Bench sitting...sky gazing...
Pinkish hue on water blue...
Cloud a curtain...yet uncertain...
Sun peeking...eyes seeking...
Big orange ball...my God my All...
Water fire...my total Desire...
Shimmering streak...You I seek...
93 million miles...my heart-mind smiles...
Warming earth...giving birth...
Sunny side up to fill my cup...
Breezes blow to also show
The Spirit’s way on this Sunday...
Ground of Being...sitting...seeing...
Birds squawk and caw in utter awe...
Seagulls swirl...their wings awhirl...
The sun...the Son...the day’s begun...
Trinity of Love both here and above...
I pledge to face this day of grace...
The clouds recede...Your glory leads...
The silence shouts...You’re all about...
So seize my soul...it is Your Role...
To capture me and claim me free...
All creation sings elation...
The sun goes higher...a bigger fire...
Earth, air, water...sons and daughters...
Who are we from where You see?
Give us eyes at each sunrise
To know and trust Your gifts to us...
May we embark with gull and lark
To sing Your praise through all our days...
And know deep down the primordial sound
Of God within except for sin...
That woos us to be true to You...
And so I do...with love, your Sue...

As you page through this issue of Roots & Ripples, you will note that we offer
several tried and true programs, but in addition, this fall, we have added many
new programs. We call your attention to the brief bios of new staff and guest
presenters on page 4.
I am very grateful and happy to tell you that our first annual “Spirit of Marywood” golf outing was a wonderful success!!! Huge thanks go to our staff,
operating board, volunteers and behind the scenes prayers. As one of our
Operating Board members said, “This was a great dry run for next year’s 25th
anniversary of Marywood!” Mark your calendars for the 2017 “Spirit of
Marywood” golf outing, Thursday, June 29, at the Trout Lake Golf Club.
Yes, Marywood has been open to/for the public since June of 1992 when the
Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration endorsed the transition of this beautiful, quiet place from internal governance operations to a Spirituality Center.
Who could have known, other than the wisdom of our God, that places such as
Marywood are truly gifts and treasures in a world filled with the chaos of
busyness, and people are in need of a quiet place to get in touch with the holy
in self, others and creation.
This issue covers major holidays from September thru December. With these
celebrations around goodness and gratefulness, and in response to the recent
violence in our country, I offer you two projects or movements that you might
explore and learn more about: The Forgiveness Project (http://theforgivenessproject.com) and the Circle of Compassion (https://circleofcompassion.org).
May you experience our loving God in your heart as you go about your daily
tasks, remembering what St.Teresa of Avila wrote: Christ has no body but
yours…You are His body.

Farewell Joyce ...
Joyce Heil has been sharing her gifts here at Marywood through retreats, programs and outreach since February, 2014. Her singing talents added immeasurably to many gatherings. With mixed emotions we say farewell to Joyce,

her husband, Carl Koch will be able to spend more time traveling. Joyce and
Carl plan to continue living in the area. Thank you, Joyce, from all of us.

Presenter: Julia Walsh FSPA
We’ll discuss samples of nature poetry, study a bit of
technique, be challenged by a writing
prompt and spend
time in nature writing. At the end of
the session we’ll
share our creations
and give each other
feedback. This workshop is appropriate for writers at all levels. Suggested
offering $20.00. Bring a lunch.
SETTLERS AND PILGRIMS
November 10 -Thursday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Dick Bruesehoff
Two of the metaphors used to describe
life are pilgrims and settlers. “I’m but
a stranger here…” or “Bloom where
you’re planted.” These two forms of
faithful living are often pitted against
each other and seen as opposing each
other. Most of us, however, are usually
doing both simultaneously. We’ll explore how we are living faithfully as
both settlers and pilgrims.
Suggested offering $10.00.
HEALING GRATITUDE
November 14-Monday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Pat Pintens
One of our first lessons in gratitude
comes when we, as children, are
taught to say the magic words:
“please” and “thank you.” My most
difficult lesson in gratitude came when
my young nephew died. I discovered
that gratitude isn’t magical, it’s healing. Let’s explore together the healing
power of gratitude. Suggested offering
$10.00.
PRAYER WITHOUT WORDS
November 16 - Wednesday
9:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m.
Presenters: Marla Lang, FSPA
We will explore a way of praying that
goes beyond words. Being attentive to
experiences in our surroundings can lead us
to an awareness of
God’s presence deep
within and among us.
Stilling exercises and
ways of tending to
God’s presence will be
guided. Suggested offering $10.00.
THE SACREDNESS OF FOOD
AND EATING
Session Three:
GOSPEL LIVING
November 17 - Thursday
3:00-6:30 p.m.
Presenter: Julia Walsh, FSPA
During the harvest season, we’ll pause
and embrace the sacredness of food in
community. This will include Biblical
input centered on the themes of transformation, sustainability and Gospel
living, in order to gain more mindfulness about how to be in right relationship with food, Earth and others. Our
time will close with prayerfully cooking and consuming a meal together.
Suggested offering. Register by Friday, November 11.
Programs - December 2016
THE GIFT OF YEARS
December 1 - Thursday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Marla Lang, FSPA
As we begin the Advent Season, not
only people facing aging but everyone
may find themselves desiring to live a
more spiritually centered and balanced
life. We will examine some of Joan
Chittister’s reflections on living into
the values offered every day, about
growing older with grace. . . the struggles, temptations and surprises, the potential and joys. Suggested offering
$10.00.
PRAY AS YOU CAN – NOT AS
YOU CAN’T
December 6 - Tuesday
9:30-11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Dick Bruesehoff
Prayer can take an infinite number of
forms! Some forms come easily, while
others can be very challenging. Using
Myers-Briggs personality types, we
will explore why some forms may be
easier for you than others. We’ll practice a variety of prayer forms together
and encourage you to identify and
claim the ways you can pray! Suggested offering $10.00.
ADVENT: WHEN GOD
INTERRUPTS OUR LIVES
December 7 – Wednesday
9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Presenter: Pat Pintens
Our lives are filled with interruptions.
Some we welcome some we can do
without. Have you ever thought of the
ANNUNCIATION as an interruption?
What was Mary doing when Gabriel
knocked on her door? Let’s explore the
annunciation story to discover some of
the graces that interruptions can bring
into our lives-even when we’re busy
getting ready for Christmas. Bring a
lunch. Suggested offering $15.00.
May Peace
be your Gift this Christmas
and your Blessing
all the years that follow!

Like trees we can trust
by Julia Walsh, FSPA
The wonders of nature suggest how things could work for us
in our spiritual lives, in our world.
Since spring, many trees have been laboring to produce
large, varied leaves. The growth, nourishment, and protection
provided by the leaves helped trees live with health and strength.
With the arrival of the season of autumn, the trees demonstrate how we could humbly
let go and be freed of our attachments. As the trees drop bright and colorful leaves to earth,
they enrich soil and gain groundedness. While trees are stripped they gain the strength of
transformation. As trees surrender to God’s designs, they remind us that
God is in control; that we can trust.
Even in the chaos of political division, we can trust in God with the calm surrender that the
trees model. As we do, we will grow toward new heights with great freedom and joy.
