GREETINGS FROM THE DESK OF: REED F. (CADILLAC) JOHNSON
This month was to be a great month for our Remote School Projects however everything was canceled for September due to
two deaths.
In the past 11 months we have lost three of our biggest supporters. First was ED MORAN who lost his fight with cancer. Ed
and his wife Lucy raised $5,000.00 for WOUNDED WARRIOR CRUISE IV.
Next in December 2012, after a visit to the Kingdom, ROB ENGLISH died on a dive trip in Micronesia. Rob was a member
of the 46th board. He was and his wife Edie still is a big supporter of our Remote Schools and Wounded Warrior programs.
On September 13th we were notified that JAMES HANDLIN had died at his home in Udorn from a heart attack. James was a
big supporter of both our major projects and a good friend. He was one of the first members of the association. He had served
his country his whole life both in the military and as a government civilian.
His service was held in Udorn on the 18th and Pranee and I attended meeting two of his sons SEAN & JIMMY. Pui, Jim's
wife was a rock and took care of us and we greatly appreciate everything she did for us while we were there.
On September 19th Mike & Chase Johnson from Baton Rouge LA., arrived in the Kingdom bearing gifts, they brought 150lbs
of school supplies with them.
We took them both to the big lake by the gold Buddha so Mike could release 71 fish, turtles, snails and a frog (one creature
for each year) for his Buddhist birthday tradition. Later we visited the elephants and the 106 meter high Gold Buddha.
Early in the morning of September 20th Pranee was notified that her father had passed away. Pranee and our daughter Eye left
for Satuck in NE Thailand to be with their family. At this time we canceled the school visits for the month but we will visit
Buri Ram when I return from the USA.

Jim Handlin’s funeral service was held in Udorn. Pranee and I attended. We met two of his sons SEAN & JIMMY.
Pui, Jim's wife was a rock and took care of us and we greatly appreciate everything she did for us while we were there.
The local VFW Post, SFA CH III (Bangkok) President and other officers and also members of the 46THSFCA attended.
A ceremony for Jim was held later in the day on the Mekong River.

Mike & Chase Johnson from Baton Rouge LA. arrived in Thailand. Mike was celebrating his 71st Birthday. We went to the
big lake by the gold Buddha so Mike could release 71 fish, turtles, snails and a frog (one creature for each year).

Buddha.

At our Annual Retiree Appreciation Day at Nellis AFB on September 14th, there were a lot of questions concerning the new
health care act and Tricare. This bulletin may have a few facts for you. When a Tricare region changes contracts, you may
lose a bit. In the Western Region, United Healthcare has cut back services a little since they took over this FY. Page 5 has an
item on preparing for a disaster and Page 8 has info on supplemental health care insurance and that TCL eligibles may have to
pay more at the VA facilities.
Our Retiree Day had 945 people sign in and that indicates there were probably over 1000 there as some will just not sign in.
Veterans Organizations that were present signed up a fair number of new members. The 99th Medical Group personnel
conducting exams from the Nellis Medical Center found several retirees that were in need of follow up medical care. If your
area has one of these retiree days, it might be worthwhile to attend one. This was my 26th as a volunteer at various
installations and I have always found that many retirees discover something new. It is rewarding to assist Retirees through an
RAO as a volunteer as well. Lou

There is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy.25 in rural Iowa. For generations, Kids have painted slogans, names, and
Obscenities on this rock, changing its Character many times.
A few months back, the rock received its Latest paint job, and since then it has been Left completely undisturbed. It's quite an
impressive sight. I thought the flag was draped over the rock, But it's not. It's actually painted on the rock too.

SFC Randy Shughart
New memorial dedicated to Medal of Honor recipient SFC Randy Shughart. A more visible memorial
marks the 20th anniversary of Shughart’s heroic actions. A small grave marker is a silent but oftenoverlooked sentinel at the gravesite of a quiet hero in Carlisle. A Special Forces ‘quiet professional’
honored by the nation with the Medal of Honor, Sgt. First Class Randall ‘Randy’ Shughart may not have
asked for more. But former friends, professional colleagues and members of the Special Forces community
believe that this hometown hero deserves better. The Special Forces Association (SFA) Chapter 64 has
sponsored an effort to replace the current marker with a more visible and meaningful memorial for Shughart
Oct. 3. The SFA’s new memorial design includes a granite slab with the Medal of Honor citation engraved upon it, and a
distinctive granite bench bearing a Shughart family quote.
Thursday, Oct. 3, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. at Westminster Cemetery in Carlisle, a special ceremony dedicates the new cemetery
marker created to recognize the courage, dedication and sacrifice of Shughart on the 20th anniversary of the Battle of
Mogadishu.
The memorial commemoration includes several elements. Army Col. Matt Dawson, director of the U.S. Army Heritage and
Education Center gives a short historical review of U.S. actions in Somalia 20 years ago. Maj. Gen. Tony Cucolo, U.S. Army
War College Commandant, offers his thoughts about Shughart, his actions under fire, and the ageless significance of his
bravery to soldiers today and tomorrow. About 30 members of the extended Shughart Family plan to attend the event.
Veterans groups have been invited to present wreaths. Open to the public, the ceremony takes place rain or shine at
Westminster Cemetery at 1159 Newville Road in Carlisle.
A reception with light refreshments follows the dedication nearby at the West Pennsboro Fire Department at 20 Park Rd.,
Plainfield. The ceremony is sponsored by the Special Forces Association, the U.S. Army War College, the West Pennsboro
Fire Department and Veterans Groups. In support of the SFC Shughart commemoration, Boy Scout Troop & Pack 173 will
post U.S. flags at more than 400 Veterans’ gravesite within the cemetery. More click here: The Valley Times Star - New

Just to keep you updated on our activities, some exciting developments have taken place regarding our Old Timers’ HALO
Reunion. We continue to receive requests to attend the activities from around the world and the support elements are coming on
line.
LTC Steve Basilici: Commander of 2nd Bn 1st SWTG(A) and B CO SGM Bill Montrose (HALO School at Yuma) are now
involved. They will bring in the Chief Instructor from the HALO School in Yuma, Mr. Jose Reyes and Chief Rigger Jerry
Fletcher, as well as the entire command element for the weekend. They will present the HALO wings on Friday and on Saturday
brief us on the current training techniques, programs and wind tunnel construction at YUMA and the advanced equipment and
training used by the ODAs today.
Col Joe Kittinger (USAF), World Record High Altitude Jump holder and consultant to Red Bull’s latest World Record High
Altitude Jump, is planning to attend Saturday-Monday.
Bob Walters: 22nd British SAS, will give us a short presentation on how he and his team conducted the first crossing of the
English Channel using HAHO techniques.
Cliff Newman (Laos), Bob Castillo (Vietnam), Billy Waugh and Team (Vietnam), will brief us on how their Combat HALO
insertions/missions went down and the lessons they learned. These briefs are confirmed. Melvin Hill has now confirmed
attendance.
Mark King (retired 1st and 5th group) who works Military Freefall projects for Wiser Company is providing their new hands on,
interactive HALO canopy control simulators for all of us to experience throughout the day Friday and Saturday. He will brief us
on the state of HALO today including a PPS presentation from the 1/10 HALO team that infiltrated Afghanistan using a freefall
bundle. He will be presenting HALO coins to the original team & MTT members in recognition of their accomplishments.
10th Special Forces Group CSM Jason M. Krider and Maj Aram M. Donigian !0th Group PAO at Fort Carson have been
contacted and invited to participate. They have promised to have representation present.
CSM Joe Dennison (retired 5th Group CSM) is the Oktoberfest POC. It will be held at the Special Forces Association
Headquarters Team House just up the road from the hotel. The Oktoberfest is always a very popular picnic for the ‘Fort Bragg
SF crowd’ and our reunion participation will have a special draw. Last year’s cost was $15.00/head with food and drink
provided. We will update with current cost when we get it.
Sunday’s noon time tour of the Airborne and Special Operations Museum is locked in with a special viewing of the movie they
have for visitors. There will be subject matter experts (hahaha) on hand to insure a super visit.
Monday morning, 0900-1030, we have an appointment to tour the US Army Parachute Team, Golden Knights Facilities and
Trophy Room. After our visit there we will move to the Dick Meadows Memorial Statue at the Special Forces Hq to pay our
respects. Monday’s activities are a late add on and not open to the general public. To participate contact me asap.
Billy Cason and 46th SF Company Association will have a display table Friday and Saturday with information and items for
sale to support their efforts in helping the remote schools in Thailand.
Joe Thigpin (Fayetteville Budweiser Distributor) will provide FREE BEER for the Friday night presentations! Thank you Bill
Yeider for bringing Joe on board.
As you can see the weekend is shaping up to be one heck of an event. We are all very excited to be able to see everyone again
and to share some memories of days past while we catch up on where we’re at today. There is still time for special requests,
ideas and suggestions but you must get them in to us asap.

representation present. CSM Joe Dennison (retired 5th Grp CSM) is the Oktoberfest POC. It will be held at the SFA Hdqtrs
teamhouse just up the road from the hotel. The Oktoberfest is always a popular picnic for the Ft. Bragg SF crowd and our
reunion participation will have a special draw. Last year's cost was $15.00/head with food and drink provided. Sunday's noon
time tour of the Airborne and Special Operations Museum is locked in with a special viewing of the movie they have for
visitors. There will be subject matter (experts) on hand to insure a super visit. Monday morning 0900 to 1030, we have an
appointment to tour the US Army Parachute Team, Golden Knights Facilities and Trophy room. After our visit there we will
move to the Dick Meadows Memorial Statue at the SF Hq to pay our respects. Monday's activities are a late add on and not open

46th SF Company will have a display table on Friday and Saturday with information and items for sale to support their efforts in
helping schools in Thailand. Joe Thigpin (Fayetteville Budweiser Distributor) will have FREE BEER for the Friday night
presentations. Jimbo arranged the guys from the first 10th grp HALO training in Zaragoza Spain and Greece to have a reunion.
Some of these guys have not seen each other in 40 years. Jimbo also worked hard to get "Big Army" to award HALO wings and
W-8 identifiers to the group. It was a nightmare he says. Dale Sungy, a team leader in 1968, took on the task of not only finding
everyone but having them provide any and all documents that they had to support the issue of HALO wings. The best response
they initially got from the SF community and Big Army G-1 was "We don't do that anymore". Dale Sungy said bullshit and in
traditional SF fashion, moved it up to the General Officer Level. Long story short, he might have pulled of a major miracle. Not
only is there a good chance that the guys will get their wings awarded but he's also close to getting the Combat Star awarded to
those who made HALO infils. This is a huge accomplishment. We are asking everyone who can make it to come to the Holiday
Inn Bordeau in Fayetteville on FRIDAY 4 OCT AT 1900 HRS TO TAKE PART IN THE WINGS PRESENTATION FOR
THESE DESERVING FINE (not so young) MEN. THIS MAY BE THE LAST TIME ALL THESE SF LEGENDS WILL BE
IN ONE PLACE AGAIN. Gentlemen, Jimbo Blakeslee did a hell of a thing here in getting this put together. His father (RIP)
was on the original HALO team and never received his wings. Jimbo decided that wasn't right and is getting these men

SCHOOLS FUND RAISING DRIVES
We need to raise more funds for our schools programs. The children want to learn and the teachers want to teach. But these schools
have to get by on so little money. We can help them. The teachers make about $150 a month and the state funding for each child is
about $10 a year!!
Playtime for some of the Remote school children is working in the school market gardens, so come lunchtime they get something to
eat. If the crops are good the surplus gets sold at the local market. The little money made goes to buy fish and meat for their
lunches.
State school funding does not include feeding the kids!!

NEW PROGRAM; Shoes, socks and winter clothes for the children in the Northern Mountain Schools
This is a new Program in addition to our Blanket Program, School Supplies Program, Bikes for Tykes Program and Field Trips Program.
You all know that 100% of what EVER you donate goes to what YOU tell us you want it to go for. All the money donated or we make from the
sales in our store goes to our Programs. We have no Admin costs because all our Officers are Volunteers.
School Lunch Programs
We provide funds and supplies for fish and frog farms and School market gardens. Got green fingers? Want to help? With the combination of
sun, rain and elephant dung, stuff really GROWS.
Our new project in Buri Ram Province is to test a new fertilizer provided by JAMES HANDLIN for growing rice and my father in-law has
donated a 1/2 an acre to test the new product. The rice will be given to the schools we support in the province.

Our Warm Blanket and later Shoes & Socks and Jacket Programs started
with this little boy who died in the winter of 2004. His name was Moc
(which means fog in English). He attended Kun Sab School in the Hills
near Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand.
Most visitors to Thailand find the Northern Hills refreshingly cool after the
tropical southern beaches but the people who live there especially small
children find the winter nights are COLD. He died from caching a CHILL
because he got too cold in the night.
News of his death kicked off our WARM BLANKET PROGRAM.
Since 2004 we have donated 4,380 BLANKETS to the poor and remote
school children in Thailand. When we have enough donations we buy
100’s of Blankets at a time. They cost just $5 each!!
We started our BIKES FOR TYKES PROGRAM when we met this 12 year old 0rphan boy
who was making a living as a pro kick boxer to support his grandmother & himself.
His Teacher told us he had good grades but had a problem getting to and from School
because his home was a long way and he had no money for the bus.
Since 2004 we have donated over 300 Bikes to deserving children.
When we have enough donations we buy the BIKES by the truckload. They cost just $40
each!!
