Candidate Spotlight
Anyone seeking political office is invited and
encouraged to announce their candidacy in the
Candidate Spotlight. It is an opportunity to tell the voters
why you are running, goals if elected, etc. It is not a forum
for bashing an opponent, and there is no charge.
Laona High School Drama
Presents "The Boardinghouse"
Merlin Van Buren
Candidate for
Assembly in the
34th Assembly
District
First off, if you live in the Forest County townships
of Alvin, Argonne, Armstrong Creek, Caswell, Crandon,
Hiles, Popple River or Ross welcome to the 34th
Assembly. With redistricting you are now in the 34th
Assembly District. The good thing, this year it is an open
seat. The incumbent chose not to run, so you get to
choose a new representative, to represent you in
Madison.
I am running for the 34th Assembly, because I am
not happy with the representation we have been receiving
in Madison. I believe that you deserve to have someone
who represents you and not special interest groups. I
believe you deserve to have someone who will represent
you, your family, your schools and your community in
Madison.
I was born and raised on a small farm near
Waupun. Graduated from Waupun High School in 1978,
and graduated from UW Madison in 1982. After college I
moved to the Chicago suburbs and lived and worked in
the Chicago area until my wife and I moved to Rhinelander
17 years ago. My wife is a Speech Pathologist working at
the hospital in Rhinelander. I work in the purchasing
department at Drs Foster & Smith. We have two sons aged
23 and 19.
When you vote, you will find 4 candidates on the
ballot. So how do you choose who to vote for? At the
Assembly level I think it is important to vote for someone
who has been active and involved in the community, and
someone who you trust to represent you in Madison.
I have always been active in our community and
church:
-soccer coach; youth level through Rhinelander HS JV
-Cub Scout leader
-Active member of First Congregational United Church of
Christ: Christian Education Board, Christian Education
Chair, Vice Moderator, Moderator, Sunday School
Teacher, Vacation Bible School Leader, Youth Leader and
Pastor Search Committee.
-Rhinelander School Board member
My elected experience on the school board also
sets me apart from the other three candidates. Crandon
schools just received another round of funding cuts.
Which candidate will work to get your school district the
funding it deserves? I am the only candidate who has
come out with a strong plan to improve the funding for our
rural schools.
I consider myself a vanishing breed, a moderate.
Something that is difficult to find in elected officials. I
believe this positions me to be the best candidate to be
able to work with the other party. It is more difficult to run
as a moderate. You often do not get the solid backing of
your own party, but I believe that most voters fall into this
category. This is who I am, and I believe this is what we
need right now in an elected official.
I believe you have a real opportunity to elect
someone that will truly represent you, your family, your
community and your schools in Madison. For that to
happen, I need your vote on November 6th.

the 36th Assembly race. He has lived in the district for 57

who are determined to find a buried treasure in the basement.

Nineteen local actors to perform
"Almost, Maine" at
Nicolet College in November
When Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall put out an
audition call for the Nicolet Players production of Almost, Maine,
he imagined he’d be selecting a cast of six or eight actors. Each
actor would be required to play two or more of the 19 roles that
playwright John Cariani wrote into his popular play about life in
rural Maine.
“This currently is the most produced play among high school
and college theatres,” Nuttall said, “and most of the productions
are done with a small cast. But that’s not how it turned out for us.
We had a huge turnout of 36 for the auditions and I had a hard time
eliminating anyone. I ended up casting the 19 roles with 19 actors.”
The play is written as a bouquet of nine two-character vignettes,
all taking place at nine o’clock on a snowy winter night, with the
Northern Lights lighting up the sky. The characters are quirky,
small-town folk, drawn from the playwright’s experience of
growing up in rural Maine. Weird things happen under the
influence of the Northern Lights: there are unexpected kisses between strangers, truths blurted out between ex-lovers, metaphors
that materialize into reality, and some slapstick and bizarrely surreal behaviors. It’s a little bit of Northern Exposure mixed with
Twilight Zone.
But mostly, said Nuttall, Almost, Maine is a romantic comedy that will pull at your heart strings. “The play explores the
quirks people have in dealing with love and relationships,” he said, “and there are some absolutely hilarious moments, because we
see pieces of ourselves in each of these scenes.”
Nuttall added, “The strength of the play is that it’s written by an actor who knows what actors need to bring their character
to life. In these short scenes, the actor gets an opportunity to explore the defenses and coping mechanisms his character requires
to deal with a difficult situation.”
Justin Tucker (he goes by Tucker) of Rhinelander plays the character Jimmy in a scene where Jimmy runs into his exgirlfriend at a bar and tries to win her back. “What Jimmy doesn’t know yet is, she’s having a bachelorette party and about to marry
this really awesome guy,” Tucker explained. “As he begins to realize what’s going on, you can see that things are not going his way.
The challenge for me is to convey what Jimmy is feeling inside while he says things that are completely opposite. So it’s not what
my character is saying, but how he says it.”
This is Tucker’s debut as an actor, though he did take an acting class with Nuttall. He’s paired with Anna Schwartz, with whom he
coincidentally read the role during auditions. “Jim did a great job with casting,” Tucker said. “Everybody is perfect for their role.”
Anna Schwartz, also of Rhinelander, plays Sandrine, the girl who broke up with Jimmy to date someone else. “The scene
between Tucker and me is really about Jimmy’s character,” she said. “I’m just bouncing off him. It’s so awkward when Sandrine
runs into Jimmy. His reactions to the situation are what make the scene both very funny and a little sad.”
Audiences may remember Schwartz in last spring’s play, Harvey, in which she played the role of Nurse Kelly with fine
comedic ardor. This comedy, Schwartz said, “will hit a little closer home. Almost, Maine, could be Rhinelander. The play is all about
love – falling in and out of love, and individual stories of love and heartbreak. People will identify with the characters, and they will
leave feeling really good. It’s such a heartwarming play.”
Performances take place Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3, at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, November 4, at 2 pm;
Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 8, 9, and 10, at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, November 11, at 2 pm. Tickets are $9 for the
general public and $7 for students and seniors and can be purchased in advance online by visiting nicoletlive.com, or calling the

Nicolet College Foundation
to hold annual fundraising
event Oct. 30, Nov. 1
The Nicolet College Foundation will hold its
biggest fundraising event of the year Oct. 30 and Nov. 1
when A Day for Nicolet takes place throughout the
Northwoods.
This is the 12th year of the event.
“Every dollar contributed to A Day for Nicolet is
used for student scholarships,” said Heather Schallock,
executive director of the Nicolet College Foundation.
“These scholarships have played an important role in
supporting Nicolet students as they earn their degrees
and diplomas. Without this financial support, many
students would find it impossible to continue their
education.”
More than 1,000 scholarships have been
awarded through A Day for Nicolet since the event started.
Total raised to date is more than $1 million.
Contributors to A Day for Nicolet include
businesses, organizations, clubs, and individuals. During
the day itself, volunteers make personal visits and phone
calls to potential donors asking for their support. Part of
the success of the event is the matching funds received
from generous benefactors. These funds are used to
match other gifts and provide named scholarships.
Anyone wanting more information regarding A
Day for Nicolet or would like to make a contribution can
contact Schallock at (715) 365-4518, 1-800-544-3039, ext.

Senior Chatter
Submitted by Kate Schultz
Nutrition Facts
1.) Why would you want boring potato chips and
french fries when you could have a sweet potato? There
like a potato but better, they've got a sweet flavor, they're
good for you, and they're bright orange! Try sweet potato
fries, baked sweet potatoes, sweet potato chips or even
raw slices of sweet potatoes! Yum!
2.) In the mood for something sweet? Grab a
sweet bell pepper. Green, red, yellow, orange or purple,
peppers are crunchy, flavorful, and packed with good-foryou vitamins and minerals. Try them plain or dip them in
hummus!
3.) Thirsty? Instead of soda, drink some water!
Your body is made of about 65% water, so you need to
drink a lot of it. Fill up a water bottle, drink a glass at each
meal, and get a sip each time you pass a drinking fountain.
And you can make water more exciting to drink by adding
a little 100% juice to it. Water is the perfect thirst quencher.
4.) Did you know? The word for dinner used to
mean breakfast. Breakfast also used to be the largest
meal of the day. Breakfast is still the most important meal
of the day, so make sure you eat some! Go to foods that
will keep your brain working well until lunch, like milk,
eggs or peanut butter, whole grain cereal, bagels, or toast
and fresh fruit or 100% juice.
5.) Did you know? The color orange was named
after the fruit! The word orange itself was introduced to
English through the Spanish word "naranja". The English
dropped the n and eventually we got the word "orange",
and it eventually came to mean the color as well as the
fruit! Enjoy an orange today!
6.) Did you know? Strawberries are the only fruit
that has their seeds on the outside. The average
strawberry has 200 seeds. That's a lot! Biologically,
strawberries are related to roses. And a cup of
strawberries has more vitamin C than an orange! Enjoy
some strawberries, fresh or maybe even frozen in a
smoothie!
7.) Did you know? An apple tree can produce up
to 400 apples per year, and there are over 700 different
kinds of apples being produced in the world. Whether you
like apples that are yellow, red, or green, bite into an apple
for terrific taste and crunch. Or try it sliced and dipped in
some peanut butter - yum!
8.) Did you know? Cows drink up to 50 gallons of
water and eat 50 pounds of food every day. The cows then
convert that fuel into the 6 gallons of milk they produce
daily. You can't drink 6 gallons of milk all at once, but you
can drink a glass or two! Drink some milk today.
9.) Make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
more exciting by using whole-grain bread instead of white
bread, and by using real fruit instead of jelly. Try peanut
butter banana sandwiches, peanut butter strawberry
sandwiches, peanut butter blueberry sandwiches, or
another creation of your own!
10.) Did you know? In the United States, more
tomatoes are consumed than any other single fruit or
vegetable! Botanically a fruit, it took a ruling by the
Supreme Court in 1893 to make the tomato a vegetable.
Fruit or vegetable, enjoy tomatoes in soups, chili,
sandwiches, sauces or plain!
11.) In the mood for a frozen treat? You can make
your own popsicles using pieces of fruit and 100% juice!
Put berries or chopped pieces of banana, pineapple,
mango, or any other fruit in a paper cup, pour some juice
over the top, put a popsicle stick in it, and stick it in the
freezer. Yummy, frozen goodness.
12.) Can you guess which fruit is eaten by more
people worldwide than any other fruit? It's not apples,
bananas, or oranges...it's mangos! Mangos were
originally grown in India, and now they are grown all over
the world. Green and pink on the outside and orange on
the inside, mangos are sweet and delicious. Eat some
mango and think about people eating it in India, Uganda,
Jamaica and lots of other places!

My treasure my light by day and by night;
The glow of your beauty must be a radiant sight.
I envision you dancing to a joyful tune;
A graceful Angel above the stars and moon.
I know you are safe in a beautiful place;
Filled with happiness and peace in God’s good
grace.
Thanks for the love you have given to me;
Thanks for the good in life you made many see.
As you have grown in Heaven above;
Down here on Earth you are forever loved.
My treasure my light by day and by night;
We will walk side by side when the time is right.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
has released the new School Report Cards this week. A
school's accountability score reflects many measures that
factor into a school's performance. While just one part of a
new, statewide accountability system for schools, the School
Report Card provides detailed information about the
performance of student groups at the school, including racial
groups, disability, poverty, and English language learners.
Although the Report Cards for the School District of
Wabeno Area indicate that expectations are being met, the
District continues to strive to improve learning and to help all
students to be successful. The accountability score will help
school staff determine what areas the school does well in
and where it needs improvement.
The School District of Wabeno Area Goals for 20122013 are to:
1. Continue to build a collaborative culture, embrace high
expectations for all students, and create necessary support
systems so that all students are successful.
2. Continue to assess, expand, and coordinate the uses of
technology in teaching and learning.
3. Continue to promote and provide opportunities for parent
and community involvement in the school.
4. Increase the overall attendance rate so that less than 5% of
the entire student population is absent each quarter.
5. Increase student achievement in math as measured by
MAPS and WKCE

fans in the area. This year's production, The
Boardinghouse, is a knee-slapping comedy by Vern
Harden that is sure to have audiences laughing from
beginning to end with the wacky cast of residents at the
boardinghouse. Performances will be held at the Laona
High School Gymnasium on Friday, November 2, and
Saturday, November 3 at 7:00 PM. There will also be a
matinee performance on Sunday, November 4, at 2 PM.
Tickets will be available at the door for all performances
and will be $3.00 for students and $5.00 for adults.
The evening of fun occurs at the Home Sweet
Home Boardinghouse, where life is anything but normal.
Miss Harriet, played by Senior Nikki Babich, runs a clean,
cozy home with the help of the none-too-bright and
perpetually terrified Tweenie, portrayed by Senior Alanna
Benaszeski. As the play progresses, the audience meets
the zaniest array of boarders as one can meet. There's Mr.
Richards, played by Senior Zach Reeves, the poet who
practices dying to spark his inspiration. Gladys Klotz,
Senior Molly Thornton, is a taxidermist who has a direct line to the spirit world and prefers her men stuffed, while Martha
Willis, played by Senior Samantha Trebtoske, has every imaginable illness, from leprosy to pneumonia to heart
palpitations... and loves every minute of it. Poor Hortense, played by Junior Laura Mahaffey tries her best to keep up with
Ivy, a free spirited 'artist' who is portrayed by Junior Elycia Baker.
Finally, the suave and mysterious Dirk Shadow, played by Senior Jake Ambrosius and his sister Veronica,
played by Senior Catherine Krawze, have just arrived on the scene to hunt for Captain Schnook's pirate treasure buried
in the basement... or is it really just something left over from dinner? Leave it to the clever and ever-vigilant Dr. Sni-fell,
played by Sophomore and drama rookie Jacob Kerner, to unravel the mystery.
The play is under the direction of Carol Bartlein, who with this show, will be extending a farewell to Laona Drama
after 28 years of drama production. The lighting and sound crew will be led by seniors Kimberly Mentz who is returning
for her third year as lighting tech. Also on the tech crew are Senior Shania Simonis, Junior Heidi Radey and Freshman
Leslie Lukas. Tom Bartlein, Laura Bobbe, Zach Reeves, Tom Cleereman, Austin Babich, and Ryan Kelley completed the
set construction. The set was painted by Bill Peterson and the cast and crew.

year. Her class won the traveling trophy for being respectful and kind to our friends. Keep
up the good work 4K ers!
Mr. Lowery's 6th graders are stepping it up. His class won the traveling trophy for
following the classroom expectation of helping to keep good communication from home
and school. They remember to have their assignment books signed, turn in notes, and
get their purple calendar on their refrigerator! Keep up the good work 6th Graders!
