SIMCHA OPPORTUNITIES
A celebration of monthly birthdays and anniversaries for our Beth Tzedek
family members.
PLEASE JOIN US! on Saturday morning,
August 15, as we honor those
observing a simcha during the month of August.
We’d like to acknowledge members who are celebrating with a bimah
honor during services. Please let us know if you’d like an aliyah or reading.
Those who wish to remain anonymous may, of course, do so. Those
with another simcha (such as promotions, graduations, engagements,
homecoming, etc.) are also welcome to participate. Even if you will not be
at services, we hope you will participate by letting the congregation know
of your celebration.
If you are a celebrant, we ask that you join in sponsoring the lovely kiddush
luncheon. Feel free to invite your family and friends to celebrate with you.
(If you expect a large number of guests, please let the office know so that
we may adequately prepare the luncheon. If you expect only a few guests,
no additional notice is necessary.)
We have established three primary levels of support:
• $36.00 to be a Sponsor;
• $54.00 to be a Donor; and
• $72.00 to be a Benefactor
You may honor a child, here in town or near to your heart, with any of
these amounts or, with our additional, special Kinder Recognition, with a
donation of $1.00 per year for children up to age 18.
We appreciate even greater generosity to help offset the ever-increasing
costs. Perhaps you can send a dollar for every year of celebration?
However, if even these levels are too much for your budget, please feel
free to contact Allan Werbow in the Temple office or me. Family and friends
may find that a Simcha Shabbat sponsorship is the perfect gift.
Because of publication delays, it will take a month or two, but those
contributing to the Simcha Shabbat Kiddush will have their names listed in
the Shofar – unless you request that you remain anonymous.

SIMCHA SHABBAT
“Melton is my two hours each week of ‘pure Jewish learning’. No
homework, no tests, no papers. I just show up and listen to amazing
instructors whose knowledge seems endless. My classmates are Hebrew
school graduates and Sunday school dropouts; congregation members
and unaffiliated Jews; young adults and grandparents. We are a ‘Melton
mishpacha’! We learn and laugh and then repeat again the next week. It
is the highlight of my week!”

CONFIRMATION STUDENTS RECOGNIZED
Rabbi Harvey Meirovich presented four outstanding lectures during
this year’s Rabbi Isaac Klein Scholar in Residence Weekend held
on June 5-7, 2009. Rabbi Meirovich, currently on sabbatical at
Congregation Beth Tzedec in Toronto, is Senior Lecturer of Jewish
Studies and former Dean at the Schechter Rabbinical Seminary in
Jerusalem.
The Friday evening program focused on the question of revelation and
referenced the teachings of Neil Gillman, Abraham Joshua Heschel,
Maimonides and Louis Jacobs. Topics touched on included “divine
pathos”, God-patterns, and different interpretations of receiving and
giving the Torah at Sinai.
The Saturday morning session concerned Torah commentary and
the subjective history of Judaism. Rabbi Meirovich provided
archeological evidence of changes in Torah manuscripts throughout
the centuries. The Saturday afternoon lecture explored the issue of
creating community and examined the meaning of religious myth,
ritual behavior, principles of observance, the ritual of Shabbat, and the
multiple avenues of access to Conservative Judaism.
