Principal’s Newsletter Northeast High School May/June 2015 Dear Northeast Parents, Our students are finally getting a chance to enjoy the spring like weather here at the Home of the Eagle. Athletes are finally competing on our athletic fields and not having their games and practices cancelled due to foul weather. Students are also getting a chance to enjoy their lunch and Independence outdoors on a consistent basis. Along with the advent of spring, we are also looking ahead to the next phase of our students’ academic careers. This means preparing the seniors for their last marking period of high school. The counselors are continuing the process of meeting with each of the senior students on their caseload to finalize last-minute college and scholarship applications, credit counts, and current grades in required courses. Seniors, be sure to keep “the end in mind” and remember our numerous conversations about finishing your time at Northeast High School strong. Parents of seniors, please continue to talk to your student about the completion of their graduation requirements. Wherever you hear the reply, “I don’t know,” please do not hesitate to contact our counseling office for pertinent information. Also seniors, one final note: I remind you weekly on the morning announcements to adhere to the Anne Arundel County Public School’s alcohol and controlled dangerous substance (drug) use policy so that you do not sacrifice your privilege to participate in prom and your graduation ceremony. Please remind each other to make good choices. Stay out of situations where you are exposed to drugs and alcohol so that you, your family, the Northeast faculty and staff, and your fellow classmates can celebrate your successful completion of high school. This should be a joyous time, so be safe, and enjoy the walk to the stage on May 29. For our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students, on May 11, you will bring home your course selection verification sheets. Parents, please look over the verification sheets to be sure that the classes your student has chosen aligns with their academic plan beyond high school. If there are any changes necessary to your student’s course selections, please note them on the verification sheet. These verification sheets will be collected back from your student on May 12. They moved on to compete, representing the state of Maryland, in the National Restaurant Association ProStart Student Invitational in Disneyland, California April 17 - 21. Brittany placed in the top 5 at the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Regional Conference in the category Health Care Management. Brittany attended the State conference on April 23-25 and placed 5th in the Health Care Administration State FBLA Leadership Conference held in Hunt Valley. NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE Members of the Class of 2015 who hope to play Division I or II athletics need to process a form for the Clearinghouse. When this form is mailed with the fee, make sure that the applicant keeps track of his/ her pin number. This number will be needed any time an applicant wants to access the status of his/her application. SENIOR TRANSCRIPTS Final transcripts will be sent to colleges after the report cards have been issued. Report cards are scheduled to be mailed from the Board of Education the end of June. Final transcripts will be mailed during the month of July. Graduating seniors who have completed one of the high school Tech Prep programs of study with an average grade of “B” or better are eligible to receive free Anne Arundel Community College credits. To have your high school grades evaluated, seniors are reminded to ask your Tech Prep teacher for the Request for Evaluation of Tech Prep Credits form. Complete and mail the form and enroll at Anne Arundel Community College within one year of high school graduation. College credits will be placed on your college transcript after completing six credits of AACC college coursework with a grade of “C” or higher. SECONDARY SUMMER SCHOOL At the time of registration, the student or guardian must present a completed Secondary Summer School Registration Form. All sections of the registration form must be properly filled out before the student will be permitted to register. School fees: $300 per course or $100 per course (Tuition reduction available for families who qualify) Checks or money orders only. Cash will not be accepted. THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR CHANGE OF ADDRESS If a student moves, the parent must provide written proof of residency to the Registrar as soon as possible in order for the student records and mailing address to be updated. Proof of residency includes the mortgage/lease (plus Tenant Verification, if applicable) and current utility bill. Papers may also be faxed to the Registrar at 410-437-7012. Faxes must be received prior to enrolling and parents are responsible for obtaining all paperwork. All shots MUST be in compliance with Health Department regulations or the enrollment will not proceed. If you are not the custodial parent, you must provide documentation of custody or custodial rights from a divorce. If you are a step-parent, you must have a notarized statement from the parent to enroll your step-child. A current pay stub, W-2, bank statement, or official government mail in your name, at that address, must also be presented. Yearbooks hold special memories, and your child will treasure hers forever. The cost of the yearbook is $100. Students with pre-ordered books are invited to an after-school book signing party with music and refreshments available. The last day to pre-order books online is May 1. Only students who have pre-ordered books will be able to receive their books during the party. After the book signing party, leftover books will be sold on a first-come-firstserved basis during I and I, second chance breakfast, and after school. Attention Class of 2016 IMPORTANT Senior Portrait Information Dear Rising Seniors and Parents of Rising Seniors: Your senior year is quickly approaching, and that means it’s time to take Senior Portraits! Senior portraits will be taken in May, July, and September at Northeast High School. Lifetouch / Prestige will assign a date to you by postcard. NHS Yearbook works only with Lifetouch for yearbook portraits. So even if you will NOT be purchasing photographs through Lifetouch, but you DO want your senior portrait to appear in your senior yearbook, you should still have your portraits taken by Lifetouch on your assigned appointment date in order to appear in the yearbook. Remember! If you do not have your portrait taken by Prestige, your portrait will NOT appear in the yearbook. It costs nothing to have your yearbook picture taken, so be sure you come to school on the correct day and time to have your picture taken even if you are not purchasing portraits. If you miss your appointment, please come on one of the make-up days after contacting Lifetouch / Prestige. It is important that once you receive your proofs from Lifetouch that you go online and select the portrait that you would like placed in the 2016 yearbook. Choose ONLY a picture taken in the traditional tux or drape with a BLUE BACKGROUND. If you select a portrait with anything other than a blue background, the yearbook staff will choose an appropriate one for you. Finally, please understand that the senior portrait pages of the yearbook must be completed by our staff by the end of September. Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center sits on 24 wooded acres at the headwaters of the Severn River in Millersville, a perfect location for teaching environmental stewardship in the outdoors. ECO-Imaginarium For students entering grades: 3–6 The goal of the Art Trek program is to challenge and encourage students with aspiring interests and emerging skills in art. Taught by county art teachers, the Art Trek experience offers drawing, painting, sculpture, as well as other activities. Students will have the opportunity to become acquainted with new friends with similar artistic interests. Swimming and canoeing will be offered for each student. These activities are supervised by certified aquatic instructors at all times. $275.00 ($100.00 deposit, $175.00 to be paid upon acceptance.) Financial Assistance Scholarships may be available to students. Meals Students will be provided with lunch and a snack each day. Application Procedures (page 7) 1. Art Enrichment program For students entering grades: 7–9 Dates: August 3–6 Time: 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. The goal of Anne Arundel County Public Schools Enrichment program is to provide students with an intensive studio experience with activities focusing on the environment around them and the opportunity to make independent artistic discoveries. This year’s activities include projects in sculpture, drawing, and a large collaborative artwork combining all students’ artistic strengths. Each Day brings a fresh perspective and exciting twists are in store – ART-rageous! 4. A $100.00 deposit must be returned with application forms (refunded if the student is not accepted). All Outdoor Education camps are open to any student who has an interest in the environment, making new friends, adventure, and personal growth. Staff Our staff consists of AACPS teachers as well as college students with experience in the areas of outdoor and environmental education. Volunteer counselors-in-training support the staff in many ways. Early Birds Camp Friendship Camp EBC I: June 22–25 | 9:00am–3:00 pm EBC II: July 27–30 | 9:00am–3:00 pm July 13–15 Students entering grades: K–2 If you are looking for a safe, nurturing camp that teaches young children to be good stewards of the natural environment, this camp is for you! Early Birds Camp will allow the young and often first-time camper many opportunities to explore, investigate, and experience a variety of nature-based activities. Daily activities will include science, music, art, movement, and swimming centered around the outdoor environment. A well trained staff will guide each young camper in these enriching experiences. The camp will run from Monday to Thursday, from 9am–3pm. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent. Lunch and snack will be provided each day. Payment/Refund Policy: Cost Full payment is due 30 days prior to start of camp. If full payment is not received by this time, your child’s reservation will not be held. After this date, we cannot guarantee that space will be available when your payment is received. If a cancellation is made before the 30 day time period, a 100% refund will be issued (less a $10 processing fee). If a cancellation is made any time between 30–15 days prior to the start of camp, a 50% refund will be issued (less a $10 processing fee). No refunds will be issued 14 days or less prior to the start of camp. Additionally, there shall be no partial refund granted for any camper’s late arrival, early withdrawal, non-arrival or dismissal for cause. Through a variety of hands-on activities, campers will investigate the natural environment and will participate in an environmental action project. Every day we challenge our campers to practice sustainable living by conserving water and electricity, reducing food waste, and even cooking a sustainable, locallysourced meal. And of course our campers will enjoy a variety of classic summer camp activities such as swimming, field games, archery, fishing, crabbing, and canoeing! Cost $400 includes meals, accommodations, activities, and instructional materials. Student entering grades 9–12 July 20–26 June 22–27 Echo-Adventure Camp is a seven day, six night residential camp for students that enjoy being outdoors. While participating in exciting outdoor challenges, campers will explore natural ecosystems, develop outdoor skills, and gain self-confidence and independence. In addition to fishing, crabbing, archery and camp crafts, campers will participate in a three night offsite tent camping trip which features hiking, meal preparation, camp games, and much more! Our trained lifeguards will direct water safety instruction and canoeing skills as well as lead a river tubing adventure! High Adventure Camp is a six day, five night residential camp for young outdoor enthusiasts looking to experience all that Maryland’s wilderness has to offer. Campers spend the first two days taking in all Arlington Echo has to offer—fishing, crabbing, canoeing on the Severn River, and teambuilding—and developing backcountry skills, including wildlife identification, campfire safety, cooking, campsite selection, and practicing Leave No Trace ethics. On the third morning we’ll wake up early and take a bus out to the backcountry to start our real adventure and put those skills to use! We’ll spend four days and three nights hiking and camping in one of Maryland’s most beautiful natural areas. Hiking all day to a remote campsite is one of nature’s most rewarding experiences, but can offer an at-times strenuous challenge. Our experienced staff will be there every step of the way to make sure every camper has a positive, memorable outdoor experience. Follow link to Register Online 5 Learn to Swim | Students ages: 3–11 years | June 22–25/July 29–July 2 The Learn to Swim Program is an expansion of the Outdoor Education Program’s commitment to water safety education. Seven different courses covering a variety of skill levels will be offered. The program objectives are to have students oriented to the aquatic environment, gain and build on basic skills, learn and refine different strokes, and acquire personal safety and rescue skills. The Learn to Swim program runs for two weeks, with eight total sessions. Cathy Bellarin, Teacher Specialist for the Drownproofing Program, is the Learn to Swim Director. 6:30 –7:30 p.m. Levels III, IV, and V Available Class Times for Lessons (✓) ✓ 11:15–11:55 ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ Lesson Descriptions Pre-School Level I (ages 3 and 4) Designed to develop a comfort level in and around the water as a readiness for learning to swim. It does not teach young children to be accomplished swimmers. It does provide the parent with necessary knowledge/skills to orient their child to the water. The emphasis is on having fun. Parent participation in the water is required. Pre-School Level II (ages 3 and 4) Designed for the preschool age child who is completely adjusted to and comfortable in the water. The child willingly swims under the water and has some swimming abilities. Introduction to Water Skills (Level I) Designed for the true beginner who is afraid of the water. Basic skills (water adjustment, floats, breath control, personal safety) will be taught as students progress through the program. Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Level II) Designed for the beginner who is comfortable in the water and has some basic shallow water skills. Students will learn to float without support, recover to a vertical position and begin to move through the water without support. Stroke Development (Level III) Students will learn the front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, treading water, the dolphin kick and proper body position for the butterfly, and diving from the side of the pool. Prerequisite: Must have some deep water swimming experience. Student must also be able to independently execute the prone float, back float, crawl stroke, combined back stroke, and swimming on their side. Stroke Improvement (Level IV) Designed to increase endurance by swimming the elementary backstroke, front crawl and back crawl. The breaststroke, sidestroke, basics of turns, and the butterfly will be taught. Prerequisite: Must be able to execute the front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl stroke and elementary backstroke, and butterfly body position and dolphin kick. Stroke Refinement (Level V) Designed to increase endurance and master the crawlstroke, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly. Prerequisite: Students must be able to demonstrate the skills taught in Level IV. Level II will also introduce the student to swimming on their side simultaneously kicking and treading water. For more information call Arlington Echo at 410-222-3822. 6 World & Classical Languages El Campo del Bosque For students entering grades: 1–5 Dates: June 29–July 2 Time: 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. From the moment your passport is stamped entrada (entrance) by the officials at inmigración (immigration), you will find yourself immersed in an exciting world where you will experience Hispanic culture and speak the Spanish language. The goal of El Campo del Bosque is to have learners acquire a beginning pronunciation and vocabulary, be able to make basic exchanges in the language, and develop some appreciation of the Hispanic culture. Through word games, skits, music, art, and outdoor activities, children gain an introduction or enhance their existing Spanish speaking skills while learning about the cultures in which Spanish is spoken. During the course of the 4-day camp, instructors, who represent a combination of both native and non-native speakers, will immerse children in the target language through a non-intimidating yet challenging “Spanish only” environment. Students will experience the structure and sound of the language through the use of phonics, song and writing, as well as upbeat and exciting cultural activities. Children with no Spanish language proficiency as well as the student who wants to improve his or her language skills during the summer are welcome. Students who attended the camp last year will be grouped in classes so that their learning can continue. A student/instructor ratio of 10 :1 will be maintained with each group of 10 children also having a Junior Counselor and at least one Counselor-in-training. The camp will be limited to 60 participants. Children will be grouped primarily by their grade levels. Swimming and canoeing will be offered to students who willingly can swim under the water and have some swimming abilities. These activities will be supervised by certified, English-speaking aquatic instructors at all times. 4. Student Application Form, a Request for Financial Assistance Form (page 15), if applicable, and a $100.00 deposit must be returned by May 15, 2015 (or until capacity is reached). Parents are expected to drop off their children promptly at 8:15 and pick up their children promptly at 3:30. Cost $250.00 ($100.00 deposit, $150.00 to be paid upon acceptance.)
