Curtis Receives Honorary Doctorate from Alma Mater,
MacMurray College
Deborah Curtis, Warrensburg, provost and chief learning officer at the University of Central
Missouri, received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from her alma mater,
MacMurray College, Edwardsville, Ill., during spring commencement ceremonies Saturday,
May 9. Curtis was selected for the honor in recognition of her successes in enriching the experiences of countless students and teachers during her nearly 40-year career in education.
“I am truly humbled by this recognition.” Curtis said. “MacMurray College was an important
foundational part of my higher education experience. I am honored to have had the opportunity to speak to their graduates and share a bit of what this means to me.”
Dr. Deborah Curtis
Curtis received a bachelor’s degree in music education from MacMurray in 1972 and embarked on a career in education as a classroom teacher, coach, professor, dean and provost
in secondary and higher education in Illinois and Missouri. She received a master’s degree in
music education from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. degree in curriculum and instruction from Indiana State University in 1986. Following a career as a music educator and coach
in public schools in Illinois and Indiana, she joined the faculty of the College of Education at
Illinois State University in 1986. After rising through the academic ranks to professor, she was
named director of clinical experiences and certification processes in the Teacher Education
Center in 2001 and dean of the College of Education in 2006.
Curtis was named provost and chief learning officer at UCM in 2012 following a nationwide search. She is responsible for
academic programs and support services including the four academic colleges, the James C. Kirkpatrick Library, The Honors College, Graduate and Extended Studies, Enrollment Management, Student Experience and Engagement, Technology
Services, and Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment. She leads and manages strategic planning, resource allocation
and fiscal affairs for academic affairs and serves on the Strategic Leadership Team. Curtis and her husband, Lynn, a retired
education administrator and coach, are residents of Warrensburg.
Wegener Named UCM Student Employee of the Year
Carl Wegener, a senior aviation major from Harrisburg, recently was named Student Employee of the Year at the University of Central Missouri. Wegener received the award during a reception in celebration of National Student Employment
Week. Wegener was one of 19 UCM students nominated by faculty, staff and administrators for the honor. He is employed in aviation maintenance at Max B. Swisher Skyhaven Airport, the university-owned airport that also serves Warrensburg and the Johnson County, Missouri area. He has been employed at the airport
since April 2014.
In his position Wegener assist with supervised aircraft maintenance activities, including
tire and engine maintenance, washing aircraft, running engines and taxiing aircraft. He
helped design standardized work stations that ensure mechanics have all necessary
tools and materials within reach, and he is recognized as one of the top welders in the
shop.
Wegener is also a member of the UCM Flight Team. As such, he has volunteered his
time to create defects in aircraft that must be found by aviation students during preflight inspections, improving skills that have helped the flight team succeed in competition.
“I have spent many years in the industry, and I know Carl will be highly successful in his
chosen field,” said Stephen Quick, director of aircraft maintenance at Max B. Swisher
Skyhaven Airport, in his nomination of Wegener. “His work ethic is evident in the quality of his work, and he has earned the highest trust and respect from the certificated
mechanics. Wegener is the son of Les and Colleen Wegener of Harrisburg and a graduate of Hickman High School, Columbia.
