paul, Daniel and Brian
support her every step of the journey. Or every mile, as they are all driving back to
see Arizona show at her second AQHYA World show. The first time was in 2012 and
Sunny explained, “We were really unprepared for what was waiting for us back
there. We had never been to that big a show before. Riding at midnight, having
to check the bits before going in the arena, it was all new and a little scary, to be
honest.” This time will be different. Having been there before, Arizona feels ready
for anything that is handed out. For her and her family the most important thing
about the Youth World show is “just being there”.
Quarter Horse Magazine: What does it mean to the Parker family that Arizona
will be showing at the AQHYA World show this year?
Parker family: “It means everything! It means that hard work and persistence
pays off. We cannot compete financially as far as horses and clothes. Arizona knew
this going in, and it just made her buckle down and work all the harder. She knew
that her family believed in her, so she started believing in herself. She has done a
remarkable job all the while maintaining a 4.029 GPA. This will be a phenomenal
experience for all of us.”
QHM: How did you get started with horses? Did your family have any interest
before Arizona started with horses?
PF: “None of us had ever been around them,” Sunny said. “I liked to wear high
heels and hated getting dirty.” One day Arizona uncharacteristically said to her
Parker AZ and Paul:
Arizona and brother Paul
mother, “Let’s go to this garage sale over here.” So they
stopped and Arizona jumped out of the car and ran up
the lady and asked, “Do you have horses, do you give
lessons?” And so it started from there. “It was a life
changing event. It has altered the course of Arizona’s
future. She wants to pursue a career as a veterinarian,
or some field in the equine industry.”
Sunny Parker says that horse people are a special
breed. When there is a tragedy they all come together
to help those in need. “It has an ‘old school’ feel to the
friendships that we have made. The kids help each
other out in the arena and there is never any jealousy.
Win, lose or draw they are just best friends.”
QHM: What is the one best thing that has happened
to your family since entering the horse world family?
PF: “It is impossible to name just one thing. This horse
experience has taught Arizona that discipline, loyalty,
perseverance, honesty, a work ethic and helping
others are what makes a life worthwhile. It is not about
winning or losing, it’s the entire journey.”
Your Arizona family will be riding along with every step
of your journey, Arizona. Good luck and have fun.

RIDE
REPORT
By Carol Belmore
Tonto Mountain Ranch, home of Carol and Ray Belmore, was the host for the
June AQHA Trail Challenge and AQHA Trail Ride on June 14th & 15th. A record
28 entries attended and competed in two completely different courses with
sixteen obstacles in each. Saturday’s course was laid out in the flat around
the ranch, consisting of backing, side passing, climbing Tire Mountain and
walking through water. Sunday’s course took off up Tonto Mountain where
the natural obstacles were judged along the trail. A tricky gate and bridge also
took their toll on some.

THE HERSHBERGER FAMILY
TWO GENERATIONS AT THE YOUTH WORLD
Jason and Nikki Hershberger are taking
their three sons, Wyatt, Garrett and
Gavin, and six horses to the 2014 AQHYA
World show in Oklahoma City! Wyatt has
been in previous years, but this will be
the first time that all three of the boys
will be showing at the same time. And
of course their father will be there on
the “other end” for each one of them.
All are showing in Heading, Heeling and
Breakaway roping, and Wyatt will also
be showing in Tie Down Roping. This is
a special story about a special family
continuing a chapter that was started
years ago.
Jason Hershberger was practically born
in the saddle. He certainly cut his teeth
at AQHA World Shows watching his father
Jon compete. Jason stated roping in
AQHA Youth classes and first competed at
the AQHYA World show in 1982. Growing up in Utah, Nikki Williams also grew up around horses and first competed
at the AQHYA World Show in 1986. In 1990 Nikki was elected to the AQHYA Executive Board, her last year in youth.
While Jason made the trip back to Ft. Worth to show until 1989, they did not really see their future together until
they met again in 1992 at the Cowan Ranch in Ogden, UT. They both went to work for Pete Kyle, who was managing
the Cowan Ranch at the time. Jason and Nikki were married in 1995.
As the boys grew up, they became accomplished ropers like their father and grandfather. As a family, they continued
to show at AQHA shows but also added the Jr. Rodeo circuit to their calendar. And with three Jr. Rodeo associations,
Arizona Jr. Rodeo Association, Queen Creek Jr. Rodeo Association and Jr and High School Rodeo Association, the
Hershbergers were gone almost every weekend of the month to a rodeo or horse show. Nikki says, “Traveling together
as a family was just the best. The Jr. Rodeos gets the whole family involved. For instance in Ribbon Roping, the boys
would rope, Jason would mug and I would run. It was so much fun, and such a great environment to raise kids in.”
The boys are also avid hunters and are involved in other activities, but the horses always seem to take precedence.
Jason says one of the best things about the AQHYA World show is the entire experience; the preparation, packing
the trailer, driving back and getting ready to show. “It’s about making memories, making a difference in your kids’
lives”, Jason explains. “This is a pretty amazing time for us as a family.” Nikki explains how much harder it will be
for her to watch her boys compete that was for her to actually show. “I won’t have any control sitting in the stands. It
is such a different feeling to watch your kids show. I will be a nervous wreck.”
Good luck to the Hershberger family, all three generations, as Grandma and Grandpa will surely sitting in the stands
cheering on their ‘boys’ as well.

AQHA WILL ELECT A NEW DIRECTOR FROM ARIZONA IN 2015
At the 2015 AQHA Convention in Ft Worth, Texas the AQHA Board of Directors will elect a new Director to represent Arizona. The reason
for the vacancy is current AQHA Director, Dorn Parkinson, will be elevated to Director Emeritus status. Affiliate state associations will
have some influence with the Board, meaning that is usually necessary to have the backing of your state Affiliate to successfully be
elected.
For further clarification read the entire AQHA rules regarding AQHA Directors. The following was taken directly from the AQHA
Handbook and should help explain the position.
As a not-for-profit organization, AQHA relies on leadership from its board of directors, which is a group of elected individuals who
receive no reimbursement for their services, other than the satisfaction of representing the world’s largest equine breed association.
Any member in good standing with AQHA is eligible to serve as a director for an elected term of one year. The nomination process
begins with the submission of a properly completed application accompanied by a photo, all of which is sent to me prior to February 1
of the convention year. Current directors seeking re-election are exempt from this procedure.
Applications are then presented at the annual convention to the AQHA Nominations and Credentials Committee.
The Nominations and Credentials Committee reviews each directorship and votes on each director during its committee meeting at
convention. During the general membership meeting at convention, the Nominations and Credentials Committee chairman presents
the slate of nominations for directors, followed by the AQHA president’s call for nominations from the floor. Any nominations from
the floor must have been previously presented to the Nominations and Credentials Committee for consideration. Additionally,
nominations from the floor for a director position are received to oppose another nominated person. Should nominations occur from
the floor, a vote will be taken among members present to decide the directorship in question. The final recommendation for directors
is made to AQHA’s membership during the Nominations and Credentials Committee’s report and subject to affirmative vote by the
membership in attendance at the convention.
Here are the other members who have a lifetime tenure on the AQHA Board of Directors:
• AQHA Past Presidents
• Director Emeritus is an individual who has served as an elected director, international district director or appointed international director for 10 cumulative years, and who is 65 years of age.
• Director-At-Large is an individual who has served 15 cumulative terms as an elected director, international district director or appointed international director.
• Honorary Vice President is an individual who is given the title based on distinguished service to AQHA.
Current AQHA Directors and their status are as follows:
• C W ‘Bill’ Englund Jr. (Past President)
• Rick C Johns (Past President)
• Billy L Cress (Director at Large)
• Al Dunning (Director at Large)
• Suzy Jeane (Director at Large)
• Laurel Walker Denton (Director at Large)
• Walter L Kimes (Director Emeritus)
• Dorn Parkinson
• Carol L Whittaker
• J Lloyd Yother
If you have any interest in pursuing the office of an AQHA Director or have any questions as how to proceed, contact the AzQHA office
or any current Arizona Director. Deadline for submissions is December 31, 2014.

ALEXANDRA FULLER
AWARDED 2014 AzQHA SCHOLARSHIP
Ali has been riding since the age of five. In showing POA’s (Pony of the Americas) at the age of 10, which allowed her to experience
nearly all disciplines from showmanship to barrel racing, she exhibited her pony in almost every event, under the instruction of
Samantha Walker. After riding various types of horses, from Shetland ponies to Warmbloods, and loved the versatility of the POA,
she fell in love with the Quarter Horse. Ali began showing AQHA when she purchased Cash and Treasure in 2012. She has shown
Cash and Treasure (Trey), at the local, regional, and national level. Ali takes pride in doing the majority of Trey’s training herself,
with supplemental instruction from the Arizona Cowboy College. She currently rides primarily with the Arizona Cowboy College and
Christy Snyder of Hold Your Horses Equestrian, but has also worked with Samantha Walker, Mark Sheridan, Randy Tucker, Brandi
Lyons, and the Joni Fitts School of Horsemanship. Ali hopes to take the skills that she has learned from her outstanding instructors
to the hilltop in Dallas, Texas, where she will be competing for the Southern
Methodist University equestrian team.
When she is not riding, maintaining her grades, or working at the Animal
Clinic Del Rancho, she enjoys on-film acting.
Ali would like to express her gratitude on being awarded the Arizona Quarter
Horse Youth Scholarship, and will be using it to help pay tuition at Southern
Methodist University, majoring in Biomedical Sciences. She plans to become
a large animal veterinarian, specializing in the utilization of veterinary
medicine to help improve the health and performance of horses, and thanks
AzQHA for the “leg up”!
