2D Compact Fluorescent Lamps
2D Compact Fluorescent Lamps Biax™ 2D, a great GE product, was first introduced in 1981 to satisfy the technical needs of architects, interior designers and other style-conscious specifiers. Electrical diagram for 2D 16W, 28W (2-pin, with built-in starter). Advanced amalgam technology: The higher wattage versions of Biax™ 2D incorporate the latest amalgam technology. Introducing a tiny amalgam pellet into the lamp rather than liquid mercury means that lamp output is more consistent in any burning position, at either high or low ambient temperatures. Energy Saving: Biax™ 2D brings all the energy-efficiency and long life benefits of compact fluorescent in a design conscious and highly versatile format. With 10,000 hours average life and up to 80% energy saving over incandescent lamps, 2D really is the ideal lamp. N Widest choice of wattages: The Biax™ 2D also offers a wide range of wattages, from 10 to 55W, for most applications. Both 2 and 4 pin versions can be used with standard or electronic ballasts. F 230V~ 50Hz capacitor ballast Strong optical performance: Whether installed in circular or square format fittings, Biax™ 2D’s continuous light form gives unequalled optical performance, with all round illuminance. Electrical diagram for 2D 10W, 16W, 21W, 28W, 38W & 55W (4-pin, without strater). Outstanding versatility and flattest format: The superbly engineered shape of Biax™ 2D is unique amongst compact fluorescent sources, enabling the design and production of fittings with much flatter, less intrusive profiles. Biax™ 2D is suitable for a wide range of fittings, including uplighters and wall or ceiling-mounted fittings, whether used in exterior or interior applications and the same lamps can be adapted for functional emergency lighting or more decorative installations. N 230V~ 50Hz capacitor starter ballast F Wide range of luminaires: Luminaires with 2D lamps are normally supplied with starter circuits (lamps with built-in starter has 2-pin caps, without starter 4-pin caps), which ensure correct operation at temperatures of down to -10°C. If quick starting is desired, replace the FSU starter in luminaires using 4 pin lamps with an electronic starter, thereby permitting starting at temperatures of down to -15°C. Light is considered to have electromagnetic wave phenomenon, its amplitude expresses the intensity of visual sensation and λ WAVELENGTH and ƒ FREQUENCY of the oscillation determine the colour. These values can be calculated as a function of SPEED OF LIGHT IN VACUUM (300,000 km/s): v = λ ƒ. The quantity of light, that is the light energy emitted by a light source in one second in the visible interval of spectrum. Unit of measure: lumen (lm); the lumen is the luminous flux emitted in unit solid angle by a uniform point source situated in the centre of a unit radius sphere having a luminous intensity of 1 cd. Luminous efficacy (e) The ratio between the luminous flux emitted by a light source (F) and the consumed power used to generate it (e = F/P). Unit of measure: lm/W. The luminance is the ratio between the luminous intensity emitted by an object in a given direction and the projection of the area of this object on a plane perpendicular to this direction itself. Unit of measure: cd/m2 Examples for luminances: • candlelight: 5.000 cd/m2 • fluorescent lamp: 8.000 cd/m2 • low-pressure sodium lamp: 100.000 cd/m2 • high-pressure mercury vapour lamp: 150.000 cd/m2 • incandescent lamp: 6.000.000 cd/m2 • sun: 1.550.000.000 cd/m2 Relative sensibility 1.0 0.5 400 500 Sensitivity of human eye Photopic vision (in day-time) Scotopic vision (with eye adapted to twilight) g GE Lighting 110 600 700 λ (nm) Lighting terminology - Lighting of indoor areas Utilisation factor method It can be used to calculate the “average” illuminance on the work place: E = Fu S where: E = average illuminance (lux) Fu = luminous flux on S (lumen) S = area of surface to be illuminated (m2) Because S is known and E can be determined from the desired illuminance, only the Fu “USEFUL LUMINOUS FLUX” should be calculated, this is the light quantity, which will be applied on the S surface Fu = U x F The value of parameter U is called “UTILIZATION FACTOR” (less than 1). From this: E=UxF/S F=ExS/U Utilisation factor U can experimentally be determined from • the photometrical and physical characteristics of the luminaire • reflectance factors of the surrounding surfaces • K “ROOM INDEX”; this dimensional parameter defines how the value U does depend on the geometrical characteristics of the room and the light centre height and can be calculated with the formula: K= AxB Hu (A + B) where: • A and B the length and width of the room, respectively • Hu = the distance between the light centre and the work plane From the experimental values collected in tables, the U values can be looked up on the bases of the reflectance factor of work plane (ceiling or wall). After calculating the total luminous flux F, the number of luminaires to be installed can be obtained: N = F / FI where FI means the nominal luminous flux of the pre-selected lamp. However, the illuminance values determined by using the above formula relate to the “normal” plane passing through the point P and directing the luminous intensity I. In practice, the “HORIZONTAL ILLUMINANCE” (Eh) and the “VERTICAL ILLUMINANCE” (Ev) values are used and expressed in the formula: 2 2 3 Eh = (I / d ) cos α or Eh = (I / h ) cos α 2 2 2 Ev = (I / d ) sen α or Ev = (I / h ) cos α sen α g GE Lighting 111 Lighting terminology Photometric object and diagram Rotation angle of planes C The light distribution of a light source can be displayed by using of a photometric object and photometric diagrams. The photometric object is considered to be the geometric locus determined by the values of vectors representing the illuminaces in different directions, starting from the origin in the centre of light source. The photometric diagram can be produced by cutting off the photometric object by two vertical planes perpendicular each other and passing through the normal axis of the luminaire. In case of indoor and street lighting fixture, the C - γ co-ordinate system and polar photometric diagrams are used, which gives on the two planes the intensity of the lighting: C = 0° - 180° (transverse) and C = 90° - 270° (axial). In practice, the illuminance is used to compare to the luminous intensity of a 1000W lamp. However, for floodlights B - β (or V-H) co-ordinate system and Descartes diagrams are used, because these are more suitable for showing the light distribution of such kinds of luminaires. The measuring takes place by using two perpendicular planes ñ one is in transversal, the other in axial direction relation to the lamp. Then, we should make sure that the illuminance values of the luminaire not to exceed the “A” or “B” reference limiting curves in any points, determined by the interval of vertical angle γ (between 45° and 85°) and the a/hs ratio. The level of limiting of the luminance is depend on the type, placement, radiant zone of the luminaire as well as on the quality class and luminous intensity of the lighting requested. It has two components: one of them is the light output ratio directed to upward (ULOR), the other to downward (DLOR). This has practical importance only when the luminous intensity of lamps is independent from temperatures. In this case the normal efficiency is the same as the operating efficiency. UPLOR Colour rendering index “Ra” It expresses how accurately a light source can render the colours. This ability depends on the spectral energy distribution of the light source. There is no close correlation between colour rendering index and colour temperature: quite different spectral energy distribution curves can produce similar colour temperatures with quite different colour rendering indexes. “Ra” can be defined by IEC colour test method based upon the following 8 colour templates: a) for all colour templates, the percentage value of the colour appeared relating to the colour temperature of blackbody similar to that of the given light source will be calculated b) the arithmetic average of these 8 values gives the value of colour rendering index “Ra” E.g.: Ra = 100 for GLS and halogen lamps Ra = 0 for SOX (low pressure sodium lamps) Ra values of the 5 groups (extract from Standard UNI 10380) 1) Group 1A: Ra > 90 2) Group 1B: 80 < Ra < 90 3) Group 2 : 60 < Ra < 80 4) Group 3: 40 < Ra < 60 5) Group 4: 20 < Ra < 40 DOWNLOR SHR MAX: Max. ratio of distance of axis to installation height In case of quadratic arrangement of luminaires (see Figure), the maximum ratio of the distance of axis to the installation height, which gives for the four central luminaires a ratio of Emin / Emax > 0,7. SHR NOM: Nominal ratio of distance of axis to installation height The highest value series (0,5 - 0,75 - 1,0 - 1,25) which doesn’t exceed SHR MAX. IEC EN Luminaires are classified according to the type of protection against electric 60598-1 relating to the luminaires settles the measuring method and limits of shock. the maximum permissible temperatures. In addition, the Standard contains prescriptions preventing the fire break out. CLASS 0 luminaires A luminaire in which protection against electric shock relies upon basic insulation. Resistance to flame Parts made of insulation materials intended for retaining the current-carrying parts in place must comply with pinpoint flame test. This test simulates the effects of small flames, which can occur in case of failure inside of a luminaire and its goal is to avoid the risk of fire. The sample must be tested with the pinpoint flame test according to IEC 695-2-2. Test flame must be applied for 10 seconds on the place of sample where the highest temperature can be expected. Burning must be ceased within 30 seconds after removing the flame (class V2 according to UL94), and any burning drops falling from the sample must not light up a standard silk-paper stretched horizontally or parts put under the sample in a distance of 200 mm ± 5 mm. CLASS I luminaires Protection class I Test with incandescent wire Parts made of insulation materials not intended for retaining the active parts in place but which protect against electric shocks and parts made of insulation materials not intended for retaining SELV parts in place must comply with the incandescent wire test of 650 °C (according to IEC 695-2-1) unless the local standards order otherwise. Any burning or incandescence of the sample must stop within 30 seconds after removing the incandescent wire and any burning or melted drops falling from the sample must not light up a standard (ISO 4046 6.86) single-layer silk-paper stretched horizontally under the sample in a distance of 200 mm ± 5 mm. Based on the risk characteristics, the equipment can be classified as follows: 1. Explosion-proof functionally protected equipment (AD-FE), are electric equipment where: • In case of parts which can generate arcs or sparks during normal operation or exceed the highest temperature permissible by risk materials considered, precautions are taken preventing to set fire out of safety cover during the above operation. In addition, the safety cover resists energy effects, which may occur inside the safety cover within the intervention limits of electric protection in case of failures originated or started from the electric circuit. • For parts precautions are taken to prevent failures or circumstances occur which can fire dangerous materials. Parts in AD-FT equipment which can generate arcs or sparks during normal operation or exceed the highest temperature permissible by dangerous materials considered, protection cover must be used the level of protection of which complies with the marked values given in the table excepting the case of equipment installed in air-conditioned environments where other standards must be considered. The lamp will be ignited by a starting voltage generated inside the lamp. As opposed to the traditional power supply unit, no correction is needed, because the power factor is > 0.95. Electronic gears have several advantages compared to the traditional ones: Fluorescent lamps operate on high frequency, which has a positive effect on the luminous efficacy (it is more than 10% higher than that of traditional ballast) and decreases the consumed power compared to the 50 Hz mains power consumed in case of same luminous flux. Cost savings of re-lamping; considerably longer life owing to the highfrequency operation (average rated life can increase even by up to 50% depending on the type of luminaires and the rhythm of swithing-on), therefore the mortality will be significantly lower. Limited decrease of luminous flux, because the fluorescent lamp is loaded less, therefore the blackening of the lamp cathodes will be diminished. Silent operation due to the using of electronics; the disturbing noises will decrease, owing to the high frequency and the magnetisation of the outer housing of the equipment. g GE Lighting 117 Technical information Luminaires with emergency unit 1. Permanent operation (non-permanent operation is denoted). 2. Emergency unit containing electric circuit and Ni-Cd battery. 3. Existing of mains power indicated by LED. 4. With possibility of inhibiting the emergency operation through switch (out of operation). 5. 60-minute life. 6. 18% of luminous flux in case of 18W type, 20% for 36/58W types. Emergency lighting comes into action when normal lighting fails. Reserve and safety lighting can be differentiated. In the first case, lighting must allow people to continue their activities when normal lighting is disconnected and does not relate to the safety of them. In the second case, lighting must insure the safety of people (indication of exits, illumination of obstacles, illumination of areas where hazardous activities are going on, unambiguous indication of emergency exits, etc.) D.LG.S. 626/94 prescribes several directives for safety and health of people in working place, which must obligatory be used. In case of planning, installation and modification of lighting equipment, the following regulations must be kept: • “Escape routs and emergency exits must be provided with signs placed on durable and appropriate places according to the valid regulations” (Article 33 1.10). • “Escape routs and emergency exits where illumination is needed, must be provided with lighting of sufficient light intensity, which comes into operation when the electric mains fails” (Article 33 1.11). ALGLAS: high purity glass coating on metal reflectors • Chemical composition ALGLAS is a 95% pure silicon glass coating for reflectors (this rate is only 60-80% in case of standard sodium or borosilicate glass); the higher purity means higher light reflection. • Surface smoothness Light scattering, rippling and roughness of prismatic glass is significantly more than those of ALGLAS coated glass. • Coating continuity ALGLAS coating is continuous and pinhole free. Complete immersion of the reflector in the silicate insures uniform coating of all surfaces. • Cleanability ALGLAS finish is smoother than pressed glass and readily lends itself to thorough cleaning with a standard detergent and water. • Durability and safety ALGLAS is a high quality glass coating that is chemically inert, giving the chemical durability of plate glass. • Optical performance Higher than that of anodised aluminium, owing the smooth, polished and high reflection surface of ALGLAS coating. • Resistance to corrosive environments Outstanding even in salty environments. • Resistance to chemnical attack The same as that of borosilicate glass. • “Work places, where workers are exposed to special hazards when the artificial lighting fails, must be provided with emergency lighting of sufficient light intensity” (Article 33 38.3). CARBON FILTER: advantages for optics of luminaires GE Lighting’s emergency lighting equipment can be divided into two groups: Equipment with permanent operation: where the emergency lamps gets always supply voltage either normal or emergency lighting is needed. Even a light, thin film of contaminants accumulated on the reflector of a luminaire can cause a significant loss in light output. Even under ideal cleaning conditions and using the best known cleaning materials, contamination on a reflector is extremely difficult to remove once it is “backed on”. In the field it is very difficult to restore a reflector to its original condition due to permanent damage imparted during cleaning. In a water-tight luminaire sealed by appropriate gaskets and incorporated a charcoal filter, contamination of the optics will reduce the light output by average of 1% per year compared to the 4-5% common in case of luminaires without filters. Optics can be contaminated also by solid particles (dust) and gases and vapours. Especially vapours can corrode the optics and forms a coating backed on by the heat of lamp. The chemical analysis of the accumulation has revealed not burned carbohydrates, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide. As a matter of fact, the “self-regenerating” charcoal filter seems to be the only effective tool against the above materials (gases and vapours), because when the optics compartment inhaust the air filled with them, the filter can absorb them in large quantity. When luminaire will be switched on, the exhausted hot air can clean the filter. The figure shows the favourable effect of a charcoal filter on total light output. The lamp depreciation is 6% per year (dotted line), the depreciation of optical assembly is 5% for a non-filtered luminaire versus 1% per year for a filtered luminaire. Therefore, if a new lamp is installed and the reflector is cleaned at the end of an assumed four-year re-lamping interval, the efficiency of a filtered luminaire (which was decreased to 73%) can bring significantly up to 98% of the original value (or to 87% in case of non-filtered luminaire). Combined emergency luminaire can contain one or more standard lamps. Equipment with non-permanent operation: where the emergency lamps operate only when the normal lighting is out of order. IMPORTANT: read carefully the installation instructions, which can be found in all packaging and keep them exactly when installing or wiring the equipment. For this reason, there is today a need not only for the construction of professional sporting complexes, but also for more modest centres for amateur use. While the larger structures for professional use are normally created by engineering firms, the building of smaller centres for hosting minor tournaments, competitions or simply leisure time sports is usually entrusted to medium/small installation companies that must nonetheless be able to guarantee a suitable lighting system to the facility. The aim of this publication is to lend a hand in achieving such an end. Installation of power supply units for outdoor facilities Sporting facilities comprising lighting complexes with discharge lamps, which require auxiliary equipment for the overall power supply (starters, ballast units, capacitors, etc.) demand special attention during installation. Equipment must firstly be installed as near as possible to the lamp to prevent the weakening of lighting pulses or excessive voltage drops. In most cases, it is not possible to install all auxiliary structures near to the lamp; indeed, light fittings are placed at a considerable height on poles or floodlamp towers when illuminating sports stadiums, storage yards, car parks, railroad yards, etc. In cases such as the above, repair or maintenance operations to equipment installed near the light source would be quite problematic. For this reason, auxiliary units are often located at the base of the support structure, in watertight enclosures (for small facilities) or in closed, protected cabins, in compliance with the maximum permissible distance between the power supply circuit and the lamp. The above-mentioned cabins are usually have a metal or fibreglass blend structure, and are sized to meet the following requirements: • adequate ventilation to keep the temperature of power supply units and capacitors within a certain limit. Power supply units are therefore generally installed above ground, to prevent generated heat from damaging sensitive parts, such as starters and capacitors. Ventilation should be favoured by means of air vents, protected by metal wiring. Care must be taken to ensure that the protective wiring itself does not hamper ventilation. If pace is readily available, the cabin construction should develop lengthwise rather than upwards. • protection from the elements. The cabin must be adequate covered to prevent the penetration of wind-driven rain. • easy access for maintenance personnel. • if accessible to the general public, the cabin should be protected by locks. The right solution The table on the next page will allow the reader to identify the most appropriate solution for each type of sporting activity, training or competition. Measurements of the sports are (to be considered indicative) and the exact location of support structures are easily identified by the drawings in axonometric perspective. To obtain double the illumination values of those shown, simply double the number of fittings without varying the relevant parameters. For the sake of space, the orientation of the fittings represented in the drawings covers only a quarter or half of the field; clearly, since the position of supports is symmetrical, the number of fittings and their orientation will be identical for all quarters or halves. The various solutions also include DEVIATION and ELEVATION values in degrees in relation to the playing surface. The following information is also included: floodlight and lamp type; support height; number of fittings; DEGREE OF UNIFORMITY E min/med - E min/max; electric power employed; floodlight beam.
