When I was a kid, I remember thinking that hitting the year 1990 would be a great big deal. And to make it to the year
2000?! There were times I wondered if the planet would last that long! And here we stand at 2015, and I no longer wonder
if the world will keep spinning, but rather stand in eager anticipation of what God will do in the days and years to come in His
Kingdom -- especially here at Grace in Pocatello. Yes, there are protestors in some of our streets and rogue nations
messing with the internet and there are still suicide bombers and ebola and poverty in our own backyard. Jesus reminded
us that these things would endure until He returns. But He has placed His Church in our world to live by His grace and love
our neighbor every day that we have. I'm excited for the opportunity to be His Church in the coming year. Here's why:
You may have heard reports in various outlets that the Church is in decline. That may be true in North America among
mainstream protestant denominations, but thankfully there are "hotbeds of Christian discipleship" happening all over the
nation. While we saw a slight decline in attendance and giving at Grace, and our school went through a decline in
enrollment over several years, we're on our way back, with baptisms and new members and increasing visitors and a full
11:00 service. Our school has double grades throughout and has a full ECC with a waiting list for future students.
Leadership shared with the congregation that we had some financial need in meeting our commitments. And God's people
stepped up! While we are still a ways away from seeing our "trend line" shift completely, the generosity you showed during
November and December has put our congregation back in the black, and for that I'm thankful. Not simply because we can
now meet our obligations, but because it allows us to do ministry faithfully without the fear of fretting and focusing on
finances. Secondly, I'm so proud of our congregation who rises to the unique needs that arise in our community. From the
Oktoberfest to helping a local pastor with medical bills to backpacks for kids in our area to fixing cars or providing meals or
housing for wayfarers, you are generous -- and this is a reflection of God's character.
Whether it's building a house for a family in Mexico or it's starting a new high school, or even contemplating moving our
entire operation, the people of this congregation don't shy away from big opportunities. I cannot tell you how many
congregations lose members over whether to buy new hymnals or if the coffee can be moved from the foyer to the gym...
This doesn't mean that we always do the "big thing." Sometimes it's not right. But when God opens doors, we have been
blessed with faithful people who walk through those doors to places God leads us.
Our elementary school is blessed to serve our community in many ways. But one key purpose that our schools accomplish
is to build a bridge into our community. We provide a service that others cannot, and we do it at a level that others cannot,
with faith and accountability and expectations that get the most from what we invest, from our kids to our finances. This
bridge has brought many to faith, and we're seeing it happen again and again. This January will mark the largest group of
interested new members in many years, and for that I'm thankful.
In the end, none of our "accomplishments" are our own, are they? We would not be blessed unless we were continually
seeking to do what God is blessing. And so we stand upon the person and work of Jesus Christ, given as a gift to humanity
in the Incarnation in order to reveal the truth of His love and grace to a fallen humanity. And this is what we are about and
will remain about -- by the grace of God.
May you know the rich blessings of God in this new year.

GRACE WELCOME BRUNCH
Our Grace Welcome Brunch happens on the first
Sunday of every month right after the 11:00 am
service and is designed for those who are new to our
Grace family.
This delicious meal, so graciously prepared for us by
members of our church, is hosted by our Pastors and
their families. It’s an opportunity, in a casual setting,
to ask any questions you may have about Grace
Lutheran Church.
Our next welcome brunch will be on Sunday,
February 1, 2015 at the home of Dean & Jill
Schmitt (2940 Trapper) at 12:30 pm.

Please plan on attending our annual state of the
church event on Saturday January 24 at Grace. We
will begin with refreshments (continental breakfast
provided) and fellowship at 8:00 a.m. At 8:30, we
will have a 30 minute presentation on the "state of
the church" as we reflect on key ministries from
2014. At 9:00, we will have a full presentation on
the proposal to add a high school program to our
current school, which would include the building of
a gymnasium/classroom complex. A time for
questions will follow, concluding with a vote of the
congregation on the proposal.
This is the culmination of about 18 months of work
by a High School steering committee and represents
literally thousands of hours of combined effort,
which would significantly impact our overall
ministry and influence within our greater
community. This is a time where we eagerly desire
as many of our members as possible to invest
themselves in this moment of key decision making.
We long for God's wisdom as expressed through His
faithful people!
Child care will be provided and we plan to be
finished before noon. It would be particularly
helpful to have you contact our church office by

BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS ON
SUNDAY, JAN. 11TH
Our Parish Nurses will be doing blood pressure
checks here at Grace on Sunday, Jan. 11th – after
the 8:30 service, after the education hour and
after the 11 am service – in the lobby.
Out to Lunch Bunch
The Out to Lunch Bunch gets together once a
month at a favorite restaurant for lunch and
fellowship. Both men and women are welcome to
join this fun group that explores new and well-liked
restaurants in the area. Everyone is welcome!
This month they will meet on Tuesday, January
13th at Puerta Vallarta Restaurant in the (160 W.
Cedar) at noon.

Pinochle Fellowship
Pinochle fellowship will meet on Saturday,
January 10th at the home of George & Patricia

LIFE IN CHRIST CLASS
Are you interested in knowing more about what
the Lutheran Church believes and teaches (which is
firmly a traditional, Biblical approach)? If so, you
may want to attend the new Life in Christ Class
that will be starting on Monday, January 12th at
7:00 pm in the large conference room by the gym.
Childcare will be provided upon request. Whether
you are new to the Lutheran faith or just want a
refresher on basic doctrine, this class is for you.

Grace Lutheran Women’s retreat right after the
11am service in the old school cafeteria (right off
the gym). Discussion includes a speaker and topic
for our retreat as well as starting to fill the
responsibilities of the various positions (co-chairs,
secretary, craft committee, music, women’s
mission, decorating, Easter roll fundraiser, etc., of
our committee). Don’t be afraid to come and see
what we’re all about. With many helping, it’s a
great experience, especially to see it all come
together in a great weekend in September of
growth in our relationship with each other and
God.

MILITARY MINISTRY
Our January project will be Super Bowl packages for
soldiers stationed out of town and/or of the county.
Grace Lutheran School student are collecting the box
items as part of a “making a difference project”. We
will be sending 17 packages this year. Shipping costs
are approximately $18 per box. We are asking for
contributions to cover the shipping expenses. Please
make checks to Grace Lutheran Church and earmark it
for military ministry.
An opportunity to volunteer will be Tuesday, January
20th from 5 to 7 pm in the lunchroom area for
packaging of the boxes. Pizza will be provided for
volunteers.
We will have a meeting TODAY following the 11am
service, in the large conference room. Lunch will be
provided.
Winter Family Camp – February 6-8, 2015
Join us for tubing and snowshoeing, snowmen building
contests and games by the fire. You can bring your own
snowmobiles or rent snowmobiles from Smiley Creek
Lodge for some added fun. Space is limited in the comfort
of the Retreat Center, so register early!
Men’s Winter Weekend – February 27 – March 1, 2015
Our staff will make you feel at home and comfortable in our
retreat center. Enjoy a steak dinner in sunny snow country!
Activities include cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and
even take a trip down the tubing run!

“The Book of Ecclesiastes” led by Pastor Jim Von
Busch **
The great Hebrew King and philosopher named Solomon
wrote a book called Ecclesiastes. In this book, Solomon
calls us to joy, but not to a joy that is based on
circumstances. The joy Solomon calls us to a deep joy, a joy
that thinks and is based upon truth. He invites us to meditate
on God's Word and the world in which we live, his
conclusion is that only believers can enjoy the vanity that
surrounds us on every side.
Location: In the middle school commons (at the very end
of the middle school wing.)
How to Show the Love of Christ in Word and Deed to Your LDS
Neighbors and Friends **
This study is presented with encouragement to build
friendships with sensitivity. It discusses how to share the
grace of God wisely in the context of these relationships. It
will present valuable perspectives of the Mormon community
given by those who have lived this experience.
It will illuminate the experience of the Latter-day Saints
through:
•the core stories that form the LDS worldview
•a window into what life is like for most active LDS members
•the experiences that shape the powerful shared identity of Latter-day Saints
•the way LDS members understand truth through the lenses of experience and LDS church
authority
This study will also explain the differences between teachings of Biblical historical
Christianity and the teachings of the Latter-day Saints.

With the Lord Begin Your Task
Ring in the NEW YEAR for 2015 with a Plan to Read Your Bible
As I write this, I’m finishing up a year of reading through the Bible. I fully anticipate that I will finally complete a
New Year’s resolution I’ve made for years but never kept. You don’t know how many times I resolved on
January 1 to read the Bible in a year only to get bogged down in Leviticus, Numbers, or Deuteronomy. This year
with the help of my new smart phone, I will do it (God-willing), all the way through!
This Bible reading plan is simply called “The One Year Bible” and you can set your phone to any number of Bible
translations. Typically, when I study the Bible I use the English Standard Version or the New International Study
Bible (1984) but for my personal Bible reading plan, which I knew would be undertaken very early in the
morning (when I’m not quite awake), I chose the New Living Translation. I think what made it happen this time
with the Bible app on my phone is that I could not only read the designated passages for the day but I could
also listen to them if I was multitasking - usually exercising or getting dressed in the morning. This particular
app directed me to read a portion of the Old Testament, a portion of the New Testament, a portion of the
Psalms (I went through all 150 Psalms twice) and a few verses from Proverbs each day. There was only one time
I remember being a week behind and almost giving up. After that when I anticipated a really crazy busy day or
week, I would read ahead when I had a slower day on my schedule.
So what surprised me as I wended my way through the 66 books of the Bible? Though it was hard to read the
prophets in the Old Testament as they warned the Children of Israel again and again to stay away from the
worship practices of idols and alliances with foreign countries, I could hear God’s love and longing for His
people. With warning after warning came the tender promises of God. I thought I would share a few that
struck my heart:
Micah 7:7 “But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”
Nahum 1:7a “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.”
Zephaniah 3:17 “The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will
quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zechariah 13:9b “They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will
say, ‘The Lord is our God.’”
Malachi 4:2a “But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.”
These passages are wonderful gems often overlooked, but there for each of us to discover in His Word.
So as you think about 2015 and what you might want to pursue, I challenge you to think about finding a Bible
plan that suites your lifestyle, time, and personality. For example, I liked it that when I finished my readings for
the day and received the feedback “Great Job!”. The Plan reminded me of what percentage of the Bible I had
left to read. There was also a check mark next to each day I had finished. That does fit my tending toward a
Type A personality but may not fit yours at all - so do a little research and see what you might come up with.
For me, I’m thinking a Bible plan that uses the chronological history of the Old and New Testament might work
for me this coming year.
“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
What motivation these words from God provides for me to continue
to pursue reading His Word. I pray the same for you in 2015!

We’d love to have you join us as we plan for our 2015 Grace Women’s Retreat. (September 18-20, 2015)
We typically meet once a month from January through September on Sunday after the 11am service where
we enjoy a simple potluck and follow a planning schedule (we’re coming up on our twenty-third annual
women’s retreat so we’ve worked out a lot of the bugs BUT we’re always excited for new and fresh ideas!)
We select our speaker, raise funds for scholarships (Easter roll fundraiser), and work on the details for the

year’s theme is “Born in the USA!” The auction
will be held at the Hirning Buick GMC
dealership, 509 Yellowstone. Watch for more

Why Send Your Children to Grace?
A recent study involving nearly 1,000 families
showed the following reasons parents sent their
children to private schools.

access to teachers and administration
higher levels of response by staff to

more art, PE, music and foreign language

field trip and sports opportunities
community service as a part of the school
program
parents feeling welcome at the facility
It is interesting that these ten items were
indicated by parents as MORE IMPORTANT than
test scores. Right after Christmas break, reenrollment for the 2015-2016 school year begins
at Grace Lutheran School, and the deadline is
February 12th. After that date, we will begin
placing new applicants. If you would like to learn
more about the opportunities at Grace Lutheran
School for your child, please contact the school
starting in January for the best possible chance at
placement and for information about how to apply
for Tuition Assistance. Our Tuition Assistance
program grants funds to families whose children
are in Kindergarten through 8th grade, based
solely upon financial need. And if your child is
already attending Grace, no matter what the
reason, don’t forget to show them lots of love,
give them a hug, and re-enroll by the deadline!
Spirit Week!
Every year, we hold Spirit Week
at Grace Lutheran School to
gear up our athletic teams who
will be traveling to the Christ
Classic Tournament. Spirit Week
this year will be January 12-15.
Each day features a special event, leading up to
a Pep Assembly as we send our teams and
competitors off to the Christ Classic
Tournament.
Christ Classic Tournament!
On Friday, January 17th Grace
Lutheran School middle school
students will travel to Murray,
Utah, for the annual Christ Classic
Tournament held at Christ Lutheran
School. Tournament competitions
include boys’ and girls’ basketball,
cheerleading, a Geography Bee, and
Mathematics competition. Spirit Week is held
each year to rev up our teams and send them
off ready to compete! Be watching GraceNotes

which will include a special pep rally!
Royals Basketball!
The boys’ basketball season gets underway in
January with their first home game against
Watersprings on Monday, January 12th at 3:30
pm. Their schedule includes several home
games. Everyone is welcome to come out and
cheer for our Royals teams. If you would like a
complete home game schedule, please contact
the school office. All home games start at 3:30.

Bible Quizzers Win Again!
Grace Lutheran’s Bible Quiz teams traveled to
McCall in December for a Bible Quiz meet.
Team #1 members, Joel Besel, Cole Roske,
Connor Slack, and Jace Horrocks took first place
at this second meet of four for this year. The #2
team – Lillee Casselman, Maddie Phinney, and
Elle Barnes – took 4th place out of ten teams. Our
#3 team – Christian Moore, Tim Pennington, Josh
Potter, Brayden Smith, and Joseph VaughnSpencer – took 6th place. In individual
competition, Joel Besel placed 3rd, Lillee
Casselman placed 4th, and Jace Horrocks placed
9th. In addition, Josh Potter, Cole Roske, Connor
Slack, and Tim Pennington all placed in the top
15 out of 40 participants. We’re so proud of our
Bible Quizzers!!!!
