STREET TALK February 29, 2016 From the desk of Nazario Sauceda, Director Eric Garcetti Mayor Bureau of Street Services BSS Completes Sunset Beautification Project BSS recently completed the Sunset Junction Beautification project that stretches between Santa Monica Blvd. and Edgecliff Dr. Construction included five bump-outs, a new landscaped plaza, 8 access ramps, 12 street trees, 20 bike racks, the replacement of 7,600 sq. ft. of damaged sidewalk, and the replacement of 450 linear ft. of curbs and gutters. Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell thanked the Bureau for the success of the project and BSS director Nazario Sauceda stated, "This streetscape project has beautified and enhanced this segment of Sunset Boulevard, while providing a safer environment for the people who live and work in this area." Improving Bus Stops The Solano Canyon - North Broadway Bus Stop Improvements Project had the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on February 22nd with Councilman Gilbert Cedillo of Council District 1. The two bumpouts provide room and shade for transit users waiting for buses. Newly installed safety lights will illuminate the area around transit stops for safety at night. BSS also installed a beautiful community steel art pannel along with two community bronze plauques. Chinatown Firecracker Run On Sunday, February 21st, Street Services Investigators participated in the 36th Annual L.A. Chinatown Firecracker Run (LACFR). LACFR has contributed over $500,000 to local elementary schools and nonprofit community organizations providing service and programs to benefit the community. Event proceeds and donations benefited numerous non-profit community organizations including Central City Action Committee and Chinatown Service Center. The event was a resounding success and Street Services Investigators on bike patrol ensured the safety of all participants. In addition, the BSS provided motor sweeping of the streets before and after the event. Mulholland Drive Receives BSS Makeover During the second week of February, grading work was performed on Mulholland Drive to improve its rideability. This stretch of Mulholland Drive extends from Trinidad Road to Saltillo Street in Woodland Hills and is used by many local residents who enjoy walking in natural surroundings in the middle of our urban environment. Assigned staff exercised great skill in grading the rutted road irregularities into a smooth path over the course of two days, making Mulholland Drive easier for motor vehicles to access. Before After BSS Employee Receives Prestigious Award Meridian of Cheviot Hills (a senior living facility in Los Angeles) presented awards of recognition to public servants on February 5th, 2016. The recipients of the awards were Senator Holly Mitchell of California 30th Senatorial District, Luis Rivera of the Mayor's Office and Joy Bryant, Street Services Investigator.
