125 THINGS TO DO AT FAIRMOUNT FAMOUS FACES OF FAIRMOUNT: WOLFE LONDONER Parking N 24 Wolfe Londoner Born: 1842 Died: 1912 (70 Years) Wolfe Londoner was one of Denver’s most colorful figures, known far and wide for his humor, wit, and practical jokes. Arriving in Colorado in 1860, Londoner travelled to Canon City, where he built the first stone building and opened a general store. From Canon City, he went to California Gulch (near present Leadville) where he established a second another store. He was the son of a wealthy merchant and would create his own business empire with interests all along the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains from Wyoming to New Mexico. In 1889, Londoner was elected mayor of Denver, the first and only person of Jewish decent to occupy that office. However, his term in office was marred by his close relationship with the local saloon and gambling bosses, who held immense political power in Denver at the time and backed Londoner wholeheartedly. In fact, during his reelection, it was discovered that Londoner’s unseeingly acquaintances were encouraging the practice of ballot box stuffing through intimidation and bribery. After a scathing article on the front page of the The Rocky Mountain News and subsequent investigations detailing his misconduct and corruption, Londoner became the first and only Denver mayor to be removed from office.
