In another sign of progress, the two diplomats told The Associated Press that negotiators at the December round of nuclear talks drew up ϐ ing areas of potential accord and differing approaches to remaining disputes. The diplomats said differences still dominate ahead of the next round of Iran-six power talks on January 15 in Geneva. But they suggested that even agreement to create a to-do list would ϐ cause of wide gaps between the sides. The diplomats, who are familiar with the talks, spoke to the AP recently and demanded anonymity because they weren’t authorized to comment on the closed negotiations. On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh ϐ mula had been reached. In seeking to reduce Iran’s bomb- making ability, the US has proposed that Tehran export much of its stockpile of enriched uranium — something the Islamic Republic has long said it would not do. The diplomats said both sides in the talks are still arguing about how much of an enriched uranium stockpile to leave Iran. It now has enough for several bombs, and Washington wants substantial cuts below that level. And more tests are forecast for the year ahead. A dramatic year for Asia’s democracies began inauspiciously. On January 5, Bangladesh’s ruling party won elections that were boycotted by the opposition and beset by violence that killed more than 100. Meanwhile, Thailand found itself politically paralysed, with daily anti-government protests choking the capital Bangkok. In May, the army stepped in, as it had about a dozen times in the country’s modern history. Coup leader and now Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha would guide the country, he said in a much-debated phrase, towards a “Thai-style democracy.” “Thai-style democracy emphasizes traditional institutions and values rather than the rights and expectations of an awakening electorate,” said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, the director of the Institute for Securities and International Studies. Indeed, the path back to democracy in Thailand has been getting longer, with the ϐ Ǧ Ȅ 2015 — now likely to be pushed back to 2016. There was more gloom for pro-democracy groups in neighbouring Myanmar, as the authorities in November shut the door on changing the country’s military-drafted constitution anytime soon. The constitution is “unfair, unjust and undemocratic,” insisted opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, with visiting US President Barack Obama at her side. Days after Obama’s departure, changes ahead of elections in 2015 were ruled out. There will still be a referendum on the charter and the “political bargaining” over constitutional change will continue in a “crucial” 2015, said political analyst Myo Yan Naung Thein. By the middle of the year, Asia’s electoral disappointments — including a deeply ϐȄ tators talking about “democracy in retreat” in the region. In fact the biggest success stories were in Asia’s two largest democracies: India and Indonesia. Does this presage anything for further tests of democracy in 2015? smoothly, albeit entirely predictably. The Liberal Democratic Party — in power for 65 of the last 69 years — won yet another mandate in December, even as turnout fell to a post-war low of 52.66 per cent and the poll became the butt of media jokes. “Electoral dysfunction leaves Japan’s voters feeling impotent,” as one commentator put it in The Japan Times. Japan isn’t the only Asian nation that seems to lack what is a keystone of democracy in Europe, the United States and else- where: a credible opposition to take the government to task. Lee Kwan Yew’s People’s Action Party has led Singapore since 1965. In Malaysia, Prime Minister Najib Razak’s United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has been the dominant force since independence in 1957. Few would gamble on major political change in these three countries in the coming year — but that may not be a bad thing, argues public policy Professor Lok-sang Ho at Hong Kong’s Lingnan University. “Having different parties and elections may not be essential,” he says. “The spirit of democracy is that the government must be responsive to people’s needs and effective in ϐǤ “This could be an Asian Style Democracy,” he suggested. Ho was one of the opponents of studentled protests in Hong Kong in the second half of the year, where the debate over the limits of democracy reached perhaps its highest pitch. Indicating the tone of the Tories’ message for the general election in May, the poster shows a computer-gener ϐǡ with the slogan “Let’s Stay on the Road to a Stronger Economy”. It lists the government’s achievements since it came to power in 2010 and claims there are “1.75 million more people in work”, “760,000 more businesses” and Dzϐ ȋȌdzǤ Cameron has been criticised over the last claim, as ϐ centage of GDP. In cash terms, it has been reduced by about a third. Unveiling the poster, Cameron said the vote was “the most important election in a generation”, and insisted that only his centre-right party could deliver a stronger economy. But the image, which will appear on billboards across Britain, was swiftly denounced as a “road to hell” by the Tories’ junior coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats. Highlighting one independent assessment that Tory plans would take public spending to the lowest level in 80 years, a Lib Dem spokesman said: “The Conservative economic plan for the future looks more like the highway to hell for the majority of British voters.” Ed Balls, economic spokesman for the main opposition Labour party, said: “It’s a road lurching to the right — their plan is not working, yet they’re saying let’s carry on with our failed plan.” While Labour is slightly ahead of the Conservatives in opinion polls, it is likely that neither party will be able to win a parliamentary majority. If that is the case, they would need the support of a smaller party to govern in a coalition, as occurred in 2010 when the Lib Dems joined with the Conservatives. But the coalition is breaking apart, Lib Dem support has collapsed and the rise of the UK Independence Party ȋȌ Ȅ tion wide open. — AFP European Union ϐ tactics by migrant smugglers BRUSSELS — The EU vowed on Fri ϐ ǯ tactic of abandoning “ghost ships” full of migrants off European coasts. Even as it careered towards its second debt default in 13 years last July, Argentina insisted it could not swerve away from the precipice because of something called a RUFO, or Rights Upon Future Offers clause. The RUFO clause is part of Argentina’s 2005 and 2010 debt restructuring agreements, hard-fought deals the South American country reached with creditors who agreed to take steep losses on their bonds after it defaulted on $100 billion in debt during its 2001 economic crisis. The clause entitles all bondholders to equal treatment. According to Buenos Aires, that meant it had no choice but to defy a US federal court ruling in favour of two American hedge funds demanding full payment on the defaulted Argentine bonds they bought for pennies on the dollar. Blocked by the court from paying its restructured debt until it settles the $1.3 billion dispute with the hedge funds, Argentina defaulted again on ͵ͲǤǡ piring at the end of the year, the stage may be set for a deal. With a hard-fought campaign on the horizon, Kirchner — who is not eligible for re-election — may see scoring political points for her allies as more important than settling the debt dispute. The urgency of resolving the debt standoff has decreased since an $11 billion currency swap with China, boosting its dwindling foreign reserves to $31 billion and removing pressure to return to the capital markets it has been frozen out of since 2001. The so-called “vulture funds” meanwhile appear content to play the waiting game. The funds — Aurelius Capital Management and billionaire speculator Paul Singer’s NML Capital — have their eye on the elections, too, especially the presidential bid by the business-friendly mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri. “Several opposition candidates have already put forth their strategy: pay up. So why rush to negotiate with “Argentina wants to and can pay. The problem isn’t coming from Argentina, it’s coming from the ‘vultures’ that have never wanted to negotiate. They want to get their full 100 per cent and bring the nation to its knees” the current government?” said Ramiro Castineira of consultancy Econometrica. The patent design includes a position detecting device such as an accelerometer, a smart tip for writing, a pair of transmitter and receiver and a device for computing. The iPen, otherwise referred to as a modern stylus, can be used to enter data easily into a computing device without the need to actually touch the device or to use a special type of paper. The data is entered based on the images or text drawn on any type of surface. This includes anything from a whiteboard to a sheet of paper, to even a wall. The stylus also has the ability to enter the data into a computing device even from a distance, such as when the user is at the other end of the room. This concept of “distant data transfer” makes the stylus an ideal tool in a classroom setting when there’s a need for the user to gather a digital version of the notes originally handwritten by someone from across the room. Users can also take advantage of the stylus’ ability to interpret whiteboard-written data, which it simultaneously displays on a computing device. Apple describes the patent in its abstract thus: “The stylus may likewise be moved in threedimensional space and corresponding images displayed on a display of a computing device. The stylus tracks its different positions while a user is writing or drawing and then either stores the data to be uploaded later or trans- mits the data simultaneously to a computing device. The computing device then displays the images and text drawn on the surface.” ϐ makes it an ideal companion device for the rumored Apple iPad Pro. The device is touted as a large tablet, which Apple may just launch from early to the middle of 2015. The team-up of the two devices could just be Apple’s take on the Surface Pro 3 tablet of Microsoft. The device includes a built-in dock that will hold the pen in place using magnetics. It remains to be seen whether Apple will pursue making the device publicly available as the ϐ of patents that never really came into existence. Microsoft’s ‘Spartan’ will ǡϐ than Internet Explorer INSTEAD of revamping Internet Explorer for the launch of Windows 10, according to a report, Microsoft plans to start from scratch with a new browser, dubbed “Spartan.” ZDNet reported that Spartan could ship alongside Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 10, due sometime in the latter half of ʹͲͳͷǤǡϐǡ alternative to IE, but with the foundation for third-party extensions; and as a marketing “do-over” for Internet Explorer, to do away with Internet Explorer’s legacy once and for all. Finally, the report suggests that eventually Spartan could debut on alternative platforms like iOS and Android, much like the Bing search app can replace the search widget on Android devices, for example. Technically, the browser will use Microsoft’s Chakra JavaScript engine and Microsoft’s Trident rendering engine (not WebKit). But the more interesting aspect is probably Microsoft’s marketing thrust. In aggregate, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is still the most popular browser in the world, holding steady at 58 per cent of the user base throughout all of 2014, according to NetApplications. Google’s Chrome is steadily climbing, however, from 16.4 per cent to over 20 per cent at the end of November. (Opera and Firefox are steadily losing share.) But Microsoft still seems determined to pick at the scab of its legacy browsers, with a video campaign mocking “the browser you loved to hate” and similar exercises. (IE 6 still stands as one of the 25 worst tech products ever invented.) Chrome developed as an alternative to Microsoft’s conservatism in standards adoption, and Chrome still stands atop IE in terms of support for HTML5 standards. Nevertheless, most would argue that IE has substantially improved from prior versions, even if some techies pooh-pooh using it in favour of an alternative. It would seem, however, that Microsoft might be best served by making Spartan a choice in upcoming tech previews, then settling on a single browser for future versions. Last week, Ford revealed that it would offer the app for use in its cars. Launched in 2008, Life360 is a free smartphone app that lets motorists drive in a focused manner as the app alerts friends and family not to text the user as he or she is driving. The app has been reworked to integrate the Drive Mode for Ford vehicles that are SYNC AppLink-enabled. “With the integration of Life360 Drive Mode, we are helping to keep drivers’ attention on the road by letting their loved ones know that they are behind the wheel, encouraging family members and friends to hold off on sending texts,” said Julius Marchwicki, product manager for Ford Connected Services. With over 48 million users, Life360 app works when a motorist connects their smartphone to Ford SYNC AppLink via Bluetooth. The 29-year-old has become increasingly frustrated at his lack of playing time with the English Premier League side. Podolski was pictured on the Inter website brandishing a blue and black club scarf on his arrival in the Italian city. His move to Italy comes despite Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Tuesday describing Inter’s interest as “a joke”. Podolski, who moved to Arsenal from Cologne in 2012, is due to undergo a medical on Saturday and could make his debut against champions Juventus on Tuesday. He has scored 31 goals for the Gunners but has yet to start a Premier League match this season. SYDNEY — Alain Perrin’s youthful China side wrapped up their preparations for next week’s Asian Cup in clinical style by bouncing back ϐ Oman 4-1 in a friendly on Saturday. Mohammed Ali put the West Asians in front in the 18th minute of the closed-door friendly in sweltering Sydney, where the referee twice stopped play so both teams could get refreshments. Perrin’s side came roaring back, though, with Hao Junmin amongst the scorers as China extended their unbeaten run to 10 games ahead of their Asian Cup opener against Saudi Arabia next Saturday in Brisbane. They also face Group B clashes with Uzbekistan and North Korea, while Oman are in Group A alongside the hosts Australia, South Korea and Kuwait. While many neutrals believe Oman will struggle in a tough Group A which included Australia, Korea Republic and Kuwait, Le Guen remains adamant that his charges have what it takes to cause more than a few upsets. “I can assure you, we are not just going to make up the numbers in Australia,” he explained. “We are travelling not just to play. We want to bring good results. I have faith in my boys, they can deliver.” “It will be a tough challenge but I know that sides like Australia are scared of us. They know we have the ability to trouble them. We are no longer pushovers. “It is a good feeling when you know that rival teams consider us strong and competitive. Our players need to capitalise on it and become more ambitious,” the Frenchman added. A two-time winner on the PGA Tour, world number 84 Bae must return to Korea by the end of January or he could risk criminal charges as his current permit expires in the coming days, according to his mother. “(Bae) is seeking legal counsel to work through the military issues in Korea,” the 28-year-old golfer’s manager said in a statement released on Friday. “He has a valid green card, and Sang-moon intends to stay in the United States as long as it is lawful to do so and play on the PGA Tour this year, beginning with next week’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua Resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui,” the player’s manager said in the statement. All South Korean men between 18 and 35 must complete two years of military service, with the country still technically at war with North Korea after a peace treaty went unsigned following the 1950-53 Korean War. Sporting success has, though, enabled some athletes to bypass military service with the Korean government waiving the requirement for any athlete who wins Asian Games gold or an Olympic medal. Recasting fast-food as “fresh” and “real” will be tricky, in large part because it’s so universally regarded as cheap and greasy. Another problem is that terms like “fresh,” ‘’real” and “healthy” have nebulous meanings, making it hard for companies to pin down how to approach transformation. ϐ ϐ unappetising. Already, packaged food and beverage companies have reformulated products to remove such ingredients, even while standing by their safety. The researchers also found little change in fast food portion sizes during the study period — 1996 and 2013. “Restaurants can help consumers by downsizing portion sizes and reformulating their food to contain less of these over-consumed nutrients,” said Alice Lichtenstein from Tufts University in the US. “This can be done, gradually, by cutting the amount of sodium, and using leaner cuts of meat and reduced-fat cheese,” Lichtenstein added. The researchers, however, added that a notable exception was seen in trans fat content. “The decline in trans fat we saw between 2005 and 2009 appears to be related to legislative efforts,” Lichtenstein pointed out. For the study, the researchers analysed the calorie, sodium, saturated fat and trans fat content of popular menu items served at three US fast-food chains between 1996 and 2013. They found that average calories, sodium and saturated fat stayed relatively constant, albeit at high levels. The researchers focused on four most popular menu items: fries, cheeseburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, and regular cola. ϐPreventing Chronic Disease. Australia bans commercial sunbeds over cancer fears M forests may be absorbing far more carbon dioxide in response to its rising atmospheric levels than many scientists thought, a new Nasa-led study says. Tropical forests absorb 1.4 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide out of a total global absorption of 2.5 billion — more than what is absorbed by forests in Canada, Siberia and other northern regions, called boreal forests. “This is good news because uptake in boreal forests is already slowing, while tropical forests may continue to take up carbon for many years,” said ǯǡǤ Forests and other land vegetation currently remove up to 30 per cent of human carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. In case the rate of absorption slows down, the rate of global warming would speed up. ϐ ide estimates from many sources at different scales. Researchers made use of atmospheric models, satellite images, data from experimental forest plots. “Until our analysis, no one had successfully completed a global reconciliation of information about carbon dioxide effects from the atmospheric, forestry and modelling communities,” said Joshua Fisher of JPL and co-author. As human-caused emissions add more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, forests across the globe are using it to grow faster, reducing the amount that stays airborne. This effect is called carbon fertilisation. “All else being equal, the effect is stronger at higher temperatures, meaning it will be higher in the tropics than in the boreal forests,” Schimel pointed ǤProceedings of National Academy of Sciences. There are no commercial solariums in the only other part of Australia — the hot and humid Northern Territory. Cancer Council Australia welcomed the ban, which it has long pushed for, adding that it would help to reduce rates of skin cancer, which affects two out of three Australians by age 70. “Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world,” advocacy director Paul Grogan said in a statement. “Solariums expose users to extremely highly levels of UV (ultraviolet) radiation, greatly increasing their risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.” Australia is sometimes referred to as the sunburnt country, where beaches are thronged with bathers basking under blue skies and the rates of melanoma, a potentially fatal form of skin cancer, are the highest in the world. They have also warned that tanning on a sunbed is not safe. “Queensland already has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world and there is no question there’s a direct link between regular sunbed use and the incidence of malignant melanoma,” the state’s interim Health Minister Mark McArdle said.
