Outback Queensland
Outback Queensland Nothing beats Outback Queensland. Rich with the tales and trappings of yesteryear, awe-inspiring landscapes and fair dinkum friendly locals, it’s a ‘big country’ waiting to be explored. Welcome to Outback Queensland Vast, rugged, unspoilt – these are just a few words that come to mind when trying to define Queensland’s diverse Outback region. Wetlands and waterholes, red desert sand dunes, lush savannah and cattle stations are a sample of what’s to see on your journey throughout Queensland’s heart. If you’re fascinated by dinosaurs, the Lake Quarry Dinosaur Trackways near Winton are the only preserved evidence of a dinosaur stampede on the planet. Furthermore, the Riversleigh Fossil Field within Lawn Hill Gorge National Park (north west of Mount Isa) enables visitors to try their hand at finding their own fossil. If you wish not to get your hands dirty, then the Riversleigh Fossil Centre in Mount Isa is the place to go. For a quintessential outback racing experience, the Birdsville Races are the Outback’s most famous, attracting crowds of up to 6,000 every year. Expect dirt, dust and a good time! Four wheel driving enthusiasts will love the Simpson Desert – the state’s biggest national park. Covering more than a million hectares, it is dominated by sand dunes up to 20 metres high and one kilometre apart. 2 Those interested in a long driving holiday may like to consider driving the Matilda Highway. This stretch of road is a great way to see some of what the Outback has to offer from the comfort of your vehicle. Passing the towns of Cunnamulla, Charleville, Blackall, Barcaldine, Longreach and Winton, there are some great attractions to see along the way! A trip to the Outback is not complete without experiencing a traditional Aussie rodeo. Mt Isa, the rodeo capital of Australia, is the place to go. The annual Mt Isa Rotary Rodeo is a must see, attracting more than 25,000 visitors! Another great thing about the Outback is that it’s one of the best places in the country to stargaze. Without the illumination of city lights, you will see countless twinkling stars. Check out the Charleville Cosmos Centre and Observatory – experienced guides will take you on a journey through the Cosmos. Whatever it is that’s on your itinerary, the Outback offers many unique experiences that will leave you with fond memories to last a lifetime. 3 Editor’s Pick Near Burketown, a natural phenomenon known as the ‘Morning Glory Cloud’ will rival any sky show you’ve seen. Appearing in spring, the rolling barrel of cloud can exceed 1000kms in length and 2kms in height. Photo Opportunity Close to Mt Surprise lies an underground labyrinth called the Undara Lava Caves. The caves stretch 160kms across the Gulf Savannah plains and were formed by a volcanic eruption some 190,000 years ago. Guided tours are available which follow the path of the former lava river. 4 Things to See and Do Qantas Founders Museum, Longreach The Qantas Founders Museum celebrates the airline’s growth from its inception to the present day.
