than account for not seeing Bruno Mars live.
Parting the heavy curtains
hanging in the entryway at
Bounce Sporting Club
reveal a massive, woodwalled room full of leather
banqueted booths against
one wall, a long back-lit bar
against the other, and plenty
of standing room in between.
It’s a good thing, because
this place gets crowded with
pretty party people, which
have, in the past, included
Leonardo DiCaprio, Marc
Anthony and Jonah Hill.
Although the sports bar
usually serves as an afterwork playground for Flatiron
professionals, it outdid itself
for last year’s Super Bowl,
transforming into a NOLA
wonderland complete with
men on stilts handing out
beads, in honor of the game’s
locale. The special themed
entertainment for this year
is still under wraps, but the
usual fare of gastronomic
wonders is no secret –

bites, lobster roll sliders,

some craft beers, and when the DJ starts to play
during commercial breaks, you’ll see that this place
was named for a reason. (21st St. nr. 6th Ave.)
SUPER BOWL SUNDAY,
It’s all smoke and mirrors at the 40/40 Club, coowned by Jay-Z and Juan Perez. Named after the
baseball term for an achievement only accomplished
by four players in history – hitting 40 home runs and
stealing 40 bases in a single season – the 40/40 is elite
in every sense, if you’re in the mood for a seen-andbe-seen Super Bowl experience. Having undergone
a $10 million renovation in 2011, the posh club now
looks and feels like an exclusive penthouse (would
you expect anything less from the music industry
titan?). If its name indicates anything, the 40/40 is

champagne – Jay-Z’s favorite. The food is more lowkey, with signature sliders, southern fried chicken
and platters of mini desserts. Don’t be surprised to
see regulars Warren Buffett and Alex Rodriguez
trotting around the second-level catwalk. (25th St.
at Broadway)
Opened in 2012, The Royal is the sports-minded
brainchild of a group of
nightlife-savvy
owners,
including Stafford Schlitt,
who directs SoHo clubs
Greenhouse and W.i.P. This
sports bar is similarly luxe
with leather banquettes, 43
LED screens and bouncers
in front to keep the crowd
in check. Daniel Parilla,
The Royal
executive sous chef at
Minetta Tavern, designed
the menu, which offers a
range of dishes from handtwisted pretzels to tuna tacos
to breakfast sandwiches
served all night. Bottle
service is de rigueur at
the tables, which require
a $250 minimum. But the
Windsor Gansevoort Park
bar is plenty big otherwise,
if you prefer to sip on house
cocktails (or buckets of beer)
while you dance to beats
spun by a world famous DJ –
also a norm for the big game.
(4th Ave. at 13th St.)
If fears of claustrophobia
haunt your visions of a bar

on game day, the Windsor
Gansevoort Park is a bar
after your own heart. The smart-casual drinking
establishment has a decidedly European feel,
complete with pin stripe clothed walls hung with
black and white photographs. Book ahead here,
as Super Bowl guests require either an invitation
or a reservation. Table minimums won’t appeal to
the frugal, but some might say that the luxury of

and Kobe Bryant give a good reason to get up and
stretch your legs. (Park Ave. at 29th St.)

from beat to punk
...Capturing the excitement of NYC! Shoppping, Restaurants, Concerts & Events
M
useums outdo themselves this month with
thrilling exhibits from beat artists, modernist
photographers and fashion icons.
Start your art appreciation tour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 Fifth Ave.)
for the much anticipated ”PUNK: Chaos and
Couture” exhibit. Featuring approximately
100 designs, including original punk garments
this exhibit examines the parallels between
the “do it yourself” punk spirit and the customization of couture fashion. In addition to
materials, techniques, and embellishments,
the collection will include period music videos
and audio. Don’t miss the CBGB themed gallery and standout pieces by Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen.
May musuem exhibits soak up some of the
most influential artists, in all media.
Continue your celebration of fashion at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 Fifth
Ave.) with their other exhibit “Impressionism,
Fashion and Modernity”. Reaching further
back than mid-70s punk, this exhibit explores
the role of fashion in works by great Impressionists like Manet, Monet and Renoir. Figure
paintings pair with period costumes, accessories, photos and prints, thus illustrating a
landscape of influence from mid-1860s to mid1880s.
To feel the pulse of the Beat artist movement, visit the Whitney Museum (945 Madison Ave.) for the “Jay DeFoe: a Retrospective”
exhibit. DeFoe was one of the most celebrated
Beat artists in San Francisco and her work
spans four decades and a range of styles. The
full breadth of her work will be exhibited, with
over 130 pieces on display; from drawings and
collage to paintings and jewelry, her work
shows courage, creativity and painstaking
process.
Nearby at the Museum of Modern Art
(11 W. 53rd St.) the “Bill Brandt: Shadow
& Light” exhibit is a must-see this May, with
select works from one of the pioneers of modernist photography. Offering a riveting look at
mid-20th century life in England, Brandt excels at capturing everyday moments in a way
that makes them exciting and even strange.
Don’t miss his collection of nudes from 19451961.
As visionaries across all media, these artists make museum-hopping in May a must.
For fashion forward thinking, Beat spirit and
groundbreaking photography...go, see and be
amazed.

NEW YORK TIMES - JUNE 4, 2012

"Even in the wake of a recession,
Manhattan is reaping the benefits of
tourists happily forfeiting their cash for
the experience of shopping in the city
that never sleeps."
"Tourists are spearheading a retail
spending surge in Manhattan, with $52.4
billion expected to pour into the cash
registers of clothing, electornics shops and
other outlets by the end of 2012"
"retail sales have increased by a
whopping 42% from 2007 and an
estimated $52.4 billion is expected

making this decade the strongest for
retail spending growth since the middle
of the 20th century."
"A record 50.2 million people visited New

why New York City is doing better than the

- Ash / Manager, New York Guest / NY, NY
“Of all the guides and info mags I have picked up over the years yours is by far the best. No contest. I’m wondering if
I can get on a mailing list to receive each issue, so that I am already prepared when I come to the city. Maybe you
don’t distribute individually, but if you do, count me in.”
- Glenn / Reader / Visiting NYC
“Dear Mr. Spears,
I am writing to express my enjoyment of reading ‘New York Monthly’. When I used to travel on business often to New
York City, it was my only guide to what was happening in the city.
...it is still my first choice when looking for ‘what to do’. I enjoy every page and read all the advertisments. I love it!”
- Brenda / Reader / Richmond, VA
“I wanted to see if maybe we can get a box or two here at the Residence Inn Times Square hotel since we have no
more. Guests seem to love them over here.”

all of NY has to offer. We currently showcase the magazine “Hamptons, Vanity Fair, New York, The New Yorker”.
Please let us know we'd like to start putting NYC Monthly in our fleet asap."
