Jim Rice Sunday Evening FROM LEON SANDERSON Unity in the Midst of Discord On a recent Sunday evening, Rusty Adair preached an excellent sermon relating to conflict resolution. His expertise stems from a specific inquiry in about 3000 interviews: tell me about a time when conflict arose and how you handled it. Read on for what he said. How does the church show unity in a world where everything around us discourages it? How do we maintain peace and not allow the cultural norms around us to drive the church’s culture? There are three simple concepts that can transform our relationships in the church. • Listen - One of the turning points in the church is the debate in Acts 15 over whether Gentile Christians had to be circumcised. The dialogue in this chapter indicates a willingness for each side to listen to the position of the other. Most conflict is exacerbated by a failure to listen to each other. Covey said it this way, “Seek first to understand and then to be understood.” • Put the needs of others first - In Philemon, Paul deals with a conflict between two church members. He addresses it by suggesting that they should have the same attitude as Christ, who humbled himself to the point of death for others. From the Golden Rule to the Greatest Command, a central theme of Scripture is to put the needs of other people before our own needs. That simple statement by itself has the power to change the world. • Focus on what counts - In Ephesians 2, Paul writes that in Christ, God made one new race out of the two (Jews and Gentiles). He is our peace. In Philemon, he reminds the Master that his former slave is now a brother in Christ. We tend to concentrate on the things that divide us, but the key to unity is to never forget the one thing we have in common - the cross of Christ unites us. 5 p.m. CHAPEL........................................................ Worship Leader: Greg Muse Welcome / Scripture Reading (Matt. 16:24-25) / Prayer......................Frank Freese Songs: 666 - I Am Thine, O Lord 678 - More About Jesus 671 - Purer In Heart, O God “We will walk in the name of the Lord our God” (Micah 4:1-5)........... Rodney Plunket Song: 664 - Take My Life, and Let It Be Lord’s Supper & Offering.......................................................................... Lloyd Berry Song: 701 - My Jesus, I Love Thee Prayer........................................................................................................ Jim Greene Thank you to Greg Muse for leading worship this evening while Leon is in Jonesboro, Arkansas, leading an area-wide singing. The dividing wall of hostility has been torn down. May the church transform the way the world deals with each other.
