“Following Jesus - Loving With Christ - Together”
DISCIPLES TO DISCIPLES
Dear Colleagues in Christ,
Is that a little too formal a salutation? It isn’t meant to be. You and
I may enjoy no previous personal relationship, yet, we already are
and will be colleagues and co-workers in the commission that Jesus
gave to his first followers and to all who have followed to this date.

BILL ROSE-HEIM
REGIONAL MINISTER
AND PRESIDENT
This is a time of huge global, social and technological change. The
Church now faces a time not unlike the period just before the Protestant Reformation
even had a name. Congregations, Regions and denominations like ours are challenged
to engage in sustainable mission and ministry without the familiar supports to which we
grew accustomed when church participation was double (or more) what it is today. Even
so, this is a time of great opportunity and hope.
At last, more of us in the Church are committing to more honest, sacred conversations
about race with the intent of changing attitudes shaped more by insidious mythology
and ignorance than by reality and experience. We are challenging one another to make
more changes to the structures and practices that protect the privilege and power of
some to the abuse and neglect of others. As we do this and other mission work that
takes us out of our comfort, certainty and control and into deeper engagement within
our communities, we get to revisit and model the Gospel, to practice and proclaim life as
God intended, and to join with the Holy Spirit to inspire new generations of life-long
students and followers of Jesus Christ. We may enjoy more often the “fruits of the
spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23)
I look forward to serving, worshiping, and growing more faithful and effective with you
in the cause of Christ, grateful for our wonderfully diverse and multi-cultural Greater
Kansas City Region, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Church universal
for inviting us all to live, walk and work with Jesus in our shared “movement for
wholeness.”

PULPIT AND PEW
I’m sure you’ve noticed how Greek words are part of church life from time to time.
Reluctantly or willingly, most churchgoers learn terms like koinonia (fellowship),
agape (supreme love), or Eucharist (literally “thanksgiving,” although most often
used for Communion). Apparently going to church means acquiring a new
vocabulary.
MIKE GRAVES
REGIONAL MINISTER OF PREACHING
So here are three you might not have encountered: ethos, logos, and pathos. These
are not so much from the Greek New Testament (although they are used) as from
Aristotle who was writing about modes of persuasion between speaker and listener.
A few years back Ron Allen who teaches preaching and New Testament at Christian
Theological Seminary wrote a wonderful little book about these three terms,
Hearing the Sermon (Chalice, 2004). His subtitle translates these three Greek words:
relationship, content, and feeling.
In other words, preachers and listeners enter into three distinct relationships during the sermon. The latter
two, content and feeling, focus more on what is said. Allen’s research shows that while all of us desire both,
we are each wired so as to respond better to a sermon’s teaching (logos) or its stories (pathos). In other
words, responding to the very same sermon, one person is affected by the heady stuff, the next by appeals
to the heart. Clear enough.
But it’s that first mode, ethos, that is often misunderstood. It’s tricky in part because this is not the same
word we typically use to describe “the spirit of a culture” or some such thing. That would be ethos with a long
“e.” This is a short “e” in Greek or a long “a,” maybe better pronounced “athos.” Allen translates it as
relationship, the relationship formed between preacher and parishioner.
The other reason it’s misunderstood is because some preachers mistakenly believe relationship in preaching
is only achieved via personal stories, and thus the overwhelming use of autobiography these days in
churches. I like personal stories, but this seems to be getting out of hand. Properly understood, ethos
happens regardless of personal stories. People listening to a preacher make judgments about the
trustworthiness of that preacher even when no personal stories are shared. These judgments are completely
subjective, although some studies suggest most of us are pretty good at judging trustworthiness.
All of which leads me to how I typically explain ethos to my students. I call it the “used car salesman test.”
Would you buy a used car from that person? Think about it, we’ve all been on those lots when the person
coming out to greet us either works for us or turns us off. That’s ethos in a nutshell. I remember being in
chapel with my good friend David May, listening to a well-known preacher here in Kansas City, but one who
has always set off my ethos alarm. David had never heard this preacher, so mid-sermon I turned to him and
asked, “Would you buy a used car from him?” David shook his head no. No way.
For those of you who listen to sermons, it’s a good question to ask regarding the one up front speaking
gospel. For those of us who preach sermons, we should probably ponder what it is we are “selling” and how
we feel about it.

BI-MONTHLY PUBLICATION PACKET
We have enjoyed the information and publications from our regional bi-monthly mailing packet for a number
of years. The wealth of activity and information from our General Church, our Regional Church, and our
local congregations and clergy has long been shared with our readers via this packet of information. With
much discernment, the same information you read and seek is now published in the GKC
E-CONNECT (emailed out on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month), and our continued publication of
the "Disciples to Disciples" E-NEWS. We want to be better stewards of your generous gifts, and of our
environment. Thank you for your understanding as we proceed with new vision for our sharing of
information and publications.
So, have you signed up to receive the E-CONNECT or E-NEWS by email? Contact your GKC Regional Office.

ACADEMY FOR SPIRITUAL FORMATION®
Beginning on August 9, 2016, The Academy for Spiritual Formation® will offer its 38th two-year program to
all who hunger for a deeper spiritual experience of the Christian faith. Participants from many denominations will gather at the spacious and prayerful Benedictine Center near Schuyler, Nebraska. Schuyler is located
northwest of Omaha, about a four hour drive from Kansas City. The Academy has never been offered this
close to Kansas City before.
Worship, silence, reflection, covenant groups -- all lead deeper and deeper into the struggles and joys of communal life. We begin as individuals, seeking to find a place for our own soul's journey. Along the way, we discover there are other pilgrims who share our longing. For more information about Academy #38, Contact

“EL CIEGO DE NACIMIENTO” (Rev. Medardo Morales, 1937-2015)
