WINTER 2015
POTENTATE’S MESSAGE
Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
It doesn't seem possible that this is my final Potentate Message. There is no way that this can be the winter KAABAGRAM. As I look at the thermometer, it reads well into the sixties, with highs in the seventies predicted for the next
couple days. Let's hope El Nino does its thing and gives us a really mild winter. This year has certainly been an eventful year. There were several ups and a couple downs, but definitely more positives than negatives. Let's review a few
events.
The Sportsman Raffle was a rousing success, as per usual. I don't have an official result on the numbers at this time.
If you'll recall, we had a little snowstorm in 2014 that definitely kept attendance down. Mother Nature smiled on us
this year and gave us a nice day. The only hiccup occurred when we tried to contact a raffle winner and his telephone
number was incorrect. I cannot stress enough how important it is to fill out the information completely and accurately. He wrote his name and phone number, but no address and we don't know who sold the ticket. I think that it's a
good idea that when you sell a ticket, write down your name on the back. That way we have a bit more information in
order to track down a potential winner. It's better to have too much information than not enough.
Columbus Day in Columbus Junction saw Mother Nature serving up another gem of a day. We had a Ceremonial in
the morning that saw a number of new Nobles created. I want to thank the Director's Staff for hosting another successful event. I also want to apologize to the Hillbillys for an unfortunate chain of events that led to my cancelling of
Hillbilly Days 2015. We'll all have a great time next year at Jeb's Park.
The Onion Sale was a huge disappointment this year and I'm not sure about the future of this annual event. Again,
there was a chain of events that led to this year’s debacle.
It was my pleasure to participate in numerous parades again this year. I want to thank my driver and personal aide
Bret McConahay for keeping the Caddy going and hauling me around.
The Potentate's Trip was certainly memorable. But, like they say, what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas.
I would encourage all you Nobles to support Chief Rabban Tom Hodges as he (hopefully) becomes the 2016 KAABA
Potentate. I am sure that he would welcome any and all ideas to help KAABA Shrine grow and prosper.
Lady Kathy and I look forward to seeing you all at the various Christmas parties throughout the next couple months.
In closing, and on a personal note: this year has literally flown by. As I said in my opening, I can't believe that this is
nearly the end. Lady Kathy and I have certainly enjoyed the last five years. To recap:
In 2011, we didn't have anyone interested in running for Oriental Guide. After much soul searching and several conversations with Lady Kathy, I decided to accept the position of OG. Over the intervening years, I have lost a couple jobs and suffered a stroke. Now, as 2015 draws to an end, I can't help but feel a bit melancholy. I couldn't have
come this far without Lady Kathy. Her love and support have meant the world to me. I will be forever grateful to her.
And the advice and encouragement from some Past Potentates has been very beneficial. I don't want to leave anyone
out, so I won't name individuals, but you know who you are.
Lady Kathy and I were also fortunate in that we have a great group of Counterparts. We've made some lifelong
friends.
Thank you, Nobles. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your Potentate for this year. Thank you, Lady
Kathy, for being my everything and making this year the success that it has been.
Lady Kathy and I want to wish each and everyone of you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving, and we
sincerely hope you have a Very Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year.

Yours in the Faith

WINTER 2015
Message from CHIEF RABBAN
Brethren,
It is hard to believe that another year is just about over. With the parade season behind us and the
holiday ahead we should take some time, and remember all that has happen. Such as the nobles that we
have lost this year to the black camel and those that just quit coming. We also should be looking at the
holidays as a joyful time, with family and friends. Let us take some time to help out neighbors it need, either with a help hand or words of encouragement. As we make our new year’s resolutions, try and remember to make one that you may be willing to keep.
As most of you know that our temple membership due increased ($10) ten dollars, along with the
Imperial Per Capital also increased ($15) fifteen dollars or your yearly dues total will be ($100) one hundred dollars per year. I my discussion with other temple most of them have all ready raised their dues before and considering increasing them again, I hope that we do not. You will not receive a due notice from
the Kaaba office, instead your notices will be coming from Imperial, as I understand you can either send in
a check, or pay on line using a credit card.
I am challenging ever member of Kaaba to find a new noble for the 2016 year. There will be two
ceremonials on the calendar for next year, we will add additional ceremonials, but there need to be at
least ten or more potential new noble will to travel to a designated location. Additional Kaaba stated meeting will also be traveling this year, by imperial regulation we can hold two stated meeting outside of the
temple. Provide me reasons to bring the temple stated meeting to your location. You will need a secure
location, hospitably, and nobility willing to attend. These can either be stag or with the ladies and a program will be required for the ladies.
Open positions within Kaaba that need filling for the 2016 year. First we need an Oriental Guide; so
far no noble has indicated that he would like to become the new OG for Kaaba temple. Yes it is a five year
comment, to yourself and your brothers within the shrine. Some travel is required so you can meet and get
to understand how Kaaba Shriners functions. There is also a need for a membership chairman along with
committee’s members. Their goal is to educate the clubs and units in how to retain, and seek new, members for out shrine. No one person can do it all. A team effort is the way to approach this task. As of the day
I am writing this article we have only 1001 member with in Kaaba, so the need is great, can you help?
Looking forward, what is ahead for Kaaba Shriners? January 9th 2016 at 2PM will be the stated
meeting, with installation of officer at 3 PM and a dinner to follow at 4 PM; RSVP will be required for this
dinner. Potentate Ball will be 30 and 31st of January 2016, details are in the Kaabagram. Club and unit
meeting will be held at Fairfield Iowa, 13th of February 2016, more details to follow.
I would like to thank all the Nobles and ladies who have sent cards, flowers of just visited Linda
during the past months as she is recovering after an unexpected hospitalization. Linda appearance is that,
she is getting stronger but still has some memorization difficulties to overcome.

WINTER 2015
Message from Assistant Rabban
Nobles and Ladies,
As my year as your Assistant Rabban is coming to a close, I want to thank everyone for your support! The
past 3 years have gone by quickly and if elected as your Kaaba Chief Rabban, I plan to continue to serve
you and the Shrine to the best of my ability. My Lady, Mary, and I enjoy meeting and making new friends
along the way as we attend events!
Parade season is coming to an end with only the Oskaloosa Christmas parade left on December 4. The
Davenport Halloween parade was able to be held even though the weather was questionable in the morning. Parades are so much fun and lets the public see us and remind them of what our fraternity is all
about.. . . having fun and helping kids!!
The Sportsman's raffle at the Rodeo Grounds was a success with a great crowd. Thank you to all that attended, donated prizes/money for prizes, helped set up and prepared and served the food. This is always
a fun event and good fundraiser. It takes everybody's help to make it a success!
The Fall Ceremonial was held October 10 at Columbus Junction bringing in 9 new Nobles. Then, lunch was
served and the Columbus Day Parade followed. This was another great day with the new Nobles participating in the parade. Nobles, again, we need to be attending our Blue Lodges and inviting those members
to join us in the Shrine. Let's increase our membership. The Black Camel continues to lessen our numbers. Mary and I want to extend our sincere sympathies to the families of those Shriners recently taken
from us. All will be greatly missed.
Please remember that the next Stated Meeting, December 2, is our election night. Please try to attend and
exercise that right to vote for the Kaaba Divan. I would appreciate your vote to be the 2016 Kaaba Chief
Rabban. Thank you.
Mary and I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy,
Healthy and Prosperous New year!!
Proudly wear your fez, have fun. . . it's for the kids!
Yours in the faith,
Walt Hill

WINTER 2015
Message from The High Priest & Prophet
Hi Nobles and Ladies
Fall has come upon us and my Lady Kathleen and I have seen all four seasons throughout this year
while traveling to the Clubs, Units, Imperial Session, CSSA and other Temples by observing the
planting, growing and harvest seasons. The best time is during the fall season when the trees
change to amber color and the hilly fields turn to golden color after harvest. It is beautiful scenery.
Winter time is also beautiful but I do not do very well in very cold, icy, windy and heavy snow conditions especially driving on a two way curvy highway when you cannot see the divided center line.
On those conditions I will stay home this year after I flew into a snowy ditch while driving on black
ice this past January and fortunately my Lady Kathleen and I did not get hurt.
By going to the Clubs and Units I have learned our weakness and strong points. I found that we need
better communications and keep encouraging our new nobles to excel, be involved and step up the
plate and to lead and become good leaders.
We also need our new and younger nobles to present their ideas. If there is an generation gap issue,
we need to meet in the middle and to compromise. Time and ideas have changed and I have notice
that several clubs have turned their clubs over to the younger generation. By doing so, those
younger nobles will be bringing in their friends to make the clubs and units grow. I believe that it is
time for us older nobles to turn over our clubs and units to the younger nobles and be there to help
and guide them when needed; otherwise, at some point, the club or unit will not exist.
By going to other temples I found that the Tangier Divan has a six hour (one way) drive to go to one
of their clubs for a meeting. Tehama Divan has a eight hour drive and same goes with Isis Divan. For
Kaaba Temple it is somewhat central located. It is not more than three hours (one way) trip. Leave
by three pm. and get home before midnight and I have done that for about a week at a time. By doing so, I could understand the working nobles not able to come to our Kaaba Temple Stated meetings but hopefully those nobles are able to participate and come to our Shrine Ceremonials, events
and be involved in their units and parades on the weekends.
I am aware that the times will be very difficult for many of our nobles this coming year, when I hear
of many thousands of people being laid off or hours have been cut or businesses closing. Our membership at present time is around one thousand and ten and I do expect that it will go down to less
of a thousand members in 2016. My concern is when an active noble got dropped because he was
not up to date with his Blue Lodge dues.
I remember those times during my younger years while raising a family and had to make choices of
what groups I had to drop out. I have dropped out of two organizations and never came back to
them but I kept up with my Blue Lodge dues. It was very hard and difficult for us but my Lady
Kathleen made sure that she paid my dues.

WINTER 2015
Greeting Nobles!
And may GOD’S BLESSINGS BE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES NOW AND FOREVER. In as much as WE ALL
PUT OUR TRUST IN GOD we can ask of HIM to guide us in every thought, plan, idea or concept we may consider,
or have. We all know that we have a HOLY BIBLE on OUR ALTAR that sits in the middle of the lodges in every related Masonic group in our organization, and we all know that the BIBLE contains THE WORD OF OUR GOD. In
ALL of our plans, so any and all of our undertakings it would be well to FIRST CONSULT AND REFER TO OUR BIBLES prior to our making any of our determinations. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, ALL the BOOKS OF THE BIBLE
spell out answers to our problems and desires we experience in all our various responsibilities, especially with some
meditation. Always take time to consider and reconsider our thoughts, words, deeds and actions, (that could be a
prayer (please do not take offence).
Now let us take a look at some of the BEATITUDES;
Matthew, Chapter 5 V3-12 as follows:
“For thou, Lord, wilt bless
the righteous: with favor
wilt thou compass him as
with a shield”
3
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Psalm 5:12
10
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely,
for my sake.
12
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were
before you.
MAY OUR LORD GOD, THE GOD IN WHOME WE TRUST
GRANT TO YOU A
BLESSED AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING

WINTER 2015
A WORD FROM THE TREASURE
Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
I hope this letter finds everyone in good health and doing well. As you all know at the October
stated meeting the Nobility voted to raise the dues for 2016. This was brought about because at the
2015 Imperial Session in Houston the Nobility voted to raise the Imperial portion of the dues by $15
dollars. This would have brought your annual dues to Kaaba and Shriners International to a total of
$90. With the annual cost of operating the Temple increasing it was decided to also raise Kaaba's portion an additional $10 which will now bring your dues in 2016 and the future to $100. "Nobody", especially your Divan, Recorder, and Treasurer want to raise dues. As the cost of expenses for running
the Temple increase and the income declines we are forced to reluctantly raise the dues. I know that
in my home Lodge we were force to raise our dues because the Grand Lodge of Iowa raised their portion of the annual dues $15.
I've heard from several Nobles that this is a terrible idea and that this will create a hardship for the
younger Nobles who have young families and are already living on lower incomes and may not be
able to pay the increase. Likewise we have older Nobles who are living on fixed incomes. We all have
our priorities when it comes to paying expenses and more than likely Lodge and Shrine dues are at
the bottom of that list. Some people are better at budgeting than others and find ways to pay, others
can't. If any Noble is in Financial Distress and cannot afford to pay his dues but still wants to be a
member contact the Temple office or a member of the Divan we will work with you. You are all a
member of the Masonic Family, when you have a problem we want to be there to help you. Below is a
breakdown of the dues since 2000.

2005

One way we can keep the dues lower is by having fund raisers We did not have any profits from the
onions sales, our Circus helped and the Sportsmen's Raffle did well. If anyone can think of a fund
raiser to help raise money let me or anyone in the Divan know. Right now we still have the lowest
Temple dues around the area. Hope this helps, if anyone has any questions or wants to discuss this
give me a call or look me up. Until then.

WINTER 2015
Recorder’s Corner
At the Imperial Session in Houston this past July, a $15.00 increase in Per-Capita tax
was voted on and approved: this will be reflected on the 2016 dues notices which will be
mailed the first part of November.
However, if our members wish to seize the opportunity to invest in a Per-Capita Life
Membership, They may do so at a total $450.00 (thirty times the current tax amount) until the end of the calendar year. Waiting until 1/1/2016 or after will double the amount required for a Per Capita Life Membership (the new total will be $900.00).
As the end of the year approaches and the holiday gift exchanges are planned, I am
encouraging nobles and their families to invest in life membership options—especially
the Per- Capita Life Membership, as you will never again be offered for low price of
$450.00.
Securing a Per Capita Life Membership, Permanent Contributing Membership (for
the Hospital Assessment) and /or a Temple Life Membership will help ensure the continued membership of our Nobles, and preserve the future of our fraternity and its philanthropy.

WINTER 2015
11th Annual Women’s Fast Pitch Tournament Wraps It Up, with Thanks Announcing that the 2015 Annual Shriner’s Woman’s Fast Pitch tournament will be his last,
Kaaba Noble Frank Hocker stunned participating coaches, who called the announcement a “stab in the heart.” An Illinois coach sat down and wrote a check for
$500 as his thanks. The impact of the tournament’s11 years lies in the “attitude
and sportsman-like conduct of the hundreds of players over the years,” Noble
Frank recalls. “The players performed with quality and integrity—we never once
had an incident of misconduct.” “We had an idea in 2004,” he said, “which we expanded and ultimately molded into the successful enterprise that players and
coaches appreciated and supported year after year.” Frank touches on the foundational success of this program, which raised more than $100,000 for our hospital in
the last decade: That is his and Lady Betty’s sterling leadership arising from
Frank’s 65 years as a professional umpire, his associations in sports, and their total commitment to the Shrine and our hospitals. He has been one of the most active and successful recruiters of patients for Shriners hospitals over the years. We
shall miss Betty, Frank, and this event greatly. The 2015 tournament featured 40
teams from IA, IL, MN, WI, and MI. “This year,” Frank is proud to report, “we had
our first team from KS—Manhattan, KS. The women heard about the great
cause—Shriners Hospital Chicago—and they voted to attend.” Approximately 500
players and coaches participated in this year’s event, held at Jacobs Park, East
Moline, IL. Thirty umpires kept things running smoothly, and more than 6,500
spectators attended nearly 300 games. They raised $12,500 in 2015, bringing the
decade total to $135.757— a remarkable record. Joel Lowrie and his lady Rayo
Corona served as medical consultants from our hospital. Thanks, Joel and Rayo!
We send our special thanks for this year’s great effort and for a decade of remarkable achievement and very hard work for all. Thank you, Noble Frank, Lady Betty,
Nobles Fred Gibson and Frank Olson, and their colleagues from Kaaba, Mohammed, and El Kahir Temples. This has been a signal success in our Third Party
fundraising program!
