Calendar Year 2015
Issue # 07.01.15
On July 1st a Coaches Clinic will be held at 6:00 PM at 339 Atlanta Highway SE, Winder, GA 30680. The
Clinician will be Coach John Lewellen of South Carolina. This will be the third clinic in 2015 for the
Georgia LBC, with the first two having taken place on March 7th and May 22nd for anyone looking to
certify or re-certify as a USA Boxing Coach or Official.
COACHES AND OFFICIALS, USA Boxing certified Coaches can work as Seconds in all USA Boxing
Competitions so please attend the clinics as offered and carry your updated Passbook with you to all
competitions. Remember to present your passbook to the Chief of Officials to sign and verify the
documentation of your event contributions. Coaches may also present their passbooks to the LBC
President for verification.
Note per USA Boxing Official Rule Book - Technical Rules (Rule 19. Coaches / Seconds, 19.1.1): A
registered Boxer may serve as a second in the presence of two certified coaches but may not enter the
ring or mount the ring apron. In the event that there is only one certified coach in the corner, the
Boxer may mount the ring apron.
Why Do We Conduct Clinics? Clinics are a USA Boxing requirement to provide officials, boxers, coaches
and the general public a better understanding of the goals of Olympic-style boxing, plus reasoning
behind the rules and the scoring system. Additionally, these certification programs fulfill the need for
continuous education for all participating members of USA Boxing and:



Improve comfort level
Promote credibility
Reduce legal liability
To attain certification as a Coach or Official, you must be a registered Non-Athlete member of USA
Boxing. Parents and athletes may attend GABA clinics for informational purposes, no testing required.
If you are interested in attending a Clinic, go to http://bit.ly/gabaclinic and fill out the sign-up form.
This will allow GABA to adequately prepare necessary materials prior to arriving at the clinic.
To register with USA Boxing, visit http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Boxing/Membership/Registration.

Dear USA Boxing members,
I hope this communication finds everyone having a fun and healthy summer.
Let me apologize for the failure to communicate more frequently as the only excuse I
have is that there is too much boxing and not enough time.
I have a large club and as some of you out there know, most of our boxers have special needs that
require time and attention. I have recently participated in the National Golden Gloves tournament and
I am happy to say that USAB works hand in hand with Golden Gloves.
I will let our executive director report on our many initiatives that have occurred in recent months. All
of them are positive and good for USA Boxing.
Mr. Martino will elaborate about recent changes at AIBA, sponsorships, fund raising, and the
completion of our board of directors.
I will be involved next week in meetings with staff about improving our LBC election procedures to
make them more fair and inclusive. We will also discuss how to make the grievance process more
efficient and easier.
We are close to putting together a Masters organization that could greatly benefit everyone and
possibly become a group member in the future. Also being worked on is a level one coaching clinic that
could be given on-line and also on-line training for our judges.
With the Pan American games just around the corner and the Olympics only 14 months away it is a
very busy time for USA Boxing.
I will get back to you after the Olympic qualifier.
Regards,
John Brown

Membership,
It is with great enthusiasm that I communicate with you this week. There is much to
share, from Board of Directors news, new sponsorships, and events updates to
information on operations and grant opportunities. We are only days away from our
third Olympic Trials Qualification Tournament and the National Headquarters is
working hard to welcome our membership to Colorado Springs. Two men and three
women will advance to Olympic Trials competitions from this event and it will prove to be a very
competitive “don’t miss event” for our boxing community.
Board of Directors and Governance
USA Boxing announced in May that Lew Perkins, Mary McElroy and Ray Silvas have joined the Board of
Directors. Perkins and McElroy are Independent Directors and Silvas joins the Board as an AIBA
Executive Committee member. Perkins and McElroy bring vast experience from the collegiate sports
environment while Silvas represents USA at the International Federation level.
On Thursday May 28th, the first action of the full Board: Voted unanimously to elect John Brown, who
had been serving as the Interim President, to serve as President and DJ Walton as 1 st Vice-President
through September 2016. The Board will be scheduling a face to face meeting in the upcoming month.
The Board is actively seeking individuals to fill out the USA Boxing Committees and Commissions.
USA Boxing Board of Director meeting minutes can be found on our website.
International Updates
AIBA recently made senior management changes at their National Headquarters in Lausanne,
Switzerland. Mr. Karim Bouzidi replaces Ho Kim as the Executive Director of AIBA. We will be working
closely with Mr. Bouzidi on a number of important issues, to include the mandatory removal of
headgear from Elite Men. President John Brown has been invited to meet with Mr. Bouzidi at the Pan
Am Games in Toronto in July.
At a recent Americas Confederation Meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ray Sivas was named Chair of
the Referee and Judges Commission, Christy Halbert was named Chair of the Women’s Commission
and Angel Villarreal was named a member of the Competition Commission.

National Office / Operations (USA Boxing: Mandatory SafeSport Training)
USA Boxing has reported during the past year that the United States Olympic Committee was taking
the steps to develop an initiative to ensure the safety of athletes in all National Governing Bodies. This
program is named “SafeSport.” In addition to mandatory background checks for all non-athletes who
work with athletes, the USOC has determined that it is in the best interests of the sporting community
to develop and implement a training program that educates each non-athlete regarding appropriate
practices and raise awareness about misconduct in sport.
We all have a role to play in creating a healthy setting for sport. SafeSport helps raise awareness
about misconduct in sport, promote open dialogue, and provide training and resources. When we
work as a team, we can build a game plan to make sport safe―for everyone. http://safesport.org/
USA Boxing has been directed by SafeSport to develop and submit our plan for implementing the
process by which each non-athlete member will obtain “SafeSport” certification. As a result, our
National Staff will provide this training at all National Events through 2015 with the understanding that
“SafeSport” Certification will be a requirement for all non-athlete membership beginning August 1,
2015. The on-line training is currently available to everyone (free of charge). We encourage all
members to access the SafeSport website and complete the training as soon as possible. More detailed
information will be sent in the upcoming weeks.
Sponsorships
We are pleased to announce the following sponsors have partnered with USA Boxing:
