Heartline New Monmouth Baptist Church
New Monmouth Baptist Church Heartline Editor Bill Roberts www.nmbchurch.org Dear Friends, If you have read the book of Esther, you will be reminded that influential people don't always become influential without the help of someone behind the scenes. These unknown and often unrecognized heroes, are the ones who often play a significant role in the shaping and molding of the heroes of yesterday and today. Who is better known, Mordecai or Esther? And yet without the faithful, selfless service of Mordecai who took upon himself the raising of Esther whose mother and father had died, there would have been no Jewish deliverance. Esther, instead of becoming Queen Esther, might have been just another member of King Xerxes' harem. Don't be discouraged if you are not seeing immediate fruits in your ministry. I have to continually be reminded of that for as a pastor you want to see the pews bursting with people, the budget going over the top, and a good number of people responding to the invitation to accept Christ each Sunday. I think that is the hope and dream of most pastors. However, you never know the influence you are having, and while the impact of your efforts may not be immediate, God sees your efforts through a long range perspective. So hang in there parent, teacher, lay person, and yes, pastor and just keep on plugging, for whether you see it or not, you are making an imprint on the lives of those you serve "A Christian man was walking to church one night when he encountered four boys loitering on the street corner. He invited them to go to the service with him. They did, and each of the boys also agreed to return to church with him the next Sunday. They became the nucleus of a Sunday School class the man began to teach. Years later, a group of the man's friends decided to try to contact the four boys to see what had happened in their lives and to invite them to write a special birthday letter to their teacher to be read at a surprise party. Their letters revealed that one of them had become a missionary to China, one was the president of the Federal Reserve Bank, one was the private secretary to President Herbert Hoover, and the fourth was President Hoover himself.” (p. 189 God's Little Devotional Book for Leaders.). June 2010 Who would have known the name David Brainerd, a pioneer missionary who died in 1747 at age 29? He had only a handful of Indian converts to show for his ministry. Had it not been for the writing of Jonathan Edwards, few people would have ever been impacted by his ministry. Edwards’ daughter was to have been married to Brainerd. The great theologian Jonathan Edwards began to write the story of that short life in a little book. That book about the life of Brainerd took wings, flew across the sea, and landed on the desk of Cambridge student Henry Martyn.(" Streams in the Desert, November 14). From there it passed eventually influencing the likes of missionaries Thomas Coke, William Carey and John Wesley. It was Wesley who said, "Let every preacher read over carefully the life of David Brainerd”, and he distributed his life story to all his missionary societies. It has been said that if you hold a handful of pine nuts in your hand today, you could not begin to predict which of the seeds might actually sprout and produce a giant tree. It is amazing that such a large tree might grow from such a small seed. The only way to tell which nuts have trees inside them is to plant them. When you plant acts of kindness and generosity to others you never know what tree might grow from that small seed. Be patient, and remember as one person has stated: 'You can count the number of seeds in an apple, but you can't count the number of apples in a seed.' Yours in faith, Pastor Tom Colossians 3:23-24 Youth Report, June 2010 First off, thank you all for welcoming me back for the summer! It was a pleasure working with the youth in this community last summer, and now I am very excited to spend another summer following the Lord’s instruction and encouraging our teens to know Christ’s will for their lives as NMBC’s summer intern. The first chance I got to speak to the youth group a few weeks ago we talked about John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life…” This verse has sparked a longer study that has lead the group to question, “If Christ is the only way, how does he instruct us to live?” The Scriptures have been challenging me weekly in my preparation and have been spurring the teens on to begin living lives worthy of the gospel. This summer the youth Sunday School class will be studying Philippians. Thursday night Youth Group has been making minor changes, where all of our incredible leaders are getting the opportunities to lead the group in all sorts of activities. The group will be going to New Mexico on a Missions Trip to work with the Navajo from July 10-17. We will be having a summer Beach Retreat in Ocean City, NJ on August 13-15. I am very excited to see how the Lord will grow this group. The teenagers are amazing! It is my desire to help them grow more in love with the Lord daily. We thank you all for your current and future prayers, we need them! The Youth Group now has a Facebook Page, “Like” the page so you can follow more closely what is happening with the group! The page’s name is: “New Monmouth Baptist Youth.” This will be a great tool of communication and organization for the group! Take advantage of it!! Nick D’Angelo 2 Summer 2010 Children’s Parable Quest is a 10-week adventure into the Amazon, to learn about the parables of Jesus. Starting June 27th-Aug.29th. Sunday school and Children’s church will be combined beginning at 10:00-12:15. So get ready, on your mark, get set, GROW. Summer Campfire Services For the second year, we will be holding outdoor Camp Fire services beginning July 11 and running through August 15. Services begin at 6:30 PM, and this year we have added a personal testimony to each service. Once again we will have a bonfire and a hay wagon, as members from our community come together to sing, worship and fellowship. July 11 Harry Flaherty, NY/NJ Director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes who will be joined by Lincroft Bible Church Praise Band. July 18 Pastor Bruce Koczman, pastor of Jesus Fellowship in Keansburg and Chapel Drive from the Zarephath Christian Church The Servants Story On May 19th the Pioneer kids and their families listened to the servant “Firstus” tell them the story of the Prodigal son. This story reveals the loyal love of a father, who lovingly welcomes back, his rebellious younger son and graciously points out the hardness of his older sons heart. God’s loyal love for us is amazing and His desire to bring us back into His arms is never ending. How can anyone resist the unconditional love of God? July 25 Keith Elias, former NFL player with the Giants and founder of Keith Elias Ministries and Waiting for the Flood, led by Keith's brother Brian. August 1 Alan Briggs, our former youth pastor and now pastor of the First Congregational Church of Chester and Oracle, led by Mark Caplan. August 8 Jeff Cuozzo former pastor with Calvary Chapel in England and Michael Maione of Resounding Joy. August 15 Bill Gorski, a successful New Jersey high school football coach who is now coaching at Delbarton High School and the Outreach Red Bank Praise and Worship Team. In case of rain we will be in the Family Ministry Center. Tell your friends about these services and plan to join us for as many of them as possible. Pastor Armando Quatela typed by Jillian Marcantonio 4 Sidewalk Project at Church Car Washing Crew For many Saturdays the young people planning to go to New Mexico this Summer have been washing cars at the church. Several others going on the trip, not pictured, were out in the street with signs encouraging cars driving by to stop in to have their car washed to help raise money needed for the trip. The Team will be going to work among the Indians living on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico from July 10th to the 17th. There will be three teams, first will be serving the children of the reservation through a Vacation Bible School program, the second is participating in building and repair projects and painting and the third team will be driving participants to VBS, purchasing supplies for the building team and shopping and cooking for the team. It will be an exciting time for the TEAM and they respectfully request that we pray for them. Each participant is required to raise $990.00 for the trip so perhaps there will be opportunities for us to give toward the trip. Gary Steidl will be leading the group. If you have any questions on how you might help the group you could ask Gary or any of the Bill Roberts youth pictured above. 5 2010 Graduates University /College Stanford University Palo Alto, Calif. Many of our neighbors have been bringing us meals, visiting, and offering their help, all because we became friends through Herbie. This, along with all the prayers that have been going up to heaven from around the world, have been humbling and encouraging. Truly, we serve an awesome God. He has not left us. We are in a difficult and some-what scary place at the moment, but He has indeed provided rest. We pray He will continue to lift our heads and that He will glorify Himself, which is our utmost desire. Thank you so much for your faithful support, prayers, friend-ship and concern. Report on Tom Simcox As many of you know, Tom has had a diagnosis of Stage 4 Mantle Cell Lymphoma. He has been to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas and is being treated at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. He has completed his first round of treatments and seems to be doing quite well after some problems when his white blood count dropped overnight. He continued with his second round of treatments on Monday, June 14th. Lorna is so thankful for all who have prayed for them during this time. They ask that you continue to pray that God will overrule and that Tom will have no side effects whatsoever. “You can’t keep a good man down! Tom set up shop in his hospital room and in the company of his two constant companions: his cell phone and his laptop!! Praise God he was feeling good and was able to work.” Lorna News from New Mexico The Oberholsers write that “we are excited about NMBC coming out this summer. I know that they will be a blessing to what is going on at the mission and I know that their lives with be blessed and encouraged by their trip. Bekah & I are hoping to get out a time or so to connect with the group while they are here. One encouraging thing to share about the Navajo BIC Mission, this past spring, 7 Navajo men went through their 90 day alcohol rehab program. Several of the men either made first time or recommitments to accept & follow Christ, and were baptized. One man had an amazing conversion experience in prison, before even coming to the program. Then while in the program he really began to grow in his walk with Christ. Though the summer work groups probably will not have any personal interaction with the men from the program. (Program only runs in the fall & spring). The group will still have the opportunity to impact the programs to come by the work they do on campus and by the prayers they offer up while there. Just thought I'd share this with you. Take care and have a great day!” Jason, for the family ——————————————— New additions to our Mission Families Chris and Megumi Risden are the proud parents of a new baby girl who arrived on May 10th. Please give Debbie Ketcham a call if you would like to be a part of the team. Some of the positions are prayer warrior, teacher, hostess, bakers, a nurse, newsletter editor, sound system, projection system, scenery, and many other things. Last year we had 55 team members on our staff. You will have a great time, and you will be blessed. For more information, contact Debbie Ketcham at the church office at 732-671-5998. 9 “Saved by the Blood” I hope the headline caught your eye – you surely owe your life to that sacrifice of our Lord long ago. But many among us owe our continued life on this earth now to the availability of human blood , transfused to augment losses due to accident, medical procedure, inadequate personal blood system performance or acts of war. And where does that life-sustaining fluid originate? Not from a plant, not from the veins of an animal, not from a laboratory or factory. It comes from the arms of willing donors wishing to pass along a selfrenewing gift to someone in need. That “someone” may be a member of NMBC, an injured serviceman returned from defending his country from terrorists – or from someone unknown to us, but known to HIM. I urge you to consider your own donation. Call the Central Jersey Blood Center 732 842 5750 Erwin Muller New Monmouth Baptist Church 4 Cherry Tree Farm Road New Monmouth, NJ. 07748 10
