BIRD ART FOR PLAIN TALK A TRIBUTE TO JEAN MOORE O ne of Gwen and my favorite sections of the Plain Talk newsletter has always been the “snow chart” where we tabulate snowfall dating back to 1969. This was made possible through the excellent work of long time Plain resident Jean Moore. Every day, for over 43 years, Jean tirelessly kept track of the local weather and recorded it for NOAA. Temperature minimums, maximums, snowfall, accumulated depth, and inches of rain! And when she left town, she always had to find someone to cover for her while she was away. Sadly, Jean passed away this past February. But Jean had business to take care of, and until that was done, she wasn’t going anywhere. As her health declined, she knew she needed to find someone to take over the weather station observations. She called me to see if Plain Hardware would be willing Continued on page 5 Jean Moore with her husband Troy near the precipitation gauge she checked for over 43 years. Thank you, Jean. We will miss you! KIDS Saturday, May 21, 11:30 – 1:30pm Come join the Grunewald Guild artists in creating beautiful bird artwork to celebrate the Leavenworth Bird Fest. Held on the Plain Hardware Patio. PCT TALK & SLIDE SHOW with Adrienne Schaefer, local author of Day & Section Hikes—Pacific Crest Trail/ Washington Saturday, June 25, 7:00pm No host wine and beer and complimentary hors d’oeurves will be served. From tubes and rafts, to air mattresses and squirt guns, we’ve got everything you need to beat the summertime sizzle! Left to right: Sadler, the store dog, Katie Whitten, Jake Whitten, Gwen Whitten, Bobbie Faulconer, Sarah Butler, Jody Allen, Caren Karnofski, Amy Russell, Dave Saugen and Rob Whitten. Not pictured: Kim Wiley, Briee Roby, Geno Alejo and Zelda Scott. STORE UPDATE E ven as I write this update, the last remnants of winter still covers my lawn in patches, some of it 8—10 inches deep, with fresh snow falling this morning. In April! But the warmth of the spring sun is quickly melting the late La Nina snowpack, and the first wildflowers are starting to bloom. Springtime in Plain is always fun—a time when you can cross country ski in the morning, and then ride your bike in the warmth of the afternoon sunshine. As we start our 15th year here in Plain, I want to express how lucky and thankful we are to be here in this supportive community and in this beautiful valley. We have been busy at the store working hard to improve the selection and display of products. Jody has completely re-organized the “nuts and bolts” section of the store, and it is really looking good! We have moved the Simpson brand construction hardware to the nail room where it is now grouped with our construction fasteners. Briee, Geno, Dave and Bobbie made that happen and it looks sharp! The moves have opened up more space for our lawn and garden department so we have added to the product selection there. We have our usual selection of bulk lawn and garden products for sale out front, as well as a great selection of fertilizers. In the front of the store, Gwen, Caren, Sarah, Amy and Zelda have the store stuffed full of fun clothes and unique gifts! Gwen will be highlighting some of them on our Plain Hardware Facebook page (search Plain Hardware), so watch for that. Our new cinnamon rolls that we are serving on the weekends have become the talk of the town and my downfall! They are hard to resist! You have to try one. We hope to see you soon in Plain or bump into you out on the trails! Here’s to a great Spring and Summer. Enjoy! You may have heard about ethanol solvency eating away and damaging essential rubber and plastic parts in vehicles and boats. That problem doesn’t just go away if you put ethanol fuel in lawn equipment or an ATV. 2-cycle engines face profound problems over time when ethanol fuels are run through them. 2-cycle engines rely on a fuel-oil mixture to bring lubrication to critical engine parts. Unfortunately, ethanol blends destroy 2-cycle engines by pulling water into the fuel and preventing the oil in the fuel from bonding with metal surfaces as it is supposed to. Combine this with fuel lines and rubber parts eaten away by ethanol solvency and it spells bad news for small equipment running on the ethanol blended fuels of today. E10 and now E15 are federally allowed fuel blends. Ethanol is a form of alcohol (think whiskey) that is combustible and can power engines easily. In the United States, it is made primarily from corn. The negative affects of ethanol fuel can be offset with newly developed additives. Plain Hardware is currently selling Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment for this purpose. Look for it in the “automotive” section of Plain Hardware. Lawn and Garden Tractor Batteries—available at Plain Hardware Winter is hard on batteries around here. Cold temperatures and long stretches of time between winter and summer use seem to get the best of my lawn tractor battery! Trickle charging can help extend the life of your battery, as well as disconnecting it and keeping it in a warm location. But if that fails, don’t forget that Plain Hardware carries the right battery for your garden tractor and even your car or truck. They are fully charged and ready to go! New Business Profile Plain Creations/Hair by Jodi D o you feel like a Plain Jane? Are you in desperate need of a new look? If so, you are in luck! Local hairstylist Jodi Gage has decided to open a hair salon in Plain. “I love to keep up with the latest hair styles and trends. Plus, I am a really good listener. If you have something new in mind, you can count on me”, says Jodi. Jodi was born in Wenatchee and raised in Plain and has always been interested in being a hair stylist. She graduated from the Academy of Hair Design in Wenatchee in 2005 and has been dreaming about opening her own shop ever since. “I am so happy that this opportunity opened itself up to me. I immediately jumped on it. I am so excited to have a shop that will be all mine! Plus I am looking forward to meeting new people. This new venture is going to be a lot of fun for me!” she said Jodi’s salon, named Plain Creations will be opening in May. It will be located in the Just Plain Laundry building, which is on Beaver Valley Road just behind Just Plain Grocery and next to Plain Hardware. Jodi will be open Wednesday through Saturday, by appointment only. You can reach her at 548-7532. The News Beat Community, call the Ponderosa Fire Department at 509-763-2270. Please note that all burning is prohibited after the 4th of July in the Ponderosa Community unless a Chelan County Burn Ban forces us to shut down earlier. It would reopen when the fall season provides enough rain to make outdoor burning safe again. Areas outside the Ponderosa may have different rules and regulations. So please don’t assume that if the folks in Plain are burning that it is OK to do so in the Ponderosa. Our fuel loading, canopy density and close proximity to each other make our fire permitting necessary. We appreciate your vigilance and compliance with these regulations. Your safety is our biggest concern! Here’s to a safe and forest fire free summer! Plain Hardware T-shirt “Stars” in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse—6 Part Documentary” Okay, maybe “stars” is a bit of an exaggeration. No our ever popular hammer & wrench t-shirt isn’t worn by Edward or Jacob in the blockbuster Twilight movie Eclipse. However, it is worn by Nevin Swain, the Prop Master in Part 2 of the Documentary while he discusses how Bella’s ring and quilt were made for the Eclipse movie. If you are a Twilight fan, check it out…our shirt is famous!? Now, if only we could get a photo of Jacob with one on … Where There’s Smoke... Here’s hoping to clear the air, so to speak on outdoor burning in the Plain, Lake Wenatchee, and Ponderosa Communities. Outdoor burning of yard waste is banned between June 1st and September 31st in Chelan County due to forest fire danger. If you would like to burn yard debris October 1 thru May 31, a permit is required in all areas of Chelan County, which can be obtained thru the Washington State Department of Ecology, with permission from your local fire district. If you live in the Ponderosa Community, you need permission from Fire District #4 - 509-763-2270. If you live in the Plain/Lake Wenatchee area, you need permission from Fire District #9 - 509-763-3034. It is legal to have a recreational/cooking fire any time of the year (unless there is a Chelan County Burn Ban in effect) as long as it is in an approved campfire ring—stop by Plain Hardware for a guidelines sheet. You do not need to have a permit, unless you live in the Ponderosa Community—see note below from the Ponderosa Fire Chief. You must have a shovel and hose line available by the fire and someone must be attending the fire at all times. It is always illegal to burn garbage, paper, cardboard, treated wood, plastic, metals, paint, tires, pesticide containers, dead animals, demolition debris, petroleum products and asphalt. Besides being illegal, the foul smelling smoke can be very annoying to your neighbors, if not to the entire community. Beaver Valley School Celebrates 10 years! The Beaver Valley School was built in 2001 when the State of Washington decided that all schools needed to include Kindergarten classes. The one-room schoolhouse at Winton was not able to be enlarged to provide an extra grade, so the Cascade School District decided to build a new school. After much deliberation, a site was bought in Plain and the Beaver Valley School was erected. To keep the historical legacy in the district, the old Winton Schoolhouse was moved to Beaver Valley and situated next to the new school. Beaver Valley School will be celebrating 10 years of creative, community-based learning at their end of the year barbecue and junior choir concert which will happen the last week of school. Call 509-763-3309 midMay for barbecue/concert date and time. For those interested in finding out more information about Beaver Valley School and its Kindergarten and Primary school programs, the school will be hosting an Open House on Thursday, May 5 beginning at 3:00 p.m. Please feel free to come by and discover the excellent educational opportunity for your children located right here in Plain. 59er Diner Now Serving the Freshest Egg Breakfast in the Valley! The big news at the 59er Diner this spring is that their chicken coop is finally finished and now according to owner Joe Cannata, “The coop is full of chickens (80 of um’) and they are a layin’! Every morning for breakfast Flo now serves the freshest eggs in the Valley.” Stop by for one of their famous 3 egg scrambles! Breakfast is served daily until 11am. A special note from Mick Lamar, Fire Chief/Ponderosa Fire Department: Burning Permits are required for recreational/ cooking fires in the Ponderosa Community. To obtain a permit to burn within the Ponderosa 3 LOGO CHALLENGE 2011 PLAIN HARDWARE LOGO WEAR CHALLENGE Wear It With The Most People In The Photo and Win a $100 Plain Hardware Gift Certificate! Happy Planting! A TRIBUTE TO JEAN MOORE Continued from page 1 to take over, and after discussing it with our employees, Gwen and I decided we wanted to do it. It took the NOAA people a few days to get us set up and trained. Once we were ready to start, Jean recorded her last weather observations, and on the morning that we took over for her, Jean passed away. Jean’s contributions to our community were much more than just the weather station. It was her love and care of Plain and its people that touched us the most. She dispensed this love in many ways, but mostly we remember her incredible gardening advice, and the beautiful flowers that she frequently gave us to brighten our store. We will miss her— she was one of a kind. 5 Lori Sledge and Jessee Perrault hit Plain Hardware for a much earned espressoo drink after finishing a bike ride around the Chiwawa Loop Road. HIKE? BIKE? Sundays 9am to 3pm Product Profile A TALE OF TWO BEANS W hen Gwen called me about a month ago and told me that she had mailed a shipment of caffeine free coffee and a sampler kit of cocktails without alcohol to test for the next Plain Talk, I didn’t really know what to say. Will the next issue feature meat without protein or vegetables without vitamins? Don’t get me wrong, I understand a person making the decision to not drink coffee or not drink cocktails. But taking the essence away from a product BY just somehow seems JOE BOYD morally reprehensible!! When the packOFFICIAL PLAIN HARDWARE age arrived, I was PRODUCT relieved to discover TESTER that the cocktails in question were actually Jelly Belly Cocktail Classic jelly beans! I thought to myself “well, at least there is going to be some refined sugar to work with!” But I was still deeply suspicious of the D&M Coffee Columbian Supremo Decaf. I reluctantly opened the package and smelled the beans……….. Hummmm, not bad!? I decided to brew a pot of the pseudo coffee to use as a palate cleanser while I sat down with the alcohol-free cocktail jelly beans. There are five different mocktails in the Cocktail Classics box. Here they are in my rank order: (1) Piña Colada, (2) Peach Bellini, (3) Pomegranate Cosmo, (4) Strawberry Daiquiri and (5) Mojito. They are all delicious and each really does come close to representing the actual cocktail. As I worked with these a bit, I discovered something amazing! Use the ranking numbers above as your guide and follow along: 5 + 3 = Lemon Drop 5 + 4 + 4 = Strawberry Margarita 1 + 2 + 3 = Hurricane 4 + Decaf = Chocolate Martini 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = Long Island Iced Tea 5 + 5 + 2 = Margarita (No Salt) 5 + 5 + 2 + a pinch of salt = Margarita (With Salt) I think these combinations might very well be limitless!! This little package is not just a cute little candy container, it is a non-alcoholic bartender’s training school in a box! Listen carefully—you should rush in to Plain Hardware and grab a few of these before The Premium Institute of Bartending discovers these things. When they do, you can bet they will no longer be available to the general public! “Plain Hardware’s new decaf coffee is really good. There is no comparison to what they were serving before. That’s for sure! I am so glad they switched.” – Lynette Strong, loyal coffee customer. As for the decaf (and you didn’t hear it from me) it is truly delicious. It is rich and has none of the nasty bitterness that comes with most fake coffee. If someone served it to me, without telling me that it is decaffeinated, I would actually like it! But I am sorry; I just refuse to admit that I like decaffeinated coffee! THE SNOWFALL CONTEST WINNER IS... Plain Hardware is now a Stacie Gubrud! I n the Fall/Winter 2010 issue of the Plain Talk Newsletter we challenged everyone to enter our “Guess the Total Amount of Snow Contest.” Well, I just received the snowfall report from Rob, and the total amount of snowfall during this past winter was…122.2 inches! Stacie, with a whopping good guess of 122 inches wins the $25 Plain Hardware gift certificate. Way to go, Stacie!
