What should we do more of?
“Being selected by the COBT Hammer
Heads program has been a life changing
experience. To go from a struggling,
confused teenager, to becoming a labourer
with Local 506 and being employed by
a reputable contractor such as Carillion
has truly been a blessing. I know the
opportunities available to me are endless if I continue to be dedicated and focused on the career path ahead of me.”

“In the spirit of continuous improvement, we launched a Carillion Ideas
Program that encourages employees to think critically and identify
opportunities that improve the way things are done – ideas that enhance
savings, reduce costs and waste or increase efficiency. Implemented
ideas are rewarded – a win/win for everyone! The program has been well
received so far with over 50 ideas submitted, a number of which have
already been implemented. Special thanks to our people who drive our
commitment to delivering safe, sustainable and effective solutions.”

We have found the Early Payment Facility
(EPF) to be a great tool for increasing
productivity and project flow. It has allowed
us to focus on delivering our part of this
fantastic project. The EPF has helped us
do this by ensuring a smoother and more
efficient payment process through the tiers
of our supply chain. Having the flexibility to
draw upon funds earlier has allowed us to
gain better terms and pay more efficiently
which fosters better relationships all around.

2014: THE YEAR IN REVIEW
SUMMARY SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2014
PARTICIPATING IN SUSTAINABILITY...
In sectors like construction and support services, which rely fundamentally on working with partners, it is
SOME OF OUR GLOBAL 2020 TARGETS
important to recognize that collaboration is key to success. Managing resources wisely, developing new and
competitive innovations, engaging credibly with local communities and building long-term economic success

require learning and skills development. This, fundamentally, is at the heart of our 2020 Sustainability strategy,
in volunteering
and we know that there is a lot still to tackle as we work together to make tomorrow a better place.
HOW WE WORKED IN PARTNERSHIP IN 2014
Sustainability is…
Our Customers: Continue to provide quality service and
keep our clients satisfied; embed environmental and social
aspects into everything the business does.
*Middle East and North Africa
“Sustainability is a fundamental component to building a
successful business. A balanced sustainability strategy is
about building stronger communities and protecting the
environment while applying sound economic responsibility. Together with the support of our employees, clients and
business partners, we remain committed to responsible
business practices and making positive
differences in the communities in which
we operate. I am pleased to report on
our economic, social and environmental
responsibility progress to date.”

OUR MISSION
Making tomorrow a better place
In 2014, we conducted our first materiality review to
understand our stakeholders’ most significant priorities, so
we could report on what matters to them. The independent
review included workshops, interviews and an international
online survey for employees, clients, governments,
investors, suppliers, community groups and sustainability
organizations. Here’s what our stakeholders said:

In British Columbia, our Energy Conservation Assistance Programme
(ECAP) has helped 8,000 low-income families through free energy
advice, saving them $400,000 (£219,000). We have also won
another ECAP contract to deliver energy conservation to three First
Nations communities near Penticton, BC.
In an effort to train our people across Canada and the Caribbean in
an effective and efficient manner, we launched an e-learning tool as
a means of reaching our people in remote areas as best as possible.
Carillion employees now have access to a catalog of training
modules on ePOD – our online learning and development portal.
The launch of the online e-learning tool has achieved savings of
over $30,000 CAD in travel.
